Playing by ear is one of those things that musicians either know they can do or think they'll never be able to do. Those who are practiced at it seem to have endless tunes at their fingertips. Name a tune, and if they know it, they can play it. To those who can't do it - at least not yet - it seems nothing short of magical. But ask someone to explain how they work this magic, and you will likely get an answer that isn't much of an explanation. They might talk about understanding and learning to hear chords. Or they might say they learned by trial and error, trying to play along with songs they liked. Or they might simply shrug and tell you they have no idea. But it's only rarely that you encounter someone who will actually attempt to explain their process. Notice that I said, "When you meet someone who is practiced at it." Playing by ear is something you can learn. Like so many other apparent feats of magic, there's no real trick to it once you learn how it's done. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's certainly doable. Even better, if you decide to experiment with the practice ideas we're going to talk about today, you'll find that you will begin to notice things in your music that you never paid attention to before, things that help you learn and understand your music at a deeper level. That's why playing by ear is really not a magic trick, but a serious musicianship skill, and that's why I wanted to talk with you about it today. What you're going to hear is a part of a live seminar I gave a while back for our My Harp Mastery members. This call was followed by a workshop where I guided them through the practice techniques from the seminar so they knew how to continue developing their skill in playing by ear. This is the kind of thing we do inside the My Harp Mastery community. We have a live call each week where my coaches and I guide you through every aspect of playing the harp, whether it's learning new music together, or learning how to learn a piece of music, or working on technique or working through our Scale of Success curriculum. If you like learning about topics like this and getting expert instruction on how to be a better harpist and musician, I strongly suggest you check out everything that we include in our My Harp Mastery membership and join us. Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, affecting ~37.6 million people globally, with prevalence expected to double in the coming decades. A recent Lancet Seminar (2026) highlights several key principles shaping modern AF care: • Stroke prevention with oral anticoagulation remains the cornerstone • Early rhythm control strategies improve cardiovascular outcomes • Catheter ablation is increasingly used as first-line therapy • Lifestyle modification—weight loss, exercise, alcohol reduction—reduces AF burden • Integrated care models such as the ABC pathway and AF-CARE improve outcomes The future of AF management is holistic, preventive, and patient-centred. #Cardiology #AtrialFibrillation #StrokePrevention #Electrophysiology #PrecisionMedicine

As foundation models, including large language models and multimodal models, are increasingly deployed in complex and high-stakes settings, ensuring their safety has become more important than ever. In this talk, I present a probabilistic perspective on AI safety: safety risks are treated as structured distributions to be discovered and controlled, rather than isolated failures to be patched. I first introduce probabilistic red-teaming methods that characterize distributions of failures, revealing systematic safety risks that standard evaluation often misses. I then describe probabilistic defense methods that control model behavior during deployment by adaptively steering generation toward constraint-aligned distributions. By unifying failure discovery and behavior control under a probabilistic perspective, this talk highlights a distributional approach for understanding and managing safety risks in foundation models. About the speaker: Ruqi Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University. Her research focuses on probabilistic machine learning, generative modeling, and trustworthy AI. Prior to joining Purdue, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning (IFML) at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell University. Dr. Zhang has been a key organizer of the Symposium on Probabilistic Machine Learning. She has served as an Area Chair and Editor for ML conferences and journals, including ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, AISTATS, UAI, and TMLR. Her contributions have been recognized with several honors, including AAAI New Faculty Highlights, Amazon Research Award, Spotlight Rising Star in Data Science, Seed for Success Acorn Award, and Ross-Lynn Research Scholar.

