Host Meg Wolitzer presents three stories about finding solutions to complex problems, and to simple ones. T. C. Boyle tackles evolution and government intervention in “Top of the Food Chain,” read by Zach Grenier. In Matthew Ryan Frankel's “Carapace,” a young boy struggles with feelings at a family funeral—with the help of some crabs. The reader is Philip Estrera. And a young woman traveling between two worlds and two families has to deal with what to put in “The Suitcase” by Meron Hadero. The reader is Renée Elise Goldsberry. The show also includes an interview with Hadero. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Imagine being a sophomore, leading the NASCAR points with Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough breathing down your neck. That was Dale Earnhardt's reality in May of 1980. He and the Osterlund Team are fresh off back-to-back wins in hot pursuit of more trophies, but the competition is heating up. The young outfit gets a lesson in stock car excellence from Buddy Baker and Waddell Wilson, as Dale has a rematch with the Gray Ghost at Talladega. After a quiet race at Nashville and an engine failure at Dover, things begin boiling over in the 2-car's garage. As the Cup Series returns home for World 600 weekend, there was a tension you could cut with a knife between team management and legendary crew chief Jake Elder. The decision is made to turn their focus away from their Cup program to run the Mello Yello 300 Late Model Sportsman race, and Jake declares he's had enough. To make matters worse, the weekend proves disastrous when a cut tire dashes Dale's hopes of a hometown victory and slashes his points lead in half. The next day, Dale and the Osterlund team get a harsh reminder of why they call Jake Elder: “Suitcase”.FanDuel: Must be 21+ and present in select states (for Kansas, in affiliation with Kansas Star Casino) or 18+ and present in D.C. About two weeks ago, I was on a plane in Minneapolis that touched down a bit later than scheduled. As soon as that seat belt light turned off, a line of anxious passengers with tight, some impossible, connections, smashed into the center aisle. Some would make it, some would not, and maybe if this odd Mazda concept from the 1990s made it to market, everyone would have made their flights.

A mother convicted of murdering her two young children will remain behind bars for at least 17 years, after her sentencing in Auckland today. Hakyung Lee was found guilty by a jury of murdering eight-year-old Yuna Jo and six-year-old Minu Jo earlier this year. She concealed their bodies inside suitcases, hidden inside a storage locker, before leaving the country. The children were discovered almost four years later after the contents of the locker was bought in an online auction. At sentencing, Lee's family spoke of the immense anguish the murders have caused. Finn Blackwell reports.

