When you hear the story of how syphilis research was carried out in the United States in the 20th century, you'll probably start to understand why there is a history of mistrust of the medical establishment, especially among the African American community. This episode details one of the bleakest and most shameful chapters in U.S. medical history, a time when ethics were cast aside at the expense of minority communities. We'll talk about the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (aka Tuskegee Experiment) as well as the Guatemala syphilis experiments that preceded them. You've heard the sayings about how hard life was back in the 18th and 19th centuries, but have you ever considered the life of a chimney sweep in London during those times? Far from the cheery character in Mary Poppins, the actual chimney sweeps of the time were children, hired into a very dangerous job. One surgeon made the association between that occupation and a certain medical condition. Eventually his work helped change society for the better. In the 1990's a curious thing happened. When a patient arrived very ill to the emergency department, doctors and nurses were astonished to find crystals in her blood with a foul odor. Why were they smelling the blood? Who knows, it was the 90's?Soon thereafter, multiple people in the hospital room with her started to fall ill. What might have caused these things to happen? We'll see if we can help figure out this historically unusual medical case.“The toxic lady” unilad.com“The press enterprise” 21 Feb 1994 “After tragedy family wonder's why”"Mass Psychogenic Illness: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_psychogenic_illnessMorbidology https://morbidology.com/the-toxic-lady/https://www.iflscience.com/the-death-of-the-toxic-lady-remains-an-unsolved-medical-case-59137https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1994/04/30/case-of-toxic-woman-closed-with-mystery-still-unsolved/470acaeb-74d2-42d7-82df-5b56fa2b5fc5/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Gloria_Ramirezhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimethyl_sulfoxideSponsor: Artery InkUse promo code LISTENTOPHP at Artery Ink's website to save 10%* on your order of $35 or more and show support for our show as well as for a homegrown, wonderful local company. Look what the cat dragged in! Richie Reckless and P.V. Trïxxx from Tëaze will be shredding, screaming, rocking, and yes, educating us all on their hair metal ways on Small Venue Music. To give you a taste of how Tëaze describes their band, here is an excerpt from their social pages. “A Tëaze show is a glimpse back in time, an authentic tribute to rocks most outrageous era. Playing the greatest party anthems from Bon Jovi to Van Halen, with stage moves Poison wouldn't dare attempt. If you long for the days when the grass was green, the girls were pretty, and so were the guys, let Tëaze pour their sugar on you.” Tëaze records an incredible new version of the Small Venue Music theme song to introduce the band on the show. It's fun, rockin' and demonstrates the band's creativity and sense of humor. Richie starts off the show by describing the origins of the band and how they came up with the concept of an “all in” hair metal band. Patrick & Richie discuss the commitment the band made to getting all the details right to bring that era of rock to life. They both describe how you can't go “halfway” when it comes to hair metal. The guys talk about the bands they love that influenced them and what they love playing live. Don asks several questions about Tëaze's stage show. The guys describe how they love interacting with the crowd for photos, the fun and dangers associated with stage jumps, and how they share lead vocals among the members of the band. Don asks a series of questions from superfans of the band. The show transitions to a live acoustic performance by Richie and Patrick of a new original song, “Light the Way”. They put on an amazing high energy rendition of the song that everyone will want to hear. After the performance, the guys “unmask” and Richie and Patrick return to the show. The guys talk about how they got their start in music, the roles each band member plays off stage to bring their show to life, and all the supporting members of the band that help make shows possible. The show closes with the guys sharing some future aspirations they have for the band. They end with Don, Richie, and Patrick sharing shots of whisky to celebrate a fun, amazing show! Esteemed retinal surgeon and accomplished author, Dr. Andrew Lam joined us on the show to discuss multiple foundational stories to explain how modern cardiology came to be. This comes from a chapter out of his most recent book, The Masters of Medicine which also contains other stories about the most important innovations and discoveries from a variety of medical specialties. We'll talk about how they first figured out how to open up cardiac arteries. We'll talk about early open heart surgery. We'll also touch on the history of heart transplantation. This episode has a fun twist. Aaron and Mike will go through the case of the famous American author and mastery of mystery and suspense, Edgar Allen Poe's. They'll be presented with his final moments and hospital course, initially not knowing who we're talking about. This is a bit of a look at how physicians brainstorm medical cases to come up with the most likely explanations. This story is perfectly suited for Poe, not only