It's always a pleasure to get to go back to Muskegon, we just love this city located on the shores of Lake Michigan, and the very cool things that are happening here. On this episode of Behind the Mitten we'll introduce you to Skee town, and take you to cool places both old and new, hear all about one of the best Irish music festivals in the land, learn about a major art expansion, and eat some really good pizza. We kick off with the effusive Amber Mae Petersen, Marketing and Operations Manager for Visit Muskegon and her co-hort Lashelle Mikesell, Digital Marketing Coordinator. They give us a great overview of downtown, and the many nice changes that have been happening here, from businesses moving locations, to new ones opening up. One thing we mention is the beautiful Frauenthal Center, where they host the magical Singing Christmas Tree every year, plan ahead and get those tickets early.One of the largest, and best, Irish musical festivals in the country has happened for the last 25 years in Muskegon. The Michigan Irish Music Festival is happening September 11 through the 14th, and we have Morgan Witmer, the volunteer marketing coordinator for the festival on to tell us all about it. We were excited to learn that new this year there will be a Ceili (KAY-lee), which is a special Irish square dance that anyone can participate in. Organizers are pumped that on Saturday night, Skerryvore, a band from Scotland is coming for the first time. I'm excited to check out the Celtic Canines exhibit on Sunday, where I can meet (and pet!) all the breeds of traditional Irish dogs. There is also a cool Irish Instrument petting zoo on Sunday that sounds incredibly interesting. There are all sorts of Irish culture, food and drink classes as well, please be sure to register ahead of time. We have to give a shout-out to all everyone who gives thier time to this amazing event, it is entirely volunteer run.We've learned over the years that sometimes everyting just comes together, whether you planned it or not, and our time in Muskegon proved this once again. While recording at the new CORE Plaza, we realized that our friends from the Muskegon Museum of Art  were also in the house. So, we invited Kirk Hallman, the Executive Director, and Cathy Mott, Assistant Director to join us and give us an update on their major expansion. We had them on last year, so it was nice to hear that it has been an incredible journey, and that all of Michigan is lucky to have this resource.The CORE Plaza is a lovely new spot for Muskegon, and has the feel of a place you might find in a much larger city. Co-owner Troy Wasserman joins us to share how this historic building remodel came to be, shares the businesses that call CORE home, including the very fun Liquid Assests Bar that runs all down one side, and talks about his family's long history in Muskegon. In dieser Episode präsentiere ich meine ausführliche Rezension zu „Glasflügel“, einem fesselnden Krimi von Katrine Engberg, der aus dem Dänischen von Ulrich Sonnenberg übersetzt wurde. Die Handlung beginnt mit einem schockierenden Fund in der Fußgängerzone von Kopenhagen: Die nackte Leiche einer Frau liegt in einem Brunnen. Mitten in diesen düsteren Ermittlungen steht Jeppe Kørner, der mit dem Fall betraut wird, jedoch ohne seine Partnerin Annette Werner, die sich in der Babypause befindet. Die Dynamik zwischen den beiden ist spürbar, insbesondere da Annette trotz ihrer Auszeit das Geschehen teilweise beeinflusst. Die Ermittlungen führen Jeppe und seine Begleitperson Falk, einem etwas langsameren, übergewichtigen Polizisten, tief in die Abgründe des dänischen Gesundheitssystems. Hier treffen sie auf Patienten, die so viel Leid erlebt haben, dass sie zur Gefahr für sich selbst und andere werden. Während der Fall komplexer wird und schließlich eine zweite Leiche mit ähnlichen Verletzungen entdeckt wird, müssen Jeppe und Falk auch gegen die inneren Dämonen ihrer eigenen Leben kämpfen. Jeppe, der gerade erst wieder bei seiner Mutter eingezogen ist, ringt mit seinen eigenen Gefühlen und dem Wunsch nach einer stabilen Beziehung. Die Figuren sind authentisch und vielschichtig gestaltet, sodass Leser tief in ihr Leben eintauchen können. Insbesondere die Psychologin Esther de Laurenti und ihre Interaktionen mit dem Psychiater Peter Demant zeigen die Spannungen und Unsicherheiten im Umgang mit psychischer Gesundheit. Die Ermittlungen nehmen eine dramatische Wendung, als die Leiterin eines Heims und der Vater eines Suizidopfers im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchungen stehen. Dabei entwickelt sich eine packende Geschichte voller unerwarteter Wendungen, die den Leser bis zur letzten Seite in Atem hält. Ich teile auch meine persönlichen Gedanken und Empfindungen zu Engbergs Stil und den Entwicklungen innerhalb der Erzählung. Mit jeder Seite wird Kopenhagen lebendiger, und die Figuren kommen einem näher. Die Art und Weise, wie Engberg es schafft, eine düstere Atmosphäre zu erzeugen und gleichzeitig humorvolle Elemente einzuflechten, macht das Lesen zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis. Meine Begeisterung für die Reihe um Kørner und Werner wird deutlich, und ich finde, dass Engberg mit jedem neuen Werk noch besser wird. Abschließend gebe ich einen Ausblick auf die Verfügbarkeit des Buches, das in allen gut sortierten Buchhandlungen für 12 Euro erhältlich ist. Ich lade Sie ein, sich von „Glasflügel“ mitreißen zu lassen und die komplexe Welt der Ermittlungen in Kopenhagen selbst zu entdecken.

