DL and Evil Jimmy go deep on the best and worst albums of 2001 — a year that somehow produced Gorillaz's self-titled debut, The Strokes' Is This It, System of a Down's Toxicity, Tool's Lateralus, Jay-Z's The Blueprint, and Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American all at once. They build a collective top 10, trading picks and hot takes: Gorillaz at number one, Toxicity at two, Is This It at three — plus arguments for Opeth's Blackwater Park, Converge's Jane Doe, Tool's Lateralus, Muse's Origin of Symmetry, Jay-Z's The Blueprint, White Stripes' White Blood Cells, and Neurosis rounding out the list.Along the way: why Nickelback and Creed represent everything wrong with 2001 mainstream rock, the case for Built to Spill's Ancient Melodies of the Future, Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the Toadies' Hell Below Stars Above, Ben Folds' Rockin' the Suburbs, Tenacious D's self-titled, and Tupac's Until the End of Time. Plus favorite songs of the year, a Stone Temple Pilots deep cut, Andrew W.K.'s She Is Beautiful, and a Clint Eastwood / Morgan Freeman life philosophy detour courtesy of the Gorillaz track.Part of Verse Chorus Verse's year-by-year and album-by-album music coverage.2001 music,Gorillaz,The Strokes,System of a Down,Tool,Jay-Z Blueprint,Jimmy Eat World, album rankings, year in music, indie rock, metal, music podcast

Zach sits down with Ron and Catrina, a married couple behind the YouTube music show Covers on the Spot, to find out what happens when you treat a relationship like a live recording session. Ron is the creative director and host of the show, where bands are given a song they have never heard and tasked with covering it in a single day. Catrina is a graphic designer on the same media team at Musora and the quieter half of a pairing that, by their own description, sounds like "something harmonic." Together, they have three kids, a shared workplace, and a relationship built on aligned values and very different processing speeds.Using a "covers on the spot" framework for the conversation, Zach gives Ron and Catrina relationship prompts and asks them to riff. What comes out is a candid look at how they handle conflict, protect their time together, and keep choosing each other through the daily grind of parenting and working side by side. Catrina is open about her tendency toward passive aggression and the work she is doing to change it. Ron talks honestly about learning to stop "winning" arguments and start listening instead. One of the most striking moments comes when Catrina says their relationship at its best sounds like silence: quiet, smooth, still moving.Zach ties it all together with a Ben Folds story about orchestras resolving dissonance, not just difference, and drops one of his signature reframes: repair is more important than resolve. This is an episode for anyone who has ever stayed up until 2 a.m. trying to fix something with their partner and wondered if there was a better way.Key TakeawaysWinning the argument is not the same thing as being right about the relationshipGiving your partner time to process is not waiting. It is participating.A relationship is not something you find. It is something you build with someone who wants to build with you.Repair is more important than resolve. You can go to bed without solving it and still be okay.Protecting your time together matters more than filling your calendar with activityThe best relationships keep evolving their sound. What worked five years ago may not be the song you need now.Constraints (kids, time, fatigue) can actually sharpen how a couple communicates, not just limit itVulnerability is daring to be fully honest with someone, not just showing them the version of yourself you think they wantGuest InfoRon (Catrina's husband): Producer and host of Covers on the Spot, a YouTube music show where bands cover a song they have never heard in a single day. Jason Fraley marks the one-year anniversary of Ben Folds resigning as Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra after Donald Trump's Kennedy Center takeover, sparking a chain reaction of artist cancellations. Folds joined the show in 2018 to discuss the launch of his Kennedy Center series "Declassified," pairing the NSO with popular musicians like Sara Bareilles and Jon Batiste. We're replaying it today as a reminder of all that was lost and could be again. (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")
For our first episode of 2026 we're back in relatively recent times (although longer ago than you'd expect 2010 to be!), where we discuss our favourite songs of the year, including Electropop bangers, Blackened prog, & hour long noise jams, plus unexpected jazz appreciation, Beautiful baritone vocals, and the best mispronounciation of a member of Sigur Rós I've ever heard... We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Agalloch, S. Carey, Caribou, Clever Girl, El Goodo, Everything Everything, The Fall, Fear Factory, Foals, Ben Folds and Nick Hornby, Goldfrapp, Gorillas ft Gruff Rhys and De La Soul, John Grant, Grinderman, Ihsahn, ILIKETRAINS, Jónsi, Kayo Dot, LCD Soundsystem, Liars, Linkin Park, Massive Attack, Merzbow, Dan Michaelson, The National, Red Sparowes, Robyn, Teenage Fanclub, Terror, & Warpaint Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/50k4w0QBaammhPgSCnUj0A?si=05cc225aed9d4e12Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

