Corey & Fred close out Jet Li July with a focus on two more of the legend's franchises: THE LEGEND and THE TAI-CHI MASTER. TOPICS INCLUDE: *Which entry has Jet Li only in the first part? *Does Michelle Yeoh steal the show (like always)? *Is Fong Sai Yuk one of Jet's better roles or just passable? *And which one had a horrendously unnecessary sequel?
Corey & Fred return to highlight BLACK MASK, which is easily the most underrated Hong Kong Superhero saga. TOPICS INCLUDE: *How this concept is essentially X-Men type mutants facing off against each other with Jet Li playing a Green Hornet costumed Batman utilizing stealthy martial arts and you have yourself an ambitious yet far from fully-developed genre outing *A fun overview on Li's '90s output, how he evolves as an Action star & his awesome child-like grin in all his films *How the Hospital takeover is a fun homage to John Woo's movie Hard Boiled *And explaining the cast of the zany sequel. SONG USED: "Black Mask (1996 Main Theme) " by Teddy Robin.
Corey Danna & Fred Andersson (Schmollywood Babylon) rejoin for another entry for the Week of Jet Li July! We chronicle the Huo Yuanjia biopic FEARLESS and FIST OF LEGEND, the film about Huo's fictional protege Chen Zhen. Why is the fight choreography so dynamic? Why are these easily in Li's Top Ten Roles of All Time? And how do both films provide solid soundtracks, production value and supporting castmembers?
Movie Fan/Author Corey Danna & Instagrammer Fred Andersson (Schmollywood Babylon) join me in this quick overview on the ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA franchise starring Jet Li as folk hero Wong Fei Hung. TOPICS INCLUDE: *The scoop on the Eureka, Tai Seng & Sony DVD/Blu Ray special features *How is this village different from the other Jet Li franchise Fong Sai Yuk? *The ideals, principles, discipline & themes of fighting back against invading 19th century gov't forces as well as how it's a grittier version of the same historical legend Wong-Fei Hung portrayed in Jackie Chan's comedic DRUNKEN MASTER saga *And the infamous parts 4, 5 & 6 as well as the campy 7th installment which brought Jet Li back.
Level Up the Nostalgia is in full effect as Evo and Gregg go full blockbuster with Episode 229! This week's rewind features everything from comic book carnage to TRL countdowns to Van Damme-style living room stunts. We talk:
TP FOR YOUR BUNGHOLE! Beavis and Butthead are back again, but this time in Call of Duty! Sonic is opening the doors to guest racers, while Mario is saying arrivederci to anyone that's not from the mushroom kingdom. The Street Fighter movie starts casting, and Chicken Run is heading to consoles. Plus Elio bombs, and the Social Network is getting a sequel, so much for wanting more original ideas. The Buffy reboot moves closer to reality, and Raymond is staying in the past. Plus a review of Ironheart.
Caomh McGillion rejoins our show to discuss the DMX & Joel Silver's Rap-and-Kung Fu Themed Movie Trilogy: *Despite this not being an era Jet Li personally cares for, which of these is often beloved by his fans? *Does DMX outshine everyone (including Tom Arnold) in each installment? *Which is the most absurd(est) Steven Seagal moment? *Why does this make one long for superior sequels to BETTER Joel Silver movies? *Should DMX had done more Martial Arts movies? *And which entry made us want our wasted time back (the most)?

