    We're excited to welcome Colin & Caroline to the next episode of Small Venue Music! Colin & Caroline Healy are famed Richmond singer-songwriters who create incredible original songs and acoustic covers. They have played across town and beyond, being added to highly successful curated playlists and even partnering with Netflix on the ‘13 Reasons Why' soundtrack. These musicians have achieved tremendous success and share their story, experiences, and views on the music industry. The interview and performances were filmed at Kindred Spirit Brewing Satellite in Richmond, VA.    Colin & Caroline start by performing their hit original single ‘More Than Gravity.' This is an amazing love song that gives insight into their relationship and displays their musical talent. The two sit down with host Don Busick and begin the interview by discussing how they met; attending Trinity High School together and even performing for each other and other students. As friends, they parted ways after high school and independently pursued careers in music for several years. When the two were back in Richmond, they produced music videos and performed at weddings, singing acoustic covers and eventually writing songs together.    Colin & Caroline picked up demand as a duo, and gained notoriety on Spotify. The two tell the story of the moment they were asked to be a part of the Netflix show ‘13 Reasons Why' soundtrack, with their song ultimately being featured in the introduction sequence. The two discuss what goes into their cover work; from the type of songs they deconstruct to the strategy behind curated playlist placement. They also talk about music video production as well as their experiences playing in and around Richmond while starting a family.    Colin & Caroline go on to play an unreleased original song called ‘Cigarettes,' where they express feelings of “nostalgia” for “summer nights.”    Rejoining the discussion, Colin & Caroline outline future plans like crafting an EP from new singles. They will continue to develop video production methods and make use of their new home studio all while raising their child with music as an important part of their family.     We're excited to welcome Trace Nixon and the band Gone Country to the next episode of Small Venue Music! Trace is a Richmond artist who recently released his first single “This One's For Alan.” The song gives a nod to legends of country music, with resonating lyrics and a style that will get you on your feet. Trace and Gone Country have played around Richmond for a couple of years now, and contributed greatly to the area's country music presence. Trace and Gone Country guitarist John Holden sit down to talk about their inspirations, backgrounds, the country music scene in Richmond and beyond. Performances and interviews were filmed at Crazy Rooster Brewing Company in Powhatan, VA.    Trace and the band start by playing “This One's For Alan” live. Trace and John then sit down with host Don Busick. The two outline the process behind writing the song and leveraging the skills of musicians in the band to make it great. Trace gives a shout out to artist Arthur Freeman for his steel guitar contributions. The two talk about the arrangement of the song, sharing the spotlight between vocals, guitar, and other instruments. John discusses the guitar setup he used to get his classic country tone. Trace talks about the success of “This One's For Alan,” and plans to release more music going forward due to the large amount of support he and the band have received around town.   Trace goes on to play an unreleased original song called “Don't Write Me Off.” He sings alongside his parents, bluegrass legends Nick and Michelle Nixon.     Returning to the show, Trace and John talk about the formation of Gone Country, bringing on bassist Chip Hale, drummer Corey Marshall, fiddler Diane Hossinger, and pianist Adam Kohout. Trace discusses the process for creating setlists, crafting them around the instruments being played and trends of nostalgia in the country music scene. The two discuss their relationships with country music, both growing up in families that enjoyed and were involved in the scene. Throughout their lives, Trace and John have been musically inclined, playing a variety of instruments. They go on to discuss the country music scene in Richmond, with their unique perspective as a group that plays originals and covers. Trace and John share their aspirations to play larger shows and expand their reach.     Please welcome Tyler Meacham to Season 2 of the Small Venue Music podcast! Tyler is an incredible singer-songwriter who has contributed so much to the music scene here in Richmond, Virginia. Her new single, “dream house,” is an emotional piece that reflects feelings of loss, grief, and personal inspiration. This is an amazing episode, with conversations and performances recorded at Crazy Rooster Brewing Company in Powhatan.   Tyler starts by playing her new single “dream house” live. She then joins host Don Busick and the two discuss everything that went into the creation of her song. Tyler talks about production and promotion efforts, filming her music video while on a trip to Asheville, North Carolina, and outlines what success looks like for her music. She also comments on the state of the music industry, and how challenging the landscape can be for many artists to navigate.    Tyler goes on to play two more of her songs. “Better Than I Used To Be” comes from her 2022 album “Into the Fray.” Tyler also plays “Denver,” a track that was released in 2019.    Tyler rejoins the conversation and discusses how she came to be a professional musician. She talks about getting her dream job at Disney, but feeling boxed in by a life that was outlined for her. She found that creating music was the best way to both express herself and try something new every day. Through ups and downs, Tyler talks about the many different hats she wears.    