This week's episode, I talk about the attraction of the Mayfly that brings anglers together. The experiences and the feelings the hatch gives us. A magical time of year that stirs so much anticipation and excitement, at this spiritual time for us, fly fishermen. The Corrib this year is seeing the biggest hatch in a very long time.... go and get your doctor's paper and get out on the lake!
As the Mayfly season gets underway. Fisheries scientist, Ken Whelan, joined Sheila O'Callaghan along the banks of the Blackwater River near Virginia in Co Cavan, and Dr Samuel Fabian from the University of Oxford and his colleagues from Imperial College London reveals the science behind the Mayfly's dance in newly published research.
Mayfly season is almost upon us, but why do they do the very unusual ‘mayfly dance'? Now, researchers think they have found the answer.Joining Seán to discuss is Sam Fabian, an Entomologist with Imperial College London…

Have you ever fished in a hatch that feels like the stories we hear, usually from the old-timers, about the days when fish ate from a never-ending buffet of bugs? Where, if you're in the right place at the right time, you can catch fish until your arms fall off? I've had that opportunity once - and this is the story of the greatest mayfly hatch I've ever seen. In this week's thought-provoking conversation, host of The New P&L, Paul, sits down with Raj Heyer, a multi-award-winning CEO, founder of Tiny Box Academy and author of the forthcoming book Every Voice Matters: Social Leadership for Inclusive Innovation, for a wide-ranging discussion on what leadership truly means in an age of AI, noise and rapid change.Raj challenges the traditional hierarchy of leadership, arguing that real influence belongs with those closest to the insight, not the highest on the org chart. From the democratisation of expertise to the dangers of AI adoption without human context, this episode explores why organisations that invest in people whilst divesting in diversity programmes may be building on dangerously shallow foundations.Paul and Raj examine how trust, transparency and values-aligned leadership create the psychological safety that unlocks creativity, collaboration and genuine innovation; drawing on powerful real-world examples.Three Key Takeaways+ Lead from expertise, not hierarchy: the personclosest to the insight, not the highest in rank, should lead the conversation.+ Values without visibility are just wallpaper: leaders must know what they stand for and say it out loud, both internally and externally.+ Start with self-awareness: understanding your own values, preferences and gaps is the foundation of every form of effective leadership. To connect with Raj, go to: https://www.rajhayer.com To learn more about Raj and the work she does: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rajhayer/To pre-order Every Voice Matters, go to: https://bit.ly/4rSewd2Want to join us in a movement for a The New P&L for business? Join me as we explore the fascinating world of early season olive hatches with expert fly fisherman Blake Katchur [35:42] of Anglers All in Denver. No matter where you fish, you'll find this hatch any time from early March to early June. Discover effective tactics, fly patterns, and timing tips to enhance your fishing success during this prolific hatch. In the Fly Box this week, we have these questions and more: Can I use my 7-weight fiberglass rod for bonefish in Belize? Why can I catch brook trout in smaller streams during the winter but not in a bigger river? If I leave off the trailing hook in articulated flies, how do I compensate for the lack of weight? Will it affect the swimming action of my flies? For Alaska silver salmon and big rainbows, should I get a 9-foot or 10-foot 8-weight Helios rod? And should I pick Helios D or F? Do the scents from resins and glues put off the fish? Is there anything that can cover up these scents? Are wings on dry flies absolutely necessary? Where did we get the "X" system we use for leader and tippet diameters? What do you have on your fly-tying bench that you can't do without?

Insects play a critical role in rivers, lakes, and streams, acting as a vital food source for many animals and maintaining the health of these freshwater ecosystems. A few of these insects include: mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies. The bad news? They are in decline. The good news? There is something we can do about it. This is a new topic for us and one that we are excited to explore.Joining us to dive into the aquatic world are Jackson Birrell and James Frakes, co-founders of the Salmonfly Project, which is based here in Missoula, Montana and aims to conserve stream insects. Jackson is Executive Director of the Salmonfly Project and is a PhD graduate from the University of Montana, where he studied the factors that shape aquatic insect distributions and the causes of salmonfly declines across the Rockies. James is the Salmonfly Project's Chief Operations Officer and also a graduate from the University of Montana where he received his Master's degree in Aquatic Ecology. As an avid fly fisher, he is passionate about continuing his research on insect decline and developing projects to save the hatches he knows and loves.---Photo Credit: Jenny WalkerThank you for listening! We're nearly into June and the mayfly is finally petering out. It's hard to believe that it began at Easter time on Corrib, whilst recently, Sheelin has been described as being ‘polluted with fly' where fly anglers have been left with pretty much only suntans this year. So, this week, to find out more, joining us for our annual mayfly season review is Jackie Mahon, fly tyer and guide on Lough Arrow, and Ronan McWilliams, who embarked on a month long road trip taking in Corrib, Arrow and Sheelin. But all did not go to plan as you'll find out in the episode. My guest this week is Mike Tayloe [33:07], who is a fishing guide, EMT, and wilderness medicine trainer. Tayloe (he prefers this to Mike) has trained many Orvis-endorsed guides and lodges on emergencies that you'll encounter on the water. Basically, they're the same emergencies you'll find at home but without the ability to get a rescue squad or ambulance quickly. The bad news is that we can't give you training on wilderness medicine on a podcast. The good news is that Tayloe will tell us how to get training for these emergencies (an online course is not the recommended way to go) and how to put together your own first aid kit so that you are prepared to deal with common medical problems. He goes into great detail on what to include in your kit, and recommends places to either get a complete pre-made kit or where to buy the right components—and the best course is not to buy a cheap kit in a big box store. This podcast, with proper training and a good kit, could save your life or that of a fishing buddy. In the Fly Box this week, we have a number of questions that may answer questions you have had, such as: When should I use split shot as an "in-line" rig as opposed to the drop shot method? Is it better to use fewer big split shot or a number of smaller ones? What can I do with egg yarn other than make egg flies? Mayfly nymphs look flat. Why don't we use more flies with a flattened shape? Should I cast my streamers upstream, across-stream, or quartering down and swinging? Where should I look for striped bass along a marshy shoreline? How important is color on emerger flies. Most of the patterns I see imitate the color of the duns but shouldn't we be more concerned with the color of the nymph? Why are high-end fly rods more expensive than high-end conventional rods? When tying flies, should I tie every size in the right range or should I skip sizes?

