Live coding has emerged as a compelling medium for developers to showcase their skills, engage with communities, and build personal brands. It's a digital stage where the immediacy of programming meets the unpredictability of live performance, creating a unique interactive experience for both the coder and the audience.Embarking on a live coding journey is akin to setting sail on open waters; it's thrilling, challenging, and often uncharted territory for many developers. It demands a balance between the intimacy of coding in solitude and the public nature of streaming your process in real time. As such, the experience of live coding is multifaceted. On one hand, it fosters growth and camaraderie among developers who share a passion for technology. On the other, it can be fraught with the pressures of public scrutiny and the demand for constant engagement.Live coding is not merely about writing code; it's also about storytelling and sharing one's development journey with an audience. This creates a space where developers can find support and feedback, potentially accelerating their learning process. Yet, the dependency on real-time feedback poses a risk to a developer's self-reliance and growth. Too much reliance on audience input can lead to superficial learning, where understanding is shallow, and problem-solving skills are underdeveloped.Creating a positive online environment is crucial for a successful live coding stream. A toxic or disruptive audience can significantly detract from the experience, while a supportive and engaged community can enhance it. Curating an audience, therefore, becomes an art form in itself, requiring the streamer to establish rules and boundaries that encourage constructive interaction and deter negative behavior.Beyond live coding, there are myriad avenues for personal branding within the tech industry. Content creation, in its various forms, offers developers the opportunity to share their expertise and insights. Whether it's through blogging, video tutorials, or podcasts, finding the right medium that resonates with an individual's style and preferences is key to building a strong personal brand. As the developer's role continues to evolve in this digital era, the importance of content creation and personal branding cannot be overstated. Developers who share their journey authentically and engage with their audience effectively can carve out a unique space in the tech community. This not only helps in building a personal brand but also creates connections that can lead to professional growth and opportunities.---------------------------------------------------

Get a behind the scenes look at the Art && Code podcast series. In this wrap-up episode, AMT Lab's Podcast Producer Jabrenee Hussie, Social Media and Marketing Coordinator Ashley Offman, and Lead Researcher Hannah Brainard discuss key takeaways from the series. They look back at some of their favorite interview moments, from ethics of artificial intelligence as an artistic tool to the social scene of live-coding. The Art && Code Series, in partnership with the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, featured seven artists working in live visual performance, immersive design, and software development. Artists included Zoe Sandoval, Matthew Ragan, Kate Sicchio, Sarah Groff Hennigh-Palermo, Char Stiles, Olivia Jack and David Lublin.
Olivia Jack is a programmer and artist who works frequently with open-source software, cartography, live coding, and experimental interfaces. In this episode of the Art && Code Podcast series, Jack talks with AMT Lab Lead Researcher Hannah Brainard about Hydra, a browser-based open source software she developed for live-coding visuals. With a background in computer engineering, Jack was first introduced to the world of live coding in Bogota, Columbia while working primarily as a programmer. Though initially skeptical, she quickly connected with the community and found that watching artists think through the creative process helped shift her approach to software development. Beyond Hydra, Jack's research interests include algorithmic representations of uncertainty and chaos, peer2peer networking, and live coding as a way to enter into a continuous dialogue or feedback loop between herself and her computer.
In the third episode of the Art&&Code podcast series AMT Lead Researcher, Hannah Brainard, talks with Char Stiles, a computational artist, educator and programmer based in Brooklyn, NY. Stiles works creatively in the lower levels of graphical computational systems and is currently at the MIT Media Lab's Future Sketches group. In this podcast, Stiles talks about how her background in painting introduced her to the world of live visuals. While enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University, Stiles picked up gigs as a VJ and has since gone on to perform internationally, including festivals such as Electric Forest, and Mutek Nexus. Additionally, Stiles shared about the importance of working collaboratively in the creative process through groups like Livecode.nyc and Hex House. Stiles dives into her current and recent work with galactic algorithms and extending live-coding visuals into augmented reality spaces.
For the second episode of AMT Lab's Art && Code series, Social Media and Marketing Coordinator Ashley Offman talks with Sarah Groff Hennigh-Palermo and Dr. Kate Sicchio, two-thirds of the live coding trio known as Codie. Sarah and Kate discuss how their prior experiences in academia and at tech giants influence the art they create. They also talk of their interdisciplinary approaches to performance, including the integration of coding in live performance, as well as the nuances and differences that exist in the live coding and DIY sound scenes worldwide. Sarah and Kate discuss the performative nature of the live coding scene and how, in this discipline, the code is the show's star. The trio uplifts the beauty and importance of making errors in live coding and the creative process at large, highlighting the potential for innovation and education.