Warum man beim Warten auf eine Baugenehmigung auch mal ein Bücherregal sortiert, Brombeermarmelade einkocht und das Festivalbändchen nicht abnimmt – und wie Jens als ältester Nina‑Chuba‑Fan der Republik seine jugendliche Ekstase lebt. Diese Folge beginnt nicht mit Baufortschritt. Sondern mit Stillstand. Während irgendwo in einer Amtsstube vielleicht eine Baugenehmigung auf Antwort wartet, sagen Jens und Antje: Wir warten nicht einfach. Wir überbrücken – mit allem, was uns einfällt. Und mit Dingen, die vielleicht auf keiner Bau-Liste standen. Sie reisen quer durch die Republik, treffen alte Freund:innen, tauchen in Ausstellungen ein und tanzen bei Nina Chuba und Deichkind auf dem Highfield-Festival. Mitten drin: Jens – ältester Nina‑Chuba‑Fan der Republik, der sein Festivalbändchen trägt und trägt und trägt, bis es womöglich eines Tages zu müffeln beginnt – und damit beweist, dass Jugendlichkeit manchmal nur eine Playlist entfernt ist. Zwischen all dem philosophieren sie über Arbeitszeitgesetze, Kapitalismus und warum Urlaub eigentlich eine Investition in die eigene Batterie ist. Antje steht mit klebrigen Fingern beim Brombeereinkochen, sortiert endlich das Bücherregal (mit ChatGPT‑Genrelisten) und stellt fest: Selbst Paartherapie passt noch in diesen Sommer. Außerdem: Kaffeeglück bei Bohnenstolz in Arnstadt, und Jens, ganz versunken in die Wim Wenders-Welt in der Bundeskunsthalle Bonn. Peter Hostettler lebt seit Anfang Jahr im äussersten Norden von Piemont, nahe der Schweizer Grenze. 2016 kaufte der Berner historische Steinhäuser auf der verlassenen Alp Vegliana in der Walsergemeinde Rimella. Mit dem Ziel, dem Ort wieder neues Leben einzuhauchen. Mitten im wilden Herzen des Piemont, wo die Walser Kultur auf italienische Berglandschaft trifft, schreibt Peter Hostettler ein modernes Kapitel alpiner Wiederbelebung. Seit 2016 widmet sich der Berner mit Leidenschaft der verlassenen Alp Vegliana in der Gemeinde Rimella. Einem Ort, den die Zeit beinahe vergessen hatte: «Ich war schon immer fasziniert von der Gegend und den geschichtsträchtigen Steinhäusern aus vergangenen Zeiten.» Eigentlich wollte der 67-Jährige nur ein Haus erwerben. Mitten im wunderschönen Forst Grunewald, fernab des wilden Großstadtstreibens, befindet sich einer der kuriosesten Orte Berlins: der Selbstmörderfriedhof… Schaurig-schön ist er, umgeben von Bäumen und durch ein Holztor zugänglich. Für lange Zeit war es der einzige Ort in Deutschland, an dem unbekannte Tote und Selbstmörder ihre letzte Ruhe finden durften. In der Weimarer Republik hatte Selbstmord Konjunktur. Viele Menschen sind extra nach Berlin gefahren, um dort freiwillig in den Tod zu gehen. Wir sprechen mit Tina Knaus über die Entstehung des Friedhofs und einige besondere Todesfälle.
