The American frontier was full of things that settlers and soldiers couldn't explain, and among the strangest were the Wild Man accounts that began appearing in newspapers decades before anyone coined the term Bigfoot.In this episode, we dig deep into the historical record and examine encounter reports from the eighteen forties through the eighteen sixties, beginning with the eighteen sixty-five Paraclifta, Arkansas account published in the Weekly Standard of Raleigh, North Carolina, and working backward to the eighteen fifty-one Greene County cattle chase first reported by the Memphis Enquirer, the eighteen forty-six Crowley's Ridge footprint discovery published in the Baltimore Sun, and the violent eighteen fifty-six pursuit and attack near the Ouachita Mountains. It potentially costs more to get someone new in and sort things out in other ways”.William says everyone loves chopping off the leader's head, as if that magically fixes the circus, when the real clowns are usually deeper in the tent. Stuart argues that the people who've messed up are often the only ones who know how to un‑mess it. Instead of booting leaders for every delegated disaster, maybe fix the systems. Less blame, more solutions. What she finds is stranger and darker: a 1932 murder that turned into a national Southern Gothic spectacle. The victim was a reclusive former Southern belle. The suspects were her eccentric neighbors, a failed concert pianist and an aging socialite, living in a decaying mansion overrun with goats. Newspapers dubbed them the Wild Man and the Goat Woman, and tourists flocked to Natchez to gawk. But beneath the spectacle was the real tragedy: Emily Burns, a young Black woman forced into the story and ultimately blamed, while the white suspects became local celebrities. Sent to Mississippi's brutal Parchman prison, Emily was erased from the public record. Cox set out to write her back in and to expose what Goat Castle reveals about justice in the Jim Crow South. John Tornow, also known as the Wild Man of the Wynoochee, became one of the most feared and hunted men in the Pacific Northwest during the early 1900s. Growing up in the north Georgia mountains in the 1980s, I had an encounter that changed everything I thought I knew about the world. Something massive, walking on two legs, chased me out of the woods when I was twelve years old.
