Vor einigen Jahren besuchte ich mit ein paar anderen jugendlichen Freundinnen eine gemeinsame Freundin in der Uckermark. Da Sommer war, kamen wir auf die Idee, draußen zu übernachten. Die besagte Freundin wohnte auf einem Freizeitgelände, das einen eigenen Seezugang besaß. Deshalb beschlossen wir, nicht einfach nur irgendwo zu übernachten, sondern mit dem hauseigenen Floß (etwa 3 x 3 Meter groß) ein Stück weit auf den See rauszufahren, den Anker zu werfen und dort mit Isomatten und Schlafsäcken unser Nachtquartier aufzuschlagen.Mitten in der Nacht wachte ich auf. Über mir sah ich den hell erleuchteten Sternenhimmel – so viele hatte ich in meinem ganzen Leben noch nicht gesehen. Dort, wo es keine großen Städte im näheren Umkreis gab und die Landschaft nicht »lichtverschmutzt« war, erstrahlten die Sterne in ihrem vollen Glanz.Vor ein paar Tagen las ich in der Bibel den Tagesvers, der mich an diese sternenklare Nacht erinnerte: »Er zählt die Zahl der Sterne, er ruft sie alle mit Namen.« Gott kennt jeden einzelnen Stern dieses gewaltigen Sternenmeeres mit Namen. Wie viel mehr kennt und sieht er jeden einzelnen Menschen? Sie und mich persönlich? Denn einen Vers vorher lesen wir: »Er heilt, die zerbrochenen Herzens sind, er verbindet ihre Wunden.« Der Vers bedeutet also noch viel mehr, als dass der große Gott nur wüsste, wie viele Menschen sich aktuell auf der Erde befinden. Denn er nimmt sich sogar jedes Einzelnen an und möchte die größte Wunde des Menschen heilen: die verloren gegangene Gottesbeziehung. Drei Mal die Woche gebe ich Nachhilfe in einer Berliner Grundschule. Lernförderung Deutsch und Mathe, um genau zu sein. Und jedes Mal, wenn ich den großen Schulhof am frühen Nachmittag betrete, fällt mir das fröhliche Treiben dort auf. Gefühlt sind alle Kinder immer und bei jedem Wetter draußen. Sie fahren auf ulkigen Sitzgefährten kreuz und quer, klettern oder spielen Stopptanz oder Seilspringen zu cooler Musik, für die die Erzieher sorgen. Mitten im fröhlichen Treiben sind immer auch 2 oder 3 Kinder die im Rollstuhl sitzen, selbst damit fahren oder von einem anderen Kind geschoben werden. Auch geistig behinderte Kinder sind dabei und mittendrin. Das erwähne ich gerade heute, weil hier in Berlin gestern der Weltgipfel für die Rechte von Menschen mit Behinderungen begonnen hat. Die Fläming-Grundschule hat Inklusion schon vorangebracht, lange bevor das Wort Gesellschaft und Politik erreicht hat. Sie ist eine vierzügige Grundschule mit besonderer pädagogischer Prägung, seit 1975 gibt es Integrationsklassen, in denen behinderte und nichtbehinderte Kinder gemeinsam unterrichtet werden; damit ist sie die erste Integrationsschule im deutschsprachigen Raum. Von den rund 590 Schülern haben etwa 10 % einen sonderpädagogischen Förderbedarf. Man fördert dort aber auch die Schüler und Schülerinnen, die ein besonders begabtes Verhalten zeigen. Hier gibts spezielle Kurse und Angebote. Und dass viele Kinder einen Migrationshintergrund haben, ist in einer Stadt wie Berlin ja klar. Inklusion und Diversität scheinen hier ganz wunderbar und mit großem Engagement aller Beteiligten, auch der Eltern, zu funktionieren. Thousands of people across the region remain without power in freezing weather, with some roads still blocked due to downed trees and powerlines. On Monday (March 31, 2025), Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Otsego, Oscoda, Montmorency, Presque Isle, Emmet, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Mackinac and Alpena counties in order to help with response and recovery efforts. Paul took time to talk to us after a day of helping neighbors clear debris.PHOTO: Eileen TusseyReleased by the Gaylord Tourism Bureau on April 1, 2025As you may know, Gaylord and much of northern Michigan was hit by an ice storm that started on March 29th. EPISODE 693: Behind the Mitten Road Trip -- Clare to LewistonIn this episode of "Behind the Mitten," hosts John Gonzalez and Amy Sherman celebrate a decade of exploring Michigan's hidden gems. They embark on a road trip adventure, visiting various local businesses, including Buccilli's Pizza in Clare, R & J's Best Choice Marketplace in Houghton Lake, and Jack's Place in Roscommon, where they highlight the importance of community and local flavors. Amy calls herself "a Feta girl" and wants to enter the annual contest in December to win a year's worth of Feta. Last year they sold 14,730 pounds of the cheese.Segment 3: A few years ago we traveled all over the state looking for great fish frys. We found one at Jack's Place in Roscommon, known for fresh Alaskan cod and a cool A-frame bar. The fish is never frozen and flown in every week. We stopped in again, only to discover that Amy happen to know new co-owner Jason Christensen, who is originally from Amy's hometown in downriver Detroit. We learned more about how Jason and his partner Ashley Reynolds came to own the bar. And of course, we had to try the fish again. It was fabulous. Segment 4: Another one of our favorite fish frys was at the Lewiston Hotel & Bar, and it, too has new ownership. It was our final stop for the show. We sat at the bar and talked to Troy Willett, who tells us how he and his wife, Crissy, bought the bar a few years ago and updated it with a new menu, including gyros, poutine, more Mexican food items and