Time. Tick tock. We live only a tiny fraction of time that our planet has been around for. Even humanity itself is very young. But life span is a really relative term: there are creatures on our planet that live much shorter lives than us humans, and those who outlive all of us by far… while some are close to immortality. See for yourself. Mayfly has the shortest lifespan on Earth — 24 hours or less. Greenland shark lives over 270 years. It's the longest-living vertebrate. But there are creatures who live over 2,000 years or even... forever! Yup, one of them is biologically immortal. It can go back to being polyp and grow up again infinitely... Joining us on this week's show is Paul Molloy from Oughterard whose family has been steeped in Irish fly fishing for generations living and working by the shore of Lough Corrib. And as a kid growing up, Paul tells us of the mayfly market where they would be selling mayflies by the dozen and then as he got older how he got more and more into the fly tying side of things becoming an All Ireland Youths champion. It's time for our second and final mayfly update from around the country and this week we're hearing how Lough Sheelin and Lough Arrow fared with Eamonn Ross and Jackie Mahon. Eamonn explains how the fishing was fantastic the first week the mayfly was up with some incredible fish being caught, but it's been tougher since then. Meanwhile on Arrow, Jackie describes it as patchy, and similar to many other places, if you were able to hit it at the right time, the fishing could be top drawer, but outside of the windows it was proving to be much harder. We've our first update of the mayfly season for this week's show and Mike Keady joins us to tell us how Corrib has been fishing. The weather has been unsettled and cold which hasn't helped things, Mike tells us, but he does expect it to pick up for the next 1-2 weeks so if you have the opportunity do try and make the most of it before it finishes up on Corrib. On Derg, Shane Creamer was out fishing for the week but he did send in an update with word that it has been very slow. However, there have been some bumper days when winds were light and some very good fish caught in the 4-6lb bracket on dries. If you fish for walleyes (bass, trout, pike, perch, even muskies) you won't believe what you're going to learn from biologist, Bev Ritchie, who discovered that the magnificent hexigenia limbata hatch so heavily in even numbered years - like this year — that the walleyes go berserk devouring them. There are as many as 120 mayfly nymphs crawling around every square metre or yard of lake bottom and the fish pounce on them and eat them almost exclusively when they're about to hatch. Which is any day now. It is why the walleye bite often slows down when the mayflies start hatching, but we're going to tell you how you can turn this into the most exciting walleye fishing of the season. You're not going to want to miss this episode.
...in which we explore the industrial and social history of Barrow-in-Furness in the company of former mayor John Murphy and artist Maddi Nicholson. Overlooking Walney Channel and distant Black Combe, we delve into the Furness peninsula's deep past, when monks arrived in the secluded 'valley of the deadly nightshade'. We proceed to the discovery of iron ore, and Barrow's subsequent overnight transformation, from backwater farming hamlet into 'the Chicago of England'. In a whistle-stop tour of the town, we discuss the leaning tower of its remarkable town hall, the daily toil of workers in 'the Shed', the 'boilermaker's whisper' and the 'hellfires' that blazed above molten slag. Entering the war years, we consider Barrow's role in re-arming the nation, the realities of the Barrow Blitz and the construction of Barnes Wallis' ill-fated dirigible ‘Mayfly' – that did not fly. Finally, on a tour of the fabulous space at Art Gene, we learn about the social history of the town – through shops, hairdressing, meat pies and a moose.– before celebrating the forgotten women of Barrow and Walney, including Peggy Braithwaite, Britain's only woman lighthouse keeper and a mean shot with a rifle. For more information about the Re:discover Barrow Exhibition see art-gene.co.uk/place-rediscover-barrow-exhibition/ You can find out more about Maddi at art-gene.co.uk/artists-and-residences/maddi-nicholson/ and Art Gene generally at art-gene.co.uk
Discover the ephemeral beauty of mayflies and the pressing need to conserve our precious wetlands with Dr. Luke Jacobus, whose boundless enthusiasm for Ephemeroptera and Indiana's wetland ecosystems shines brightly in our latest conversation. As we wander through his journey from a curious child enthralled by the natural world to a professor and researcher safeguarding the state's environmental heritage, you'll be captivated by tales from the field and the dedication required to study these fleeting creatures. Dr. Jacobus's experiences underscore the importance of understanding and protecting the diverse life that dwells within our own backyards, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all species, no matter how minute. The story of Indiana's wetlands is a poignant one, marked by loss yet filled with hope. We traverse through the history of altered landscapes, from the draining of Beaver Lake to the reshaping of the Kankakee River, shedding light on the struggle to preserve the remnants of these ecosystems. Dr. Jacobus highlights the critical roles wetlands play—beyond hosting biodiversity, they offer essential services such as water purification and flood control. Our discussion extends to the broader challenges of freshwater conservation and the significance of engaging stakeholders in a united effort to protect these environments for future generations.

