Vanessa Sinclair, PsyD is a psychoanalyst in private practice, who works remotely online with people all over the world. She is a founding member of Das Unbehagen: A Free Association for Psychoanalysis, sits on the International Advisory Board for the journal Psychoanalysis, Culture & Society, and is Editorial Advisor for Parapraxis Magazine.Vanessa and I talk about her upcoming course with Morbid Anatomy, “The Cut in Creation: Exploring the Avant-Garde, Dada, Surrealism, Modern Art, Noise Music, and Performance Art through a Psychoanalytic Lens.” This course will be taking place on Sundays, from May 25- June 15, and all classes will be recorded for those who can't make it to the live class for whatever reason. As the Morbid Anatomy website states: Drawing on the theories of a variety of psychoanalysts, including Freud, Lacan and Laplanche, the course will explore the long and rich relationship between psychoanalysis and the fine arts – from painting and music to poetry, collage, photography, film, and performance art, including the use of technology and body modification to explore aspects of identity, gender and sexuality. Through immersion in the work of these artists and psychoanalytic ideas, participants will walk away with a better understanding of the transformative process inherent of the act of creation itself, especially when used as a powerful disruption of narrative, and hopefully feel inspired themselves to create! In this discussion, Vanessa gives a sneak peek into each of the four parts of the course. Some highlights are: talking about the inspiration for the course;outlining the events that led to the creation of psychoanalysis as well as the avant-garde movement;expanding on the historical backdrop – what was happening during these years that created this paradigm shift;looking at the years leading up to WW1, and what was taking place then, focusing on psychoanalysis and the avant-garde art scenes;focusing on surrealism and later developments in experimental film, followed by some discussion on the Beat Poets, and outlining how these three are interconnected;focusing on the birth of pop art, and art as it moved from the galleries to the streets, as well as performance art that included the body as an important vehicle/tool of expression. We're diving into the wild world of art heists today, folks, and let me tell ya, it's a doozy! Picture this: it's October 15, 2012, and the Kunsthal in Rotterdam is buzzing with excitement over the Avant Garde exhibition showcasing the stunning Triton Foundation collection. But hold on to your paintbrushes, because that very night, two not-so-masterful thieves break in through a back door and make off with seven priceless masterpieces, including works by the likes of Picasso and Matisse! We're talking about a heist worth millions – and spoiler alert, it's not as slick as it sounds. As we unravel this tale, we'll explore the bumbling antics of the crooks, the frantic police investigation, and the shocking twist involving Radu Dogaru's mother burning the evidence in her bathroom heater – yeah, you heard that right! So grab your favorite beverage, kick back, and let's get into the messy, hilarious, and downright outrageous world of art crime!Picture this: it's the fall of 2012 and the Kunsthal in Rotterdam is buzzing with the excitement of the Avant Garde exhibition, showcasing the dazzling collection from the Triton Foundation. The mastermind behind this collection? None other than the fabulously wealthy Willem Cordia, a big-shot collector who's finally decided to reveal all his prized possessions. But hold onto your hats, folks, because just as this glamorous show is in full swing, disaster strikes! In the dead of night, two bumbling thieves break in through a back fire door and in a flash, they've made off with seven priceless pieces, including works by legends like Picasso and Matisse. Talk about a plot twist! So, what do the police do? They throw together a special task force of 25 detectives. That's right, folks, 25! They scour the scene for evidence, only to find minimal clues – just some fingerprints and a couple of footprints. They even check the security footage from the one camera in the gallery. Spoiler alert: the thieves look like they've just walked off a heist film set, moving faster than I can decide what to binge-watch on Netflix. But here's the kicker: as the police chase down leads and sift through over 100 tips, they realize they're up against a wall. The thieves' identities remain a mystery and it seems like the art heist of the century might just slip through their fingers. As the investigation unfolds, we dive deep into the world of art theft, where high stakes, big money, and a sprinkle of chaos reign supreme. The thieves turn out to be not the sophisticated criminals everyone assumed, but rather young Romanians dabbling in petty crime. It's a rollercoaster of a story that leaves us questioning not only the fate of the stolen artworks but the very nature of crime and