the "Lewie Burger," a half-pound cheese burger that has become a top-seller. But the perch fish fry still brings them in because it's still the same, Troy said. They also offer 12 modest, very clean hotel rooms, making it a great place to spend the night. November 24: Wer erinnert sich noch an die Rotationsmaschinen, die nachts beim Springer-Verlag, dem Heinrich-Bauer-Verlag, der Morgenpost liefen? Mitten in der Innenstadt, wo heute nur noch Büros sind? Hamburg ist in den 1970-er Jahren eine Hochburg der Verlage und Druckereien mit vielen Beschäftigten. Aber gleichzeitig zeichnet sich ein Umbruch in der Branche ab: die Einführung der elektronischen Textverarbeitung. In den Betrieben findet eine starke Mobilisierung für den Erhalt der Arbeitsplätze statt. Der Ortsvorstand der IG Druck und Papier befürchtet die Kontrolle zu verlieren und reagiert mit Gewerkschaftsausschlüssen. Insgesamt 28 Gewerkschafter werden von diesem Vorstand in den Jahren 1974 bis 1978 ausgeschlossen. Holger Artus, ehemaliger Betriebsrat bei der Hamburger Morgenpost, damals eine SPD-Tageszeitung, hat dieses unrühmliche Kapitel neu aufgerollt. Inzwischen hat sich der Vorstand der Nachfolgeorganisation, der Fachbereich Medien der Vereinten Dienstleistungsgewerkschaften verd.i, bei den Betroffenen entschuldigt. Auch gegen Agnes Handwerk wird damals ein Gewerkschaftsausschlussverfahren wegen angeblich heimlicher Videoaufnahmen eingeleitet. Die Vorwürfe erweisen sich als haltlos und das Verfahren wird eingestellt. In dieser Zeit entsteht die Videodokumentation „Gruner und Jahr rationalisiert“. It's a hodgepodge this week on Behind the Mitten, with stories coming at you from all over Michigan.We start off the show with Angie Quinn, the executive director of the Michigan Legacy Art Park, which is located at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville. We recently got to do a snowy hike through this very unique art experience, and interviewed Angie trailside afterwards. Spread out over thirty beautiful acres, the Art Park boasts two miles of hiking trails that take you around almost fifty different sculptures. The park has been leasing this space from the resort, but just last year Crystal donated the land to the organization permanently. It is a super cool way to experience art, you can enter the park from dawn to dusk, on foot, snowshoes or skis.Then we have a first on Behind the Mitten, as Amy interivews her husband Jerry Adams. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Jerry shares some of his former favorite haunts, and how they have changed over the years. With a daughter currently attending U of M, we visit regularly, and recently got to enjoy burgers and fries at Krazy Jim's Blimpie Burger, a favorite no matter when you graduated. Im Oktober 2023 wurde die Leiche von Christian Pilnacek, dem einst vielleicht einflussreichsten Mann in Österreichs Justizapparat, in der Donau gefunden. Für Polizei und Staatsanwaltschaft stand schnell fest, Pilnacek habe Suizid begangen. Der grüne Ex-Abgeordnete und Autor Peter Pilz hat in seinem Buch minutiös recherchiert, warum die offizielle Version vom Suizid des mächtigen Sektionschefs womöglich nicht stimmt. Pilz zeichnet Ungereimtheiten und Widersprüchlichkeiten bei den Ermittlungen des Todesfalls nach. Und er präsentiert zwei neue gerichtsmedizinische Gutachten, die unabhängig voneinander zu dem Schluss kommen, dass ein Suizid wenig wahrscheinlich ist. Denn Christian Pilnacek hatte Verletzungen am ganzen Körper, die womöglich auf Kampfhandlungen kurz vor seinem Tod hinweisen. Today, the association focuses on education, providing opportunities for cider makers at all levels—from home enthusiasts to large-scale producers. One of the recent big initiatives has been working with the Cider Institute, formely known as the Cider Institute of North America (CINA), to offer subsidized cider education. Michigan cider makers have benefited from foundational courses, cider guide certifications for taproom staff, and marketing efforts that drive cider sales across the state. Mapping Michigan's Cider Scene Michigan's unique geography, shaped by the Great Lakes, creates an ideal environment for growing apples. Many cider makers source their fruit locally, often within 30 minutes of their production sites. Here's how the cider landscape breaks down: To use this Hand Map – Hold up your left hand, palm facing outward, with fingers together and thumb extended—this mimics Michigan's Lower Peninsula, often called “The Mitten,” with Detroit near the base of the thumb and Traverse City near the tip of your pinky. Metro Detroit (Thumb region) – A hub for orchards and cideries, home to well-known producers. Southwest Michigan (Pinky side of the mitten) – A mix of wineries and cideries, taking advantage of the region's wine industry crossover. Cider Week Grand Rapids (May 9-17, 2025) – A week of cider-focused events, including pairing dinners, tap takeovers, and a board game night at House Rules in Grand Rapids. In this episode I have former guest Kendell Mitten back on the show. Kendell and I talk about several topics. We discuss some of the logistics of planning an out of state hunt, with particular focus on western hunts. We recap Kendell's deer season and discuss the trials and tribulations of a deer season.