because it's him, but because the mysterious nature of his end is something only he could write. These two titans of medical history were contemporaries whose scientific sparring was as interesting as it was helpful. By butting heads over topics in microbiology, Robert Koch and Louis Pasteur, used a rivalry to further our understanding of infectious disease and both contributed greatly to mitigating the impact that so many different microbes have on humankind. This week's episode was excellently researched by Patrick Kelly, one of our returning guests. An exceptional educator in his own right, we encourage all of our listeners to go over to the newer iteration of his YouTube Channel, @PatKellyTeaches now focusing on, of all things, medical history! And if you're in the mood to learn more about anatomy and physiology topics, his other channel @Corporis is still available as well. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease of historic proportions. Not only is it still around, infecting an estimated 10+million people in 2021 alone, but in a prior era, in Victorian England, having tuberculosis became something of a fashion achievement, believe it or not. In this episode, we'll explore how having this awful and deadly disease--especially in a time before antibiotics--became almost desirable in a twisted way. From corsets to fainting to so much more! This episode will be a deviation from our normal format. Unfortunately, the entire episode we'd recorded for release this week was lost to the cyberspace aether. A whole episode just gone from existence. Discovering this with no time to re-record, we decided to release something previously unheard: a Poor Historians Podcast pilot episode. We had played with several formats for the show and this episode was one such project. It's a brief radio drama about Dr. William Beaumont, a famous surgeon, who happened to treat a fur trader named Alexis St. Martin for a gunshot wound to the abdomen. St. Martin did not die from the wound, but instead a permanent channel grew between his abdominal skin and the inside of his stomach, medically called a "fistula". This was a window into his stomach (literally) and Dr. Beaumont used this opportunity to study how the stomach worked in digestion and its other general duties. In this episode, we imagined what it would have been like to use a time machine to travel to the early 19th century to see how this unfolded in real time. We'll be back in two weeks with a regular episode, but hopefully our fans and new listeners find this a fun departure. The alternative was no episode and that would make us sad. Enjoy a very new Aaron, Max, and Mike with then just unboxed microphones, fumbling around a story in medical history.Sponsor: Artery InkUse promo code LISTENTOPHP at Artery Ink's website to save 10%* on your order of $35 or more and show support for our show as well as for a homegrown, wonderful local company. As the resident Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) on this podcast, Max will lead his MD colleagues through an examination of the roots of osteopathic medicine from its founding by Andrew Taylor Still, its quest to re-define medicine, and its eventual growth into the medical profession it is today. If you've ever wondered why some doctors have D.O. after their name, this episode will hopefully explain it all. This is one of those stories in medical history that does have a happy ending, in our humble opinion.Sources:https://books.google.com/books?id=H08EAAAAMBAJ&q=andrew+taylor+still+lightning+bone+setter&pg=PA108#v=snippet&q=andrew%20taylor%20still%20lightning%20bone%20setter&f=false (Life article about AT Still)https://quackwatch.org/chiropractic/rb/bcc/8-2/ (Farrell comments on osteopathy)https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22331804/ (DOs not able to serve in WWI and WWII as docs).https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteopathic_medicine_in_the_United_States#History (General overview)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Taylor_Still (AT Still's life overview)https://www.amboss.com/us/knowledge/Cranial_osteopathy/ (Cranial stuff)https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/12/4/e053468 (Summary of research on OMT)https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33512391/ (OMT use in US nowadays)https://www.aacom.org/become-a-doctor/about-osteopathic-medicine/history-of-ome (timeline of notable DO historical events)-------Sponsor: Artery InkUse promo code LISTENTOPHP at Artery Ink's website to save 10%* on your order of $35 or more and show support for our show as well as for a homegrown, wonderful local company. We'll look inward this week to talk about the history of our own specialty as emergency physicians. People may not be aware that the practice of emergency medicine is relatively new in the house of medicine. Before the 1970's the ER was a very different place as you'll find out. In this week's episode we'll trace back the beginnings of the modern intensive care unit and critical care medicine as we know it. Much of this arose thanks to two particular infectious diseases--polio and tetanus. Tune in to find out how intrepid Danish physicians collaborated to save the lives of people dying from these diseases and ultimately led to a whole new concept in medicine--the ability to devote intense care to try and save a life.Source:https://thebaffler.com/salvos/the-power-and-peril-of-the-icu-gaffney Sponsor: Artery InkUse promo