In this explosive episode of the podcast, host Alex Phillips sits down with veteran journalist Trevor Kavanagh to dissect the mounting chaos under Keir Starmer's Labour government. Kicking off with the shocking U-turn on Angela Rayner's flagship workers' rights bill, where day-one unfair dismissal protections have been scrapped amid business backlash and accusations of manifesto betrayal, the duo explores how this climbdown exposes deepening rifts within Labour's ranks. They then turn to the alarming "brain drain" gripping Britain—record 110,051 asylum claims in the year to September, fueling a surge in hotel housing costs, while over 174,000 young Britons aged 16-34 flee the high-tax, socialist policies for better opportunities abroad. Wrapping up, Phillips and Kavanagh spotlight the international embarrassment as US diplomats, under Trump's directive, are ordered to log migrant-linked crimes in the UK, highlighting policies that critics say favor newcomers at the expense of locals—especially as asylum seekers now account for nearly half of net migration, straining resources and public safety. Tune in for unfiltered analysis on why Britain's borders and economy are buckling under the weight of unchecked inflows. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this heartfelt episode, Michael Kavanagh shares his journey of grief following the tragic loss of his daughter Eleanor in January 2025. He discusses the challenges faced by his family, the importance of community support, and the promise he made to Eleanor to live a life well lived. On Sunday 26th January 2025, 2 year old, Eleanor and her big sister Fiona, went to bed like any other night. Their parents Di and Michael played with them, read them stories, tucked them in and sang a lullaby. Both children went to sleep happy and loved. The following morning, Monday 27th January, Di went into the girls' room to discover the unthinkable had happened. Eleanor had passed away in her sleep. Having had no signs of a worrying illness, and the brightest, happiest, healthiest little girl they had absolutely no warning there was anything to be concerned about. The postmortem would come back some 12 weeks later showing she had viral pneumonia. In this episode which some viewers may find difficult, Michael Kavanagh describes his and Di's experience this year, grief, counselling and undertaking immense challenges in memory of Eleanor. Di has already completed her cycle from London to Paris in extreme conditions. Michael will be leaving their new home in Oxfordshire on Saturday 25th October, and within 24 hours he will run (and walk) to Eleanor's grave 80 miles away in Shropshire. Three marathons, back-to-back. Off road. Through the night.
Send us a textIf you've ever felt awkward saying no - to a client, a colleague, or even a friend, this episode will be a relief. I'm joined by communication specialist Colleen Kavanagh, who unpacks how to deliver a firm no without triggering defensiveness, people-pleasing, or creating more work for yourself. We dig into “can-do” language - a practical way of flipping the conversation from roadblocks to options. Instead of the reflex combo of “Unfortunately… I'm sorry… I can't… due to…”, Colleen shows how to lead with what I can do, then position the boundary with confidence. The result is less pushback, a calmer tone, and stronger trust.Colleen walks through live reframes you can use today: returning sale items, rescheduling requests, and that dreaded airline-style announcement. We also talk about when empathy is essential (and when it isn't), how to edit an email so it lands better, and why “customers” include your internal stakeholders too. Colleen shares a council case study where tightening everyday language lifted Net Promoter Score by 75% across 1,600 surveys - proof this isn't fluffy, it's commercial. If you lead a team, handle clients, work cross-functionally, or simply want to protect your time without feeling guilty, this one's for you.Key takeaways:People are more interested in what I can do than what I can't. When I lead with options and next steps, the “no” lands as professional and helpful.Ditch trigger words. “Unfortunately”, “I'm sorry” “I can't” “due to” spike emotion and invite arguments. They're habitual, not helpful.Reframe in a single move. Put the positive offer first, then the boundary: “I can offer Wednesday 8:30–10:30 or Thursday afternoon. I'm not available Wednesday midday due to a prior commitment.”Use empathy when the person needs to feel seen. Mirror