A suitcase goes missing for nine days across multiple airlines and countries, and we turn the chaos into a clear, repeatable travel system. Alexa walks through the exact steps that lowered stress, sped up delivery, and maximized reimbursements while touring, teaching, and performing on the road.We start with prevention that pays off when things go wrong: layer-by-layer packing photos, a simple cloud inventory, suitcase shots, and bright identifiers that make claims painless. You will hear which items should never leave your carry-on, why sentimental or irreplaceable pieces either stay home or stay with you, and how old, overstuffed luggage quietly raises your risk of damage. We dig into AirTags and Tiles, airline bag-tracking apps, and when travel insurance is worth it for long or complex trips—plus how it filled the gap when airline reimbursement fell short. Then we get tactical. At the first hint of a delay, work every channel: line up at the gate desk, rebook in the app, and call the airline at the same time. If your bag does not arrive, head straight to the baggage desk before leaving the airport, file a claim, and lock down your reference number. Keep every receipt, scan everything, and centralize notes, photos, tags, and forms. Learn how to contact partner airlines to find the last scan, what daily allowances typically cover, and how to choose versatile essentials that carry you through work and play without wasting money. We also cover deadlines for delayed, damaged, and lost luggage, passenger rights under US DOT, EU 261, and the Montreal Convention, and how to coordinate benefits across the airline, your insurer, and your credit card.Travel smarter, not harder. Save this playbook for your next trip, share it with a friend who checks bags, and tell us your wildest lost-luggage story on socials. In this episode we get to hear "suitcase stories" from a local friend outside of the XIS community. Audrey's work as a teacher and translator and her involvement with English corners have given her lots of opportunities to interact with and build relationships with foreigners in China and she has some great insights to share. We also get to hear G10 student, Kimi Lee, share a collaborative approach to learning about culture as well as learn the saying, "三人行必有我师“/”When there are 3 people walking together, one of them is bound to be able to teach me something."
In Downingtown, Chester County, Pennsylvania, the Valley Creek Road Twin Tunnels were long known for eerie local legends and ghost stories. But in 1995, the folklore turned frighteningly real when a body was discovered there. The chilling find linked the tunnels to an actual, gruesome crime—and more than 30 years later, the case remains unsolved.
Kristina Garrison, a Ukrainian-raised San Franciscan turned globetrotting mom of two, and her classically trained chef husband David Garrison have just soft-opened Grub Smokehouse in a coworking-space kitchen in Youngsville/Wake Forest, NC—their non-traditional barbecue haven born from a hole-in-the-wall California burger joint shut by COVID, four-and-a-half years of culinary inspiration across Europe and Israel, and a ChatGPT-assisted leap to the Tar Heel State with five suitcases and zero local ties. In week three of word-of-mouth operations, they're smoking everything in-house (12-day-brined pastrami, scratch sauces, seasonal salads, daily sweet-potato cinnamon rolls) on a shoestring DIY buildout, balancing 14-hour grinds with yoga, cold plunges, and an industry discount while betting that perfect-bite flavor symphonies and organic influencer meals will turn curious locals into loyal regulars in a growing melting-pot market.10 Key Takeaways Non-traditional BBQ = perfect-bite melody: Every sandwich/sSant is engineered for balanced flavor layers—smoky meats, house pickles, scratch sauces, seasonal produce—so one bite sings like a song. No shortcuts, no cans: Zero preservatives, no can opener in the kitchen; everything brined, smoked, pickled, or baked fresh daily (pastrami alone: 12-day brine → smoke → steam). Tiny menu, massive focus: Just 5 sandwiches, a few salads, 2 desserts—narrow to nail execution and avoid waste (day-old bread becomes bread pudding). Global palate, local roots: Four-plus years in Croatia, Italy, Spain, Israel re-inspired Kristina & David Garrison; now sourcing from NC farmers and a local bakery to keep it fresh and community-supported. DIY on a dime: Vacant coworking kitchen → smoker install + handmade wallpaper/paint; low overhead lets labor-intensive quality shine despite inflation squeezes. Organic growth > paid hype: Soft-open via word-of-mouth + free meals for genuine local foodies/influencers; authenticity trumps bots or fake reviews. Balance is the new hustle: Yoga, breathwork, sauna, cold plunges replace the old “work hard, party hard” chef culture—keeps Kristina & David Garrison fit and sustainable long-term. Know your niche, own your price: Slightly higher tabs justified by love and prep; not for everyone, but perfect for foodies who crave preservative-free craftsmanship. First year = grind with savings: Expect 12–14-hour days, weight loss, dual jobs; success demands 1-year runway and DNA-level passion (they almost opened a second CA spot pre-COVID). Community heartbeat: Industry discount + rising-tide networking; independent restaurants remain essential third places for real human connection in a screen-heavy world.
In this conversation we get to hear from our very own Miss Harris (XIS Principal) and Niu Laoshi (lead for XIS' Chinese language program)! Both of them have a lot of experience (and stories!) of watching new arrivals come and adjust to their new life here in China and at XIS. We also learn some important cultural tips from XIS G10 student, Helina Ju, as well as learn the idiom, "因地制宜“/ ”Suit measures to local conditions".

Find out, the answers to these questions and more on this weeks "sode" of The Cammo Comedy Show Podcast! If you have any funny military stories of your own that you would like to share, drop us a line at:stories@cammocomedy.com or Leave a voicemail at (531) 222-6146 Sadly, the voicemail will only record in 2 minute blocksWe are here to make you laugh, but behind this there is the imbedded philosophy of, "No One Left Behind." Sadly, 22 vets per day commit suicide, approximately 67,500 vets are homeless and thousands struggle with everyday life after service. What we hope to accomplish is providing a fun place to gather that will have a similar feel to the conversations that happen at the VFW or American Legion between vets. Since the latest generations of vets are not really going to these places anymore, we are making it happen online. We believe that the sense of community will help some who struggle, while providing stories about the good times that we can all laugh at!An additional part of this show is capturing the oral history of the military over the past few decades, so if you happen to know a veteran who served during WW2, Korean War or Vietnam eras, we would love to hear from them. Obviously, we want to hear stories from all eras, but we have special respect for the older generations.
