This week, Mayor Eric Adams came under fire for praising prayer in schools and criticizing the separation of church and state. “When I walk, I walk with God. When I talk, I talk with God. When I put policies in place, I put them in with a God-like approach to them,” Adams said at a breakfast with religious leaders. NY1's Zack Fink, Courtney Gross and Juan Manuel Benítez weighed in on the mayor's remarks. After that, turmoil continues in the FDNY as Commissioner Laura Kavanagh is facing a lawsuit from four top chiefs. The lawsuit claims that Kavanagh unfairly demoted three chief officers and is putting New York City at risk. The team discussed Kavanagh's fraught tenure and what it really means regarding public safety. We want to hear from you, especially what you think of the turmoil within the FDNY. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On Investigating Conspiracy Theories, published by Zvi on February 20, 2023 on LessWrong. Scott Alexander wrote yet more words defending his decision to write two posts totaling 25,000 words about Ivermectin. Then he wrote a second post trying again. More centrally, his first post, of which I very much approve, is defending the most important idea of all: Think for yourself, shmuck! I want to make clear my violent agreement with all of the following. Think for yourself, shmuck! When it seems worthwhile, do your own research. The ones telling you not to ‘do your own research' are probably the baddies. Also applies to the ones telling you to ‘trust us and Trust the Science' and calling you an idiot or racist or calling for you to be censored if you disagree. Baddies or not, those people still are more likely to be more right about any given point than those saying they are wrong or lying to you, unless you have seen them lying or being wrong a lot about closely related things previously. And your own research will often not seem worthwhile if you consider opportunity costs. When people draw wrong conclusions like Ivermectin being effective or that Atlantis used to exist or whatever, telling people that they are idiots or racists for drawing that conclusion is not going to be super effective. Pointing out ‘the other side are conspiracy theorists' or ‘the people who believe this also believe these other terrible things' does not prove the other side is wrong, nor is it going to convince anyone on the other side that they are wrong. If you instead explain and work through the evidence, there is a chance someone might be convinced, that is God's work, you are providing a public service. There are not ‘legitimate' and ‘illegitimate' places to Do Science. You can virtuously Do Science to It, for all values of It and of You. No, we cannot assume that the medical establishment, or any other establishment, will always get such questions right. That is not how any of this works. Even the best possible version of the medical (or other) establishment will sometimes get it wrong, if no one points it out without being dismissed as a conspiracy theorist or racist then the establishment will keep getting it wrong and so will you, and criticism is the only known antidote to error in such situations. I would also add, from Kavanagh's response to Scott in a comment, my disagreement with this particular thing, regarding scuba diving to purported Atlantean ruins: I also don't think I would have the same intuition you have that personally exploring the ruins would be informative. I think that would actually be likely to skew my perspective as it feels like it would deliver potentially inaccurate intuitions and that it would require already having the expertise to properly assess what you are seeing. Actually getting the skills, running experiments, seeing the evidence for yourself? That's all great stuff in my book. It's not cheap to do, but if you care enough to learn to scuba dive, by all means scuba dive and see the primary evidence with your own eyes. It seems crazy to me to think this would not be a helpful thing to do – to me it is the most virtuous thing to do, if you care a lot. Alas, Scott then backtracks a bunch in this second post. He is afraid others will see him saying not to ‘trust the experts' so he wants to reiterate to trust the experts, that reasoning is hard and you probably shouldn't try doing it yourself. Then he says this: To a first approximation, trust experts over your own judgment. If people are trying to confuse you about who the experts are, then to a second approximation trust prestigious people and big institutions, including professors at top colleges, journalists at major newspapers, professional groups with names like the American ______ Association, and the...
