Question 1: What Metrics Should We Track for Exercising Success? Why BMI isn't the best measure of success. Dr. Fisher explains that BMI is just height and weight—it doesn't account for muscle mass. That's why a “high” BMI might actually mean you're stronger and healthier, not overweight. Dr. Fisher emphasizes that real progress comes from strength training, eating whole foods, and daily movement. When you focus on what you can control, the number on the scale becomes less important. Dr. Fisher reveals how bioelectrical impedance analysis goes beyond weight to measure fat mass and lean muscle. This gives a far clearer picture of your health than BMI or a simple scale ever could. Sally Littlefield is a national speaker and mental health advocate dedicated to changing how the world understands schizophrenia. After experiencing a 10-month long psychotic episode that led to a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, she returned to work in communications and fundraising roles at three mental health nonprofits. This professional experience deepened her insight into trauma, stigma, and systemic barriers faced by people with serious mental illnesses.  Sally's writing has appeared in Slate, STAT News, and Psychology Today, and she has been featured in national media such as the Associated Press and the television network A+E. Now a full-time advocate, she offers talks and trainings focused on stigma reduction, recovery, and mental health crisis de-escalation. Her mission is to promote empathy, dignity, and understanding for people with schizophrenia.     What do the TV and film characters Don Draper (Mad Men), James Bond, Miranda Priestly (The Devil Wears Prada), and Rick Blaine (Casablanca) have in common? Each is a fairly good illustration of the Avoidant-Dismissive Attachment Style portrayed in film.In the last episode, I discussed how our experiences with caregivers during our first three years of life may continue to impact our ability to regulate emotions and form beliefs about ourselves and others. More deeply, I address how attachment shapes our neurophysiology - specifically our right and left hemisphere differentiation, our limbic system (“lizard brain”) and our autonomic nervous system.In this episode, I will focus more closely on one end of the attachment spectrum - the avoidant-dismissive attachment style. I'll discuss:* How, in the early research, attachment was measured in toddlers and adults* How avoidant-dismissive attachment appears to develop* What it looks like in relationships* Personality Disorders that, if present, align with this type of attachment style* Similarities with undermethylation and how avoidant-dismissive attachment style may relate to undermethylation* The role of psychotherapy, group work, and supportive relationships in healing* Other tools, practices, and choices that can support healing.* How awareness of these patterns can transform not only personal well-being but also parenting and family dynamics across generationsOne theme I return to often is that growth is always possible. While avoidant attachment may develop early in life, it does not define a person forever.     I recently spent a week in Austria, bouncing between my grandparents' farmhouse and the alpine trails I grew up on. And it hit me how stark the contrast is between the foundation they built and the environment kids are growing up in today.  My grandparents are 92 and 93, still living on their own. They had decades of clean food, pure alpine water, long days outside and zero WiFi. And then, over the last 10-20 years, an Americanized creep of seed oils, ultra-processed snacks and glyphosate started showing up in force.  Fortunately, for my grandparents, their health trajectory was already set. But the sad reality is that today's Austria looks a lot more like the U.S. than the one I left in 2007. You see it in the soda cases and packaged snacks; in childhood obesity, which simply wasn't common when I was a kid; and in the push for convenience over quality.  On paper, the cardiovascular stats are surprising, with heart issues accounting for about a third of Austrian deaths vs roughly a fifth in the U.S. But context matters. Life expectancy is higher in Austria, smoking remains far more prevalent, alcohol is a daily staple for many, and coding practices differ. And while European rules do more to keep out junk — i.e., no drug ads to consumers, tighter oversight of additives, a precautionary approach — you still find head-scratchers like the EU's renewed glyphosate approval, and the official dietary guidance in Austria is every bit as misguided as America's: more grains, less meat, avoid saturated fat.  Meanwhile, the water story flips the other way; Austria's alpine spring water really is great, while here I won't drink unfiltered tap water. The throughline I keep coming back to is the environment. Austrians still walk and bike more, take real vacations and spend time outside. But the trend is heading in the wrong direction.  My takeaway for both sides of the Atlantic is the same: don't wait for guidelines or brands to save you. Vote with your fork and your feet. Buy directly from farmers when you can. Filter your water. Create a home rhythm that makes movement and sunlight normal. Ignore food-industry talking points. And recreate the conditions humans have traditionally thrived in, focusing on better food, cleaner water and more time outside. If that resonates, start small this week. Audit what's in your pantry, pick one item you can swap for a simpler version, take your next meeting while on a walk, and move dinner earlier so your sleep isn't collateral damage. Then share this episode with a friend who still thinks “Europe is automatically healthier” or that “America is too far gone.” The future isn't predetermined; it's built choice by choice.
