Main idea: Our sexuality is a gift, to be stewarded as a gift in every season of life - guarded for its proper expression of deep mutual giving of husband and wife in marriage. Outline: 1. Both legalism and license are a distortion of God's plan sexual fulfillment 2. Mutual selfless giving is at the heart of the marriage relationship ◦ You cannot belong physically to one another without belonging spiritually and emotionally ◦ Mutual giving means both spouses seek the pleasure and joy of the other ◦ The emphasis of healthy sexual intimacy is not on taking but on giving ◦ It is wrong to use this text to blame wives for their husbands lust problems 3. Every season of life is a gift of God to be embraced Application: • What is your view of sex and sexual desire? Do you see it as something dirty to be avoided? • Do you see marriage as a deep physical and emotional belonging? • Do you see healthy sexual intimacy as inseparable from healthy spiritual and emotional connection? • Are you committed to seeking your spouses sexual satisfaction? • Is your marriage a space where you feel free to discuss the complexities of sexual intimacy and making your needs known to one another? • Is sex an area that you primarily give or take? • Do you seek to understand your spouses needs? Do you take time to listen and understand them? • Do you see your season of life, with all its challenges - as a gift to be stewarded? Scripture References: • 1 Corinthians 7:1-9 • Genesis 2:24 • Genesis 4:1 • 1 Peter 3:7 Key Concepts: • God's design for human sexuality • sexual temptation • marriage • intimacy in marriage • singleness

1 Corinthians 6:1-11 Main idea: the church will face conflicts - these conflicts should not be taken to the civil courts for resolution, instead they should be dealt with from within the church in order to have reconciliation between Christians. The church has to uphold its new values of fellowship in unity and peace. 1. Conflict is a “human” thing James 4:1 “What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don't they come from your passions that wage war within you? You desire and do not have.” 2. Two ways to resolve conflicts Secular courts vs. church 1 Cor 6:5-6 “I say this to your shame! Can it be that there is not one wise person among you who is able to arbitrate between fellow believers? Instead, brother goes to court against brother, and that before unbelievers!” 3. The proper use of secular courts Rom 13:1-4 “Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God. So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God's command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval. For it is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because it does not carry the sword for no reason. For it is God's servant, an avenger that brings wrath on the one who does wrong.” 4. Christians are called into new fellowship ‘koinonia'– holly, covenantal fellowship with Gods and each other. Acts 2:42 “They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” 1 John 1:3 “what we have seen and heard we also declare to you, so that you may also have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.” “ don't you know that the saints will judge the world? Don't you know that we will judge angels? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or males who have sex with males, no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit God's kingdom. And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians Application: • How do you solve your conflicts? Do you fight, flight or reconcile? • Have you ever been in conflict with another believer? • What do you find most difficult in conflict resolution? • Was your conflict resolved in restored fellowship? If not what went wrong? • Have you ever had a good experience with church conflicts resolution? • Why is it wrong for Christians to take their disputes to civil court? • What is this new kainonia fellowship for Christians? • What do you think we should work on to experience full potential in this new fellowship? • What do you value the most in this Christian fellowship?

"And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”" Mark 9:14-29 In this text, we look at a story in which Jesus exposes our unbelief and shows us that very often, unbelief is the result of a modified view of God. As we struggle in our long term difficulties and battles, we are tempted to modify our view of God's power, presence or love, as we seek to make sense of why it is that we struggle. Key questions that this story makes us ask: * What are your long term struggles? How does your heart respond to these struggles? * What is your view of God in the midst of your challenges? Do you doubt that God can heal you or your struggle? Do you question if God cares? * Faith feels like weakness. At first there is discomfort. At first it feels like it might make things worse. But this is followed by the presence and work of Jesus to heal and restore our lives. * Are you learning to embrace the discomfort of faith? The discomfort of feeling that your are not in control, and that you are always in desperate need of the Saviors guiding presence in your life?
