In this episode, Neil and Jason talk to the prolific British composer David Lowe about his rise to success and his musical milestones along the way—from work experience at BBC Radio Birmingham to composing the BBC theme that has heralded the corporation's global news output for more than 25 years. With familiar theme tunes for internationally syndicated TV programmes such as ‘Grand Designs' and ‘5th Gear', unforgettable commercials for British Airways and DHL, and even a number one in the indie chart, it's all been a dream come true for a Sutton Coldfield schoolboy with a passion for synthesisers. Who are Rob Morrison & Deane Hutton? I'm glad you asked. Rob and Deane are two legendary scientists and science communicators from Adelaide, Australia. For 18 years, they brought science to the living rooms of my country as hosts of “The Curiosity Show”.Absolute pioneers in kids television, they assumed intelligence of their audience and brought complicated concepts to life with simple and practical demonstrations using every day household objects. The show did what it says on the box - it encouraged curiosity. To be ok with the feeling of not knowing why something is the way it is, and using that feeling to drive an exploration towards an answer.Wearing turtlenecks, with great moustaches and all to the soundtrack of some excellently odd Synthesisers - these guys paved the way for the megastars of science communication today. You can check out clips and episodes of The Curiosity Show on their YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@CuriosityShowTickets for live shows are here:SydneyMelbourneStay up to date on more upcoming shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else? Bells in San Gimignano reimagined by Jase Warner. "'Campane Italiane' features a field recording of bells ringing out in San Gimignano, a hill town in Italy's Tuscany region. "The composition is made up of multiple layers of the original recording, each accompanied with its own particular drone texture. Synthesiser tracks have also been added to compliment the patterns and movement of the bells."

Yorkshire churchyard reimagined by Cities and Memory. This was a moment of pure peace, a snapshot of rural life in England, and for the reimagined piece we were keen not to intrude on that. Instead, we've recorded two separate Moog synthesiser improvisations live over the field recording, responding to the moments when the birds are most active or quieter, and bringing in more activity when the church bells strike ten o'clock. We hope it preserves the sense of idyllic piece from the original recording.

Hello to you, it's episode 1 of season 2! Warren is in his element as he welcomes his first very special guest into his garden for the best episode of this new season yet. It's like him and Hannah stepped into the wheelbarrow firepit in front of them and got lobbed back in time to when Hannah tore open the Christmas paper to reveal her Casio VL1. The keyboard synth bleeps boldly into the cool night air. Music and voices mingle with rising bonfire smoke and ash floats softly down like snowflakes. Warren sings his own lyrics to the Star Wars main theme tune, then Hannah summons Mozart with a glass harmonica. It's truly fantastical. Attach Decay Sustain Release. Thank you for listening, enjoy! See the Casio VL1 keyboard synthesiser here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CCYph8bnTrt/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Matt Fleming is a musician (under his own name or One Formation) and photographer/videographer (Minus Tone). In this podcast he plays a mix of solo acoustic songs and synthesiser generated instrumental pieces. The two forms come together memorably in 'Floating' so listen out for that one in Part 2 of this podcast! He talks about utilising engineering and production skills learned on a commercial music course at university to work with young people in Slough. He talks candidly about those sometimes tough but rewarding years in community services. In the end government cuts resulted in the closure of most activity centres. Sadly we can see the negative results of such policies in many of our towns and cities. Matt has recently set up his own photography and video business which is how Invisible Folk became aware of his talents. He continues to encourage artistic growth in the local community with the Music & Words Club at The Hope, a vibrant new community space in Windsor. He organises a twice monthly gathering of musicians, poets, singers, composers, electronic artists etc who showcase original material. He is also involved in occasional pop-up events at the Loading Bay Cafe (Windsor).

