Between The Covers : Conversations with Writers in Fiction, Nonfiction & Poetry
Today's guest is writer and critic Martha Anne Toll. Through a discussion of her latest novel Duet for One we explore the perennial mystery of writing and art-making, namely how to render something that lives beyond representation, and how words can become a vehicle to evoke what words themselves cannot adequately describe. In this case, […] The post Martha Anne Toll : Duet for One appeared first on Tin House.
In episode 249 of Outside the Round, Matt sits down with the sibling trio Daves Highway; Delaney, Zachary, and Erika, to talk about their unique journey in music. From growing up harmonizing in church to building a national fanbase through YouTube and social media, the trio shares how their Mississippi roots, family bond, and tight harmonies have shaped their musical identity. They reflect on early viral success, their evolution as songwriters and performers, and the balance of business and family dynamics. The conversation also dives into their experiences moving to Nashville, recording new music, and staying grounded in faith and authenticity. Whether you've followed them from the beginning or are just discovering their sound, this episode offers an inspiring look into what makes Daves Highway a standout act in today's country and Americana scene. So many great singing artists lost to the world of late! Almost a month ago now, the great Welsh tenor Stuart Burrows (07 February 1933 - 29 June 2025) left this mortal coil at the age of 92. Burrows was an artist of extraordinary technique, elegance, and sincerity and it has been an honor and a delight to put together this episode which celebrates his career. Because he was a favorite partner of so many exceptional divas, I decided to focus this episode on Burrows singing duets with some of the most important divas of his era. Included in the episode are Beverly Sills, Gundula Janowitz, Joan Sutherland, Renata Scotto, Leontyne Price, Nelly Miricioiu, Gwendolyn Killebrew, Margaret Price, and Reri Grist, singing Mozart, Massenet, Offenbach, Gounod, Berlioz, Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, and even some Puccini. “The boys” are represented by José van Dam and Countermelody favorite Donald Gramm. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Burrows was a popular television star in the UK, starring in the eponymous BBC2 series, Stuart Burrows Sings. The episode also features two snippets from that show, one a duet with the beautiful lyric mezzo Diana Montague (whose husband tenor David Rendall died earlier this week). The episode begins with a tribute to the beloved Welsh pop contralto Iris Williams, who died on July 11 at the age of 79. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

Efekt? Dźwiękowa opowieść pełna przestrzeni, melancholii i nieoczywistych emocji. To właśnie motyw nowych miejsc, nowych perspektyw i odważnych wyborów stanowi główny temat tekstu. „Thin Air” opowiada o tęsknocie za ucieczką i poszukiwaniu siebie ukazując emocjonalny krajobraz pomiędzy „tu i teraz” a „tym, kim chcemy być”. Opowieść osnuta jest wokół relacji dwojga ludzi, ale można ją także odczytać jako intymny wewnętrzny dialog. Pełen refleksji, pytań i nadziei - powiedział Michał Salamon.

Ed Sheeran has been making major headlines this week, highlighted by his emotional duet with James Blunt at Portman Road Stadium in Ipswich on July 13. According to People Magazine and Z100, Sheeran stunned the crowd by bringing out Blunt for a heartfelt performance of Blunt's hit “Goodbye My Lover,” a moment Sheeran later called one of his top three onstage experiences of all time. On Instagram, he reflected on how formative Blunt's music was for him growing up, sharing the full circle feeling of sharing the stage with his childhood hero. This concert also saw Sheeran debut an unreleased song titled “Slowly,” which was performed after he responded to a fan's sign in the crowd. Clips of both performances have been circulating widely on social media, with fans and music publications buzzing about the intimate nature of the surprise Blunt duet and the debut of new material.Sheeran's Portman Road shows generated more excitement as he played crowd favorites like “Eyes Closed” and “Hearts Don't Break Around Here,” both of which have been making the rounds on YouTube through fan-recorded videos. The Portman Road run is being seen as both a homecoming and a creative showcase suggesting a period of artistic renewal for Sheeran. In business and upcoming appearances, Sheeran's long-standing involvement with his Notting Hill bar Bertie Blossoms and his record label Gingerbread Man Records continues, but no brand new ventures have been reported this week. Looking ahead, Sheeran is slated for a highly anticipated show in Oslo at Ullevaal Stadion on July 27, an event expected to be a summer highlight for Scandinavia, per the latest concert listings. American fans can also look forward to Sheeran's confirmed return to Tampa's Raymond James Stadium next summer, with the Tampa Bay Times and local outlets already anticipating high demand. On the entertainment crossover front, Sheeran made headlines by challenging Chris Hemsworth to play drums at one of his stadium shows, a clip that landed in a new trailer for Hemsworth's “Limitless Live” special, driving additional buzz in both the music and celebrity press. To top it off, Sheeran has been announced as a headliner for the upcoming 2025 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas this September, which will be streamed live on Hulu, offering fans global access to his festival performance. There have been no credible reports of new music releases or collaborations outside his notable live surprises, nor have there been any confirmed controversies, public statements on personal matters, or verified social media scandals. Ed's week stands out for memorable performances, headline-grabbing collaborations, and continued global stage presence, reinforcing his reputation as one of the few contemporary pop stars commanding stadiums with just a guitar and charisma.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

