Bible Reading: Mark 4:35-41BOOM! Seven-year-old Carter sat up in bed. Rain spattered against the window, and lightning streaks made his room as bright as day. He could see his favorite teddy bear propped in a corner. BOOM! Another loud crash of thunder. Carter burrowed under his covers, a pillow pressed over his ears. From under the blankets, Carter peeked toward the wall where the rosy glow of a nightlight usually shone, but between flashes of lightning, only blackness filled the room. Cautiously, he poked the button of a little table lamp near his bed, but instead of warm, friendly light, there was nothing. Trembling, he buried himself even deeper in his bed.Rain poured down harder outside, sounding as if someone were hurling tennis balls against the house. Wide awake now, Carter wondered if he dared make a run for his parents' room. Just then he felt a soft touch through his blanket. "Mom?" he asked in a muffled voice."I'm here, honey." Carter looked out from his blanket tent and, as another flash of lightning illuminated the room, saw his mother in her fuzzy green robe standing next to him. Another BOOM shook the house. "Noisy, isn't it?" said Mom. As she sat down on the edge of Carter's bed, the power came back on. With Mom there, and with the familiar light filling the room, Carter no longer felt afraid. "Did you remember that Jesus is right here with you, Carter?" asked Mom. "He was watching over you even before I came in. He controls the wind and rain, you know. We don't have to be afraid because He's with us."Carter began to feel sleepy as he listened to his mother's comforting voice. Her hands closed around his, and he heard her saying, "Thank You, Jesus, for loving Carter and especially for being here with him during the storm." Outside, the storm rumbled farther away while rain dripped quietly from the roof. Through almost-closed eyes, Carter saw his mom turn the light off and tiptoe from his room."Thank You, Jesus," whispered Carter. "I'm so glad You're always here." He yawned, snuggled under his covers, and soon fell asleep. –Phyllis I. KlomparensHow About You?Are you afraid of thunderstorms? Or maybe there's something else that scares you, like meeting new people or being alone in the dark. When you're in a situation that makes you feel scared, remember that Jesus is with you and trust Him to comfort you and help you not be afraid. He loves you so much that He gave His life to save you, and He is always watching over you. Trust Him to take care of you.Today's Key Verse:[Jesus] said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" (NIV) (Mark 4:40)Today's Key Thought:Jesus is always with you

Sammy and Leo Marcus, of Winnipeg, have turned their own sensitivities to the startlingly loud automatic toilets in public washrooms, into a prize-winning science project that's shedding a light on the plight of young kids and also people who wear hearing aids. The teens, who are 13 year old twins, measured hundreds of devices in hundreds of bathrooms across the Manitoba capitol, to document just how loud are those whirring automatic hand driers, the paper towel dispensers, the urinals and the hands-free flushing toilets. They found that not only do these noises cause anxiety, but also often blow past the acceptable legal noise levels that can lead to hearing damage, over a sustained period of time, and require ear protection, especially for janitors and others who work in bathrooms. Curiously, they found that of all the buildings in their survey, the Jewish ones have the quietest restrooms. Their scientific research just won the duo top prize for their age category in Winnipeg's city-wide annual science fair. They call their project The Royal Flush. And while the research has ended, for now, the hope is their work will prompt real change in how bathrooms are designed–not just for maximum hygiene, but also keeping hearing safety in mind. On this episode of The CJN Daily, Sammy and Leo Marcus join to reveal the best and the worst of their findings, and how they coped with strange looks, strict librarians, and grungy stalls. I would like to see Texas become the center of the universe for bitcoin and crypto,” US Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said in 2021. In 2024, Republican Governor Greg Abbott said Texas “wears the crown as the bitcoin mining capital of the world.” But in small towns like Granbury, TX, about an hour southwest of Fort Worth, residents are the ones paying the price for Texas' crypto boom. Granbury's 300-megawatt bitcoin mine, which is owned by Marathon Digital, a Florida-based cryptocurrency company, uses a mix of liquid immersion and industrial fans to prevent over 20,000 computers from overheating. Many residents say that it's the constant sound from those fans that has made life increasingly unbearable in their small town—and that their concerns are going ignored by the company and government officials. Have you ever found yourself nodding along in a noisy bar, pretending to understand your friend's story, but truthfully, you're just hoping for a quieter moment to catch the plot? You're not alone. Hearing conversation in loud environments is something many of us struggle with. But thanks to a new study published in the journal Proceedings Of The Royal Society B - science might have a simple fix! All you need to do is tap your fingers to a beat, before the talking starts. The