Porous Borders: Experimental Music in the Southern Hemisphere
This week on Porous Borders I'm speaking to Duto Hardono, who is a sound artist based in Bandung, Indonesia. If you're in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, you might recognise his name because he just in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago playing some shows for the AsiaTOPA festival. If you're in Canberra you might also recognise Duto's name from the Contemporary Worlds exhibition last year, where one of his pieces was performed. If you're not in Australia, you might know Duto as the owner of the fantastic cassette label Hasana Editions, which has been getting some pretty good press lately. In the past couple of years they've released work from people like such as Kate Carr and Will Guthrie, along with a number of Indonesian artists. It's an amazing label; I've listened to everything on it and I absolutely recommend that you do as well, especially if you're stuck inside at the moment. Duto also teaches at the Bandung Institute of Technology and he's a very interesting modular synth performer. We talk about all of that in the interview and a lot more, so please enjoy,A couple of other notes: I'll be inside for the next two weeks (mandatory self-isolation after overseas travel), but the podcast will continue as normal. I also have a new Anquan release coming out in the next week or so, so keep an eye out for that. This week's episode is the first in a series of three episodes focusing on the Jogja Noise Bombing collective from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Jogja Noise Bombing's annual festival is coming up on 25 and 26 January, so in the weeks leading up to the festival, I'll be interviewing a few members of the collective. If you're unfamiliar with JNB, they are most famous for their guerilla noise performances in public places around Jogjakarta.First up is an interview with my friend Sean Stellfox. Sean is a noise musician originally from Delaware in the United States but for the past 5 years he has been based in Central Java in Indonesia where he's toured extensively and been involved with projects like the Jogja Noise Bombing Collective, the Noise Bombing label, and the band ASU (USA). He generally performs under the name Bossbattle, but sometimes as Stellfox. In most of his projects Sean primarily works with locally-made and self-built synthesisers.Last year Sean co-authored the book Jogja Noise Bombing: From the Street to the Stage, which is kind of an oral history of the Jogja Noise Bombing Collective. You download the book for free as an ebook or pdf file from archive.org (check the shownotes for a link), and it's in both English and Indonesian. In 2019 Sean and I also toured together in Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and so we talk about that a little bit in the podcast as well. Please rate, review and subscribe to the show on iTunes or whatever else you use to get podcasts, and if you know people who would like the show, please share it with them.Tracks played: ASU (USA) Live in Kyoto, ASU (USA) Live at Jogja Noise Bombing 2018LINKS:Concrescence Records YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqKkFOv5-FOVTTbl0oojrfw? This weeks improv we decided to do something different by introducing more instruments to our simple duo of piano and guitar. We used Melodica, Synthesiser, and percussion performed on guitar. Our own virtual orchestra! This set up provided us with a more textured improvisation and less of a melody and accompaniment structure. A short analysis follows at the end of the improvisation which explores what we created in this half an hour of improvisation.
In episode eleven of People Movers, I speak to Matt Adair from City Frequencies. City Frequencies performed Random Acts Of Elevator Music as part of the 2006 Melbourne Fringe Festival, followed by a second tour in 2009. Random Acts Of Elevator Music saw Matt and his co-collaborator, Nick, building a synthesiser and a keyboard into briefcases and carrying them into over 100 elevators all over Melbourne's CBD. ------------------------------- Some of the music in this episode was provided by Tim & Dave of Umbra: https://www.facebook.com/umbraduo/ Additional music: 'Heliotrope' - Blue Dot Sessions via Free Music Archive The logo was provided by Greta Larkins: http://fashgif.tumblr.com/ Follow People Movers on Instagram: @peoplemoverspodcast Follow me on Twitter: @LindsJGreen Find more information, photos & transcripts at www.peoplemoverspodcast.com. Welcome to the Savaggio family. We are Rudi and Toni. Brothers without a father since we lost Roberto. We never knew our mother. In the beginning, we were scientists. We experimented. We brought different sounds and textures to the street, club and stage and watched as our audiences showed surprise and then excitement. Synthesisers, electric bongos, drum machines, violins, effects… we tried and tested them all to perfect our live sets. We searched for signature sound. We still search for it. It’s part of today’s adventure. We busked on the streets. We played clubs. We played festivals. We released on labels. We made good friends. We made music with them. And sometimes they came to join the party. Now we know what makes you move, what you’re not expecting. But we need you for that. We want you for that. We won’t alienate you when you’re in the club. We hold our audiences close. Whether you like it or not, you’re part of our performance. We provide for each other. No end in sight yet. We perform solo or duo. Either way, we’ll keep exploring what makes you want to nod your head, tap your foot. We’ll keep asking questions of the norm. We’ll keep practising and perfecting an art that knows no boundaries. https://soundcloud.com/savaggiomusic Download for free on The Artist Union

Due to the political climate in Soviet Russia of the day, Yevgeny Murzin was forced to build his synthesizer in secret with little access to electronic parts. Over next two decades (pre and post war), the ANS as it was known, was a self-financed, largely secret labour of love; Murzin had to work on it in his spare time over two decades with help from a like-minded, tight-knit circle of composers and technicians. Murzin finally completed construction of the ANS in 1958 and it was subsequently used by a number of pioneering 20th Century Russian composers such as Stanislav Kreichi, Alfred Schnittke, Edison Denisov, Sofia Gubaidulina and Edward Artemiev. The unearthly tones of the ANS were perfectly suited to the era of Soviet space exploration, and became the soundtrack instrument of choice for a series of classic Russian sci-fi films, the most famous being Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris released in 1972. Meet those who knew Murzin and saved his instrument from obscurity: Eduard Artemiev (celebrated soundtrack composer and Tarkovsky collaborator), Stanislav Kreichi (composer and de facto guardian of the ANS), Andrei Smirnov (Theremin Institute Moscow). Other synthesiser pioneers contribute including Suzanne Ciani (US composer) and Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory (Russian synth collector) as well as current synthesiser aficionados Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Presented by keyboard player and long-standing Russophile, Jon Ouin. Image: Yevgeny Murzin

Richard Kuiper [aka Mouse] dj/producer : techno : acid Richard Kuiper, or Mouse, sound engineer and designer, likes to produce music in an eccentric fasion. Allthough fasinated by underground culture and mainstream; mouse likes to bend the guidelines and aproach the music without all his knowledge. Constantly breaking patterns in workflow, while following a basic path in the techno genre. It started on a commodore 64 vic with a software synthesiser program- "Synthesiser." As a young boy he spent hours figuring out what all the knobs did; without knowledge, sounds came and went. And sessions mostly ended when there was no sound comming from the program. In the end he did not understand anything about synthesis, but surely made sounds that where sent to space. Or maybe send from space. The music flowes just flows! On the commodore, Mouse had the vision of starting a studio where sound could be manipulated and captured. Later he started programming on the well known 486 computer, and made modules that where very popular in the 90s. This was the moment Mouse started to realise that the sounds he really wanted to make were impossible on any instrument. This realization opened doorways to infinte possibillities in a still limited domain. Currently educated as soundengineer, he still likes to start a music project as if it is his first. Ït keeps the student in me alive" - Richard Kuiper [aka/ Mouse] He mostly works on obsecure, unique and quite underrated electronic instruments and is a big fan of audio tape. Especially the analog sound captured on the compact cassette. For Mouse there are no rules in audio, only guidelines. http://soundcloud.com/mouse777 http://www.youtube.com/user/beatbasta BWLR-P010 Richard Kuiper, Amsterdam, NL