It's the Season 10 finale of the Elixir Wizards podcast! José Valim, Guillaume Duboc, and Giuseppe Castagna join Wizards Owen Bickford and Dan Ivovich to dive into the prospect of types in the Elixir programming language! They break down their research on set-theoretical typing and highlight their goal of creating a type system that supports as many Elixir idioms as possible while balancing simplicity and pragmatism. José, Guillaume, and Giuseppe talk about what initially sparked this project, the challenges in bringing types to Elixir, and the benefits that the Elixir community can expect from this exciting work. Guillaume's formalization and Giuseppe's "cutting-edge research" balance José's pragmatism and "Guardian of Orthodoxy" role. Decades of theory meet the needs of a living language, with open challenges like multi-process typing ahead. They come together with a shared joy of problem-solving that will accelerate Elixir's continued growth. Key Topics Discussed in this Episode: Adding type safety to Elixir through set theoretical typing How the team chose a type system that supports as many Elixir idioms as possible Balancing simplicity and pragmatism in type system design Addressing challenges like typing maps, pattern matching, and guards The tradeoffs between Dialyzer and making types part of the core language Advantages of typing for catching bugs, documentation, and tooling The differences between typing in the Gleam programming language vs. Elixir The possibility of type inference in a set-theoretic type system The history and development of set-theoretic types over 20 years Gradual typing techniques for integrating typed and untyped code How José and Giuseppe initially connected through research papers Using types as a form of "mechanized documentation" The risks and tradeoffs of choosing syntax Cheers to another decade of Elixir! Specifically, we implemented 75% of the OAuth 2 device flow on top of AWS Cognito to allow our file upload CLI application to get some credentials. In order to implement this flow, we need to store some secrets. We decided to use DynamoDB and spent a lot of time discussing our data design and how and why we used the famous and controversial DynamoDB single table design principle. Jacob is a mathematician, computer scientist, and notably, co-organizer of the Boston Computation Club. Today he joined us to give an interactive lesson on web-scraping, with Worlde-solving as a motivating case study. This was a fun exercise and one we will almost certainly follow up on in the future. We worked through parsing the ... DOM? Is that the right word? IDK. And then entering text. And then actually utilizing the feedback offered by the game to start interactively solving the puzzle. We concluded with a brief conversation about the complexity of handling the clues in the context of words that have more than one of a given letter. CODE VIDEO
We tried to do some planning, but this one ended up as chaotic as ever. Luke coded the entire time while we chatted about the Leafs/Red Wings four-goalie extravaganza, covered obscure icing stats, and attempted to review 2021 free agency. Chaos is fun.

Art Tools is our new segment on experimental digital tools of creation. We speak with Olivia Jack on her browser-based visual live coding synthesizer called hydra. Episode notes Today we're kicking off a new segment called Art Tools, a series of mini episodes with the creators of innovative and experimental software for making art, music and other creative expression. In our very first episode Critical Code we spoke with the artist Sarah Groff Hennigh-Palermo, who created her own library and language La Habra for making live visual artwork with code. Today we're speaking with the artist and programmer Olivia Jack on her browser-based visual livecoding software Hydra. Hydra is a web-based video synthesizer. Olivia describes live coding as writing code in real time to make visuals and/or music as part of a performance. Originally begun as a series of explorations in the browser, Hydra is now used by a large community of live coding performers who perform in clubs and other venues, as well as in online streamed performances throughout the pandemic. There are many resources for getting started with Hydra, and a number of spin-off projects including PIXELJAM, also by Olivia, which allows multiple performers to do live coding together. There are also periodic online meetups where live coders worldwide meet up to talk and show off their works created with Hydra. In this episode Olivia speaks on her background, the experiments that led to the creation of Hydra, and the choices she's made in its design that has led to adoption by a large community of live coders creating visual works in the browser with Hydra.

I spoke with Michael Jolley. He is a Developer Advocate at Vonage and as he describes, he spends his days focused on helping others to succeed. Beyond his work duties, he live stream coding 3 times a week for about 3 to 4 hour each time. It is a lot of commitment! This is not going on for a long time. Just about 2 years, starting back in 2018. We discussed how this has helped him landing his current job. We also went through his process on how to put a live stream together, how to build community from it, what motivates him to do this and a lot more. If you are a parent, check our how Michael is engaging his daughters with his initiatives too. In the end Michael talks about the need for all of us to be more open and kind to each other.
