Meggie’s ten years of drug use kept her in and out of jail. Without a life change, she’d soon return. Then she met Hans, a former addict who almost lost his hand when a vein ruptured due to his substance abuse. “That was the first time I cried out to God,” Hans said. God’s answer prepared him to be a peer specialist for an organization that coordinates recovery for jailed addicts. Called Stone Soup, the program is helping an American jail provide formerly imprisoned people with support to reenter their communities. Through the plan, Meggie moved into a sober-living house and has stayed sober. Hans now helps her and others with job placement, educational options, treatment, and family resources—a coordinated approach. The Bible describes the strength of wise partnering. “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Alone, however, “Pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up” (v. 10). Like the “Stone Soup” folktale, where a hungry traveler invites townspeople to each share one ingredient to make a delicious soup for all, the Bible confirms we’re stronger and better together (v. 12). God’s plan is for us to live in community, helping others and receiving help in return. That’s no fairy tale; it’s truth for life.
A European Folk Tale known as The Story of the Stone Soup has much to teach us about generosity. Scott explores this story in this episode, and then closes with a 3-minute guided meditation to help listeners apply the lessons to their lives.

Join Curt Jaimungal as he welcomes Harvard physicist Jacob Barandes, who claims quantum mechanics can be reformulated without wave functions, alongside computer scientist Scott Aaronson. Barandes' “indivisible” approach challenges the standard Schrödinger model, and Aaronson offers a healthy dose of skepticism in today's theolocution. Are we on the cusp of a radical rewrite of reality—or just rebranding the same quantum puzzles? As a listener of TOE you can get a special 20% off discount to The Economist and all it has to offer! In this episode, Katrina and Geoff talk about stone soup and the travels this story has gone on. This ATU 1548 tale might have started off as a story where a clever man does what he can to trick unsuspecting people out of their food and resources, but over time it has come to be a symbol of communities learning to come together in love to make sure that everybody has enough. Katrina and Geoff retell a couple stories that feature so called "clever men" who lie, cheat, and steal to illustrate what kind of company the story of Stone Soup kept in the ATU Index before launching into a retelling of this ubiquitous tale.
Pianist creates creative explorations There are plenty of jazz pianists around the country who don't take kindly to anyone talking during their performances. That's not the case for Daniel Kelly. On Saturday (Jan. 18), the Cold Spring resident will create a musical composition with children, on the spot, at the Butterfield Library - much like the classic story "Stone Soup," he says, but with melody, harmony and rhythm. "We'll have a drumbeat and a piano part, but I can play almost any instrument on my electronic keyboard, so there are endless variations," he says. "We will have an interesting song by the end." Last year, Kelly booked a series of monthly programs for adults at the library called Creative Explorations with Daniel Kelly & Friends. So far, he has held four sessions and will continue through June, then start again in the fall. These events are conversations, not concerts. "We're trying to get people actively involved in the creative process, but it's OK just to enjoy and absorb," he says. Vanessa Maldonado, the library's adult program coordinator, says, "This is less like a show and more like hanging out with your friends. Like with Mr. Rogers, having guests facilitates interaction. This is a great way to learn from local artists who share their talents and inspire others to say, 'I have talent, too.'" Last October, author and musician David Hollander joined Kelly to examine the connection between music and writing. After speaking about the rhythm of words in his sentences, Hollander and Kelly improvised on piano and guitar as audience members wrote poems or prose. People willing to read their work came onstage. Kelly also hosted singer-songwriter Dar Williams, exploring her creative process, playing some of her music and beginning to write a song with the audience. On Wednesday (Jan. 15), Kelly and Beacon-based singer Tara O'Grady turned stories from people's dreams into tunes on the fly. "Tara is lightning-quick writing solid lyrics," says Kelly. "There's so much local talent to draw from. It's astounding." Kelly moved to Cold Spring in 2013 and tours the world playing music, including a stint as a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department. In