consequence in the art world. Will the masterpieces resurface? Or have they vanished into the black market forever? This episode is a wild ride through theft, deception, and a touch of dark humor, making you wonder just how far people will go for a piece of art.Takeaways: The Kunsthal Rotterdam hosted the Avant Garde exhibition displaying the Triton Foundation collection, which got stolen during the event. Miley Cyrus just released three singles from her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful. Inspired by Pink Floyd's The Wall—specifically the 1982 feature film based on the album—Cyrus is not just sharing new music but a whole visual album, each song accompanied by a music video shot by director Panos Cosmatos. We last heard from Cyrus in 2023 with her massive smash "Flowers," which found the industry veteran finding some kind of inner peace. With her new songs, Cyrus is turning from healing herself to healing the world. She described the project as "a concept album that's an attempt to medicate somewhat of a sick culture through music." What does such an endeavor sound like? For one, a lot of surprising textures and collaborators: Shoegaze guitarists, jazz saxophonists, indie rock producers. At least, sounds that are surprising to those who only know Cyrus from "Flowers," "Wrecking Ball," and "Party in the USA." The true Miley stans expect the unexpected from an artist who, it turns out, has always been weird. The class features visuals, slides, and conversations, and has attracted a diverse group of artists, astrologers, and psychoanalysts. We highlight synchronicities, such as references to Freud's seminal dream “Irma's Injection” and Louise Bourgeois' spiders, and discuss the astrological significance of Neptune entering Aries. We discuss our upcoming workshop on Freud, Lacan, and Jung, and their relationship to art, where we'll explore dreams and life as creative expressions, and artworks as mirroring dreamwork. I also mention my upcoming classes on avant-garde art and psychoanalysis at Morbid Anatomy, and love for encouraging independent research and diverse perspectives. EMMALEA RUSSO is a writer. You probably all know the Black Square, a famous avant-garde painting that has radically changed the way we think about art. You've probably heard that this painting was created by Kazymyr Malevych, a “Russian painter”. But he was not Russian. He comes from Polish and Ukrainian descent, and the Ukrainian sources of his creativity and thinking are huge. In this episode, we will try to explain why it is important to look at Malevych as a Ukrainian artist. Our guest is Tetyana Filevska, a Ukrainian art historian, the creative director of the Ukrainian Institute, the country's major cultural diplomacy institution. She is interviewed by Tetyana Ogarkova, a Ukrainian literary scholar and journalist, an expert at the Ukraine Crisis Media Centre, and a lecturer at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. "Explaining Ukraine" is a podcast by UkraineWorld, a multilingual media outlet focused on Ukraine. UkraineWorld is run by Internews Ukraine, one of Ukraine's largest media NGOs. You can support our work at patreon.com/ukraineworld. Your support is crucial as our media increasingly relies on crowdfunding.

Once again, we're diving deep into the Esalen archives to share a fascinating historical recording - this one featuring electronic music pioneer Doug McKechnie. In the late 1960s and early '70s, Doug McKechnie was at the cutting edge of musical innovation, harnessing the revolutionary Moog synthesizer to create mesmerizing sounds. McKechnie was a contemporary of iconic figures like Wendy Carlos, known for the 1968 record "Switched-on Bach," a collection of pieces by Bach that were performed by Carlos on the Moog synthesizer. This album, which won a Grammy for Classical Album of the Year, played a key role in bringing synthesizers to popular music. McKechnie was also tied to the Grateful Dead, contributing to the band's most experimental album, "Aoxomoxoa.” He also played at Altamont, not really a feather in anyone's cap, but it shows the breadth of his growing popularity, and that of the Moog synthesizer. Moogs are characterized by distinctive electronic timbres and pulsating rhythms, as well as hypnotic sequences. They are very much a part of the psychedelia of the late 1960s, fitting right in with the oil light shows, pop art, face paint and neon day glo colors of the time. The Moog's ability to generate evocative psycho-acoustic atmospheres allowed musicians like McKechnie to tap into the exploration of internal landscapes that seemed to naturally occur during psychedelic adventures. The performance you're about to hear was recorded live at Esalen in the late 1960s, preserved for decades on half inch to reel, then dusted off, digitized, and transported to you via the magic of podcasting. So sit back, relax, and let the Moog take you on a trippy auditory journey to a pivotal moment in musical and technological history.