This week I'm joined by Jack Kavanagh to talk about resilience, inspiration, grief and change. Jack's a pharmacist and speaker on health & wellbeing and his personal story is simultaneously tragic and uplifting. In 2012 he suffered a life changing spinal cord injury leaving him with just 15% muscle function, and as he shares his story there's a real honesty and vulnerability that comes through as you realise this is a guy has really had to do the work to get to where he is today with his outlook and determination. When we're going through challenging times in our own lives it can sometimes feel like there's a pressure to ‘be resilient', to bounce back or stay positive but that's not always the case. Jack shares the ups and the downs, and how he moved through this unimaginable change in his life and there are many lessons that we can all take from this. As always, when it comes to inspiration it's about your own personal change. I hope that you listen to this podcast and today's episode in particular and are moved to make some small change in your own life, whether that's a behaviour you do or a belief that you hold. Find out more about the work Jack is doing on his website: jack-kavanagh.com Or follow him on LinkedIn, Instagram or Twitter.

It's the second to second last episode of the pod and cup final fever is intertwined with Johnny's playoff sickness in a colourful episode. Our roving Galway reporter took a break from venting his frustration to make the unfamiliar trip to the Aviva Stadium where he interviews Ruaidhri Higgins without impersonating him and finally gets up close and personal with his old mate Damien Duff, who is in reflective mood and content to let sleeping giants lie. We also hear from Luke Byrne and Brandon Kavanagh for a player perspective on Sunday's showpiece, while Dan expands on the new minimum wage, Shels investment and the other big stories of the week in a packed mailbag. In this exciting time for fans of big events, we also talk Dylan (McGlade), (Joe) Kendrick Lamar tickets, and muse over what the Finn Harps show will be like without Ollie Horgan. All this because Future Ticketing, Porterhouse Brewery and Collar and Cuff have stuck with us through thick and thicker. It's not dark yet....but it's getting there!
After 9 years working as a coal miner Adam's health began to deteriorate and he began suffering from anxiety, depression and gut distress. Adam turned his health around by removing processed foods and getting back to nature spending weeks and months living out in the Australian bush. Adam lives in remote far North Queensland for months at a time. He goes hunting barefoot and lives entirely off the land eating wild cows, pigs, turkeys, kangaroos and fish. Adam recently featured on the Discovery Channel TV series Naked and Afraid which challenged him to survive 21 days in the African wilderness with nothing, literally naked. If you're curious about spending more time in nature, hunting and eating wild meats you're going to love this episode! Want to go strict carnivore (meat, salt and water only) for 30 days? In this episode, CSIS Senior Associate Jeffrey L. Sturchio speaks with Matt Kavanagh, Deputy Executive Director for Policy, Advocacy, and Knowledge at UNAIDS, where he is responsible for the organization's work to advance policy, law and political change to end the AIDS pandemic. Matt begins by noting some of the recent advances in the science of HIV prevention and treatment (such as new tools for long-acting HIV prophylaxis), which are causes for optimism in the global response to the HIV pandemic. At the same time, there are worrying trends in new HIV infections due in part to the impact of COVID-19 and economic crises on country investments in HIV programs. Despite these challenges, some countries are still making encouraging progress in fighting HIV/AIDS. As Kavanagh observes, “science doesn't implement itself,” and we need to look to politics and the enabling policy environment to understand why some countries are doing better than others at addressing HIV/AIDS. Countries as diverse as Botswana, Nigeria, and Thailand have responded effectively: by comparing their approaches, we find that a combination of political leadership, partnerships, community engagement, structural interventions, and changes in law and policy help to explain their success. Another important factor in understanding success in addressing HIV/AIDS is the role of vibrant civil society and strong community response to the epidemic. Matt also discusses the importance of ending inequalities to end the AIDS epidemic: we need to know where the gaps in coverage are – by geography, income level, or key populations – and tailor interventions that work to close the gaps. Matt concludes by calling for more investment in global public goods, not only to sustain the AIDS response, but also to be better prepared for future global pandemics. Matthew M. Kavanagh has worked internationally for more than 20 years at the intersection of global health, politics and law and comes to UNAIDS on secondment from Georgetown University, where he holds faculty appointments in international health and law and is a director at the O'Neill Institute for National & Global Health Law.

Adalena wanted to revisit the stories to see if they would hold up, or even conform to her memories of them.
