Join me on Israel Inside-Out as I take you on a journey to experience the sites, sounds and tastes of Israel as we meet with leading personalities from the one and only Jewish State. In this episode, I tour the Druze village of Horfesh in northern Israel, sit down to interview the former Surgeon General Of The IDF, Brigadier-General (Res.), Professor Tarif Bader, and dip into a plate of Hummus from a local eatery as I digest the conversation. In this fascinating discussion, General Bader tells me about his commanding roles in the aid and rescue missions launched by the IDF to treat victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti (2010) and Nepal (2015), where he oversaw the establishment of an emergency field hospital in both countries. He also tells me about his treatment of Syrian refugees who fled the Syrian civil war into Israel and how they were treated, repatriated and saved by the IDF medical corps and the Israeli defense establishment. General Bader also tells me about life as a member of the Druze community in Israel, his principles for good leadership and his commitment to making a positive difference in this world.Purchase your ticket to The MirYam Institute Annual Regional Briefing, 2023 in NYC, here.Support the showThe MirYam Institute. Chef Ben Rand of Bubula Spitalfields in east London prepares his signature hummus with a date and baharat crunch. Baharat is a Middle Eastern spice blend with cardamom, nutmeg, cumin, cloves, and cinnamon. He fries shallots and adds dates, Baharat, Aleppo chili, and tamari to the hot oil. This is used as the umami-rich topping for the hummus. Watch the full documentary and find recipes here!

The Middle Eastern dish hummus, made of pureed chickpeas and tahini (sesame seed sauce), is justly renowned not only for its rich flavor but also for its remarkable versatility. It can be used as a dip, spread, or sandwich filling. It also lends itself to any number of variations- the addition of roasted garlic, for example, or hot spices. Given its appeal, we were wondering one day what it might be like if it were made with another bean and different spices. We experimented with black beans and discovered that black bean hummus, with Southwestern overtones, is also a winner. The ancho chile sauce on these sandwiches serves as a strong accent. It can be made well in advance and is good to have in the refrigerator to spice up any number of dishes. If you make both the hummus and sauce in advance, then it is just a matter of filling the pita pockets, which makes for a quick lunch or light supper with a bowl of soup. Remember the hummus when you want an easy appetizer, and serve it with triangles of pita bread. Use the sauce as you do here, as an accent.

This isn't a Luke Null episode without human on animal sex talk, so we'll be covering JRHNBR of course, as well as the Fappening era, Tom's KFC Commercial, and the good ole days when Luke and Tom were roommates.
