This week, the panel begins with the question: is The Bear's second season even better than its first? Then, the trio discusses Jennifer Lawrence's new “sex” comedy, No Hard Feelings. Finally, they examine an essay by Jonah Weiner of Blackbird Spyplane, “Is Ssense hurting the cool-clothes eco-system?” about the online clothing emporium that's growing like a weed. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel dives into former New York Times film critic—and current Book Review critic—A.O. Scott's recent piece, “Everyone Likes Reading. Why Are We So Afraid of It?” Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements: Dana: Access and Engagement Curator at the Brontë Parsonage Museum — The Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth is hiring! Applications close on Sunday, July 2nd. Julia: Cédric Grolet on Instagram — The French pastry chef (who works as executive pastry chef at Le Meurice in Paris) posts beautifully shot baking videos to his Instagram and TikTok. Some inspiration I had after teaching my first Desire Map Workshop this past weekend, and why I think you should Decide to Rise. In this Episode I share: my experience facilitating my first Desire Map Workshop a reading of a beautiful poem by the author of the Desire Map, Danielle LaPorte how you can stay Connected to get advance notice of the next In-Person and NEW Virtual Desire Map Workshops Decide to Rise by Danielle LaPorte Push. Turn up the volume. Go hard. Go harder. Reprioritize your aches and pains. Infuse your sensitivities with courage. Devote yourself to done. There are Soul-justified reasons to cancel. There are times to just stop. This isn’t one of them. Keep going. Show up. Full on. Full tilt. Full out. Decide to be one of those people who pull it off. Do what you say you’re going to do. Don’t let us down. Decide to rise. Why decide to rise? Not for the reasons you might think. In fact, these are the reasons that will make you sick and tired: Do not rise out of obligation.Do not rise because of feared consequences. Do not rise because you think being tough makes you smarter (it doesn’t). Decide to rise because you want to expand—your being, your life, your possibilities. De- cide to rise because superpowers are meant to be activated and applied in everyday life. Decide to rise to explore your place in the universe. On the other side of deciding to rise is illumination, ecstasy, insight. And the angel of your strength is there waiting, smiling, applauding, with a goblet of endorphins for you. Drink up!When you transcend circumstances you get special privileges. You get evidence that you are indeed amazing, and irrefutable proof that what your heart and mind choose is what matters. And you get the deep knowing that life wants you to win. Decide to rise. Lean in. Listen up. Closely. It’s your Soul speaking, and she says, Get UP! I need you. I want you. I am you.Choose me. Lean in. Listen up. Closely. Decide to rise. Todayand#8217;s FBA Dharmabyte, and#8220;Why Are We So Afraid?,and#8221; is an excerpt from the talk and#8220;Dying to Liveand#8221; by Vidyamala. Here she talks about being present with fear in the face of impermanence. In the full talk, Vidyamala gives a strong account of working with suffering and sorrow in life, and of transforming experience into one characterized by contentment and a sense of meaning. From her own practice of living with chronic pain comes a sane and unsentimental perspective that affords us all a measure of genuine optimism as we meet the trials of the world: bereavements and losses of all kinds can be met with a kindness and awareness that gently ease the burden, allowing something of peace to enter our lives again.
