What does it take to move from mere survival to building a life of purpose, impact, and lasting success? In this episode of The Power of After, we explore the extraordinary journey of Charles van Kessler—a man whose life began in unimaginable hardship during World War II, surviving the Holocaust. After losing his entire family as a toddler and surviving years of severe malnutrition, orphanage life, and even the streets of Amsterdam, Charles made a promise that if he survived, he would dedicate his life to helping children facing similar suffering. Decades later, that promise became a mission-driven business and nonprofit dedicated to serving children in desperate situations. But this story is about more than survival—it's about resilience, discipline, and the principles that helped Charles remain mentally sharp, purpose-focused, and determined through every season of life. We'll discuss how those principles became the foundation not only for personal healing, but for building a business that fuels a greater mission. In this episode, we dive into the story of Mary and unpack what it really looked like for her to say a wholehearted “yes” to God. We talk about how Mary responded with trust instead of fear when the angel Gabriel told her she would carry Jesus, and how her curiosity and surrender opened the door for God to move in miraculous ways. From the stable in Bethlehem to the foot of the cross, Mary's life reminds us what it means to faithfully follow Jesus through the beautiful, confusing, ordinary, and heartbreaking moments. We also get super honest about the tension of trusting God when life feels unclear. From navigating relationships and fear to letting go of control and choosing faith over anxiety, we reflect on how Mary continually brought her heart to God instead of running from Him. If you're in a season where you're asking God for clarity, courage, or deeper trust, we hope this conversation leaves you feeling encouraged to lean in closer and say yes to wherever He's leading you. Renaissance English History Podcast: A Show About the Tudors
London, summer 1563. The city sounds wrong. The market stalls have gaps. And then you notice the door across the street — a blue cross painted on it, and a man standing outside who wasn't there yesterday. The plague is back. Today we're going street level into the Tudor plague years. What it actually felt like to live in London when the epidemics hit, what ordinary people did to survive, and three specific summers — 1563, 1593, and 1603 — that each killed somewhere between one in eight and one in three Londoners. We also get into what the Tudor government actually did about it (more sophisticated than you'd think), the plague doctors and their beaked masks, the quacks selling dried toads and unicorn horn, and the parish searchers — older women whose job was to examine bodies and determine cause of death, and who are almost entirely invisible in the historical record. Oh, and Elizabeth I had a gallows erected at Windsor to hang anyone who followed her from London. Very her. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Irish novelist has always been open to where life can unexpectedly take him, and the excitement that comes with that kind of freedom.Colm Toibin's first big move was from rural Ireland to Dublin after his father died when he was young. Then, it was off to experience the wild hedonism and sexual liberation of post-Franco Spain, a pleasant shock after needing a prescription to buy condoms in Ireland.Since then, he's journeyed to Sudan, Los Angeles, New York and beyond.Wherever Colm goes, he keeps a running list in his head of tiny details — observations of seemingly mundane encounters, an offhand comment or the cut of a lady's suit on a train.Every now and then, these details bubble up in Colm's memory and another of his well-loved novels, like Brooklyn, Nora Webster or The Master, is born. This episode of Conversations was first broadcast in May 2025, the producer was Meggie Morris and the Executive Producer was Nicola Harrison. It explores film adaptations, death of a parent, grief, Ireland, homophobia, growing up gay, Catholicism, epic adventure, John Crowley, Nick Hornby, Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Julie Walters, Dublin, immigrant experience, the Irish immigrant experience, family separation, origin stories, falling in love, books, writers, novels, life-story, family dynamics, reflection, loss, funny, comedy, repression, orgies, condom prescriptions, journalism, foreign correspondents.Colm's latest novel Long Island is published by Pan MacMillan. To binge even more great episodes of the ‘Conversations podcast' with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. This week's guest is the delightful, talented Rubie Gallagher. Rubie is an illustrator and micro flower farmer, who met Emily when she and her husband Max took a Calm Birth class ahead of their first child. After an accident in 2019, Rubie she spent time in rehabilitation at the Royal Talbot Rehab Centre in Melbourne which our recent guest Steven Wells created. The two crossed paths there during Rubie's rehab. Since her accident, Rubie and her husband, along with some very helpful friends, have worked together to create Rubie's Flower Farm, a micro farm growing flowers for florists, DIY buckets and edible flowers out of Mount Rumney just outside of Hobart. Rubie talks about memories from the rehab garden, what led her to create her farm, how gardening with a kid is bloody hard, and how she deals with the cold weather (hint: she draws). We talk about improving soil, taking cuttings, sneaking cuttings and not sweating the small stuff. Before we get to this great chat with Rubie, we're talking about geraniums, using kids to get away with things, roses in abundance, Elephant Garlic, Helen Goh's Pear & Caramel Self Saucing Pudding in the Good Weekend. Rubie recommends the following books during her chat: Phosphoresence, by Julia Baird If Women Rose Rooted, by Sharon Blackie "Grass is going to grass, and weeds are going to weed." - Rubie Gallagher

Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks, the podcast that explores how music can lift us out of the darkness and into hope. I'm your host, James Cox, a lifelong music‑lover who's turned his own struggles with depression into a mission: to prove that a good song can be a lifeline. In today's episode we sit down with Mark Anthony, a country‑singer‑songwriter‑producer from Franklin, Tennessee, whose career spans three decades, dozens of original songs, and a relentless DIY spirit. Mark shares:The pulse of Nashville today – from the honky‑tonk bars on Broadway to the sprawling venues that have turned the city into a “party capital.”The birth of the Mark Anthony Ensemble – how a 30‑year catalog of songs evolved into a live‑show that blends acoustic intimacy, rock‑driven energy, and unexpected genre twists.A behind‑the‑scenes look at independent artistry – why he signed with the indie label Iron Gate Records, the lessons of releasing music under a band name, and the realities of recording remotely with studio musicians.Songwriting secrets – why Mark writes melodies first, how he crafts tracks like “Always,” “Dance Until Dawn,” and the breakout single “Running Away,” and what it feels like to perform those lyrics live.Music as medicine – his belief that songs born from real life pain can bring hope to listeners on the brink, and his faith‑driven mission to give people a reason to keep listening.Whether you're a fellow musician navigating the indie landscape, a Nashville fan craving authentic stories from the city's evolving music scene, or simply someone looking for a reminder that music really does speak when words fail, this conversation is packed with honest anecdotes, practical tips, and a whole lot of soul.Grab your headphones, settle in, and let Mark's journey remind you why the right chord can change a life.

Balance is a habit, not a short term cureIn a culture that prioritizes the high-stakes thrill of the "hustle," we often treat balance as a temporary emergency measure rather than a sustainable foundation. Kent and Caanan explore why we tend to abandon the very habits that make us feel human the moment we find our rhythm. This episode breaks down the necessity of maintenance and why running toward what works is the key to building a life you don't need a break from. From “surviving” a sudden earthquake warning in California to navigating the pitfalls of being overly career-identified, this conversation shifts the focus from "curing" burnout to maintaining a consistent, satisfying hum. Whether you are tweaking your fitness routine or reassessing your professional identity, learn how to build guardrails that keep you balanced without losing the excitement of novelty. CHAPTERS:(00:00) Why are we still doing that?(00:52) Mind Share: Surviving a California earthquake warning(03:41) Maintenance: The third pillar of balance(07:44) Chasing the thrill vs. embracing the "hum"(10:53) Novelty within a balanced baseline(12:10) Fitness evolution: From hiking to mobility(15:32) The trap of being career-identified(19:40) Worth the Time: Barre classes KEY TAKEAWAYS:Habit over Cure: Balance should be treated as a daily baseline rather than a "snapback" recovery from burnout. The Power of the Hum: True satisfaction comes from the steady "hum" of maintenance, which provides the safety to experiment with new things.Self-Knowledge is Vital: You cannot determine what works for your life if you do not first understand how you work fundamentally. On this episode of The Cooligans, Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros dive into the early MLS season and ask a big question: are LAFC already pulling away from the rest of the league? With Vancouver and Inter Miami chasing close behind, the guys break down whether anyone can keep up with LAFC's dominant start or if we're witnessing the beginning of another runaway season. Across the Atlantic, Liverpool's frustrating habit of dropping points late in matches continues, raising questions about whether new manager Arne Slot deserves some blame. The hosts also take a look at Pep Guardiola and whether his legendary run with Manchester City F.C. might finally be losing its edge. Meanwhile, Chelsea F.C. receive what feels like a light punishment for breaking Premier League financial rules—did they get off too easy? Plus, the guys fire off quick reactions to some of the week's strangest and funniest football moments: Erling Haaland blasting a shot straight into someone's face, Chelsea's awkward pre-game huddle, the latest United States Men's National Team World Cup kit reveal, and the big question facing Orlando City SC—who should be their next head coach? Patrick Champion grew up in Florida in what most people would consider a good family, but as a teenager he began getting into trouble, running away from home, and pushing boundaries his parents didn't know how to handle. Eventually they made a decision that would change the course of his life forever. In the middle of the night, Patrick was kidnapped from his home and transported to Tranquility Bay in Jamaica, one of the most controversial programs tied to the troubled teen industry. What was supposed to be discipline quickly turned into something much darker. Patrick spent nearly a year inside the program where he says he experienced abuse, neglect, extreme punishments, and psychological control while being cut off from the outside world. The experience left deep scars that followed him long after he returned home. