I’m so excited to be re-releasing my conversation with Joy Mangano to celebrate Joy: The Musical, now on stage in New York City! I was thrilled to go see the show, a vibrant retelling of Joy’s extraordinary journey from single mom to superstar inventor. Known for creating the Miracle Mop and portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in the hit 2015 film Joy, Joy Mangano is a true trailblazer. But her path to success started with a simple idea, a big risk, and relentless determination. In this episode, Joy sits down with Emily to share her earliest invention (a fluorescent flea collar for pets!), how she got the Miracle Mop off the ground while raising three young kids, and the pivotal decision to sell her company to HSN. Be sure to subscribe, leave us a rating, and share with your friends if you liked this episode! She Pivots was created by host Emily Tisch Sussman to highlight women, their stories, and how their pivot became their success. In this episode of The Book Fix, hosts Yajaira and Cheli dive headfirst into the cinematic world of The Hunger Games (2012) following their recent reread of the book. They ditch the plot recap to focus instead on the gritty film style, casting choices, and all the small (and not-so-small) differences between book and screen. From the shaky camera work that left them dizzy, to Jennifer Lawrence's stoic portrayal of Katniss, they compare the emotional richness of the book to the movie's more muted tone. The duo gets especially animated over missed opportunities—like Katniss's musical talents being downplayed, Peeta's love being underdeveloped, and the absence of iconic lines like “the boy with the bread.” They also touch on the awkward shift from book's slow-burn romance to the movie's blink-and-you-miss-it kisses. Bonus? An unhinged tangent about types of bread, platform Converse, and Snow's bald-headed crimes.Whether you're team "Gale was unnecessary" or just here to roast the Capitol, this episode is a nostalgic, chaotic tribute to the movie that launched a dystopian generation. And yes—Snow's still a bitch. Pete Wright hosts a brutally personal Mother's Day episode of Sitting in the Dark, joined by regular co-conspirators Kyle Olson, Kynan Dias, and Tommy Metz III, as they dig into three films that ask a profoundly unsettling question: What if Mom is the monster? We start with Run (2020), a film that's more “Lifetime original” than it has any right to be. It's clean, tight, and distressingly effective. Sarah Paulson's performance is terrifying not because she twirls her mustache but because she doesn't have one. And newcomer Kiera Allen rolls (yes, rolls) away with the movie by doing exactly what her character does best—staying two clever steps ahead.Next, Goodnight Mommy (2014). Austrian, austere, and absolutely harrowing. It's a film about maternal misrecognition, grief-fueled delusion, and the dangers of not labeling your twins' toothbrushes. There's a twist, and if you see it coming, that won't make the third act any less of a gut punch. It's what happens when grief curdles, and no one's left to explain bedtime. And then: mother! (2017). Darren Aronofsky's symphonic descent into allegorical madness. Sure, it's “about” the Bible. It's also about climate change. It's about patriarchy, artistic ego, and the cosmic price of hospitality. Or maybe it's just a guy on a cocaine bender writing a play he'll never finish. Whether you think it's pretentious or profound (hint: it's both), one thing is clear—Jennifer Lawrence earns every ounce of your attention and maybe a few gallons of blood.Across these three films, the panel explores how motherhood in horror isn't just about nurture gone wrong. It's about architecture—both of the home and the psyche. It's about women who are worshipped, consumed, blamed, and erased. And yes, sometimes it's about cockroaches.Films Discussed:Run (2020) – dir. Another glamorous Cannes Film Festival has ended, after an exciting fortnight on the Côte d'Azur that drew the likes of Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Pattinson, Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Kristen Stewart, and many others. Stars of documentaries also turned up: Shia LaBeouf, whose exploits as founder of a free theater company in L.A. are chronicled in Slauson Rec, and Julian Assange, focus of the documentary The Six Billion Dollar Man. The latter film, directed by Eugene Jarecki, won a Special Jury Prize marking the 10th anniversary of the L'Oeil d'or award, which goes to the top documentary at Cannes. Imago, directed by Chechen filmmaker Déni Oumar Pitsaev, took the 2025 L'Oeil d'or prize. For the first time, Deadline's Doc Talk podcast traveled to Cannes to record interviews and to moderate a panel at the American Pavilion. Today's episode of the show is built around our AmPav discussion on the state of the documentary industry which featured panelists Vanessa Hope (director of Invisible Nation); Joe Tufano, VP of Distribution at Submarine Entertainment, and Catherine Quantschnigg, Producer, Sales at Noah Media Group. Tufano explains how documentary filmmakers are increasingly