In this episode we talk to Andre Davis. Andre is an avid outdoorsman who finds peace and restoration in the demonstrative power of God's nature. He is a proud big brother, uncle, son and husband. Andre' has spent a lifetime outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, building, playing music and teaching. Married to a sixth grade teacher, his household is full of the desire to teach and lead our youth well, with the joyful expectation of watching them become better than ourselves. Andre' has a non-profit called Skillz and Gills where kids are taught the basics of fly fishing, how to set up a rig, fly casting, all about waterways, ecosystems, conservation, and fish handling. He's a staple in the Alabama fly fishing community, a mentor of the Mayfly Project, an avid fly tier, and friend of the show. Many of you may be surprised to know that Andre is also an excellent writer and storyteller. We've had the privilege of reading several of his personal essays and we talk about those on the show. We had Andre on once before at the international fly fishing film festival at Cahaba Brewery last year, but we wanted to extend our conversation with him this year. In this week's episode, we sit down with Captain Robin Simms, who just received her certification to operate 150 foot vessels. Robin is a longtime friend of the show and vital member of the Alabama flyfishing community. We previously had Robin on the show in a mini episode at the international fly fishing film festival at Cahaba brewery last year. We go into more depth with Robin in this episode and discuss Alabama women on the fly, her guide services, and a host of other topics centered around a life lived on the water… Including a harrowing story from her time in Alaska involving a very little boat on very big waves. We absolutely love what Robin brings to this episode, as well as what she brings to the outdoor community with her innovative approach to getting new people on the water. We hope you enjoy! “Hoots and derision, which did not worry me at all,” Lilian Bland wrote, describing her visit to an airshow in Blackpool, England in 1909. She'd been telling everyone there that she intended to build and fly her own airplane. They were unimpressed. Lilian was undeterred. She built a DIY plane of bamboo, wood, and fabric, with a bicycle handlebar for steering and an engine she carried from England back to her home in Ireland. But would the Mayfly, as she called it, fly?
Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/561 Presented By: TroutRoutes, Togens Fly Shop Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Growing up with a fishing rod in my hand and the sprawling lakes of Kamloops, BC, as my backyard, I know the serene joy of fly fishing runs deep. Stanton, an old friend and seasoned angler, joins us to share his journey from humble beginnings to the evolution of his craft amidst the myriad challenges and triumphs of fly fishing. We wade through the currents of time, recounting the days of learning the ropes with simple gear and the familial bonds that are intertwined with the pull of the line and the dance of the fly. Stanton's narrative is a blend of personal reflection and a wider lens on the sport's progress, discussing how techniques like chironomid fishing took root and flourished in our local waters, thanks to innovators like his brother Patrick. As our lines cast further into the conversation, Stanton opens up about his hiatus from angling following his daughter's birth—a relatable pause for any parent—and his subsequent reeling back into the competitive sphere. Our chat navigates the shifts in fish populations, the integration of new fishing strategies, and Stanton's aspirations of representing Canada in national competitions. With a nod to the mark left by mentors such as Brian Chan and Phil Rowley, we recognize the intricate tapestry of competitive fishing, its history, and the fresh wave of talent setting their sights on the legacy of the sport. Tying it all together, Stanton brings us shore-side to discuss the vibrant world of fishing lakes and the lure of saltwater challenges. He skillfully guides us through the art of fly tying, revealing innovative techniques that give anglers the edge across seasons. That's exactly what we did with Joe from Anglers Coffee, stirring up a conversation as hearty as their newest Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout coffee blends. As we took a virtual tour of Anglers Coffee's eventful year, Joe spilled the beans on the dynamics between specialty Arabica and robust Robusta, and the launch of their high-octane Stimulator blend. We also got the inside scoop on their latest splash at the Virginia Fly Fishing and Wine Festival and the buzz around the upcoming show in Edison, New Jersey.
