The Cinematography Podcast Episode 328: Kira Kelly, ASC Cinematographer Kira Kelly, ASC, had a rare opportunity in the movie HIM: exploring the genres of horror and sports, which are not usually combined. She and director Justin Tipping focused their discussions on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), specifically how football-related brain injuries often cause hallucinations. This condition was central to building the feeling of surrealism for the main character, Cam. Before beginning the 8 weeks of prep on HIM, director Justin Tipping created an extensive lookbook with ideas for the atmosphere, lighting and costumes. To establish the film's unique, suspenseful, and surrealistic look, he suggested Kira watch The Holy Mountain and Black Swan. “Justin was open to lots of collaboration,” says Kira. “I feel like this film does have such a strong visual look because we were all working together to make the movie.” Camera movement, color, and lighting are all integral to the movie's storytelling. As Cam descends deeper into the underground compound, Kira used specific colors and lighting. She created a document to track the emotional influence of color for each scene, integrating the lighting into the set and programming the colors to change per sequence. Red with orange highlights was used for the Saviors party, reflecting the oxblood red of the team colors. Fuchsia and magenta were used to show rage. For the scenes on the training field, Kira used top lighting, so that the skin tones of the players would have some reflectivity. Kira's camera work parallels Cam's psychological journey. “At the beginning, it should be fun,” Kira explains. “He's playing football. It's much more loose.” The crew used handheld and body cameras, plus a boomerang rig that sent the camera flying down the field. Once Cam feels trapped in the compound, Kira shifted the style dramatically. “That's where we get into more of these center- punched static frames. He's trapped figuratively, and all the ways.” One of HIM's most unique visual elements was the use of a Flir thermal imaging camera. Kelly and Tipping wanted to use the thermal camera to visually represent the internal trauma of what was happening inside the players' bodies and brains during tackles. Kira and her crew created a rig to mount the Flir camera right above the ALEXA 35 and found that the images could converge and focus enough to allow the two images to overlay. The shots could flick back and forth between the regular camera and the thermal camera. In post, VFX added the brains and accentuated the muscles. The thermal camera effectively showed blood flow and hot and cold areas, adding a chilling layer to the physical impact of the sport. Kira feels gratified that her vision for the visual style of HIM tells an effective story. “As a DP, every challenge I have is if an audience is able to understand the story,” she says. “If they don't have the wonderful dialogue, if they don't have the music, if they don't have all of those other things helping the story along, could they tell what's happening just with the imagery? And I feel like with HIM, I say, yeah, I think so. You can see it happening. And that's what's super exciting to me.” See HIM in theaters and on VOD. The Cramps, led by the husband and wife team of Lux Interior and Poison Ivy Rorschach, had one one mission: To save rock n' roll from the corporate monsters who threatened its destruction. The band blended rockabilly, blues, garage rock and the aesthetic of 1950s B-movies into a wholly unique and singular rock and roll concoction that set them apart from their punk contemporaries. But as they began their climb up the music industry's ladder of success, they encountered hordes of brainless zombies who didn't understand their music or their mission, swarms of radioactive bootlegging cockroaches, and a coven of blood-sucking vampires hellbent on destroying the only thing the Cramps held sacred: rock n' roll. Our presence in this world matters. How we relate to our neighbors speaks volumes about how we understand our faith. Because we are disciples of Jesus, our posture towards our neighbors is clear: we are servants. This Sunday, we're going to explore what it means to love and be present to our neighbors not as saviors, but as servants.
This podcast is another in my quest to talk about every Magic expansion. This time I talk about the third set in the Champions of Kamigawa block, Saviors of Kamigawa.
Synopsis Him is a story about an all-American boy who learns to love an all-American sport. Cameron and his family are obsessed with football, specifically the football team, the Saviors. Encouraged by his father, the young Cameron begins to idolize the Saviors' quarterback, Isaiah White, who apparently is the goat. As Cameron grows, he dedicates his life to the sport and is soon well on his way to being drafted in the NFL. With his hero Isaiah White on his last season, it is even likely he will be replacing the goat himself as quarterback for the Saviors. To celebrate, as well as help train his replacement, Isaiah invites Cameron to his secret football bunker for a weeklong sports bootcamp/slumber party. Review of Him From the synopsis I just gave you may be wondering where the horror element comes into the film. Well, basically football is just evil and I will leave it at that until the spoilers. I really enjoyed the first two acts of the movie. The tension was steadily built and I was finding myself more and more interested in the dark underbelly of this world. However, for me the tension never quite reached the apex the film was going for and I found myself disappointed with act 3. Although I will say that act 3 is not devoid of delightful gore and surprises, the climax just didn't do it for me. I wanted there to be a bigger pay off than there was, yet I am left wondering why I expected much of anything given that the only real character development we get throughout the movie is related to how much Cameron does or does not enjoy football. I think it is a really fun idea to combine the sports genre with the horror genre, and I don't think Him does an entirely terrible job, it just could have been better. Score 6/10