Rodney gets a temporary houseguest when Cadman winds up in his brain after an incident with a wraith dart in Duet. Why did the Atlantis expedition never take the jumper cloaking technology and make it personal sized? It's weird that no one tells Katie Brown what's going on with Rodney. It doesn't seem to really be a secret and also something that would easily explain his seemingly strange actions and attitude. This is a really fun episode especially after the very serious and heavy start to season 2. Let us know: who would be the worst and the best brain to be stuck in?

Are you trying to find “home” in an appearance, place, or building, rather than in people who love you? Are you trying to find “love” in a world where love is increasingly alien, or in people who won't see you as God sees you nor encourage you into all God created you to be? Are you so committed to trying to buy pizza in a Chinese restaurant that you haven't even noticed it's not on the menu? Joanna Serenko is an original singer-songwriter. She grew up in Cleveland and moved to St. Louis at a young age, where her professional career as a musician began. Joanna found her voice by performing and exploring different outlets of music, such as choir, musical theater, and singing in church. By high school, Joanna began writing her own songs and performing as an opening act for local bands in St. Louis. It wasn't long before Joanna was headlining her own shows and recording her own original music. At 18 years old, shortly after her high school graduation, Joanna got the incredible opportunity to perform on Season 18 of an international reality television singing competition, NBC's “The Voice”. During her time on the show, she worked with renowned celebrities such as Nick Jonas and the Jonas Brothers, John Legend, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and James Taylor. This experience helped to open many doors for her music and served as a great launching pad for Joanna's long-term success in the music industry. After the show, Joanna released her debut album, “Best of Me,” available on all streaming platforms. Since then, Joanna has graduated from nursing school and now embarks on a new adventure of pursing full-time music as she tours the country. Learn more under the "2025 Tour" tab! Martha Anne Toll is a novelist and literary and cultural critic, also a violist whose classical music training informs her artistic practice. She recently published her second novel, Duet for One, a beautiful love story based on the lives of musicians.his book is also about the death of a mother, and releasing this conversation on Mother's Day (in our countries) has a particular resonance for those of us whose mothers have died, and Martha and I talked about processing our own grief. We focused on both this book and her novel Three Muses, which I also recommend. You'll hear about her high and low points as a violist, different ways she has helped with programs related to social justice, and her involvement in the literary world including supporting less-represented authors. We also talked about the classical music world and living true to your values. Martha Toll comes to writing professionally after a career dedicated to social justice, and she shared some great perspectives on both pursuits. I've linked Martha's list of book and author suggestions in the complete show notes on my website, where you'll also find other episodes linked that you'll like, the transcript and the video!Martha Anne Toll websiteOriginal MerchCan you buy this independent podcaster a coffee? Passing the thermometer of conversation over the rock and roll news to see where the mercury rises, which this week includes … … the new Barbra Streisand duets album. Duets are ‘playlets', small intense dramas that depend on human interaction, but so many are recorded separately (including, tragically, Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell). … but … duets you HAVE to hear! eg Cash & Carter, Otis Redding & Carla Thomas, Ray Charles & Betty Carter, Siouxsie & Morrissey, Nick Cave & Kylie, Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush. … the extraordinary story of the rebirth and Indian Summer of Mississippi John Hurt after 40 years of invisibility. … blues lyrics that now seem unimaginable. … Frank Zappa as a drug dealer? Miles Davis as a pimp? Cyndi Lauper as a trophy wife? Real or made-up Miami Vice rock star cameos. … great opening lines – “We got married in a fever …!” … how you always learn something you never knew about someone from their obituary - like Mike Peters' involvement in the highest altitude concert ever performed (on Everest with Glenn Tilbrook and Slim Jim Phantom). … where people listen to the Word In Your Ear “poddy” – eg in the bath, in court, at wedding receptions, by the Allman Brothers' graveside. Liz takes a deep dive into Usenet archives and tells Anika about fandom's earliest discussions of Star Trek: Deep Space 9! (Please note, we are still having audio problems -- despite literally nothing changing in our set ups, Liz's feed is echoing on Anika's channel. This means Anika had to be muted for a lot of the time. At this point we may have to get two tin cans and a really big ball of string to record…) What was Usenet? (Please do not fact check Liz on the technical details.) And who was using it? The initial response to DS9 before "Emissary" aired… …and after. Here's Roger Tang's 5 January 1993 post with his impressions: "EMISSARY betrayed far too many of the storytelling flaws that have plague[d] TNG over the last two-three years." The very gendered language of the era: Picard and Bashir are "weenies", Dax and Kira are "chicks", but Dax is also a "bimbo" or "airhead" and Kira "has balls". And that's before we get to the slurs… Anika defends Terry Farrell from the Trekkies of 32 years ago. We may not be a Pittcast, but we ARE ride or die for Trinity Santos, thank you for asking. Michael Lee Jacobs' commentary on "Emissary": "It was almost painful to watch TNG right after the two wonderful hours of DS9 this evening." How much are these Usenet posters representative of the wider fandom? Where were other conversations taking place? Babylon 5 was The Orville of the 1990s, in terms of its fans coming into Star Trek spaces to say, "Stop watching that new Trek with the Black lead, this show with the white dude is way better!" A really fascinating (and incomplete) debate about whether the Garak/Bashir interactions in "Past Prologue" were intended as a homophobic depiction of queerness. A bunch of straight men say no! The one thing from this era (and the years following it) that we would like to bring back is people sharing their long-form thoughts on new episodes of TV. Like this post on "Duet" which Liz didn't get around to talking about! Finally, shout out to this prediction, a week after "Emissary" aired, which was completely wrong but also … kind of right?

Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHThe episode kicks off with some narration, setting up the magic of the holiday season and how we're all hoping for the perfect Christmas… but it never quite works out that way.We meet Chuck, who hires a bucket lifter to get his Christmas decorations as high as possible. He doesn't care what his neighbors think—especially his next-door neighbor, Manny, who seems to have some beef with Chuck, despite their kids dating. Then there's Jennifer, who is stressed because her mom, Linda, is dating a younger man and bringing him home for the holidays. Jennifer's dad, Robert, is coming too, but Linda hasn't told him about her new boyfriend.Josh Hill comes home for Christmas before his move to Sydney. He buys his parents tech gadgets, but they don't use them.Ted and Marcus arrive to celebrate their engagement with Ted's family this Christmas, and Ted's mom is PUMPED.We also meet two teenagers, Max and Annie. They're best friends working on a gift drive, but when cool girl Stephanie shows up, Max is clearly smitten, which bums Annie out. She talks to her mom, Lucy, about it, who just offers her a candy cane. Lucy runs a bakery, and a hunk named Cole comes in to do some handiwork. Sparks are flying. Lucy's sister, Sylvie, is also coming to spend Christmas with her for the first time in years, and Sylvie is a lot.Josh gets pulled over by Detective Nora Jacobs, whom he recognizes from school. It's clear they never really got along. She gives him a ticket, much to his surprise.Meanwhile, Manny and his wife are so excited that their daughter, Gaby, is home for Christmas! She has big news—she may be getting her own cooking show! But the joy doesn't last long when she finds out her brother, Kevin, is dating their next-door neighbor, Katie, who used to torment Gaby as a kid.Josh complains about the ticket, but his parents tell him that Nora is actually pretty awesome. Her husband passed away, and now she's raising their kid on her own. Josh starts to feel a little bad.Ted and Marcus are talking wedding plans when Ted brings up his grandma as a potential problem. Everyone skirts around the issue until Ted admits: his grandma doesn't know he's gay. Marcus is shocked and doesn't understand why Ted hasn't told her. They're even more surprised to find out she's coming for Christmas, despite planning a spa trip to Florida. When she meets Marcus, Ted introduces him as “his friend.”Clark and his wife, Rebecca, show up at his family's house. Clark's dad is Chuck, the Christmas light guy. Their large family immediately gives them grief for deciding to go vegan this year.Josh goes to pay his ticket and meets Nora's kid, who teaches him how to properly structure his Legos.Gaby and her family head to their annual karaoke festival, which she loves. She's upset when Katie shows up, and things get worse when they both choose the same song to perform. Everyone knows what that means… DUET! They crush it—until Katie accidentally hits Gaby in the face, causing her to fall off the stage. To top it all off, Gaby learns her parents are giving Katie her room because she's too tall for the couch.Later, Josh is in a rush to sign some papers and forgets to put his car in park. It rolls into a fire hydrant. Of course, Nora shows up and tells him this is pretty serious, and he'll have to go to court. Josh pleads, saying he's moving to Australia, so she gives him community service instead.Gaby is looking for a blanket when she finds an engagement ring in Kevin's pocket. She is not happy.Ted's grandma finds the wedding planning album and assumes Marcus is engaged… to Ella, Ted's sister. Now she's staying.Meanwhile, Chuck's wife, Connie, is tired of the family fighting, so she makes everyone sign a no-fighting agreement. Chuck agrees but insists they turn on the Christmas lights first. Predictably, it doesn't go well.