A surprise not-totally-festive edition of Radio Clash, where I talk about a bird I think about a lot (the lost Kauaʻi ʻōʻō bird – apologies for the transliteration but those special symbols will likely gum up the works in the feed and tags) and what Christmas means to me now… I play some new and old mashups and original music – some of which is my favourites of the year, but mostly older since I don’t listen to music in the same way anymore. Loving the new Saint Etienne and Lily Allen albums though, and K-Pop Demon Hunters (DERPY 4EVAH!) and new-ish music from B. Dolan, Hallmighty and Lankum. Buckingham Nicks album gets a timely re-release (are they talking again?) so talk about that and the legendary Coffee Plant demos – and visit Aidan Moffat and RM Hubbert’s Christmas Ghost Stories album…and play the last of my choices from Tom Rasmussen’s amazing Body Building album. And some festive? festering? tracks that have been on ice stuck at the North Pole since Xmas two years ago. Joy to the world and all that, there’s a theme about wanting 2026 to be a lot less shit…but not that hopeful, concentrating on what Xmas is supposed to be about, rather than all the capitalism, food and tradition. In this episode of Backstage Bay Area, host Steve Roby interviews Ben Folds, the pianist, songwriter, and arts advocate who has spent three decades balancing sharp, story-driven pop songs with orchestral ambition. Fresh off the release of Ben Folds Live with the National Symphony Orchestra and deep into his work on the new holiday album Sleigher, Folds discusses what it means to keep art alive in a noisy, distracted culture. The conversation shifts from his years at the Kennedy Center to the details of writing for orchestra, from the small dramas within songs like “Christine From The Seventh Grade” and “But Wait, There's More” to the quirky, reflective world of his upcoming Christmas shows at SFJAZZ. Along the way, Folds explores his long-standing Keys For Kids initiative and explains why access to instruments and music education still feels crucial to him.• How Ben Folds thinks about moving between rock clubs, concert halls, and orchestras without changing the core of his songwriting.• The story behind “Christine From The Seventh Grade” and why some songs invite a full orchestral treatment while others do not.• Why “But Wait, There's More” became a centerpiece about information overload, conspiracy thinking, and the carnival atmosphere of modern media.• What Folds learned during his tenure as Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra and how that shaped his view of orchestration as storytelling.• How his Keys For Kids program puts instruments and lessons into the hands of young players, and why he sees creativity as a basic civic skill, not a luxury.• The ideas and scenes that shaped the Christmas album Sleigher, from collapsing inflatable Santas to the sense of Christmas as a personal time machine.• What to expect from his informal, story-rich holiday shows at SFJAZZ's Miner Auditorium with Lindsey Kraft, Ross Garren, and his touring band.• Ben Folds Live with the National Symphony Orchestra – new live album documenting two sold-out nights at the Kennedy Center.• “Christine From The Seventh Grade” – expanded from a studio track into a full orchestral narrative.• “But Wait, There's More” – from chamber piece to orchestral meditation on information overload.• Sleigher – Folds's offbeat, reflective Christmas album that anchors the SFJAZZ holiday shows.• Keys For Kids – his long-running initiative supporting access to instruments and music education.Ben Folds brings his holiday program to SFJAZZ's Miner Auditorium on Monday, December 8, and Tuesday, December 9, 2025.Both shows begin at 7:30 p.m. at Miner Auditorium in San Francisco.Tickets and full event details: https://www.sfjazz.org/tickets/productions/25-26/ben-folds/Ben Folds – official website: https://www.benfolds.comSFJAZZ event page: https://www.sfjazz.org/tickets/productions/25-26/ben-folds/Backstage Bay Area – more episodes and concert coverage: https://www.backstagebayarea.com

Mike Delevante recently released his debut album, September Days, on Truly Handmade Records, a label founded by Guy Clark LLC's board of directors (including Grammy-winning author, producer, and filmmaker Tamara Saviano, who fell in love with the album at first listen). Not many artists release their first solo record two decades after their debut album but that's the case for Delevante, who spent the 1990s recording and touring as half of trailblazing Americana duo the Delevantes with his older brother Bob. The duo's acclaimed releases on Rounder and Capitol records in that era made a splash — Long About That Time (Rounder) was the first #1 debut album on Gavin's newly created Americana radio chart —and found them touring with like-minded artists including John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Levon Helm and others. So, while it's hardly the first musical endeavor for Delevante, September Days is an important step for a musician who'd never put the spotlight directly on himself, until now. Produced by Joe Pisapia, whose production credits include work with Ben Folds, Guster, k.d. lang and many others, the album's shimmering guitars and instantly memorable melodies recall some of the 90's best guitar pop artists (Matthew Sweet, Freedy Johnston, Ron Sexsmith, The Jayhawks and more). That decision was a long time coming. The Delevante brothers were New Jersey natives who've made Nashville their home since the ‘90s, along with frequent collaborator and co-producer, Garry Tallent of the E Street Band. Mike had shifted gears, focusing on visual arts. Both he and his brother had studied art in college, with Bob also turning more toward visual projects in the 2000s, but Bob had also made three solo records along the way. It was Tallent who got the brothers back into music. He'd enlisted them to sing on his 2019 solo album More Like Me, then invited them to be part of a live show he was doing in Asbury Park with Southside Johnny and special guest Bruce Springsteen. They had such a blast that “I felt myself getting pulled back into it,” Mike says. The result was 2021's A Thousand Turns. Its instantly appealing melodies and trademark sibling harmonies were a welcome return to form for the duo, whose mix of country and rock flowed naturally from brothers who came of age in New Jersey before moving to Nashville.https://www.instagram.com/michaeldelevante/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/mike.delevante/https://mikedelevante.bandcamp.com/album/september-days"Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/@treymitchellphotography @feeding_the_senses_unsensoredfacebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographyftsunashville@gmail.com

Ben Folds turned wit, heartbreak and a piano into pure rock magic. He shares the songs that inspired him.