Many organizations adopt security frameworks but struggle to turn them into day-to-day operations that reduce risk without slowing delivery. This talk presents a practical operating model that pairs ISO/IEC 27001 (as the certifiable management system that runs governance, risk management, internal audit, and continual improvement) with NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 (as the outcome-focused "dashboard" for aligning security priorities to business objectives and communicating posture to leaders). Attendees will see how to translate business goals into CSF 2.0 current and target profiles, convert those profiles into ISO 27001 objectives and control ownership, and design "evidence by default" workflows that reduce audit fire drills. The session will include real-world design patterns (paved roads, tiered decision rights, exception handling with expiry, and control health metrics) and highlight where assurance programs often drift into "control theater." The goal is a repeatable approach that both practitioners and researchers can critique, improve, and apply. About the speaker: Danny Vukobratovich is a Sr. IT Security Analyst at Purdue University, where he manages Purdue IT's ISO program spanning ISO/IEC 27001 (information security), ISO 9001 (quality management), and ISO/IEC 20000-1 (IT service management). He also oversees Purdue IT's business continuity and disaster recovery planning, with an emphasis on building resilient, auditable operating models that support research and administrative missions. Danny's professional focus is translating risk and governance into practical mechanisms, including clear decision rights, "evidence by design," and metrics that measure control health rather than control presence. His background includes security risk assessments, incident response, monitoring and logging, identity and access management, and standards-based audits across diverse environments. Danny holds the CISSP, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Lead Implementer, and ITIL 4 Strategic Leader certifications, and an M.S. in Cybersecurity Management.

Tonight on The Pipes Magazine Radio Show, we welcome Justin Dombrosky. Justin is the Vice President of the Indiana Pipe Club and co-host of the podcast Pipes, Pours, and Pals. He purchased his first pipe — a Missouri Meerschaum Hardwood — in 2017 and, like many of us when starting out, promptly scorched his tongue with a cherry Cavendish blend. What began as a simple curiosity quickly grew into deeper involvement in the hobby. In 2022, Justin and Nate Boland launched their podcast, and in 2023 the Indiana Pipe Club was formed. The Indiana Pipe Show is now preparing for its second event this September. We'll talk about all of that and more on tonight's show. At the top of the show in Pipe Parts, we will have pipe artisan Jeff Gracik talking about the pipe making seminar at the Chicago pipe show that is coming up on April 29, 2026.

Elisabeth presented this talk in Dallas, TX on December 2, 2001. This recording is the result of our work digitizing over 600 cassette tapes of Elisabeth's talks. Each tape is decades old and the quality of the recordings varies quite a bit from tape to tape. As we preserve Elisabeth's legacy, we will share as much of her work as possible, even when technical issues affect the quality of the audio. Each talk is unique in content and tone. All are a blessing and encouragement.
Peter Robbins returns to the show to continue our discussion about Wilhelm Reich. We talk about Peters' latest book, called Deception, and do get into varies discussion about UFO's, and then get into Reich, Cloudbusting, and UFO's.Peter Robbins was first introduced to the books of Wilhelm Reich as a teenager by a college roommate, to whom he remains deeply indebted. In 1976 he met Dr. Elsworth F. Baker, Reich's first assistant for the last eleven years of his life. Soon after this he became a patient of Dr. Baker and entered into almost seven years of medical orgone therapy with the distinguished orgonomist.Robbins went on to enroll in the classes New York University offered in scientific and social orgonomy which was taught by the Reich scholars Professors John Bell and Paul Matthews. They in turn invited him to become a member of their ongoing Seminar in Social and Scientific Orgonomy, patterned after the seminars which Sigmund Freud presided over during the nineteen twenties. Peter spent much of the nineteen eighties involved with this group, presenting a variety of papers to his fellow seminar members under Matthews' and Bell's guidance and leadership.Peter was a volunteer fundraiser for the American College of Orgonomy's (ACO) Building Fund and had two papers on Wilhelm Reich and UFOs published in the Journal of Orgonomy. He was part of a select group of volunteers invited to witness a demonstration of cloudbusting technology and presented on the subject of Reich and UFOs at the ACO's Princeton NJ facility, and at international conferences on the life and work of Reich in New York City, Ashland Oregon, Niece France and Karavomilos Greece. His lectures have been well received at numerous scientific and UFO conferences both here and abroad while his articles on the subject have been published in a variety of print and web publications. Robbins' extensively researched paper, “Politics, Religion and Human Nature: Practical Problems and Roadblocks on the Path Toward Official UFO Acknowledgment” is scheduled to be published in the upcoming issue of Annals of the Institute for Orgonomic Science. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