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, Patrick shares what really happened inside Tranquility Bay, how that experience derailed his life, led him into addiction and crime, and eventually resulted in a 10-year prison sentence in Florida. _____________________________________________ #ianbick #lockedinpodcast #tranquilitybay #troubledteenindustry #prisonstory #truecrimepodcast #kidnappedteen #prisonsurvival _____________________________________________ Connect with Patrick Champion: Instagram: @championfamily2020 YouTube: @UrFriendlyFelon Tiktok: @lastnamechampionnn _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Kidnapped in the Middle of the Night 03:01 Childhood Trauma and Family Turmoil 08:00 Growing Up in a Broken Home 13:00 School Trouble and Behavior Issues 19:00 My Reckless Teenage Years 26:59 Running Away and Living with My Dad 34:00 The Plan to Send Me Away 38:38 How I Got Sent to Tranquility Bay in Jamaica 45:11 Arriving at Tranquility Bay Teen Program 51:00 Surviving Tranquility Bay and the Troubled Teen Industry 01:03:00 Trying to Work the Program and Planning Escape 01:13:00 Restraints, Isolation, and Punishment 01:23:00 Losing Hope Inside Tranquility Bay 01:27:00 Returning Home After the Program 01:32:00 The Downward Spiral to Prison 01:41:00 Prison vs Tranquility Bay: What Was Worse? 01:51:00 Rebuilding Life After Prison 01:57:00 Recovery, Support, and Healing 02:00:00 Moving Forward and Helping Others Learn more about your ad choices. What happens when the people meant to protect you become the ones you have to run from?In this raw and deeply personal episode of the Rollercoaster Podcast, I sit down with Willie Wolfgramm to uncover a story of survival that most people wouldn't make it out of. Willie takes us inside the darkest corners of his past: being thrown down stairs by a drunken stepfather, being chased through a field by a truck, and the crushing weight of a culture that told him showing emotion was a fatal weakness. We dive deep into the day he lost his mother to cancer at 17 and the decade-long spiral into addiction and homelessness that followed. This conversation is about childhood abuse, grief, the cycle of trauma, and the miracle of finding a path forward when you've hit absolute rock bottom. If you've ever felt like you weren't enough, Willie's transformation is your wake-up call.Watch now and share this with someone who needs to feel less alone.Key Moments:0:00 I Watched Him Beat My Mother4:05 The Beliefs I Had to Unlearn6:40 My Earliest Memory of Abuse9:04 Running Away to Survive Another Day11:08 Chased Down by a Truck in a Field13:59 Contemplating the Road to End the Pain18:51 Breaking the Cycle with My Own Kids21:29 How Childhood Trauma Shows Up in Marriage24:58 Meeting Wayne: What a Real Man Looks Like28:45 Moving in While My Mom Fought Stage 4 Cancer32:36 Your Mom Passed Away This Morning34:54 Walking into a House That Felt Cold38:09 Just Keep Moving. To my committed followers, I have been distracted from doing the thing I love, which is this podcast. Please extend some grace:) Here is the truth, I figured since I didn't drop a new episode a few months in a row, that it didn't matter if I ever recorded another one. I was consumed and allowed so many other things to dictate my time and priorities, while completely losing focus. Imposter syndrome set in too; THEN, in the span of one week, two women wanted to know when I was recording the next one, they actually listened to it and looked forward to it. Thank you to those women, you might know who you are. It only takes one to set you straight:) Here is my question to you: what have you stepped away from what you enjoy, because you have allowed other people's priorities to override yours?? OUCH!1) Identify what's holding you back and take action.2) Practice Presence over Pre-Occupation3) Surrender to gain controlThank you for tuning in. In this reflective and deeply honest episode, we share two recent experiences that reveal a powerful common theme: learning to trust your intuition and stop running from what feels uncomfortable.Lenka opens up about the first time in over a year of van life that she chose to move from a park-up spot because something simply felt “off.”Despite no obvious danger, circling cars and lingering strangers triggered her gut instinct, and instead of overriding it, she listened. The result? A reminder that safety and peace of mind matter more than logic or convenience. At the same time, Natalie shares how attending a shadow-work workshop in Johannesburg forced her to confront emotional triggers she may have been carrying for years.Returning home has stirred old patterns, raising a deeper question: is she moving toward something new or running away from unresolved baggage?Together, we explore the difference between escape and evolution, the courage it takes to face your “shadow side,” and why ignoring what's under the carpet never truly works. This episode is a gentle but powerful reminder: trust your gut, stop overriding your inner voice, and recognise that growth often begins where discomfort lives.