addition to implementing conceptual programs that blurred the line between art and community in Florida, Memphis and Wyoming, he books the acts at the annual Jazz at the Lake festival in Lake George. Kelly, who seeks to mash up art forms and find new creative approaches, forged a project, Shakespeare in Jazz: All the World's a Song, consisting of original tunes composed around short snippets of the Bard's most renowned lines. The goal, he says, is to view the language's nuance and meaning with a new sensibility. Indeed, the creative exploration on Feb. 12 will be Shakespeare and Music. Actor Sean McNall from Hudson Valley Shakespeare will perform monologues as Kelly improvises. Kelly's daughter, Sofia, 16, will sing and invite the audience to join in. In March, Kelly will jazz things up behind artist Ireena Gurvich as she creates a visual work. Art supplies will be provided, and attendees can create while Kelly tinkers at the keys. "It's such an amazing, engaging idea," says Maldonado. "You're not just sitting there listening passively - you're collaborating and helping to build a community connection around the arts." The Butterfield Library is located at 10 Morris Ave. in Cold Spring. Musical Stories for Kids with Daniel Kelly, which begins at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 18, is recommended for children ages 4 to 8.

Today's episode is incredibly special, and I'm so thrilled to share it with you. In this episode, I welcome back a former client, the amazing Jules Clancy, who was a part of my Marriage MBA program during the first round back in 2020. Jules is a food scientist turned cookbook author and certified cooking coach, teaching people to make simple, healthy meals with her app, Stone Soup, and through her podcast, Joyful Eating. She reached out to me recently with a beautiful update about her marriage, and her message truly felt like a rainbow after a storm. Today, Jules reflects on her journey through my Marriage MBA program, where she chose to focus on herself rather than traditional marriage counseling. She shares how doing this inner work changed her marriage profoundly, creating a relationship she's proud of today. Jules also talks about how learning to be on the same team as her husband strengthened not only their marriage but their family life as a whole, especially in their parenting. Just a few takeaways from our conversation include: How six months of coaching led to lasting changes that continue to benefit Jules's marriage years later Why regularly scheduled time with your honey is essential for keeping the connection strong The power of accepting your partner as they are and letting go of judgment My hope with this episode is that you'll feel really inspired and equipped with tangible tools to start creating positive change in your own relationship. Remember, it's possible to have what you want in your marriage—you just need the right tools, mindset, and support. Today we are going to Esperança-Condurú ecological corridor of Southern Bahia in Brazil to understand that we have a lot to learn from nature and from communities that have been organizing themselves in a natural and horizontal way. Paulo Sanjines Barreiro is an academic that studies how collective action of the local civil society organization ASMOBAN has improved critical life conditions in the Esperança-Condurú ecological corridor. An investigation for which he won Stone Soup´s Award on Research in Social Innovation 2023. Today, we talk about ecosystem governance, collective action and the values needed to make it happen. “An ecosystem is s a dynamic set of relationships that are collaborating towards self sustenance” - PauloIn this episode you will hear about:Passion for Nature and Community (05:00): The importance of having passion for nature, inspired by its connection to life and understanding oneself better through nature. Paulo tells us how his early childhood experiences near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia shaped a fascination with people living in sync with nature's rhythms, and more, shifted his career path to work closely with forests and communities, now residing in Southern Bahia, surrounded by nature.Impact on Health and Well-being (14:00): The interviewed experienced a health decline due to a fast-paced, goal-oriented lifestyle working long hours. Rediscovered healing through nature, relying on natural remedies and lifestyle changes to recover from gastritis. Emphasizes the importance of slowing down and prioritizing health in the context of nature's influence.Understanding Ecosystems (23:30): Ana and Paulo define ecosystems as dynamic relationships fostering self-sustenance, resilience, and the progression of life from basic to complex forms. The academic shared his studies of watershed ecosystems and recognized the