researchers explored whether rhythmic motor priming, like tapping your finger to a beat, could help your brain process speech more efficiently in noisy environments. Participants listened to long sentences buried in background noise. Right before the sentence began, some were asked to tap along to a beat at different speeds, like one tap every half-second or so. The other participants didn't tap at all. After the sentence, all participants had to identify a word they'd just heard. They found that the people who tapped at a specific rhythm, around 1.5 to 2 times per second, did noticeably better at understanding the sentence, even in the noisy environment. It turns out that this tapping rate lines up with the natural pace of words in human speech (called the “lexical rate”) and helps your brain tune in more effectively. Think of it like syncing up your brain's "listening rhythm" with the speaker's flow. The study also supports a growing idea in neuroscience: our motor system (the one that moves your body) also plays a role in how we listen. When we move rhythmically, even just by tapping a finger, it seems to help our brains track the rhythm of speech. It's an easy, no-tech, zero-cost hack to try the next time you are in a noisy café or busy dinner party. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"The first thing that stood out to me about this field recording is that there is no real melodic information. It's all street noise, most of it not of clearly recognisable origin.  "Even though Dubrovnik is 4,700 miles away from where I live, in another country on another continent across an ocean, the soundscape is very familiar to me. Garbage trucks and ventilation units all speak the same language.  "In her notes on the recording, Ristić describes the noisy Dubrovnik morning with richly evocative phrases like: “textural and multiphonic”; “grinding machinery”; “the town's growling bowels”; and “a constant percussive development.”  "She writes: “I could not help but be fascinated by how a landscape of such beaming beauty can exist in this hideous soundscape.”  "I kicked around a few ideas but eventually decided to have the work be entirely rhythmic. I wanted to capture that unfocused, only-half-listening state when you become aware of rhythms emerging from the background and soon you begin adding your own.  "Early on I was listening to the recording on headphones while walking home from the train and imagining different rhythmic elements over it. I was walking at a good pace and that set the tempo. It's a long walk and I got so used to that beat that thereafter I couldn't imagine it differently.  "I wanted to use the field recording as the sole sound source but at some point found a royalty-free recording of pealing church bells in Old Town Dubrovnik that was too wonderful to not use*. Aside from that, everything is derived from the field recording.  *[Royalty Free Sound Library: “Croatia Church Bells” recorded by Free to Use Sounds and purchased on Bandcamp] "I created and assembled this piece using Koala Sampler, AUM and AudioShare, splitting tasks between my iPhone and my iPad. Ultimately I didn't use any audio effects or digital manipulation.  "I find inspiration everywhere, but this composition was particularly inspired by Dance of the Knights from Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet, Tom Waits' junkyard jug band sound, and Manja Ristić's previous work with field recordings. When I saw she had contributed a recording for the project, I chose it immediately." Dubrovnik streets reimagined by daddy fall down. For today's episode, we expand on Autism and Sensory Processing. We return to the mesencephalon—a brainstem region with superior and inferior colliculi—as a critical hub for sensory integration and attention bias. We cover four scientific articles, starting with Marco et al. (2011), which uses EEGs, MEGs, and fMRIs to reveal autism's auditory processing inconsistencies (e.g., delayed N100/M100 cortical responses), tactile hypersensitivity from overactive receptors, and visual processing quirks like reduced fusiform gyrus activation for faces. Russo et al. then explore brainstem-level deficits, showing autistic children's auditory brainstem responses (ABR) to speech syllables like "DA" exhibit poor neural synchrony and phase locking, especially in noise, due to disrupted wave V, A, D, F timing—linking these to language impairments. These findings point to biological roots, including denser neocortical mini-columns (30-40 vs. 50-60 microns in controls) and cerebellar Purkinje cell loss, impairing local processing and long-range connectivity. The episode continues with Leekam et al. (2007), confirming over 90% of autistic individuals have multi-modal sensory abnormalities—hypo- and hypersensitivity tied to serotonin and GABA dysregulation—persisting across life, while Tomchek and Dunn (2007) note 95% prevalence via caregiver reports, hinting at neural pathway disruptions. At some point, we need to acknowledge the mesencephalon's embryological stasis as one of four neural cell types, suggesting its evolutionary role in sensory modulation is key to Autism's biology. These articles collectively highlight altered neural circuitry, from brainstem to cortex, and biases us to remaining within ourselves. Remember, the biology that gives us Autism allows us to be comfortable within ourselves.