Lastly, Tyler shares her thoughts on the Richmond music scene. She wants to increase cooperation and support between musicians, especially with other female artists.     We are excited to welcome Angi Baber and Rob Pannell, owners of Chilton House, to the show. Together they have hosted touring artists in their Richmond home for several years, putting on some of the most unique shows for artists and audiences alike. Chilton House is a venue like no other, offering fans a place to enjoy their favorite music while supporting and connecting with their favorite artists.  In this episode, we talk with Angi and Rob about how they were brought together by their love of Alex Chilton of “Big Star'' as well as “The Replacements.” The two went on to purchase a former family practice clinic and turned it into their dream home, realizing they could bring their love of live music to Richmond in the form of house concerts.  We then hear about the logistics of Chilton House shows, from travel schedules to equipment setup to sleeping arrangements. All ticket proceeds go to artists, and the entire process of these concerts are for the benefit of musicians, with the obvious bonus of providing a great listening experience to the community. The relationships fostered with both artists and audience members keep many coming back and create a familiar atmosphere that welcomes newcomers. Lastly we discuss how Chilton House's first and only rule shows respect for the artists and creates a better experience for audience members. Angi and Rob also go into the history of their extensive in-home video game and pinball collection, with Rob being a ranked player. This area of their home, filled with instruments and art adds a unique twist to an already special place.     We are excited to welcome Justin Laughter to Small Venue Music! Justin is a singer/songwriter for the bands Flashlight Tag and Silly Bus, an entertainment lawyer, co-owner of the new Gramophone winery and music venue, and all-around artistic renaissance man.    Justin describes the start of his journey as a songwriter, from his early work writing songs to his first studio recording.  He shares his work in both bands and spends time describing Flashlight Tag's recent album “Don't Blink”.  Justin talks about how the songs on Don't Blink were heavily influenced by all of the different types of relationships he's experienced throughout his life.    Justin and Don discuss the Flashlight Tag hosted annual Christmas Show.  Justin describes how it is a place to create an event that celebrates the holiday season, embraces the great musicians in Richmond, and raises money for local charities. Justin talks about a number of artists and bands that have made an impact on his work and some of his early influences.   They take a break and Justin returns to perform two live acoustic versions of songs from “Don't Blink.”  He performs “Sue' and “Control” from the Don't Blink LP.   Rejoining the show, Justin and Don focus on entertainment law, and within it Justin's specialization in music law. Justin describes the biggest mistakes artists make, as well as how new and even established artists should go about documenting and protecting their work. These practices play an even greater role in a collaborative songwriting process among band members, as Justin emphasizes clear communication and documentation in the songwriting process. He advises artists who are just starting out but have dreams of playing music professionally to go for it and “treat it like a business” from the start. Justin reflects on the evolution of his career. Coming from a large Real Estate firm and eventually founding his own entertainment practice.    Lastly, Justin discusses how he partnered with Arthur Grant and Chris Mayo to found Gramophone, Justin outlines his hopes for the location to become a performance venue for artists of all varieties.     One of Richmond's Best Singer/Songwriters, Mackenzie Roark, joins the show to discuss her latest album, Rollin' High, Feelin' Low, as well as her music journey, influences, and future plans..    Coming back to Richmond fresh off her first headlining role as a band leader, Mackenzie recounts performing at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots festival in Bristol, TN-VA, the “birthplace of country music.”    Mackenzie's new album, “Rollin' High, Feelin' Low” is a culmination of works that describe her own experiences with love and loss in relationships.. The lyrics resonate on a personal level, speaking to the challenges in our lives that make us who we are. Mackenzie recounts the production process of her album, and how she appreciates the collaboration between musicians and her producer, Trey Burnart Hall.    Later in the episode, Mackenzie plays two amazing acoustic versions of songs from her latest album: “Little Pills” and “Sweet Thing.”    Rejoining the discussion, Mackenzie describes how she has always been comfortable playing solo shows in smaller venues. They talk about the logistical and financial needs required to play as a full band in larger venues. Mackenzie shares a bit about the formation and members of her band (The Hot Pants).  Looking forward, Mackenzie describes her goals to open for a band touring the United States, setting up a small tour in Europe, and working on a follow up album.   Toward the end of the episode, Mackenzie describes her musical journey. After picking up a guitar in the fifth grade, she found confidence in her singing abilities through her youth worship band. Having started to write songs as an undergrad student at James Madison University, Mackenzie traveled to Ireland for her Masters degree.     In the second episode of Small Venue Music, Don sits down with Troy Miller and Lee Brooks of Hold My Beer.
