What if none of this were real, but instead we were in a simulation? What would that mean about life, about the notion of reality, and about our own existence? From award-winning, Seattle-based author Daryl Gregory comes a story following two friends on a cross-country bus tour through glitches as they grapple with secrets, love, and family — issues that are not uncommon, except these take place in a simulated world. When We Were Real follows longtime best friends JP and Dulin. When JP finds out his cancer has aggressively returned, Dulin decides it's the perfect time for one last adventure: a week-long bus tour of the Impossibles, the glitches and geographic miracles that started cropping right after the Announcement that revealed our world to be merely a digital simulacrum. The outing promises to be the trip of a (not completely real) lifetime. Unlike other sci-fi hits like The Matrix or Vanilla Sky, these characters know they are simulations. Through this self-awareness, they — as well as readers — explore what it means to be human, to be alive or even real. Through a cast of colorful characters (like a pregnant influencer determined to make her child too famous to be deleted) or the stops they make along the way (like a tunnel outside of time or a motivational-speaking avatar's compound) JP and Dulin have no shortage of things to talk about as they venture toward the tour's final stop, where the travelers may find out who is actually running the simulation. When We Were Real aims to uncover the things that really matter in life, even in an artificial world. Daryl Gregory is the award-winning author of numerous novels, including Revelator, Afterparty, and Spoonbenders, a Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy Award finalist. His novella We Are All Completely Fine won the World Fantasy Award and the Shirley Jackson Award. He currently resides in Seattle, Washington. Matt Dinniman is a writer, artist, and musician (well, he's a bass player) from Gig Harbor, WA. He is the author of several books, including the bestselling Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Imagine capturing the essence of homesickness and nostalgia through the lens of a filmmaker in their own hometown. That's exactly what Brianna Murphy set out to do in Gig Harbor, Washington, alongside her creative partner Julian Doan. We unravel the layers of their filmmaking journey, from using Brianna's parents' home as a set to discovering the mesmerizing summer light of the Pacific Northwest. Their film, featured at the Tacoma Film Fest, is a testament to the personal and emotive storytelling that resonates deeply, not only with them but with everyone who's ever felt the pull of their roots.Next, we explore the behind-the-scenes magic of production, where creativity flowed as naturally as the script itself. From the infusion of real plants by production designer Sophia Odegaard to the dual talents of lead actress Jules, also known as Isla Vidal, every element of the film speaks to authenticity and passion. The process wasn't without its challenges, but the team's dedication shone through, especially in the moments where their vision was brought to life on screen. It's fascinating to see how a creative collaboration, born out of chance encounters, can culminate in a film score that perfectly complements the narrative. We then hop over to the world of documentary filmmaking, where John McDonald takes us on a profound journey with "Call Me Mule." His film's global impact highlights the universal appeal of unique lifestyles and stories. Through John's eyes, we learn about the art of building rapport with both human subjects and their companions, the mules. His innovative blending of vintage and modern technology breathes new life into the narrative, illustrating the ever-evolving techniques in the documentary realm. This episode paints a vivid picture of storytelling's diverse forms, from personal tales in the Pacific Northwest to global documentaries that capture the heart and soul of their subjects.Send us a textSupport the show

"No greater love has any man than this - that a man should lay down his life for a friend." Jahn 15:13 I want to dedicate this episode to Leslie, and the other amazing first responders, law enforcement and veterans I spoke to at the "Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation" Prayer Breakfast in Gig Harbor, Washington over the weekend. https://ptsdfoundation.org In this episode I share some astonishing acts of courage demonstrated by Americans throughout history.; 9/11, Revolutionary War times, World War II, and more. Amazing stories. Astounding 9/11 stories revisited as we consider what it means to lay down one's life for a friend. Even greater love - for someone we don't even know. We must never forget. Is laying down our life more than we think it is? Shouldn't we be laying down our lives in that we give of our time, our resources and our energy to those in need? To lay aside our desires and ambitions - even for a moment - to meet the needs of others. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rose-unplugged/support

David Brame's career and family life seemed picture-perfect. He ascended to the top of the Tacoma Police Department, earning respect & accolades along the way. When he was appointed as the police chief in 2001, he had it all: a thriving career, a loving wife, and two beautiful, young children. He rapidly rose through the ranks, having multiple close family members in law enforcement lent to the increasing potency of his power on the force. Behind the facade of success, Brame's life was riddled with darkness and deceit. A portrait of Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in "The Godfather" hung in his office, a symbol of the sinister power he wielded.Delve into the tragic tale of Tacoma's top cop family. The stories of violent and coercive behavior, as well as sexual misconduct behind the scenes while David Brame served as the Tacoma Police will leave you outraged. Beneath the wholesome all-American image that was portrayed, there were dark, disturbing secrets. Brame's career was marred by accusations of rape and sexual coercion, covered up by the very department sworn to protect the public. The manipulation and control extended into his personal life. His wife, Crystal, endured years of psychological and physical abuse. Her attempts to escape his grasp were met with terrifying retaliation and manipulation. She finally got the courage to file for divorce leading to a cascade of escalating threats and intimidation from her recently estranged husband David Brame, culminating in a tragic murder-suicide. On April 26, 2003, Brame shot Crystal in a public parking lot, before taking his own life, leaving their two children to witness the horrifying event. We'll uncover the chilling details of David Brame's abuse, the horrifying systemic corruption that enabled his actions, and the devastating impact to not only those closest to the couple, but the community at large. It's a sobering reminder of the dangers so many women encounter. Domestic violence continues to threaten the lives of women and children the world-over, but the haunting depiction of that abuse paired with a partner wielding nearly unchecked power emphasizes the urgent need for accountability within law enforcement and society as a whole, particularly because, far too often, it's a matter of life and death. Marie Rogerson gave an incredible presentation while I was in Gig Harbor, Washington. There are two words through which moderates view everything: caring and fairness. If we can learn to communicate our ideas through these two words, we can win moderates to our side. This is a fascinating discussion with many important insights from Marie. What does God's Word say? Proverbs 18:21 ESV Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.James 1:26 ESV If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.Proverbs 12:18 ESV There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.1 Peter 3:10 For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;James 3:8 ESV But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.Episode 1,637 Links:Attend Marie live free, live webinar to learn more!Alan's Soaps https://alanssoaps.com/TODD Use coupon code ‘TODD' to save an additional 10% off the bundle price.
