During circle time, we enjoy singing and reciting nature-based, seasonal songs and poems. We start a new circle time at the beginning of the month, slowly learning the songs and poems together throughout the month. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays. After circle time, we listen to a story together. Ms. Becca tells us a Grandpa Ivy story the first week of each month. This week, we hear a pedagogical or teaching story about a little deer covered in white spots who wishes he were all brown like his parents and siblings. One full moon night, Grandpa Ivy is in his garden when he finds a fairy baby crying in one of his tulips. The fairy baby's mama was out dancing under the full moon and left her baby in Grandpa Ivy's garden, knowing she would be safe there. During circle time, we learn seasonal songs and poems together. This week, we learn new lines and words to our poems, making our circle time slightly longer than last week. We also practice a mindful breathing exercise. This month we are learning balloon breathing. After circle time, we hear a story together. The second week of each month, we hear a pedagogical or teaching tale. These stories address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. Today we hear the story of The Possum Who Didn't Like Anything New. Peter Possum didn't like anything new. He didn't enjoy meeting new people, playing outside when it was rainy, or going to new places. He would rather stay inside his mother's pouch. This is mostly what he did until, much to his surprise; he became too big for his mother's pouch. Peter then learns (with encouragement and support) that going to new places and meeting new people can be a lot of fun, even when it initially feels scary. Grandpa Ivy wakes up one summer morning and decides he is hungry for trout for dinner. So he takes his fishing rod and heads to the fishing hole, hoping to catch some trout. Grandpa Ivy casts his line three different times into the fishing hole. There is a tug on his line each time, but there isn't a fish when he reels it in. Grandpa Ivy doesn't catch any fish, but he does catch some pond grass, an old boot, and an old tire. Buster Bear wakes up in the forest, and all he can think about is having trout for breakfast, so he heads to Laughing Brook River to catch a fish. However, Buster Bear isn't the first one awake and trying to catch a fish for breakfast. Walking along the river, he surprises someone already there, causing them to drop their fish on the river bank and run away. As Buster Bear walks along, he finds a trout flipping and flopping on the sandy river bank! Today we hear the story of Wild Hawk Lake, based on a traditional tale from Japan. Long ago, a girl named Wilma lived at the foot of a great mountain. There had not been rain for a long time, and the farms in her village had become dry. The people were worried they wouldn't have anything to harvest. One day Wilma found a deep lake of fresh, clean water while exploring the mountain, and she knew this water could help her village. She found an overflow spot where she could bring the water to her village, but it was blocked by a stone gate secured with a lock! The second week of each month, we hear a pedagogical tale or a teaching tale. These stories address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. Today we hear the story of Shimmer and Glimmer's New Home, a story about separation or divorce. Shimmer and Glimmer live with their fishy parents in a rocky cove in the sea. One day a big storm comes to the cove and causes it to change. Now it is two rocky coves instead of one, with one parent fish living on one side and the other living on the other. Thankfully, there is still a long path connecting the two coves. One of the first things the fishies do in their new home is gather some soft seaweed and make a cozy bed nestled in the rocks. One by one, his friends join him on his raft until it is quite full! Today we hear the story of the Shoemaker and the Elves. An old shoemaker has enough leather left to make only one pair of shoes. He cuts out the leather one evening and sets it on the bench along with a thread and needle. Everything was in its place so he could start the work the next morning. As her room becomes messier, she becomes more unhappy and overwhelmed. Her Teddy Bear realizes what is happening and helps the little girl to clean her room. The second week of each month, we hear a pedagogical tale, or a teaching tale. These are stories that address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. This pedagogical tale is about three gnome brothers who live and work together inside a mountain. Two of the brothers work with hammers and picks, digging for gems and crystals. They are named Rickety-Tickety Gnome and Clickety-Clackety Gnome and together they make a lot of noise! The job of the third gnome, Rub-a-dub Gnome, is to polish the gems and crystals. Grandpa Ivy is watching sheep graze in the meadow by his house when he notices they are leaving little tufts of wool behind as they move through the meadow. There are little white dots here and there on the grass blades, bushes, and low-hanging branches! Grandpa Ivy collects the little bits of wool and brings them inside, where he uses soap, hot water, and a lot of hard work to make a little square of felt. He then leaves the felt to dry outside, where a little mouse finds it. Grandpa Ivy wakes to the smell of frost in the air and realizes he needs to finish harvesting his vegetable garden. After spending much of the day working, he takes a break to have some tea before he finishes harvesting. Then he falls asleep sitting on his porch! He sleeps until the sun sets, and the hedgehogs across the creek wake up for the night. They see Grandpa Ivy hasn't finished harvesting his vegetables and know a frost is coming. They work together to harvest the rest of the garden for him and, when doing so, find a rather large pumpkin--too large to move. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others. Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime. We enjoy singing and reciting nature-based, seasonal songs and poems during circle time. As the month progresses, we learn new song and poem verses. This week, we learn the final verses to our songs and poems for this month's circle time. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays. After circle time, we hear a story together. We listen to nature stories and folk tales during the third and fourth weeks of the month. Today, we hear the story of Little Child Knight. Becca adapted this story from an original tale by Suzanne Down (called Little Boy Knight). It is shared with permission. Learn more about Suzanne and her classes & books at her website: www.junipertreepuppets.com A young child loves to ride their pony and pretend to be a knight. One day they are riding out farther than before and come upon a castle. A king comes out of the castle and asks the young child if they have come to rescue the missing villager from the dragon. The child agrees to rescue the villager. The king gives the child a cape of golden light that imparts courage and strength. “Here's your cape of golden light; to give you courage, strength, and might.” The young child travels into the mountains and enters the dragon's cave. The dragon recognizes the young child's courage and seeks the child's understanding. The dragon is lonely and wants a friend to be with him through the long winter. Today, we hear the story of The Apple House. This is Becca's version of a popular autumn tale. This is a simple story about a Little Apple Tree who looks at the sky at night and wishes they were a star. Mother Earth reminds them to be patient and trust that they are special, too. As the apple tree grows bigger and changes and grows apples, they continue to wish they were a star, and Mother Earth continues to remind them to be patient and wait and see. Once the Little Apple Tree has ripe apples, Mother Earth slices an apple top from the bottom, showing the Apple Tree that there is a star inside each of their apples. We hear a pedagogical or teaching tale the second week of each month. These stories address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. Today, we hear the story of Sunday Bread. We start a new circle time at the beginning of the month, slowly learning the songs and poems together throughout the month. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays. After circle time, we listen to a story together. Ms. Becca tells us a Grandpa Ivy story the first week of each month. This week, we hear the story of Grandpa Ivy & the Apple Tree. Grandpa Ivy walks to the apple orchard to see Mother Apple Tree and harvest the first ripe apples of the season. He fills his basket with just enough apples for himself, leaving plenty on the tree for others.