He was murdered by a teenage hustler in 1975. Or was he? Well, the murder part happened, but was it committed by the Freemasons? The Catholic Church? The Mafia? The Italian government? Konstrakta - Serbia 2022 (22:33), Charles Busch - Tale of the Allergist's Wife (43:42) In our Season 2 premiere we're tackling Eurovision and the Avant-Garde! First, we deep dive into the history of avant-garde Eurovision acts and discuss the tension between Eurovision's desire to appeal to the broadest possible audience and its elevation of some of the most aesthetically and politically innovative pop acts of the last half century. Then, we talk to Eurovision avant-garde darling Konstrakta, who took Turin by storm in 2022 with In Corpore Sano. Konstrakta walks us through her decades long career, where she has explored a modernity shaped by listlessness, spiritual consumerism and consternation about how it is that Megan Markle actually does get her healthy hair. Finally, we sit down with queer theater pioneer Charles Busch, whose play, Tale of the Allergist's Wife, is the longest running Broadway comedy in the last quarter century. We get his thoughts on Eurovision's most boundary pushing acts, as well as a wild story about an alluring, antique thieving count. Jeff Copeland is the author of the new book Love You Madly, Holly Woodlawn: A Walk On The Wild Side With Andy Warhol's Most Fabulous Superstar. By the mid-1980s, Holly Woodlawn, once lauded by George Cukor for her performance in the 1970 Warhol production and Paul Morrissey directed Trash, and the inspiration to the opening verse of the 1973 Lou Reed song “Walk On The Wildside”, was washed up. But a chance meeting with Copeland, who moved to Hollywood with dreams of ‘making it' as a television writer, changed the course of BOTH of their lives forever. This is the story of how an unlikely friendship between a young gay writer and a “mature” trans-gender actress and performer created the bestselling autobiography of 1991, A Low Life in High Heels. Chapter 1 What's No Wave by Thurston Moore"No Wave" by Thurston Moore is a profound exploration of an avant-garde music movement that emerged in New York City during the late 1970s. Characterized by its experimentalism, No Wave rejected the conventions of traditional rock and punk, opting instead for dissonance, noise, and a radical approach to sound. The genre was notably influenced by the harsh urban environment of New York, corresponding with the socio-political turmoil of the time. Artists associated with No Wave, such as Sonic Youth, Swans, and James Chance, embraced elements of free jazz, minimalism, and punk, creating an abrasive and confrontational experience.Throughout the text, Moore illustrates how No Wave was more than just a musical genre; it was also a cultural movement that intertwined visual art, film, and performance. He brings attention to key venues like CBGB and The Kitchen where No Wave artists showcased their work, and mentions the collaborative spirit among musicians, which was essential for the movement's evolution. The book maintains that No Wave's legacy continues to influence contemporary music and art, illustrating its lasting impact on the creative landscape.Chapter 2 No Wave by Thurston Moore Summary"No Wave" is a musical movement and artistic style that emerged in the late 1970s in New York City, characterized by its avant-garde approach to punk rock. It sought to break away from the conventional structures and sounds of typical rock music by incorporating dissonance, noise, and unorthodox performance styles. In his exploration of No Wave, Thurston Moore, the guitarist and vocalist of the iconic band Sonic Youth, reflects on the genre's influence on music and art. Moore emphasizes the genre's raw, experimental nature and its rejection of traditional melodies and harmonies. Bands associated with No Wave, such as Swans, DNA, and Mars, utilized feedback, atonality, and unconventional song structures to challenge listeners and redefine what music could be.The movement was not merely musical; it also encompassed visual art and performance, bringing together artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and performance artist Laurie Anderson. Moore discusses how No Wave represented a response to both the commercialization of the music industry and the cultural dynamics of New York City during that era, highlighted by tensions around race and politics. In summary, Moore's insights reflect a deep appreciation for the No Wave movement as a pivotal point in the evolution of experimental music, underscoring its legacy as a profound influence on future genres and artists who continue to push the boundaries of sound.Chapter 3 No Wave AuthorThurston Moore is an American musician, songwriter, and author, best known as the guitarist and co-founder of the influential alternative rock band Sonic Youth.