In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick, Anthony, and Elise tackle the rewatchability of the 1998 action-comedy Lethal Weapon 4, the final installment in the legendary buddy-cop franchise. Early in the discussion, Nick drops a fun fact that surprises Elise—Mel Gibson, who plays the iconic Martin Riggs, is actually Australian. Elise, having never known that before, adds a fresh layer of amusement to the conversation, sparking an interesting side discussion about Gibson's career and how his international background contributed to his rise as an action star in Hollywood. The trio dives into how Lethal Weapon 4 continues the series' signature blend of high-octane action and comedy while giving Riggs and Danny Glover's character, Roger Murtaugh, even more depth as they confront aging and family responsibilities. Nick, Anthony, and Elise discuss how the chemistry between Gibson and Glover is as strong as ever, making the characters' friendship the emotional core of the film. They also highlight the standout performance of Jet Li as the villain, whose martial arts skills add a thrilling new dimension to the franchise. As the conversation progresses, the hosts examine how the film mixes lighter comedic moments with more serious themes of family, loyalty, and legacy. Elise appreciates how the movie balances explosive action with heartfelt moments, like Riggs preparing to become a father and Murtaugh facing retirement. Anthony points out that these personal stakes give Lethal Weapon 4 an added layer of rewatchability, as the characters' growth feels earned after four films. The hosts also enjoy the return of Joe Pesci's Leo Getz and Chris Rock's introduction as Detective Butters, whose comic relief keeps the movie fun. By the end of the episode, Nick, Anthony, and Elise agree that Lethal Weapon 4 is a highly rewatchable film that brings a satisfying close to the series. They praise its blend of action, humor, and heart, with Nick noting that it's the perfect conclusion for fans of the franchise. Elise's newfound knowledge of Mel Gibson's Australian roots adds a playful twist to the conversation, making this episode of The Rewatch Party a must-listen for fans of the series and newcomers alike. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122151/

Can Master Wong navigate China into the 20th-century and past the obstacles of modernity, invasive western culture, and a whole host of outside threats to tradition? Of course he can. But even he's got to admit: he looks pretty good in a boater hat and sunglasses. Tsui Hark's epic kung fu period action/comedy pits western powers, local corruption, modern technology, and the stubborn refusal to adapt against a ragtag group centered around a fighting school and its stoic martial arts master played by Jet Li. In Part 2 of this episode of "Your One Black Friend," Joli and guest host Kosmic Jedi continue their exploration of parallel universes, inspired by the themes and narrative of Blake Crouch's novel "Dark Matter," now a series on Apple TV. (Part 2 of this discussion deals only with episode 1-3 of the series.) Kosmic & Joli delve into the concept of infinite realities and discuss how this idea allows for endless possibilities and outcomes, making the show's narrative both exciting and thought-provoking. How does the concept of infinite realities reshape our understanding of personal identity? How does soul memory influence intuition and decision-making? How does exploring alternate timelines affect our perception of regret? Joli and Kosmic Jedi analyze the complex themes of the show, including Eastern mysticism, physics, and psychological analysis. They appreciate how these elements are intricately woven together to create a multi-layered narrative that encourages viewers to think deeply about the nature of reality and the choices we make. The discussion also touches on character relationships, focusing on the sacrifices and decisions made by the characters, particularly in the context of gender roles and personal fulfillment. They compare the show to other media like "Rick and Morty," "Invincible," and movies such as "The One" with Jet Li and "Deja Vu" with Denzel Washington, highlighting how these works handle the concept of multiple realities. Joli and Kosmic Jedi reflect on their own lives, contemplating how different decisions could have led to different outcomes. They emphasize the importance of intuition and the belief in multiple chances or lifetimes to experience different paths, suggesting that this mindset can reduce regret and anxiety by accepting the existence of parallel realities. The conversation also explores philosophical insights, particularly the idea of letting go of regret and anxiety by recognizing that this is not the only lifetime or timeline. They discuss how adopting this perspective can lead to a more relaxed and observant approach to life, reducing the fear of missing out and the intensity of decision-making. Throughout the discussion, Joli and Kosmic Jedi express a strong appreciation for the show and its ability to spark deep, reflective conversations about life, choices, and the nature of reality. They commend the creators for their ability to address complex themes in an engaging and thought-provoking manner, making it a standout piece of media. Youroneblackfriend.com •••
Can Jackie Chan and Jet Li make The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) into a successful film? Listen and find out in this action-packed episode you don't want to miss!
Kyle and Shaun kick off everyone's favorite theme month with a Jet Li flick from 2005 about a man, who is a dog, who is a man.
Sorry about the Audio- Beef and Rum Daddy had issues :/ Following the release of The Matrix in 1999, Hollywood saw an explosion of martial arts-focused action movies. Riding that wave was Chinese actor Jet Li, who made his first American-made film debut in Lethal Weapon 4 and went on to star in Kiss of the Dragon, Romeo Must Die and this dimension-hopping cop movie. Starring as both the hero and villain - the last two variants who have absorbed the energy from their murdered counterparts - Li faces off against himself with Jason Statham, Delroy Lindo, and Carla Gugino rounding out the cast. The film also tapped into a modern rock sound with Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Godsmack, and Papa Roach. Directed by James Wong and co-written by Wong with Glen Morgan, the film was neither a box office nor critical hit. While it may be the best of the Matrix variants in this universe, in the end there can be only The One!
