30 Minutes of Improv

Sorry for the delay everyone this is our first episode of the new year we did a live gig at the Talleyrand in Levenshulme where we had our first live audience for our podcast. This weeks episode leading up to christmas, Niall and Aaron play as a duo together. Sadly our guest wasn't able to join this improv. The improvisation is rather aggressive at parts but in later sections it becomes more friendly, light and easy going ending with a cheesy jazzy bit at the end. Even though this improvisation has an easy going feel it has very dark, atonal and bizarre moments. We hope you enjoy and we apologise for our two week delay. We explain all this in the podcast. This week unfortunately we had to do a shorter improv because of room complications. We were joined by Laurel Saunders on Clarinet and vocals. We met Laurel at a free improv jam night when she sang, after that we just had to have her on the show. This weeks improv has dark undertones with jazzy and obscure moments.

This week x_CurvyBarbie_x plays violin with Niall and Aaron. The improvisation has hints of Spanish, Celtic, Country and Christmas music. x_CurvyBarbie_x is a video game streamer. This weeks episode is probably the most melodically tonal episode we've ever done. Niran (a bass player) changes it up by playing some ecstatic riffs on his electric guitar. Sacha brings some jazzy vibes with his fretless bass. From Frank Zappa to Steely Dan to cheesy blues and other genres we've created a real masterpiece this episode. Enjoy

This episode Athanasia Kontou replaces Aaron Breeze on piano while Aaron performs on Viola. This episode can be best described as a soundscape with the following adjectives: ridiculous, playful, spiritual, yet chaotic. Imagine the interaction between a romantic and melancholic clown with the dragon of chaos. This is the most guests we've had on our podcast so far, with new guests Heléna Walsh and James Waide, and the return of two previous guests Tom Hilary and Nate Chivers. This weeks improv we decided to do something different by introducing more instruments to our simple duo of piano and guitar. We used Melodica, Synthesiser, and percussion performed on guitar. Our own virtual orchestra! This set up provided us with a more textured improvisation and less of a melody and accompaniment structure. A short analysis follows at the end of the improvisation which explores what we created in this half an hour of improvisation.

This weeks episode features Ollie Clark on Cello. Mellow harmonies with vary sounds throughout. Ollie really creates his own ambience in this improvisation.

A very Flamenco improvisation. Niall is back from Spain so we took full advantage of what he learnt while over in Granada.

This week's episode features Aaron Breeze on piano and sampler and Simeon Evans on baritone saxophone and live electronics in this contemporary improvisation. Simeon and Aaron talk about the good old days with Simeon's trademark 'hosepipe' and various other improvisation projects they've worked on.

This week, Niall is still away studying flamenco guitar in Spain, so we have special guest Tywi Roberts who is improvising on electronics through the medium of 'live coding'. Since Niall is in Spain studying Flamenco guitar, we have Nate Chivers in his stead playing electric guitar. Prepare yourself for an improv consisting of noise, twee tunes, drones, and gnarly guitar sounds.This is the first episode where we start introducing our podcasts. It makes sense if we have guests, but we just didn't think of this in the past...Also, we have now added review sections after the improv where we talk about what happened.

The most coherent improv yet. In this one Niall brings an electric guitar instead of his classical. Hints of Blues and jazz with some hypnotic and psychedelic drones. Chill out and enjoy!

This episode Niall and Aaron create a very contemporary and dissonant improvisation. Using microtones, dark harmonies and distinct rhythms. This improvisation has hints of Blues, Jazz and alternative chromaticism.

Our second episode features Tom Hillary on percussion adding a totally different dynamic to the original duo. Hints of Colonial America, early film scores and contemporary compositions.