The end of Judges depicts a morally decayed Israel without a king, where "everyone did what was right in their own eyes." A Levite's concubine is abused and killed, sparking a civil war against the tribe of Benjamin. The strong oppress the weak, reflecting God's absence. This despair contrasts with the hope in the parallel Book of Ruth, where a weak, foreign widow's faith leads to King David's lineage and ultimately Jesus. The gruesome crucifixion of Jesus mirrors Judges' darkness, showing He took on humanity's sin to redeem and transform, offering grace that restores value to all.
There are 12 Judges spoken of in the book of Judges but we only read stories of 6 of them. And when we stop and examine the sort of men that we are told of in these longer narratives, we find that they are not the rich and powerful. Each of the men chosen to be a judge has a problem. There is something about them that would keep them from leadership in this society, and yet these broken men are the men that God chooses to enact His will and bring salvation to Israel.
Samson's story shows a strong man weakened by impulsiveness, pride, and compromise, driven by personal desires rather than God's will. His choices lead to his capture and blinding. God uses Samson's flaws to disrupt Israel's complacent captivity under the Philistines. In his lowest moment, Samson's repentance restores his strength, enabling him to destroy the Philistine temple. His life foreshadows Jesus, who became weak to save humanity.
Samson, the final Judge in Judges, embodies Israel's cycle of sin and deliverance. Born to a barren woman as a promised Nazirite, he's tasked with saving Israel from the Philistines. Despite his divine calling, Samson's life is marked by compromise, impulsiveness, entitlement, and pride, breaking his vows and using his strength selfishly. His story points to Jesus, the true Savior who fulfills what Samson only begins.
Judges 10-11 tells the unsettling story of Jephthah, a rejected warrior raised to deliver Israel from Ammonite oppression. Israel, having abandoned God for seven foreign gods, is enslaved, and their idolatry deepens as they seek deliverance from false gods. Jephthah, influenced by pagan culture, makes a rash vow to sacrifice whatever comes out of his house for victory. Tragically, his only daughter greets him, and he fulfills the vow, revealing a faith mixed with cultural idolatry, misunderstanding God's grace.

Steven Ogg (Simon of The Saviors on The Walking Dead) plays a character named Blaine Abel whom Cooper, Officer Dana Cypress' son/Sheriff Wayne Cypress' grandson, bumps into while lost in the woods. Martha Cypress struggles with her new normal. Can a Revived even be killed?!
Gideon, a heroic judge from Judges 8-9, goes bad. After defeating the Midianites, Gideon becomes prideful, ignores God, and leads Israel astray with an ephod. His son Abimelech murders his brothers to become king, only to die violently. Warning signs of “going bad” include infrequent prayer, isolation, resentment, materialism, and self-focus. Some lessons we can learn from Gideon are God's judgment is certain, sin curses us, and we need Jesus to transform our hearts. Despite Israel's failures, God pursues them with love.
Fear disrupts normal life. Success hinges on managing fear, as illustrated in Judges 6 with Gideon: God Makes the Called Brave: Gideon, a coward, is called a "mighty man of valor" not for his courage but for what God will make him. We Are God's Instruments: God uses us to accomplish His work in our generation. Start at Home: Gideon destroys his family's idol first, showing personal transformation precedes external impact. Idols cause disobedience and anxiety. Courage Despite Fear: Courage is following God amid fear, empowered by His promise, “I am with you.” The Cross Replaces the Fleece: The cross assures us of God's presence and love, casting out fear (1 John 4:18). Courage comes from our identity in Christ, not personal strength, enabling us to act as His ambassadors.
Gideon's story in Judges 7 is no mere underdog tale. A fearful man, he's transformed by God's presence as his army shrinks from 32,000 to 300, showing: Weakness fosters reliance on God's power (2 Corinthians 12:9). Salvation comes through humble obedience, not might, pointing to Christ. God patiently reassures doubt. Faith requires risky steps. Weakness becomes strength through God. Courage comes from Christ's presence. Gideon's later pride warns against self-reliance. We daily depend on Jesus, who overcame sin and death.
In Judges, Israel's idolatry led to oppression by King Jabin and Sisera. God raised Deborah, a prophetess and judge, who directed Barak to defeat Sisera's army. A miraculous rainstorm disabled Sisera's chariots, ensuring Israel's victory. Jael killed the fleeing Sisera with a tent peg. Deborah's song teaches that faithful leadership glorifies God, inaction is cursed, and obedience achieves God's purposes. Ultimately, God will right all wrongs, pointing to Jesus as the ultimate Savior who brings justice and forgiveness.