Witt's previous album, Revisionary History, was produced by Ben Folds. Her newer records include "The Conduit" in 2021 and "Witness" 2023. Ben tells us about living the rock star life whilst traveling around Japan with Sean Lennon, Sophia Coppola, Spike Jones, and the Beastie Boys; how magic timing led to being offered the headline slot at Coachella with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller only to have one of his bandmates turn it down; and how his song “We're All In This Together” became the theme song for COVID quarantine. Ben Folds has been an influential artist on me for as long as I have had my own musical identity. I have been able to follow his work to see his growth as a musician, changing and evolving over time. There was never a moment when I thought I would be sitting in a virtual room with him, having a conversation about his current lane of music and how he doesn't really have anyone else like him. We discussed how he approached another outing with Snoopy and the gang with Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical. Listen below or anywhere you get your podcasts! About Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical This summer, celebrate the joy and magic of summer camp and the importance of preserving what you love. Charlie Brown loves camp and is determined to make his final year special, but Sally – a first-time camper – is nervous and skeptical of the new and unfamiliar place. While everyone settles into camp, Snoopy and Woodstock discover a treasure map that takes them on a wild adventure nearby. One morning, the Peanuts gang learns that their beloved camp is shutting down because there are fewer campers joining each summer. The news especially saddens Charlie Brown, who feels hopeless about losing a place that has meant so much to him and his friends. Meanwhile, on their adventure, Snoopy and Woodstock find the sought-after treasure chest, but are quickly disappointed when they discover it's not riches, but instruments and photos from past summer concerts held at the camp. Newly inspired, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang use the treasure to host their own concert to save the camp. Featuring original music by Emmy Award-nominated composer Jeff Morrow and Emmy-nominated singer, songwriter, composer, and New York Times bestselling author Ben Folds, the latest special under the acclaimed “Snoopy Presents” banner by Peanuts and WildBrain for Apple TV+ marks the first Peanuts musical in 35 years. Produced for Apple TV+ by Peanuts and WildBrain, “Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical” is directed by Erik Wiese and is written by Craig Schulz, Bryan Schulz, and Cornelius Uliano. Executive producers are C. Schulz, B. Schulz, Uliano, Paige Braddock, Josh Scherba, Stephanie Betts, and Logan McPherson.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a couple of guys who found huge followings—on the internet and elsewhere—in different ways, but with similar outlooks: Adam Met and Julian Shapiro-Barnum. Met is one-third of the brother band AJR, who've found massive pop hits over the past decade with cheeky but sometimes deceptively deep songs like “Bang” and “World's Smallest Violin.” Perhaps those more into the indie-adjacent world have heard their collaborations with Weezer. But for purposes of this conversation, Met is wearing one of his many other hats, which include Columbia professor, non-profit founder, and as of this week, published author. He just released his first book, AMPLIFY: How to Use the Power of Connection to Engage, Take Action, and Build a Better World, As you may have guessed from the title, it's about action and advocacy, including in the area of the climate crisis, for which Met is an ardent activist. He casually mentions hanging out with Al Gore here, which may be a Talkhouse first. The book aims to provide strategies for folks who want to do their part, which is a noble cause if you ask me. It features pop-culture names like Ben Folds and Jim Gaffigan, in addition to folks more known in the activism world. It's out now. The other half of today's conversation is Met's pal, comedian and internet personality Julian Shapiro-Barnum. An inquisitive guy by nature, Shapiro-Barnum recorded a series of internet videos over the years that were largely conversations with regular people, and during the pandemic he hit on the idea of chatting with children about how they manage to stay positive when everything seems so crazy. That idea became the very popular series Recess Therapy, which is as charming as it sounds—and, it should be noted, launched the “corn kid” into internet fame. These two jump right into a lively conversation about how music and advocacy can go hand in hand, about Julian's various shows, including Recess Therapy and Celebrity Substitute, and lots more. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Julian Shapiro-Barnum and Adam Met for chatting. Music streaming services like Spotify offer huge libraries of songs and albums—with recommendation engines that can feel unadventurous and repetitive. On this episode of How To!, Carvell Wallace welcomes online tastemaker and podcast host Derrick Gee to discuss the shortcomings of music streaming algorithms. And, they sit down with R.J. and Brie—two music fans from different generations—to offer up tips for finding hidden gems and obscure jams that might reinvigorate your own music-seeking journey.
