Speaker: Associate Professor Dora Neo (National University of Singapore)With the advancement of technology, delivery of financial services, such as payment services, can be achieved almost instantaneously. In the area of trade finance, however, banks have been less quick to harness technology for trade digitalisation. An important reason is that trade financing has historically been heavily dependent on the use of paper. While digitisation of trade documents is easily done, the digitalisation of trade finance requires a supportive legal framework to ensure that concepts like possession, which were developed in relation to tangible documents, can operate in the digital world. In the UK, this framework is now provided by the Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023 which has been described to be "one of the most important bills you have never heard of". Singapore instituted a similar framework by amending its Electronic Transactions Act in 2021. These legislative developments were based on the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR), which has gained increasing global influence since its adoption in 2017. This seminar discusses how the landscape of trade financing affects the use of technology, analyses recent legal developments relating to electronic trade documents, and identifies remaining challenges for trade digitalisation.Biography: Dora Neo is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. She was the founding Director of the Faculty's Centre for Banking & Finance Law, which she led for some ten years from 2013. Her areas of focus include the modernisation of trade finance law, global developments in secured transactions law, consumer protection in the finance industry and contract law. Can we automatically and provably quantify and control the information leakage from a black-box processing? From a statistical inference standpoint, in this talk, I will start from a unified framework to summarize existing privacy definitions based on input-independent  indistinguishability and unravel the fundamental challenges in crafting privacy proof for general data processing. Yet, the landscape shifts when we gain access to the (still possibly black-box) secret generation. By carefully leveraging its entropy, we unlock  the black-box analysis. This breakthrough enables us to automatically "learn" the underlying inference hardness for an adversary to recover arbitrarily-selected sensitive features fully through end-to-end simulations without any algorithmic restrictions. Meanwhile,  a set of new information-theoretical tools will be introduced to efficiently minimize additional noise perturbation assisted with sharpened adversarially adaptive composition. I will also unveil the win-win situation between the privacy and stability for simultaneous  algorithm improvements. Concrete applications will be given in diverse domains, including privacy-preserving machine learning on image classification and large language models, side-channel leakage mitigation and formalizing long-standing heuristic data obfuscations. About the speaker: Hanshen Xiao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science. He received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from MIT and B.S. degree in Mathematics from Tsinghua University. Before joining Purdue, he was a research scientist at NVIDIA Research. His research focuses on provable trustworthy machine learning and computation, with a particular focus on automated black-box privatization, differential trust with applications on backdoor defense and memorization mitigation, and trustworthiness evaluation.

Dieses Symbol nimmt man ohne Mantra, dieses auch, dafür aber dieses nicht. Hä? Das soll funktionieren? Meine Verwirrung war groß, als ich beim Reiki 2 Seminar einer Kollegin hospitierte. Irgendwie unterrichtete sie gaaanz anders als ich. Was erzählte sie da bloß und wie konnte es sein, dass es Symbole gab, die auch ohne das Mantra funktionierten. Klappte das wirklich? Das wollte ich testen und machte die Probe aufs Exempel, schließlich wurde ich ja in die Symbole eingeweiht, oder etwa nicht??? Viel Neues und Altbekanntes im neuen Gewand erwartete mich in diesem besagten Reiki 2 Seminar und stellte für mein Ego einigen Herausforderung dar. Würde ich einen komplett anderen Unterrichtsstil akzeptieren können? :-D Naaa-türlich! Ich testete die Symbole einmal mit und einmal ohne Mantra. Auch ein Tensor kam zum Einsatz und meine Reiki Kollegin und ich diskutierten wild drauf los. Doch, was haben wir feststellen können? Auch hier gilt, es gibt kein richtig und falsch. Alles hat seine Daseinsberechtigung. Du ziehst immer die richtigen Menschen an, gleich ob Schüler oder Lehrer, die zu dir passen. Her research interests lie primarily in copyright law. A significant part of her research focuses on copyright and videogames, and she is also interested in historical aspects of copyright as well as the interface between intellectual property and personal property.Abstract: The exclusive right to control the copying or reproduction of a work has been described by one leading copyright treatise as ‘the most fundamental, and historically the oldest, right of a copyright owner'. The first British copyright statute, the 1710 Statute of Anne, conferred on rightholders the exclusive right to print and reprint their books. Since then, the right has expanded far beyond its legislative origins, and now encompasses acts of copying in both digital and analogue form, those that are both temporary and permanent, and those that are merely incidental to the use of the work. Scholars have expressed concern about the now-expansive scope of the right, and there have been calls to restrict the right (e.g. by removing ‘non-expressive copying' and copying that does not enable the use of the material in question ‘as a work') or to replace it altogether with a broad right of ‘commercial exploitation'.This paper will show that, while these proposals are laudable and inventive, they nevertheless encounter the same pitfalls as those faced by English courts in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when called upon to define the scope of what constitutes ‘copying'. The current largest challenge in ML-based malware detection is maintaining high detection rates while samples evolve, causing classifiers to drift. What is the best way to solve this problem? In this talk, Dr. Botacin presents two views on the problem: the scientific and the engineering. In the first part of the talk, Dr. Botacin discusses how to make ML-based drift detectors explainable. The talk discusses how one can split the classifier knowledge into two: (1) the knowledge about the frontier between Malware (M) and Goodware (G); and (2) the knowledge about the concept of the (M and G) classes, to understand whether the concept or the classification frontier changed. The second part of the talk discusses how the experimental conditions in which the drift handling approaches are developed often mismatch the real deployment settings, causing the solutions to fail to achieve the desired results. Dr Botacin points out ideal assumptions that do not hold in reality, such as: (1) the amount of drifted data a system can handle, and (2) the immediate availability of oracle data for drift detection, when in practice, a scenario of label delays is much more frequent. The talk demonstrates a solution for these problems via a 5K+ experiment, which illustrates (1) how to explain every drift point in a malware detection pipeline and (2) how an explainable drift detector also makes online retraining to achieve higher detection rates and requires fewer retraining points than traditional approaches. About the speaker: Dr. Botacin is a Computer Science Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University (TAMU, USA) since 2022.
