WE'RE BACK TO THE RE-WATCH THIS WEEK, REFINER!!Interviews are fun, and we love talking to the folks who make 'Severance' so incredible, but, we should never forget, this podcast was built on insanely detailed rewatches!! This week we are getting back into the S2 complete 'Severed' Re-watch with PART ONE of "Sweet Vitriol."We have not heard or seen anything from Harmony Cobel since her very scary parking lot run-in with Helena Eagan and her gorilla of a driver in the episode "Who is Alive?" Guess what??!! Harmony made the trip to Salt's Neck! In this episode, we catch up with her out on the road. She's headed back to where she grew up. She's needing some things she left at home back when she was whisked away to be a star at the Myrtle Eagan School for Girls. This time out we meet up with Hampton at the Drippy Pot. He's one of Cobel's oldest and dearest friends. He's also in the grip of a massive ether addiction, much like the rest of this tiny and dilapidated town. Oh, and if you're in need of ether, Hampton can set you up. As Sissy calls him, he's a 'huff peddler.'Oh, yeah...Sissy. We're going to meet Harmony's Aunt Celestine 'Sissy' Cobel. She's Harmony's mother Charlotte's sister. Sissy does NOT have a warm spot in her heart for Harmony, Hampton or this backwards little town on the seashore where she feels trapped by her beliefs. Or, maybe she does still feel some kinship with Harmony...she's just not willing to show it.It's time to hop in the VW Rabbit and head for the chilly coast of P.E. as we open the file called "Sweet Vitriol." Alex is an associate professor of psychology at Vanderbilt University where he heads the Maier Lab. His work in neuroscience spans vision, visual perception, and cognition, studying the neurophysiology of cortical columns, and other related topics. Today, he is here to discuss where his focus has shifted over the past few years, the neuroscience of consciousness. I should say shifted back, since that was his original love, which you'll hear about. I've known Alex since my own time at Vanderbilt, where I was a postdoc and he was a new faculty member, and I remember being impressed with him then. I was at a talk he gave - job talk or early talk - where it was immediately obvious how passionate and articulate he is about what he does, and I remember he even showed off some of his telescope photography - good pictures of the moon, I remember. Anyway, we always had fun interactions, even if sometimes it was a quick hello as he ran up stairs and down hallways to get wherever he was going, always in a hurry. Today we discuss why Alex sees integration information theory as the most viable current prospect for explaining consciousness. That is mainly because IIT has developed a formalized mathematical account that hopes to do for consciousness what other math has done for physics, that is, give us what we know as laws of nature. So basically our discussion revolves around everything related to that, like philosophy of science, distinguishing mathematics from "the mathematical", some of the tools he is finding valuable, like category theory, and some of his work measuring the level of consciousness IIT says a whole soccer team has, not just the individuals that comprise the team. Thomas Jefferson publishes "Logan's Lament" to argue against French theories of Americaninferiority, but in doing so, he canonizes the false accusation against the Cresap family. This sparks a bitter feud with Luther Martin, a Cresap in-law, who attacks Jefferson to clear the family name. Despite the controversy, the lament becomes a staple in American education through McGuffey Readers because its tragic final line, "Who is there to mourn for Logan?", resonates with the 19th-century political narrative of the "vanishing Indian" and the concept of the "noble savage."