challenge in translating ecological knowledge for effective human conservation.Human Ecosystems and Education (32:00): The conversation engages in policy analysis and evaluation for ecosystem governance in the tropics, focusing on collective action within communities. They advocate for a shift in educational paradigms, valuing traditional wisdom, contemplation, and a holistic view of life rather than practical utility.Observation, Policy Building, and Collective Intelligence (44:30): A description of observed community interactions, serves as a mirror, and engages in policy-building processes within local associations. To finish, he highlights the importance of collective intelligence in community development, emphasizing flexibility, adaptation, and a shared sense of purpose. This conversation beautifully unravels a journey from personal passion for nature to applying this passion in community-driven environmental governance, intertwining health, education, policy analysis, and the dynamics of collective intelligence within ecosystems.Paulo Sanjines Barreiro holds a masters in science focused on ecosystem markets and governance from Yale Forestry School. He has ample experience in field research on integrated landscape management for both policy and socio-economical analysis. He is well acquainted with and worked in both public and private sectors; Paulo has managed and monitored large protected areas in Bolivia, coordinated and monitored ecosystem conservation projects in Southern Bahia, where he resides since 2012; and continues to act as both grassroot activist and researcher for ASMOBAN (explained below) on climate education and food sovereignty community based projects in Southern Bahia. The Neighbor's Association of Bairro Novo (ASMOBAN for its acronym in Portuguese) was founded in 2012. The Association has a unique network governance approach with its more than 10 nodes, or initiatives, among them the “Community Fair Saberes e Sabores”, created in 2019, as a solidarity economy strategy to generate family income; and the “Educational and Community vegetable garden”, called Hortinha by the children, created in 2021, to contribute to the nutrition and education of children and adolescents using alternative pedagogical approaches such agroecology. The Fair and the Hortinha directly benefit people in situations of food and economic fragility, residents of Bairro Novo. Thus, offering spaces of solidarity economy and community rooting with an important political, economic and socio-environmental role. This is a produccion and distribuition for Efecto Colibrí - Your podcast site for an inclusive, just and regerative reality.Conviértete en un seguidor de este podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/proyecto-co--4842174/support.

Let's kick things off with a bit of unexpected whimsy as Tsunami Jake sends us down a rabbit hole of prison reform, sports, and the colorful world of mascots. It's 'The Longest Yard' meets real life, and you won't want to miss the laughs and insights. But it's not all jest; we segue into the significant topic of plummeting birth rates, picking apart Ezra Klein's take and offering our own solutions from a previous episode that champions accelerated education and women's empowerment. And for those craving some cuteness overload, our live bunny cat cam promises fuzzy feels and spontaneous chuckles. As we peel back the layers of society, we ask ourselves – could the concept of Zootopia be more than just an animated fantasy? We explore the potential of a society designed to satisfy the diverse needs of its citizens and discuss the phenomenon of "zookosis," where environments fail to cater to natural behaviors, drawing parallels with the human condition. We even ponder Pixar's 'Elemental' and its poignant commentary on community coexistence. This deep dive into the societal fabric is interspersed with musings on the American multicultural experience, proving that thought-provoking content and entertainment can coexist.Wrapping up this dynamic episode, we ponder the ramifications of industrialization on our youth, society, and even the ethics of zoos, pulling wisdom from psychologist Jonathan Haidt. Who would you invite to your last supper? This is the question we pose in our latest podcast episode, "The Final Feast" We dive deep into the Last Supper exercise, an intimate reflection on the people who shape our lives. We guide you through a journey of self-discovery, asking you to visualize your ultimate dinner party. Who makes the cut? This process is revealing, not only of the people you hold dear but also of your core values and priorities. It's a powerful meditation on life's essential relationships and a reminder not to wait for a final feast to appreciate the abundance at your table. Then, we take you to a quaint village, the setting