Sermon Notes:- Outside of God's grace in my life, I'm one step from stupid.- PRIDE = “I deserve better” “They'll pay for this”- Where do you see pride in our culture?- Jacob = Israel/Judah | Esau = Edom- Edom had money. They had security. They had geographic advantage.- Obadiah 1:3-4 - 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, “Who will bring me down to the ground?”4 Though you soar aloft like the eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord.- Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?- Self-reliance quickly leads to self-deception- Has your heart ever deceived you?- BUT Yahweh will never be defeated.- Obadiah 1:8 - 8 Will I not on that day, declares the Lord, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of Mount Esau?- They placed their hope in the wisdom of man.- Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”- 1 Corinthians 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.- Obadiah 1:10-12 - 10 Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever. 11 On the day that you stood aloof, on the day that strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them. 12 But do not gloat over the day of your brother in the day of his misfortune; do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their ruin; do not boast in the day of distress.- Edom's choice was to fulfill their plan rather than participate in God's- Are we ever like the Edomites?- Obadiah 1:15-16 - 15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head. 16 For as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations shall drink continually; they shall drink and swallow, and shall be as though they had never been.- Romans 6:23 - “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”- Obadiah 1:21 - Saviors (deliverers) shall go up to Mount Zion to rule Mount Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.- How often are we the Edomite?- Are you building your own kingdom like Edom? Or are you surrendering to God's kingdom?- In His kingdom there is no place for pride.- Choose humility over pride. Choose trust over control. Choose Christ over self.- “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)- Faith in the One who humbly rules forever.LIFE Group Discussion QuestionsOpener: When was a time you got really upset over something small—and later realized it revealed something much deeper about your heart?1. Read Obadiah2. Where do you see pride showing up in your life right now—maybe in your relationships, decisions, or even thoughts?3. Have you ever trusted yourself or others more than God—and how did that turn out?4. Why is it so hard to wait on God's plan instead of doing things our own way?5. Jesus chose humility instead of pride—even when He had all the power. What does that teach us about how we should respond when we feel wronged?6. What's one area in your life where you need to lay down pride and trust Jesus more this week?
The Book of Judges follows a repetitive cycle: Israelites worship idols, God allows enemies to oppress them, they cry out, and God raises a judge like Ehud to deliver them. Ehud, a left-handed man with a disabled right hand, kills the Moabite king Eglon, showing God uses unlikely heroes. God triumphs through our weakness, gives us salvation comes faith, overcomes opposition, and values availability over ability.

Since Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony were called up out of necessity, they seemingly a sparked a new energy in the Red Sox clubhouse and now is the time for everyone else to capitalize on this momentum with the Yankees coming to town.
Throughout the book of Judges, one can see Israel's spiritual cycle of disobedience, judgment, cries for help, rescue by judges, and then relapse. They start strong (1:1-4) but fail to fully obey, blaming iron chariots (1:19) and enslaving some (1:28). Key lessons from Judges chapters 1 and 2: Disbelief breeds disaster. Forgetting God's works leads to abandoning Him. Idols enslave; God saves. Flawed judges can't fully save, but God's covenant points to Jesus, who delivers and atones. Cure: repent, obey, pray, and trust God.
Obadiah 1:1-21 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom: We have heard a report from the Lord, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!” 2 Behold, I will make you small among the nations; you shall be utterly despised. 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, “Who will bring me down to the ground?” 4 Though you soar aloft like the eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord. 5 If thieves came to you, if plunderers came by night— how you have been destroyed!— would they not steal only enough for themselves? If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings? 6 How Esau has been pillaged, his treasures sought out! 7 All your allies have driven you to your border; those at peace with you have deceived you; they have prevailed against you; those who eat your bread have set a trap beneath you— you have no understanding. 8 Will I not on that day, declares the Lord, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of Mount Esau? 9 And your mighty men shall be dis-mayed, O Teman, so that every man from Mount Esau will be cut off by slaughter. 10 Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever. 11 On the day that you stood aloof, on the day that strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them. 12 But do not gloat over the day of your brother in the day of his misfortune; do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their ruin; do not boast in the day of distress. 13 Do not enter the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; do not gloat over his disaster in the day of his calamity; do not loot his wealth in the day of his calamity. 14 Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off his fugitives; do not hand over his survivors in the day of distress. 15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head. 16 For as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations shall drink continually; they shall drink and swallow, and shall be as though they had never been. 17 But in Mount Zion there shall be those who escape, and it shall be holy, and the house of Jacob shall possess their own possessions. 18 The house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau stubble; they shall burn them and consume them, and there shall be no survivor for the house of Esau, for the Lord has spoken. 19 Those of the Negeb shall possess Mount Esau, and those of the Shephelah shall possess the land of the Philistines; they shall possess the land of Ephraim and the land of Samaria, and Benjamin shall possess Gilead. 20 The exiles of this host of the people of Israel shall possess the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad shall possess the cities of the Negeb. 21 Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion to rule Mount Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.

In this episode of Adoptees Crossing Lines, Zaira is joined by her editor, cinephile, and dear friend J Way. It's a huge weekend preview as Ryan Coogler's vampire (we think?) flick SINNERS attempts to take the box office crown from A MINECRAFT MOVIE. Plus can Martin Lawrence power the low budget animated talkin' sneaker movie SNEAKS into the top 5? All that plus multiple Jesus movies on a crowded Easter weekend. Holy ep.
