This is the continuation of our two-part series on fly fishing for sea-run coastal cutthroat trout. For more information on classes, guide trips, and cutthroat, check out our website. gigharborflyshop.com
Sea-run cutthroats are coastal cutthroat trout that live some or most of their lives in saltwater. They feed nearshore along the beaches of Puget Sound and are accessible to fly anglers from the shore. We hope this podcast gives you a great introduction to fishing in Puget Sound. If you're ready for the deep-dive, consider taking our saltwater clinic. We also guide for cutthroat trout walking the beach as well as from our fleet of pedal-drive Hobie fishing kayaks. For information on guided trips, click here.
Completely brand new to fly fishing?! That's great! We love to teach anglers and help them be successful on the water. If you are absolutely brand new to fly fishing, we hope this episode gets you started down the right path. If you are in our Puget Sound area, consider joining us for one of our classes. We'd love to hear from you. You can contact us through our website or social media. gigharborflyshop.com
For those of you that have been in the shop, you probably know David. He's worked for us for a while. David and his wife are moving back to Alaska but before they left they went on a three month adventure across the US, down through the south to Florida and then up through Montana on a fishing adventure. Before loading up on the ferry to AK I got the chance to meet up with David and fish one last time. After hearing a couple quick stories of their trip, I knew many of you would want to hear them too. So here's a conversation with David about their trip. Follow David on social. On Instagram he's https://www.instagram.com/david_gillitzer/
In October I headed to Montana to host our annual back to back trips on the Missouri River. On the last day of the trip for the first group, and the first day of the trip for the second group, I go fish with Mark. We mic'd up in the boat and recorded a podcast episode while fishing! We talk about trout fishing, the Missouri River, the ready position and other tactics for anglers, stories, guiding, how Covid-19 has affected our businesses, travel, and a whole lot more. I even hooked a couple fish while we talked to! Here's my favorite quote from Mark on this episode: “That’s how a lot of guides became fishing guides, their friends were so bad at rowing they couldn’t even stand to be with them when their friends were rowing so they always rowed. Consequently they got better at rowing, and then failed at the rest of life, and became fishing guides.”
We're back with another season of the Gig Harbor Fly Cast. We have some fun stuff coming up and a lot planned for you!
Here's the continuation of our conversation with Brian Bennett from Moldy Chum. We tell some fishing stories, talk about the fly fishing industry, and talk some Moldy Chum!
On this episode of the Gig Harbor Fly Cast, I sit down with the brains behind Moldy Chum, Brian Bennett, to talk about the origins of Moldy Chum, how he got into fly fishing, and how to get involved in conservation issues.
With phase 2 coming soon we are working to get the shop ready for reopening. Guiding has opened back up but with restrictions. In this episode we give a fishing report and talk about all of the changes that are going on during the reopening phase.
George and I continue our conversation and talk about his panther, euro nymphing, bass fishing, as well as new stuff! Far Bank just released some new products: the new Sage Sonic rod, a specialized ESN Sage reel, as well as some items from Redington.
Last week I hosted a Zoom get together to talk about cutthroat fishing in Puget Sound. We had over 50 people join in! I knew several of you weren't able to make it so I recorded the audio to make that available to you. I hope this is helpful to you out on the water!
In this episode of the Gig Harbor Fly Cast we talk with George Cook about growing up around fly fishing, the Henry's Fork, spey casting in the early days, sink tips, and more.
Over the past decade, I've gotten the chance to get to know Mark. His fly shop provides top service and we've enjoyed hosting trips with them every fall. If you'd like to know more about our trips to the Mighty Mo', check out our website. http://gigharborflyshop.com/travel/montanas-missouri-river
*this was obviously filmed a bit ago before no-fishing rules and stay at home orders were in place. Although we believe fly fishing to be the original social distancing, we also would prefer everyone to stay safe and go fish when the authorities say it is safe to do so. We have been hosting trips to Montana with Headhunters Fly Shop for nearly a decade and have developed a great relationship with Mark and his crew. Headhunters is not just a premier fly shop on the Missouri River, it's considered one of the premier operations in the country. In this podcast episode, Mark and I have some good laughs and talk about how he got into fly fishing, how he got started on the Missouri, and more. http://gigharborflyshop.com/travel/montanas-missouri-river/
I recently got to spend a few days with Sandflea in Guatemala fishing for billfish and then we headed to his hometown in Mexico for a few days of tarpon fishing. He is just a wonderful guy to spend a week with and I thought it would be a lot of fun for you to get to know him a little bit. In this episode, we talk about his background in Holbox, his passion for fishing, as well as just some fun talk about fishing in general.
I get asked fairly often what is the difference between conventional tackle and fly fishing. I've done quite a bit of both, and I think it comes down to where each places their priority on efficiency vs aesthetics. I'm not saying one is better than the other, I'm just saying that they have different values, goals, and priorities.
This interview is also available on YouTube https://youtu.be/ctF9bmdwsdw In podcast episode #3 I interview Jon Covich. Jon has been really involved in helping anglers explore Cuba and has done over twenty trips to the island. We love going to Cuba too and it was a blast telling stories! gigharborflyshop.com/travel/cuba
This interview is also available on YouTube https://youtu.be/vLKxryNq4Fc In podcast episode #2, I interview Jon Covich. Jon is a long time industry professional and manufacturer rep. He has traveled extensively and partners with Flywater Travel to help anglers explore some of the coolest fly fishing destinations on the planet. gigharborflyshop.com/travel
Thanks for checking our our first podcast episode! In this episode, I talk about who we are, how we hope to help you, and tackle the question "what do you fish for around here?" A question we get asked all the time. We have several more episodes planned and will have some special guests on the show as well. For the interview episodes we will also have them on video on our YouTube channel youtube.com/gigharborfly