of the enchanting Stone Soup fable. Here, a traveler teaches a skeptical community the transformative power of sharing through a simple, yet profound, act of making soup. Each villager contributes what little they have, creating a meal that symbolizes the strength of collective effort. This story is not just about food; it's about the communal cauldron that stirs generosity, friendship, and the joy of shared experiences. As humans, we thrive on connections and shared memories. These bonds form the fabric of our personal histories and are as essential to our wellbeing as the air we breathe. The episode encourages listeners to recognize and celebrate these connections, to hold them close and to acknowledge the love and friendship that surround us every day.Support the showTAKE YOUR MINDFULNESS & INSIGHTS ONE STEP FURTHER WITH PREMIUM MEDITATIONSSubscribe to premium content today and have access to bonus episodes worksheets and meditations. The Purple Day Podcast is the audio from our Monday episodes of Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Please note: Storytime is written and recorded for the screen. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others. Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime. We enjoy singing and reciting nature-based, seasonal songs and poems during circle time. As the month progresses, we learn new song and poem verses. This week, we learn the final verses to our songs and poems for this month's circle time. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays. After circle time, we hear a story together. We listen to nature stories and folk tales during the third and fourth weeks of the month. Today, we hear the story of Stone Soup. A young girl was traveling and Found herself lost, hungry, and tired. She stopped in a village and asked for a place to stay and some food to eat. An old man offered her a warm bed by the fire but said he had no food to share. “That's okay, she said, “I have a magic stone that makes the most delicious soup.” ✨Interested in more songs and stories?✨ Check out our Storytime Sampler, which includes a whole week of Storytime for each season, giving you new songs and stories to enjoy all year.

Is it just us, or did someone miss a trick by not creating a new version of Stone Soup for the post-lockdown era we currently live in? Sorry, we're just thinking out loud, but after Kate and Betsy read two different versions of Stone Soup this week (one by Marcia Brown and one by Jon J. Muth) it seemed to us that this story is a lovely metaphor for growing connections and community after harrowing times. In the meantime, it was listener Heather D. who suggested that we consider Stone Soup as a potential Thanksgiving title in the first place. She was suggesting the Jon J. Muth, but Betsy's husband expressed shock and horror that we had somehow not done the Marcia Brown version first. Why choose when you can do both? Today we compare and contrast a 1947 version with a 2003 version of the same story. We discuss how war in a region might easily make folks afraid of strangers, how soldiers attack their problem vs. monks, whether or not this is a technical trickster tale, and how that person who just gave salt got away with murder. Adhrucia Apana (@adhrucia) is a Filmmaker and a Founder of the production company Curiosity Entertainment/GP of Curiosity Media Finance. Curiosity is home to the next production from famed television creator Mark Williams (Ozark) and "Funny Girl" written by Anthony McCarten (Theory of Everything, Bohemian Rhapsody) to be directed by Nisha Ganatra (High Note, Late Night). Her creative slate for Curiosity includes projects in conjunction with the Neese Brothers (The Umbrella Academy), Kevin Fox (Law & Order SVU, Raising Kanan), and a co-production with Alcon Entertainment and Nazrin Choudhary (Fear of the Walking Dead). Adhrucia's releases include the EMMY nominated, "The Survivor" starring Ben Foster directed by Barry Levinson, "Capone" starring Tom Hardy, and "Needle in a Timestack" starring Cynthia Ervo, Leslie Odom Jr, Orlando Bloom, and Freida Pinto-directed by John Ridley which she Executive Produced. Adhrucia has worked as an Executive in Film/TV supporting over 30 film and television shows. She graduated Cum Laude from the prestigious Carl H Linder Business Scholars program and is a conservatory-trained vocalist and thespian. Adhrucia is an active member of the diversity initiative lovingly called "Stone Soup" started by Rotten Tomatoes founder Patrick Lee and Goldhouse focused on elevating Asian and South Asian voices in the Entertainment Industry and beyond, and has served or been an advocate and volunteer for Los Angeles based non-profits Young Storytellers and Project Paper Bag. She is a founding member of the Producers Guild of America's Social Impact in Entertainment (SIE) board and an Advisory Board Member to the MOVE Network NFT Platform. What Travis and Adhrucia discussed: Adhrucia knew from a young age that she wanted to be a storyteller. Growing up traveling and being exposed to different cultures, she found that books, music, and TV shows were a common language that helped her connect with people from all backgrounds. This early passion for storytelling never left her, even when she pursued business in college. To succeed in Hollywood, you have to want it more than everybody else. Adhrucia stresses that it's not about talent, connections or who you know - it's about determination. The people who make it are the ones who simply want it the most and are willing to work harder than anyone else to achieve it. Learn the business side of your creative industry. Adhrucia went back to learn the money and economics of the entertainment business, even though she was initially allergic to anything financial. This allowed her to better understand how to create and sell her work, and gave her more creative freedom. Have confidence in a backup skill. Knowing she could rely on being a good salesperson or e-commerce entrepreneur gave Adhrucia the confidence to fully commit to producing instead of playing it safe with a side hustle. Develop expertise in multiple skills to increase your confidence. Redefine what success looks like for you. Adhrucia encourages creators to see money made from art, whether on YouTube, Vimeo or elsewhere, as success - not just traditionally-defined achievements like Oscars. Reframe your definition of success within your industry. To hear Adhrucia's story and advice for succeeding in entertainment straight from her, check out the full conversation on the Travis Makes Friends podcast. She shares how she overcame setbacks, made pivotal career decisions and continues innovating in a rapidly changing industry. It only takes a few seconds on Hanaa Elmi's Twitter timeline for even the most oblivious observer like myself to know that what she is doing is magical. One post from February details several images of student contributions from reflections on Stone Soup and other related readings - child's handwriting draws your eye to the center of each poster - We take care of each other by…We take care of water by…We take care of the Earth by… - student drawings and reflections surrounding those prompts create the shared understanding - Hanaa also captures “Our Ideas” in the margins - have a spirit of ubuntu (I am because we are), she writes, Be like the Water Walkers, Love water!Another series of images shows her young students exploring questions like “What's the heart of the story? What do you think the author wants us to know in our minds & hearts as a reader?”, one student reply reads “Ms. I think the heart of the story is that anger is okay and normal. We just have to breathe.” Hanaa prompts students to explore the differences & similarities between justice & charity. She quotes from one of the dozens of books her students use, “What are words really? Are they just random letters arranged in different ways? Or do they have magical powers that can inspire and amaze?” A student uses a number string to double 40. Students with clipboards find and sort animals on a number line by their height. They write, draw, & reflect in dream journals. I could go on and on and on… In every post, it's so obvious that students are deeply engaged & invested in the world & with each other. Community, love, joy, and learning are self-evident in the work she does with kids.GuestsHanaa Elmi is an elementary teacher in Windsor-Essex County. Mother Nature doesn't watch movies. So if you're thinking that prepping for a natural disaster should be based on what Hollywood - or even local media - is telling you to do, you could fall far short in being ready for a hurricane, tornado, flood, or other crisis. If you want to know what a REAL natural disaster looks like and how to prepare for it, you need inside perspective from those who have actually lived through it - made their mistakes... and learned their lessons. THAT, my fellow warrior, is exactly what we have in store for you in this week's show, including: * Why geography isn't the only "-graphy" you need to be concerned with for your home or shelter! * The surprising type of "cheap survival bunker" that fared well during a powerful hurricane! * Simple ways to ensure long-term water supply no matter where you live! * The "Stone Soup" method of building a self-reliant network for security! * Why "remote sheltering" is NOT your best approach to surviving a disaster! * And much, MUCH more! Even if you don't live in "hurricane territory", these real-world, practical survival lessons will make you and your family safer and more secure during any natural - or man-made disaster or other crisis!
