Two lady-loving ladies who also love each other recap Amazon Prime’s The Wilds.
This is the much delayed final episode for The Wilds, Season 2. We're sorry this took so long! This episode is dedicated to all the folks who gently (but passionately) reached out asking if we were ever going to finish the season. This wouldn't have happened without you folks, and we appreciate the heck out of you. Without further adieu… Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Season 2 Episode 8 (aka EXODUS). We'll talk about the concept of regaining faith, repairing relationships and what is really keeping the girls going. We'll also dive into the ultimate showdown between Leah and Gretchen (so excited for this!), question if there really were daiquiris and cakes, and debate what the consequences of displaced rage are. We'll also try to fill in some of the experiment plot holes that the cancellation left us with (how did Gretchen find THREE islands so close together?) but also just celebrate Leah Rilke. This is your episode Leah, and no one can convince us otherwise. We hope you all enjoy this one!
Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Season 2 Episode 7 (aka Day 50/Day 33 on the island). We know this one's been a long time coming. Honestly we've just been a bit sad as we near the end of the season. We'll talk about mothers in various different forms, and Toni's overwhelming feeling that she's let Martha down. We'll also dive into Leah's spiral (and how continually no one sees it), Shelby's deep insecurity and self-blame, and how challenging it is to deal with a mental health crisis as opposed to a physical health one. Honestly, pretty much everyone in this episode is dealing with a heavy personal struggle, and it breaks your heart a bit to see. This episode features a careful delayering of Seth, and we will trouble through him as an unreliable narrator, as well as how Henry's exists only ever in relation to Seth. We'll also talk about consensus building and voting (what else is new) and all the ways the boys circumvent these concepts to get what they want. It's all about power, as usual. This episode is all about dividing and coming back together, and is a fairly character-driven episode (our favourite!). It's also a huge set up for the finale. So we're excited to talk through it, as all the pieces get set into place! If you haven't signed yet, here is a link to the Save The Wilds petition! ** We plan to release a short episode to specifically address our BIG FEELINGS about the cancellation in a few days, but we just wanted to flag that we don't talk about it or reference it in this episode because it was recorded before the announcement. So enjoy this lovely period where we were blissfully unaware things were about to go sideways. ** Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Season 2 Episode 6 (aka Day 46/Day 26 on the island). We'll talk about Martha and her fear of causing harm, the Ben Folds arc and whether the Gretchen-Blanket saga was real or fake. We'll also challenge the lens used for Ivan and Kirin's altercation in the locker room, discuss the implications of trauma and also question the balance of humanity and morality. This episode also explores Toni's struggle with self-worth, Henry's struggle with Seth's exile and a loooot of Titanic references. Also, FINISH HIM. Let's do this. Want to connect more? Get in touch! Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Season 2 Episode 5 (aka Day 45/Day 16 on the island). This is a huge set-up episode with quite a bit of heft to it... and we are excited to break it down. We'll discuss why Kirin is the worst person to have a hangover with (but the right person for Josh to talk to), the beginnings of Gretchen's "breakdown" and the concept of going home/never going home. We'll also get in our feels about Nora's funeral (and her reappearance), wonder how long the Dean-Leah alliance has been building, question the amount of power that Gretchen gives to her confederates and cheer the return of sassy Thom ("world-altering studies don't just fund themselves, Susan"). This is also the episode where the seeds of Detective!Fatin, Ben Folds and Martha's Rabbits get planted. Which WOW, big things are coming. There's lots to cover, to love and to challenge in this episode (we're looking at you, Gretchen), and it was such a pleasure to do it. (We know this one was a bit delayed. We had some tough irl stuff happen that put us behind in editing. Sorry team and we hope it was worth the wait!) Want to connect more? Get in touch! Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Season 2 Episode 4 (aka Day 42/Day 15 on the island). We'll talk about the ways that Nora is simultaneously remembered and forgotten, Rachel's struggle to move from surviving to thriving and concepts of power. We'll also explore the tension between who needs care versus who gets care, puzzle Leah's super-spy acting skills and question if any of the girls has ever felt safe. Rachel is going to try to start a #justicefordot movement based on this episode (but we're also just happy to celebrate her birthday-- we think you are the best Dot!). Plus, let's hunt a jag. For those looking to skip what happens to Josh, it's the period between 1:20-1:28 (sorry it's long, we have some big feelings about trauma being used as a cliffhanger). Want to connect more? Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Season 2 Episode 3 (aka Day 36/Day 14 on the island). We'll discuss different forms of healing, peaceful (and not so peaceful) transitions of power, and of course the immensely beloved “Home” scene. This episode also brought back the return of duo arcs (our favourite from Season One!) and we are thrilled be able to really dig into these smaller interactions. We'll also talk through Shelby and her guilt, the idea(l) of home, threat levels on each island, and concepts of “us” versus “them”. This episode will of course discuss Scotty (Reed Shannon) and Bo's (Tanner Ray Rook) backstory, and the start of a special two-episode appearance by the jaguar. Want to connect more? Get in touch! Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Season 2 Episode 2 (aka Day 34/Day 12 on the island). We'll discuss the tension that exists between leisure and privilege, the fear of losing control over our stories and concepts of forgiveness and care. We'll also talk about the symbolism behind Raf's bracelet, the problem of Marisol and who did and did not give Leah care. Plus, Dot and books! Martha hunting! The party box! While episodes aren't dedicated quite like they were in Season 1, this episode was a real spotlight for Raf Garcia (Zack Calderon) as we explore his backstory and Leah Rilke (Sarah Pidgeon) for always stealing the show. Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Season 2 Episode 1 (aka Day 30/Day 1 on the island). There is a lot to cover this episode, as we meet a whole slew of new characters and reunite with our favourites. We'll discuss Rachel and what she feels she can and cannot mourn for, the importance of names, and the struggle to balance the things we want versus the things we believe we deserve. We'll also do a comparison of two very different Plane Crash Days, and how we can't believe that no one else is impressed Leah waited AN ENTIRE WEEK before asking Rachel about Nora. Team. That's impressive. We'll wrap it up by doing some of our favourite special segments (Field Notes are back!) and sharing some overall feelings about Season 2. We're excited to be back, and can't wait to share this with you! Want to connect more? Get in touch! WELCOME BACK TO OUT IN THE WILDS! It's finally time to shout about the trailer and HOW EXCITED WE ARE TO BE BACK! Please join us for a ridiculously long foray into less than two minutes of content, and for theories, jokes and just genuine joy! Welcome back to new and old friends. We've missed you and are excited to meet you all. We'll pose questions like: Where'd you get the dirt to fill that pit, Gretchen? Why do we always talk about monsters? How many copies of Jeffrey's book does one ocean need? Sorry, did Gretchen... murder both of the confederates? Who is actually going to cut off Rachel's hand? (yes, we are still debating this) + obviously a (terrifying) lot more. THE COUNTDOWN IS ON! Want to connect? Get in touch! Welcome back for our final Season 1 episode of Out In The Wilds! We are fondly calling this our potpourri episode because it catches (most of) the pieces that didn't fit elsewhere. We're going to talk through the importance of falls from grace for each character and the significance of ongoing redemption arcs on the Island. We'll also discuss the repeating imagery patterns (but like why are they all obsessed with camouflage and God?) and work our way through some listener submitted and frequently asked questions. We found places to laugh a lot in this one, and we hope you laugh a bit too! This is only a goodbye for now! We are still completely reachable through our social media channels below, and are so excited to see you all again when Season 2 comes out (or before, who knows really?). Be safe and be well, until we see (/talk!) to you all again, and a big thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You all are GREAT! Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! Episode 16 is the fifth (and last!) of our “duo” series, where we take a deeper look into each of the pairs outside of the context of the recaps. Next up is Shelby Goodkind (Mia Healey) and Dorothy Jane Campbell (Shannon Berry)! This one is monster length (we did warn you that it might be Texas-sized) but hey — we are nearing the end and we figure you might miss us when we are gone (until next season)! We'll talk through the ways that both Shelby and Dot tie their self-value to utility, concepts of penance and redemption, conspiracies about confederates and the overarching difficultly of trust. We'll also talk about the degree that each girl is seeking peace, why being seen can be dangerous, the challenges of falling into old habits and how both Shelby and Dot have different understandings of what a wasted life is. We also get into a disagreement. Want to connect more (or officially side with one of us)? Get in touch! Instagram @outinthewildspodcast Twitter @thewildspodcast Email outinthewildspodcast@gmail.com
Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! Episode 15 is the fourth of our “duo” series, where we take a deeper look into each of the pairs outside of the context of the recaps. Next up is Rachel Reid (Reign Edwards) and Nora Reid (Helena Howard)! We will discuss the concept of self-isolation and the ways that Nora and Rachel other themselves from the group, the role that self discovery plays in growth, and the difference between seeing and monitoring. We'll also discuss regret over who you align yourself with (especially when it leads to loss), why Leah scares Nora the most, what is Rachel really seeking and why Dot sees more value in Rachel than Nora. Rachel and Nora represent duality in such a potent way, so we are excited to unpack the ways they push and pull on each other. Plus! Fire! Water! Blood! Want to connect more? Get in touch! Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! Episode 14 is the third of our “duo” series, where we take a deeper look into each of the pairs outside of the context of the recaps. Next up is Linh Bach (Chi Nguyen) and Gretchen Klein (Rachel Griffiths)! A bit of a different pairing to be sure, but we are excited about this one. We'll talk through the dubious and obscured motivations of both characters, the question of who is manipulating and when do we become the thing we are fighting against. We'll also get into the concepts of resurrection, desecration and remembrance, as well as ask you to consider who mourns Linh as a person versus Jeanette as a symbol or a tool. Do we also call out Gretchen as a mastermind, a chameleon and a cult leader? Why yes, yes we do. And we stand by that. Also, we stand by the fact that Linh is our favourite secondary character (sorry Regan, Aly still loves you though). Want to connect more? Get in touch! Oh, hey! We’re back with Episode 13! This is the second of our “duo” series, where we take a deeper look into each of the pairs outside of the context of the recaps. Next up is Martha Blackburn (Jenna Clause) and Toni Shalifoe (Erana James)! We’ll talk about Martha’s attempts to reinvent herself and how they relate to the ways she is coping with trauma, the elusive concept of home and the intersections of perfection/imperfection, trusting/distrusting, confrontational/non-confrontational. We’ll also discuss two different depictions of resilience and drive, the important distinctions around what is changing you, why Martha latches onto Shelby and the enduring connection to the land. Our special theme for these two is "Fight and Flight", and we will discuss the different ways they each practice avoidance in some situations, but are fully confrontational in others. Also! We tell a lot of stories in this one, went way too deep into what character we would be on the island and Aly is unintentionally super Canadian saying 4x the acceptable amount of “right?” and “you know?”. So feel free to make fun of her. Want to connect more? Get in touch! Instagram @outinthewildspodcast Twitter @thewildspodcast Email outinthewildspodcast@gmail.com
Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! Episode 12 is the first of our “duo” series, where we take a deeper look into each of the pairs outside of the context of the recaps. First up is Leah Rilke (Sarah Pidgeon) and Fatin Jadmani (Sophia Ali)! We’ll talk about loyalty and accountability, the ways that Fatin others herself, the relationship between control and release, how both girls value trust and of course the dismantling of stereotypes. We’ll also talk about that weird transient space that exists between being a kid and an adult, differing opinions on sex/love and the ways that Leah and Fatin are simultaneously reckless and careful. Such an utter joy to get to really think about these two, and how each mirror, pair and contrast with the rest of the girls. Want to connect more? Get in touch! Holy, it’s finally here! Episode 11 of Out In The Wilds is up! This one’s for you all — everyone who has shared kind words with us, yelled about characters and conspiracies with Aly or just been along for the ride. We appreciate all of the support, adore you all and are ecstatic it’s not over yet! This is the first in a series of non-recap episodes that we are so excited to share with you. We’ll talk our Big 4 Theories (one is 3 parts— does that make it Big 6?), Deserted Island Partner of the Season, favourite characters, and our hopes and dreams for next season. We’ll also ask you all to think hard about who Gretchen really wants to win, why there is a USSR submarine clock, and when the girls were picked. This one is analysis heavy (you’ve been warned!), but also we promise there’s some jokes. Or no jokes? Who’s really to say. Want to connect more? Get in touch! Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It’s time to shout about Episode 10/Day 23 on the island and to talk about what we honestly think is one of the best season finales we have ever seen. We’re going to go deep into what motivates Nora, how Dot’s leadership isn’t just about survival, why Nora sees Rachel and Toni in similar ways, and whether Gretchen has an unhealthy fascination with pancakes (just kidding about that one). We’ll also talk about the multiple cliffhangers we get, why Agent Young is uniquely susceptible to being manipulated and what a fantastic job we think that Helena Howard did. We are saving most of our large scale conspiracy theories for next episode, but we do get into some small scale favourites. As always, this episode is an ode to Nora, but in many ways is a homage to the entire show. Want to connect more? Get in touch! Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It’s time to analyze Episode 9/Day 22 on the island and to talk about the absolute G.O.A.T. Martha Blackburn. Look forward to us describing Leah using the word “spiralling” way too many times, yelling about powwow food (if you don’t know what a taco in a bag is, look it up!), and criticizing all the survival moves the girls make. We also get into the question of whether Martha is dead, why Gretchen gave Agent Young the box, the concept of home, the importance of perception versus reality, redoing pivotal moments, and what is possibly the best scene in the whole series. Because it’s on brand, we will also talk about Indigenous representation, the importance of Jenna Clause’s portrayal of Martha, and stereotypes versus accurate depictions. Want to connect more? Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It’s time to cover Episode 8/Day 16 on the island. Shelby Goodkind, here we come! In the words of S. Twain, let’s go girls. This is a hefty episode length-wise and content-wise. We promise there are some jokes in there. We will get into the ocean party montage, what the return of Marcus means, Gretchen’s donor lunch, the power struggle between Dan and Shelby and how sketchy this “paying off the pilot” plan is. We will also talk about Shelby’s (Mia Healey) backstory, including the perception of people as disposable, the fear of being alone, how she connects physical beauty to spiritual wellness, the danger of Dave and whether we have ever seen Shelby without a mask on. Also— somehow we mention slumber parties three times. Want to connect more? Get in touch! Welcome back to Out In The Wilds! It’s time to get into Episode 7/Day 15 on the island. There is a lot to cover this episode between the fight, kiss-and-run, Gretchen's really problematic speech, and everything to do with Linh Bach (Chi Nguyen) and her alter ego Jeanette. But we are really excited to share this one with you. We’ll talk fever dreams, the role of the confederate, suitcase usefulness and obviously the bizarre fact that the girls named it “Gold Cliff Beach” (Why? Who specifically named it? What else have you named? IS THERE A MAP?). We’ll also debate and dissect our way through Gretchen’s monologue, learn to question everything we know about the experiment, wonder about Rachel and Leah’s relationship status, lament the limited time we get to spend with Linh, and shout about the fantastic writing. Welcome to Episode 6 of Out In The Wilds. It’s time to cover Episode 6/Day 12 on the island! We talk conspiracy theories, desolate geographies, and the underlying sense that something is definitely wrong. We also get into the root of Toni’s distrust of Shelby, mussel-gate, our resident frightening psychologist, how not to provide counselling to young women, the design of the bunker, and a whole lot of Gretchen. It’s a return to Leah this episode, so let’s cheer for Sarah Pidgeon and how she demonstrates the multifaceted nature of mental health. Want to connect more? Get in touch! Welcome to Episode 5 of Out In The Wilds! It's time to cover Episode 5/Day 7 on the island. This one's for you, Fatin Jadmani. We'll talk about the weight of being a prodigy, Rachel's need to rely on others versus Nora's need to rely on herself, why Martha can't count to sixty, what is the recognition and applause that Fatin is actually looking for, dead bodies, and whether Leah is Gretchen's biggest risk. We also had a bit of a change of heart over Fatin's Suitcase of Wonders, but stayed firm that we love Sophia Ali. Want to connect more? Get in touch! It’s Thursday, so you know what that means? It’s time to cover Episode 4/Day 6 on the island! We’ll talk about the Dot and Fatin of it all, who had the better Shelter Building Team, Toni’s existence as a Disaster!Lesbian, why Regan is a fan favourite, is the Island hell or purgatory and weirdly biometrics. This episode was an intersectional identity dream for Aly (who is both Indigenous and queer) so don’t be surprised that we talk media representation, queer tropes and the trick of global Indigeneity. It’s finally Toni Shalifoe’s episode, so we will be yelling (and crying) about our favourite firecracker and the stellar job Erana James does portraying her. We love this one, and hope you do too. Welcome back to Out in The Wilds! It's Episode 3/Day 3 on the island, and we're dreaming in sushi and Indian tacos. We'll talk about being invisible vs. being seen, suspect motivational coaching, the Marcus mystery, childhood friends, and the Dawn of Eve propaganda. This is also Dot Campbell's episode, so we will be gushing about our favourite leader and cheering on Shannon Berry. Not gonna lie, this one got a little weird (and jokey). But our love of all things Dot just brought it out in us! If you haven't watched Amazon Prime's The Wilds yet, what are you doing here? Go get it, Marty! Welcome everyone to Episode 2 of Out in the Wilds! We are pumped to take you through Day 2 on the Island, including a deep dive into Rachel Reid (all puns intended). We'll talk physical and symbolic journeys, word games, whether we are secretly Leah stans, Dot's pharmacist alter ego and the phenomenal job Reign Edwards did portraying Rachel. This one is a bit longer, but we had so much to say! Follow us on Instagram @outinthewildspodcast and get in touch at outinthewildspodcast@gmail.com.
Welcome to Out in the Wilds, where old married lesbian couple Rachel and Aly recap Amazon Prime Video's The Wilds. We talk all things Episode 1 this week, including: - Leah's love puddle - Did P!nk sponsor this episode? - Why is Shelby so obsessed with icebreakers? - What is in Fatin's suitcase? - Is accapella back? All this and more including a discussion on non-Indigenous folks using Indigenous terms, women telling women's stories, and data security.
