Today's poem is What The Suitcase Bearing my Family Name Might Have Contained When it Arrived at Auschwitz by Ava Nathaniel Winter. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Maggie writes… "It is a privilege to have lived in the same part of the same country, safely, for generations. It is a privilege to have a basement, an attic, or a garage filled with boxes: books, family photos, children's artwork from years of school. They are just things, yes. And they are not just things at all. I try to remember this privilege when complaining about clutter."This show is supported by gifts from listeners. It's Feel-Good Friday, and Unpacked host Aislyn and producer Nikki are joined by a guest they've been waiting weeks to record with: Afar senior editor Lucy Kehoe, who also edits our UK sister title, Suitcase. Three stories, all good news, landing fittingly on Juneteenth. This week's stories: A landmark opening in Chicago lands right on Juneteenth: a nearly 20-acre campus on the South Side, a decade in the making, that's less presidential library and more civic gathering place, right down to an Oval Office anyone can sit in. Five new museums are arriving in one famously museum-rich city this year, from a vertigo-inducing glass storehouse where you can watch conservators at work to a love letter to teenage subcultures, Walkman included. A newly protected stretch of the South Pacific roughly the size of the Amazon rainforest. One that's Indigenous-led, tourism-friendly, and home to about three-quarters of the world's coral species. Plus: Nikki's very specific dream of finally meeting a dugong in the wild. Tune in every Friday through June for a fresh trio of stories from Afar's favorite travel writers and editors. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Surveillance cameras in Two Rivers, Wisconsin captured Jesse Vang pulling up to the donation door of a St. Vincent de Paul store on February 19, 2024 and dropping off a dark-colored suitcase. He'd borrowed a neighbor's Nissan Altima. He'd left his phone at home playing a Netflix movie. When investigators tracked down and tested that suitcase, the Wisconsin State Crime Lab found one DNA profile inside. It was Elijah Vue's.The next morning, Vang reported the three-year-old missing. He told police the boy walked off during a nap. That story was already being coordinated — Elijah's mother Katrina Baur sent Vang a message within sixty seconds of the 911 call telling him what to say. She deleted it. Investigators found it anyway. What unfolded over the next seven months was one of the largest searches in recent Wisconsin history. FBI agents, state investigators, community volunteers numbering in the hundreds. They searched landfills, rivers, storm drains, and private property. A $40,000 reward went unclaimed for months.A hunter found Elijah's remains in September 2024, three miles from Vang's apartment, in a wooded area that had been searched before. Forensic analysis revealed injuries that occurred weeks before the child died. Both Vang and Baur face felony charges. Both have pleaded not guilty. Tony Brueski walks through the investigative timeline — the phone data, the surveillance footage, the suitcase, the deleted messages, and the seven-month search that ended in a forest three miles from where it started.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Christine Schoefer shares about her packing process and how plans can go awry.
The night before Jesse Vang called 911 to report three-year-old Elijah Vue missing, surveillance cameras in Two Rivers, Wisconsin captured him driving a borrowed Nissan Altima through town. His phone was sitting at his apartment, playing a Netflix movie — building what prosecutors allege was a false alibi. On camera, Vang pulled up to the donation door at a St. Vincent de Paul store and dropped off a dark-colored suitcase. When investigators recovered that suitcase weeks later, the Wisconsin State Crime Lab found a single DNA profile inside. It belonged to Elijah Vue.That suitcase is one piece of a case built on evidence Vang and Katrina Baur — Elijah's mother — allegedly tried to destroy. Deleted photographs. Erased Facebook messages. A story about a sleeping toddler who wandered away that collapsed the moment investigators pulled the surveillance footage. Baur had sent her three-year-old to stay with Vang, her boyfriend, for what she described as “disciplinary reasons.” She wanted him to teach Elijah “how to be a man.” Vang called it “boot camp.” What the criminal complaint describes is a week of forced standing, cold water, isolation, and escalating cruelty — documented in their own texts and photographs. Baur's phone held a deleted image of Elijah blindfolded with bruising on his face, taken at 3:13 in the morning. She erased it an hour after she took it.For seven months after Elijah was reported missing, the Two Rivers community searched. Landfills, rivers, forests, private property. A hunter found skeletal remains in a wooded area three miles from Vang's apartment. DNA confirmed they were Elijah's. Doctors found healed fractures on his skull and face and concluded he had suffered prolonged harm. His manner of death: homicide by unspecified means. Vang faces a life sentence on the lead charge. Baur faces up to sixty years. Both have pleaded not guilty — and both are heading toward trial in Manitowoc County, where a judge has denied every defense motion to move the case or sequester the jury.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Online classes happening soon: Grow a Potted Yuzu Citrus, Grow Angel's Trumpet (brugmansia) on Your Patio.--- I once flew home with an olive tree in a suitcase. Maybe not what the average traveller would do, but I was visiting a nursery that had a variety I wanted…which says something about my priorities.Even where olive trees aren't winter hardy, they make superb potted plants. Their silvery foliage shimmers in a breeze, they look beautiful on a patio, and they make a cold-climate garden feel just a little more civilized.Olive trees are tough, forgiving, and well suited to pots. The trick is remembering that a pot changes everything, especially in winter. And while getting olives isn't guaranteed, there are practical ways to improve your odds.In this episode, I talk about growing olive trees in pots where they're not normally hardy: why to grow them, where to put them, how to overwinter them, and what helps them fruit.Want more? In today's conversation transcript, you'll listen to a realistic, upper-intermediate to advanced English conversation between two friends (Dana and Theo) meeting for coffee a few days after Theo got back from a trip to Lisbon — with no luggage. This episode is full of natural spoken English: venting, dry humor, and the kind of supportive friend energy that turns a frustrating travel story into something you can laugh about — including the all-too-relatable fight to get an airline to actually pay you back. You'll learn:The vocabulary word "stonewall" (to deliberately delay, block, or refuse to give someone a clear answer)The natural English expression "I'm not holding my breath" (a realistic, slightly dry way to say you don't really expect something good to happen)How native speakers vent about bad service, lost luggage, and reimbursement battles in a casual, funny wayA fluency tip: how a friend keeps things light under stress with gentle teasing ("It went on a better vacation than you did.")After you listen, practice this: find one line where a friend turns a complaint into a joke, and say it out loud the way they said it — feel how the humor takes the heaviness out of the moment.