When asked what his parents did, Atlantic CEO and competitive marathoner Nicholas Thompson had a stock response. "My mother's an art historian at Babson," he would answer, "my father runs a male brothel in Bali." Thompson's new best-selling autobiography, The Running Ground, is an extended version of his extraordinary family history, focusing on the dramatic fall from grace of his Rhodes Scholar father, W. Scott Thompson. The confessional is partly a discourse on running — a discipline that the father passed down to the son. But it's also a meditation on parenting. So was his father a good dad? "If the standard is whether you go bankrupt, lean upon your children, ask them to perform bigamist weddings, threaten to kill yourself, blackmail them, then no," Nick Thompson reflects. "If the standard is does he love you every day, then yes."Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Sonny Von Cleveland opens up about serving nearly two decades in prison and the harsh realities of being young, white, and unprepared for prison life. Pulled into violence and survival politics at an early age, Sonny breaks down what it really takes to make it through long prison sentences, the fear, the mistakes, and the lessons learned the hard way behind bars. He speaks candidly about navigating race, identity, and power inside prison, how incarceration forced him to confront his past, and the mindset shift that ultimately saved his life. Today, Sonny has transformed his story into purpose as a speaker, mentor, and community leader, proving that even the darkest chapters don't have to define how the story ends. _____________________________________________ #PrisonSurvival #MichiganPrison #PrisonLife #TrueCrime #LifeInPrison #PrisonStories #SurvivingPrison #incarceration _____________________________________________ Connect with Sonny Von Cleveland: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sonnyvonclevelandofficial/ Website: https://www.sonnyvoncleveland.com/ _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 First Days in Prison: Shock, Fear, and Survival 02:00 Growing Up in the Midwest Before Prison 06:40 Family Trauma, Abuse, and a Broken Childhood 12:00 Surviving Abuse and Learning to Cope 17:00 Running Away, Street Life, and Early Crime 21:00 The Road to Prison: Charges, Conviction, and Sentencing 24:40 Entering Adult Prison for the First Time 26:00 Prison Violence, Gangs, and Losing Innocence 31:30 Regret, Lost Youth, and Missed Chances 35:40 Solitary Confinement, System Failures, and Mental Survival 41:00 Release, Reoffending, and a Second Prison Sentence 46:00 Life After Release: Family Conflict, Crime, and Betrayal 52:00 Solitary Confinement, Transformation, and Forgiveness 59:00 Self-Reflection, Growth, and Mental Survival in Prison 01:03:00 Teaching Others, Service, and Finding Purpose Behind Bars 01:09:00 Leaving Gang Life and Choosing a Different Path 01:14:00 Reentry After Prison: Starting Over From Nothing 01:19:00 Using His Story to Help Others Avoid Prison 01:22:00 Final Advice, Redemption, and Life's True Purpose Learn more about your ad choices. Devin Prince grew up in Toledo, Ohio, and became a father at just 17 years old. Struggling to provide, he turned to selling drugs — and soon fell into addiction himself. What started as a hustle spiraled out of control when a robbery gone wrong forced him to flee, landing him on Toledo's Most Wanted list. While on the run, he became involved in a scam and later continued dealing drugs in Virginia, where he was eventually arrested and sentenced to three years in state prison. But in a shocking twist, luck was on his side — the robbery case that once had him labeled one of Toledo's most wanted fell apart, giving him an unexpected second chance. In this episode, Devin opens up about teenage fatherhood, drug dealing, addiction, being a fugitive, life in Virginia prison, and the moment everything changed. #MostWanted #TrueCrimeStory #FromFugitiveToFelon #PrisonLife #RedemptionStory #Toledo #CrimeDocumentary #podcastinterview Thank you to BLUECHEW for sponsoring this episode: Visit https://bluechew.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout to get your first month of BlueChew & pay five bucks for shipping.