back the facts and pressure points before you offer the path forward. Trust is built on reliability. If I'm starting emails with “Sorry for the delay…”, I've got a reliability opportunity. Communicate work-in-progress updates before people need to chase.Internal audiences are customers too. Clear, can-do language with colleagues improves influence and personal brand just as much as it does with clients.Connect with ColleenLinkedIn WebsiteDOWNLOAD MY CONTENT PLANNER - https://becchappell.com.au/content-planner/Instagram @bec_chappellLinkedIn – Bec Chappell If you're ready to work together, I'm ready to work with you and your team. How to work with me:1. Nigel's guest today is Anthony Kavanagh, better known as pop star Kavana. Kavana was one of the most fresh faced, wholesome teen pop stars in the late 90s with songs like I Can Make You Feel Good and MFEO hitting the top 10 and making him hugely successful worldwide and the 'butter-wouldn't-melt' cover star of every pop magazine out there. But Anthony knew he was gay, a fact he hid from virtually everyone because of shame. He also became addicted to alcohol and drugs in order to function. It was an addiction that would take everything he had once wished for away from him. His brilliant book, Pop Scars, is a memoir about fame, addiction and the dark side of 90s pop. This series is a celebration of a beautiful queer community; people of all ages, people who have had to tread their own path to live their real truth, who have fought with their emotions and emerged victorious, who inspire, who aspire and always entertain. Paddy Kavanagh and Dave McMillan do have experience of several of the themes we discuss this week; confident attackers, the psychology of European ties and the ingredients that are needed to challenge for a title. We talk Bohs form, Sligo Rovers v Derry implications and the second leg task facing Shelbourne and St Patrick's Athletic before there's a slight diversion towards angry Falkirk fans and Florent Malouda's Turkish entourage. Listener Menopause Exercise Question: Are You Exercising Too Much, Too Little, or Just Right?” Recently, a listener asked a menopause exercise question, "I'm doing strength training three times a week for 30 minutes. Is that too much? If you have wondered, or wonder what is enough, too much or the Goldilocks for you, this is for you. Based on a study in Ireland called Menowell (not to be confused with the bars), almost 70% of us get our information from friends and 50% get information from social media. So, beware. Even researchers right now are spending a lot of time and energy getting eyeballs and making shocking statements. Instead of merely sharing the facts, they're being as inflammatory as the influencers they claim not to be. Quick Overview: Menopause can bring bone loss, muscle loss, metabolic changes, mood shifts & symptoms like hot flashes and sleep troubles. Promise: By the end, you'll know how to calibrate exercise for maximum benefit and minimal burnout, even if you're not experiencing any of these. Why exercise is non-negotiable? Exercise is medicine. Muscle is medicine and an endocrine organ. Muscle is HRT if you allow it to be. Like any other medicine, the right dose and timing are crucial. How much is too little? I could answer in a very generic way: Minimum WHO/HHS guidelines: 150 min moderate aerobic + 2 strength sessions weekly Under 150 min weekly leads to missed benefits like bone density maintenance and cardiometabolic protection This is not a generic podcast and you're not a generic woman. So, let's answer with the uniqueness you deserve. Whether you're exercising too little or too much your body leaves both objective and subjective data. Red flags of Undertraining and Overtraining: Persistent fatigue Ongoing symptoms Plateau in strength/mood/weight. More Answers to Your Menopause Exercise Questions When exercise becomes too much: Excessive high-intensity sessions >3× weekly without recovery ups injury risk—especially for connective tissue for women in midlife. Overtraining stress can aggravate symptoms, disturb sleep, mood, and adrenal health, appetite/cravings and libido. Finding the sweet spot: Measure muscle and body fat (See Resources for my smart scale picks.) Measure waist girth Measure bone density through Dexa scan Do-It-Yourself checklist: Track energy, sleep, mood, focus, libido, digestion, elimination (See Resources for Flipping50 Progress Tracker) Between your objective and subjective measures, are you getting what you want?