Just think, last week I was sailing on the blue Mediterranean. Now I am back home with a bit of jet lag and a new appreciation for comfortable shoes. I thought I was in pretty good shape from walking and going to the gym regularly. Then I spent nearly two weeks exploring cities on foot. I quickly learned why so many of the locals we saw were trim and fit. They walk everywhere. The weather was cool and pleasant, at least by Deep South standards. Many of the locals wore shorts and tank tops while I wore a cardigan every day.... Article Link

In August 2014, 19 year old Heather Mack was on vacation with her mother, Sheila von Weise in Bali, Indonesia. Little did Sheila know, Heather had purchased her boyfriend, 21 year old Tommy Schaefer, a plane ticket to Bali. When Schaefer arrived, the couple executed a plan they had been concocting: they were going to kill Heather's mother to get her inheritance. After brutally murdering Sheila, they placed her body in a suitcase to try to conceal the crime, leading to this becoming infamously known as the Bali Suitcase Murder. Click here to join our Patreon. In May 2004, suitcases filled with body parts were discovered around the Chesapeake Bay area. It took the police some time to identify that the remains belonged to Bill McGuire. This was in large part because Bill had not been reported missing, so the authorities turned their attention to his wife, Melanie. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss what the media has dubbed "The Suitcase Murder." Melanie told the police that Bill was violent towards her and had a gambling addiction. She did file for a restraining order against Bill, which gave her story more credibility. But evidence began to come out that poked holes in Melanie's story. What began as a drunken game of hide-and-seek ended in a claustrophobic nightmare that shocked the nation. While Sarah Boone claimed the death of Jorge Torres was a tragic accident, her own cell phone footage told a much more sadistic story of taunting and intentional neglect. We unpack the chilling "suitcase tapes" and the legal battle that eventually led to a life sentence for one of Florida's most notorious defendants. Year two at the Mass Timber Conference for their 10 year anniversary and we're practically locals. We're recording live from the Union Ironworkers booth — on the second floor of a structure they built inside the Oregon Convention Center — talking show stats, Shark Tank-style investor pitches, and why every lumber person should have this conference on their radar. Then we sit down with Neveah, an architecture student we sponsored to attend, who casually mentions she designed and built a tiny home at 16. From scratch. With secondhand materials. Sexier Than A Squirrel: Dog Training That Gets Real Life Results
Send us Fan MailWelcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, the wonderful Sam is back to chat to Lauren about a rather unusual training tool: a suitcase.Siri, Sam's Jack Russell, used to find the outside world pretty overwhelming. Walks could quickly turn into moments of panic and reactivity. But a simple idea - a suitcase covered in unicorns - helped turn those tricky situations into something far more predictable and productive. The “magic suitcase” isn't really magic at all. It's a portable kit filled with games Siri already knows and loves. Over time, the suitcase itself became a cue: when it appears, it means “we're about to play our games”. That sense of familiarity gives Siri something clear and positive to focus on, even when the environment around her feels challenging.Lauren and Sam talk through how Sam built this system step by step. It started at home with short, successful sessions, layering different games onto the same prop so Siri learned that the suitcase always means the same thing. From two paws up and wrap-arounds to boundary settles, scent searches, and even a noise box, each activity became part of the same predictable routine. It's outside in the real world where the suitcase really comes into its own. When things feel a bit spicy - a busy street, a sudden distraction, a trigger appearing in the distance - the suitcase helps Siri switch from worry to work. Sometimes that means calm, nose-led activities; other times it's more dynamic games that channel her energy in a helpful way.If you have a reactive, nervous, or easily over-aroused dog, this episode offers a simple, creative way to bring familiar training games with you wherever you go - helping your dog feel safer, calmer, and more able to make good choices.Ready to give it a go with your own dog? Sam would LOVE to see you and your dogs get creative with their own magic suitcases.Part of Games Club? What happens when a high-society fertility nurse decides her husband is no longer part of her "happily ever after"? You get one of the most clinical, cold-blooded, and flat-out jaw-dropping true crime stories in New Jersey history. This week, we're diving deep into the life of Melanie McGuire—a woman who lived a double life fueled by a "lusty" office affair with a prominent doctor. We're talking thousands of dirty emails, secret "burner" phones, and a digital paper trail that would make a soap opera writer blush. But when the "Lust" hit a breaking point, Melanie didn't just ask for a divorce. She used her medical expertise to orchestrate a "system override" of her marriage that involved a sedative cocktail, a .38 caliber revolver, and a three-piece set of matching Kenneth Cole luggage. From the "Ice Queen" persona in the courtroom to the "moderately intelligent" mistakes involving an EZ-Pass and some very specific target-practice bullets, we break down how a suburban dream turned into a forensic nightmare. It's a story of surgical precision, designer disposal, and the ultimate betrayal by the "work husband" she risked it all for.Grab a beer and lock your bathroom doors—this one gets messy.Find Us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/c/BrohiopodcastWe Live Stream All Our Episodes! youtube.com/brohiopodcastFind us on all the socials @BrohioPodcast
