Join us as we engage in a thought-provoking conversation with Stacey Womack, the visionary founder and executive director of Abuse Recovery Ministry and Services (ARMS). Stacey shares her invaluable insights into domestic violence intervention programs, shedding light on how these initiatives aim to help individuals, primarily men, recognize and change abusive behaviors by altering their underlying belief systems. We address prevalent misconceptions about abusers, emphasizing that domestic violence cuts across socioeconomic, racial, and religious lines. Stacey also outlines the various pathways individuals take to enter these programs, noting that a significant portion are court-ordered, while others are motivated by family or community encouragement. Our discussion underscores the importance of accountability and prioritizing victim safety within these interventions, revealing the complexities of fostering change in individuals who may not initially see themselves as the problem.Additionally, we explore the dynamics of male-female co-facilitation in domestic violence programs, particularly in Oregon, highlighting the benefits of presenting both masculine and feminine perspectives in therapeutic settings. By modeling healthy relationships and shared power, facilitators provide participants with a balanced partnership example. Our conversation delves into the challenges and indicators of progress among group members, stressing the importance of accountability and recognizing personal choices in behavior. Stacey explains the structure and duration of these programs, which typically last around 48 weeks, with ongoing aftercare support available. We also touch on the potential setbacks some individuals face post-program and celebrate the rewarding stories of those who successfully integrate the lessons learned into new, healthier relationships. Listen in as we uncover the impactful work being done to transform lives and foster lasting change.

Andrew discusses how his organisation serves 25,000 learners across seven colleges with a purpose-driven approach of "changing lives through learning." He reveals key leadership strategies including maintaining local college identities while leveraging shared resources, implementing employee engagement initiatives like wellness days and recognition programmes, and addressing the challenges of chronic underfunding in further education. Andrew emphasises the importance of holistic student support, building resilient leadership through self-care and boundaries, recruiting for attitude over skills, and perhaps most significantly, establishing "kindness as a superpower" as a core organisational value. This week Nicola and Di chat with 2 incredibly inspiring women, Nici Andronicus and Tania Taylor-Frost, whose stories will give you a huge boost. Both of these women do incredible work for the charity Be Centre, which changes the lives of children through play therapy. Nici is a former elite athlete, who represented Australia in triathlon and modern pentathlon. She competed in 10 world championships and over 90 international events, becoming world no. 2 in 1997 and a three-time national triathlon champion. Not only that, Nici is a mother of 5, and does a lot of incredible work for different charities. Tania is the CEO of the Be Centre, helping children navigate trauma and big emotions through play therapy and early support. She’s also the director of the Sydney Skinny, a passionate force for children’s mental health and a fierce advocate for early intervention. Tania is also a proud mum of 2. In this conversation you’ll hear Nici’s powerful story of what it was like when her husband was diagnosed with brain cancer when she was 20 weeks pregnant with their 5th child. Nici was able to draw on the incredible resilience and strong mindset that she developed in her career as an elite athlete, to help her get through what was arguably the biggest challenge of her life. Nici shares openly and vulnerably about what it was like for her family, and how her youngest child was deeply affected and needed the support of the Be Centre to be able to process the trauma and difficult emotions that he was going through. For people addicted to fentanyl, the desire to quit is often overshadowed by the fear of withdrawal. Incredible nerve pain, diarrhea, chills, vomiting. It’s been likened to the worst flu you’ve ever experienced. Buprenorphine, the medication often used to aid in easing addiction, can trigger withdrawal symptoms, making it tough for patients to continue treatment. Here in Seattle, Downtown Emergency Service Center, or DESC, has been trying a new method of administering buprenorphine to ease treatment and curb cravings -- and it’s showing some promising results. Guests: Jeremy Hoog, senior nurse manager at DESC's Opioid Recovery and Care Access. Carson Bell is a care navigator at DESC.