moving to a territory-by-territory approach to sell their features in the absence of acquisitions for worldwide distribution. Hope tells us why she considered going the self-distribution route in the U.S. for her award-winning film that explores Taiwan as it contends with almost daily threats from mainland China. And Quantschnigg reveals how the distribution landscape has changed dramatically in only a few years since Netflix acquired Noah Media Group's acclaimed film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. That's on the latest edition of the Doc Talk podcast, hosted by Oscar winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, Shirley) and Matt Carey, Deadline's documentary editor. In the twenty-first century alone, women filmmakers have succeeded at directing every size, genre, and style of motion picture. Their movies have won Oscars (Free Solo), made actors into household names (Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone), received induction into the Library of Congress's National Film Registry (Real Women Have Curves), and become worldwide box office phenomena (Captain Marvel, Deep Impact). Nevertheless in 2023, the year of Barbie, women directed only 12% of the top 250 movies in America. demonstrating how far moviemaking remains from gender parity. When women filmmakers succeed, they do so against these odds. Break the Frame (Oxford UP, 2025) is a collection of 24 career-spanning interviews with America's celebrated, reigning, and rising women filmmakers. Each conversation considers the director's complete filmography as a map of their evolving artistry and evidence of their unassailable contributions to a historically misogynist industry. Author Kevin Smokler listens as women filmmakers speak to the struggle and triumphs of developing and directing movies that are shaping how the film business sees women in the director's chair, and how their audiences see themselves and each other. Mother! from 2017 is not a typical movie you would show to your mother or father as the screenplay was written in just 5 days. The viewers were divided down the middle on ratings and it was considered a controversial film. Filled with religious symbolism that was loosely based on key moments of the old and new testament scriptures. Whether you consider this film good or bad, it will certainly will force you to dig deeper into it.Written and Directed by Darren Aronofsky.Starring Jennifer Lawrence as the mother, Javier Bardem as Him, Ed Harris as Man (Adam), and Michelle Pfeiffer as Woman (Eve). It's been nearly six years since Hailey Bieber last appeared on the cover of Vogue—and let's just say, a lot has changed. Now the face of Rhode, one of the most talked-about celebrity skincare brands, Vogue's summer cover star is also stepping into a new chapter as a mother to her son, Jack Blues. On this episode of The Run-Through, writer Alessandra Codinha sits down with Chloe Malle and Deputy Editor Taylor Antrim and shares insights from her time with Hailey—covering everything from the intense scrutiny she faces online, her relationship with her husband Justin Bieber, and the deeply personal story of her difficult childbirth.Earlier on the show, Radhika Seth reports live from the Croisette at the Cannes Film Festival with the latest from the red carpet and the big screen. She recaps her favorite films so far—and the buzzy ones she's most looking forward to. As Taylor notes, "deranged mothers" seem to be trending this season, with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson's Die, My Love making headlines after its festival premiere. Radhika also weighs in on the controversy swirling around Eddington, Ari Aster's much-hyped follow-up to Beau Is Afraid (spoiler alert: it didn't make her top picks.)And of course, no Cannes coverage would be complete without a fashion moment. The group crowned their unofficial “Queens of Cannes,” with Jeremy Strong earning his title for perfectly coordinating his bucket hats and suits, and Alexander Skarsgård turning heads in thigh-high Saint Laurent boots.

In this episode, we talk to Hannah Kent. The South Australian author burst onto the literary scene in 2013, with the publication of her debut historical novel, Burial Rites, about the execution of a young woman in Iceland, two centuries ago. The book was a global bestseller, optioned by Hollywood with Jennifer Lawrence attached to star in the film version, but Kent’s success also gave her that thing that all writers crave - not fame and fortune, but time and space to write. She followed Burial Rites with two more hit novels, The Good People and Devotion, not to mention a screenplay for Netflix, and now something different - a memoir. Kent talks to senior writer Konrad Marshall about “Always Home, Always Homesick”, which walks readers through the early life experiences that set Kent on the writing path, followed by her formative time as a teenage exchange student in Iceland, plus the forensic and emotional construction of her smash hit novel, and finally, the ghost who lingers and lives with her still.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
