Thank goodness for the inspiration of so many to have the U of U dedicate 100 acres for our Red Butte botanical garden that is known for their conservation and environmental education. Executive Deputy Director, Derreck Hansen, is thrilled for the Red Butte concert series which is underway. The garden is also hosting events and is the most stunning back drop for weddings and summer camp hosting 250 events yearly. You also have to check out the kids garden area made just for them, or find out about gardening classes with water conservation tips. As we all initiate self-care, the Yoga, mindfulness meditation and Tai Chi classes are a hit. The Red Butte Garden's Mission is to connect people with plants and the beauty of living landscapes which they do every day. Check out all that's happening at redbuttegarden.org. 30 years ago, Downtown Alliance started our first Farmers Market in Salt Lake City to support our farmers, ranchers, artist and food vendors growing to 190 food vendors and 190 artists. The Winter market kicked off 8 years ago and is now in the Gateway which Director, Allison Einerson, loves. Even though they have had some contraction with the market due to Covid restrictions on spacing, Allison is seeing new ideas and vendors taking advantage of the low barrier to entry. Allison can rightfully boast about businesses that launched and took off because of the Downtown Farmers market like Rico Foods, Beltex Meats and the Soap Lady to name a few. Don't forget to find out about the canning classes and especially Allison's bread and butter pickling class. The Downtown Farmers Market supports locals first and their mission is shopping to show our farmers and ranchers the love. June 5th is the open date. Go to downtownslc.org for more. Utah has more dark sky state parks than any other state park system. The International Dark Sky Association (IDA) recently awarded Jordanelle, Kodachrome Basin and Rockport State Parks International Dark Sky Park status. These parks bring the total of Utah Division of Parks and Recreation's designated dark-sky parks to eight and drive the aggregate of officially designated dark sky places in Utah to 21. Melinda Meservy decided to leave her 20 years of corporate work behind her, invest her own money and with the support of her parents, launched her plant shop, Thyme and Place. Melinda is right at home when she is surrounded by plants. Her plant shop located at 363 East Harvey Milk Blvd, called Thyme and Place is a dream come true because she takes her passion for plants and teaches us how to get them to thrive in our home. Melinda is serious about fostering her plants in our high sierra desert environment, so when we're ready to buy them and take them home, the plant has already transitioned to our climate. The SLC Economic Development Fund was also critical in supporting Melinda's business. After studying cool plant shops in Europe, Melinda was also inspired to set up an on-site potting bench for her customers to use. Be sure to go to thymeandplaceshop.com. When you've been around skiing and loved it as long as Utah native, Nathan Rafferty, it's perfect that he's the president and CEO of Ski Utah. There isn't a job at Ski Utah that Nathan hasn't done including interning and being the receptionist. He has worked his way up and is respected among the professionals in this 1.7 billion dollar ski industry for the state of Utah. Nathan is an outdoor enthusiast, athlete and cares deeply about our environment. He has his eye on how efficient and responsible we need to be to continue to have the greatest snow on earth. He said our snow making tech capacity is remarkable and we start early in November for our base, but we can't just rely on making our own snow. We have to be good stewards of our environment and transportation is the hot issue right now. Nathan likes the gondola idea for the Little Cottonwood Canyons to get folks up efficiently, avoid huge traffic lines, reduce carbon emissions, reduce air pollution and avoid big snow slides that can be dangerous. After being closed for 168 days Missy Gries, Founder and owner of Publix Coffee headquartered at their West Temple location, with 3 others including the 9th East and 9th South, is still in business. Missy had to dig deep into her business savvy to thoughtfully use recovery money to stay open and support her team. Salt Lake City Economic Development also extended resources to small business as well as Federal PPP which made a difference in recovery. Missy started selling larger bags of coffee, online orders and curbside pickup to stay open and serve her customers. She joined in a 10-restaurant co-op group called the Hive Eats with delivery curated meal service to get creative, grow her business and thrive. Publix also supports Nourish to Flourish. Owner, Amber Devoge of Basalt Day Spa located at 402 East Harvey Milk Blvd feels lucky to have been able to receive the Cares Act funding in Utah along with PPP Federal funds that supported her staying in business. The funding afforded her to shut down for 2 1/2 months to install a new air purification system and set up disinfection practices to keep her staff and clientele safe. This was critical in her intimate boutique spa which is famous for their heated stone massages, facial and exfoliations. Amber has 20 years of dedicated expertise in health and wellness believing we heal from the inside out. Along with her committed staff, Amber is planning for a solid recovery. The Downtown's Farmers Market supports local first and their mission is shopping to show our farmers and ranchers the love. June 5th is the open date. Go to downtownslc.org for more. As VP of Success in Education, which is a Garff Family public Charity that supports educational pathways for children, Erin Trenbeath-Murray brings decades of non-profit leadership experience to the table. With the support of Kathi Garff and Rick Fulkerson, Erin recently launched Women Who Succeed, which is a mentorship program supported by female leadership, for girls and young women who are not advancing in the STEM subjects. They have researched the gap of girls succeeding in science and math in grade school only to drop interest in junior high, due to confidence. The goal will be to reach out to young women and through the support of internships and mentoring, they can support the young students into the STEM programs. When you live in a high Sierra desert like Utah, with our amazing weather patterns and you enjoy the outdoors, you need up to the minute forecast to plan your activities. Evan Thayer grew up on skies and loves the outdoors, so he started his own weather app to stay on top of conditions for skiing. His friends kept asking him about the weather patterns so one thing led to the another and he launched the Open Snow app which is becoming wildly popular. As Even likes to say, he skis first and works second, so this business is perfect for this snow hound. After his success with his Open Snow app, he decided to create Open Summit for all year around conditions. Evan is teaming up with our meteorologist around the country to extend his coverage. Check it out at the app store Open Snow and Open Summit. Utah's main streets define the character of our communities, as much as our cities and national parks.
