    A few weeks ago, I found myself driving home late after a long day of hauling gear to our new property — hungry, tired, and joking with Kathy that if we were a “normal” family, we'd just pull into a McDonald's drive-thru. Of course, we didn't, but that comment stuck with me. Could there be a future where eating at McDonald's wouldn't feel like poisoning your body? It sounds absurd, but after hearing that McDonald's plans to invest $200 million into regenerative agriculture, I'm not so sure anymore. That idea — the possibility of fast-food giants shifting toward something genuinely sustainable — gives me a sliver of hope. Because most days, it's hard not to feel discouraged. We've learned that frogs in local waterways are showing calcification from chemical exposure, that ibuprofen and microplastics are showing up in tap water, and that airborne microplastics now drift over the Alps. Even the air on mountaintops isn't clean anymore. When you start connecting those dots, it's easy to think we're too far gone.  But then you see small signs of progress: restaurants switching from seed oils to tallow, or major brands talking seriously about soil health, and you realize the tide might actually be turning. Europe tends to rely on top-down regulation to drive change, but here in the U.S., progress starts with individual choices. Businesses respond to demand. Every dollar we spend is a vote for the kind of food system we want. If enough people ask for better meat, for tallow-fried food, for products made without synthetic inputs, the market will adjust. That's already happening in small pockets, and it's proof that change doesn't have to come from policy — it can come from us. We didn't end up at McDonald's that night; we stopped at a barbecue joint that fries in tallow instead of seed oils. It wasn't perfect food, but it was progress (and worth supporting). In this episode, Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher break down the world of myokines--the powerful messengers released during exercise that can fight disease, sharpen your brain, and even slow aging. Expect to learn how strength training floods your body with health-boosting signals, why myokines are called “magic,” and ways strength protects both your lifespan and healthspan. Dr. Fisher starts by describing why we need to think of muscle differently: It's not just tissue that moves your body, it's a chemical messenger system that sends positive signals all over the body.  Amy and Dr. Fisher cover why exercise is medicine. Each contraction releases myokines that calm inflammation, boost immunity, and even protect against cancer and neurological decline.  For decades, scientists knew muscles released “something,” but the name myokines wasn't coined until 2003.     The best leaders are the ones that can hold space for both—care personally and challenge directly. Work never happens in a vacuum. Field calls, customer pressure, travel, and deadlines compound the very real mental load carried by water professionals. In this conversation, Dr. Andy Melton, a professional counselor and executive coach at  www.andymelton.com—shares clear, practical ways leaders and teams can recognize mental health warning signs, set the right boundaries, and respond with care without stepping outside their role.  Care Personally, Challenge Directly—Inside Clear Boundaries Managers aren't neutral parties, and that matters. Andy explains the built-in conflict of interest when a supervisor probes too deeply into an employee's personal struggles. You still need to check in—but do it in role: use open-ended, performance-anchored questions (“What's been challenging for you lately?”), document observations, and offer resources instead of diagnoses. He also highlights Kim Scott's “Radical Candor” frame—care personally and challenge directly—as a durable leadership posture for tough conversations.   Spotting Decline Early—Behavioral, Cognitive, Physical  Before missed KPIs and callbacks spike, there are tells: sudden drops in productivity, withdrawal, irritability, rising absence/tardiness, markedly negative self-talk, and physical complaints (fatigue, headaches, stomach issues). Andy shares a simple “dashboard” self-check—sleep and eating patterns—plus trackable 1–10 scales for stress, energy, engagement, and mood stability to catch trends early.  When It's Serious—Safe Paths and Resources  Anonymous surveys can surface urgent risks—including suicidality. Andy outlines responsible next steps: widen communication, invite follow-ups, and immediately involve a mental health professional or crisis resources.     When most people think about blood pressure, they think about a once-a-year reading at a doctor's office. But one measurement on one day doesn't tell you much about your cardiovascular health. Just like a single fasting glucose number doesn't reveal your metabolic state, a one-off blood pressure check is largely meaningless. Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day based on stress, sleep, exercise, hydration, and countless other factors. And even more important: the cuff on your arm measures brachial pressure — not the central pressure your heart and organs actually experience. That distinction matters. The true risk isn't just the number on a cuff, it's how elastic your arteries are and how much pressure your aorta is under. Elastic vessels absorb the shock of each heartbeat, while stiff ones reflect it back toward the heart and raise central pressure. That's why arterial stiffness is such a strong predictor of cardiovascular risk, especially as we age or when diet and lifestyle accelerate inflammation and plaque buildup. In this episode, I explain how modern devices can go beyond a simple systolic/diastolic reading. Using pulse wave analysis, they can estimate central blood pressure, pulse pressure, augmentation pressure, augmentation index, and oxygen supply-demand balance in the heart muscle. I share some of my own readings — including cases where a cuff reading looked “high” but the deeper markers showed excellent elasticity and low central pressure. It's a reminder that context matters far more than one isolated number. The takeaway is clear: don't let a single reading define your health. Look at patterns over time. Pay attention to central pressure and vessel elasticity. And above all, address the lifestyle drivers that really move the needle — diet, sleep, movement, stress, and balancing electrolytes like sodium and potassium.