code PHPOD at Artery Ink's website to save 10%* on your order of $35 or more and show support for our show as well as for a homegrown, wonderful local company. We're back! Many people know that insulin is an important part of the treatment for diabetes. In this episode we'll talk about how insulin was discovered and first used to treat a disease that, throughout the whole of human history, was previously fatal. We'll explain what diabetes is, how it used to be treated in the age before insulin, and how a brilliant cohort including a Canadian orthopedic surgeon and fellow scientists finally figured out a revolutionary way to treat this disease. We'll also discuss a bit of unsavory history regarding the pharmaceutical industry which managed to preserve profits even despite the best efforts of the discoverers of insulin, to protect the patent from such profiteering. Scientific idealism meets a sad reality. Apologies but we'll have to delay the episode another week. Technical issues + scheduling conflicts + illness have all made for difficulty getting the episode done on our usual schedule. Also, the podcast will be moving back to releases every two weeks. Good changes in Max's career have unfortunately overtaken the free time he'd had to increase the show output. So, starting next Thursday we'll have the next episode out and be returning to our every two week release schedule. Hopefully this ensures we can continue to put the right amount of time and effort into the episodes we release. While we've discussed numerous famous Victorian era surgeons, we haven't taken this deep of a dive into their facilities. This week we bring you a conversation with Monica Walker, PhD, all the way from London, England. This episode runs a bit longer than the others but that's just where the interview took us. So many neat tidbits. We'll talk about some of the common surgical procedures performed in the Old Op Theatre, some of the famous surgeons who practiced there, and Dr. Walker will give a fascinating account of what surgery in that space looked like. There's even a story about a surgeon who liked to bring body parts home with him when he went on vacation--as you do. We think you'll really enjoy this interview. Please note that the museum itself is under renovation at the moment and will re-open on April 1st, 2023 for all of our fans to visit if they should so choose.Sponsor: Artery InkUse promo code PHPOD at Artery Ink's website to save 10%* on your order of $35 or more and show support for our show as well as for a homegrown, wonderful local company. Doctors and the Hippocratic Oath just go together like Turner and Hooch. That analogy makes as little sense as it does to keep harping on the Hippocratic Oath as a rite of passage for graduating physicians. There's plenty of myth to dispel here. Fortunately we won't go it alone. This week we are joined by physician and author, Dr. Brian Elliott who has written a book examining several traditions--such as this oath--in the world of medicine. His book is called White Coat Ways: A History of Medical Traditions and Their Battle with Progress and will be released tomorrow on January 27th, 2023 (pre-order now). We reviewed a chapter of his book on the topic and Brian joined us on this episode to dispel some common beliefs about the oath and the reasons we might not want to use it anymore. Let's mix one part anatomy lesson with one part historical overview of a very important blood vessel that has been a problem for numerous famous figures including Lucille Ball and Albert Einstein. We'll talk about what the aorta is, the various ways it can become a problem, people in recent and past history who have had issues with it, and finally how we developed a modern treatment for some of its overall fortunately uncommon problems. Of note we'll be doing our very best not to confuse aortic aneurysms (abnormal weakening of the walls causing a ballooning of the vessel) with dissections (where the vessel wall starts to rip apart) during this episode, but even we mix up the terminology once in awhile. Also, the sentient supercomputer that helps us navigate windows to the past has found a new romantic companion now that the James Webb Space Telescope is yesterday's news. Our guest this week is author Paul Craddock, here to share his new book with us. Spare Parts is his first published work and is an excellent read into the history of one of the most complicated frontiers in medicine, transplant surgery. Stretching back to the 16th century and arriving into the present day, we'll go over some of the discoveries that led to the ability to transplant organs in the modern age. We know you'll enjoy this interview and highly recommend reading this book for yourselves. Paul's exceptional storytelling is apparent in our interview and his wit is well suited to his subject material. Paul is an Honorary Senior Research Associate in the Division of Surgery and Interventional Sciences at University College London. Addendum: There were some errors in the original audio file caught by early listeners. These were corrected but early downloaders may have the old version. Apologies for that. This week we bring you part two of our deep dive into the history of smallpox and the discovery of vaccination. We'll talk about smallpox in the Americas and the unimaginable devastation wrought upon the native peoples of the two continents. Then we'll talk about how this awful disease came to its end thanks to the discovery of vaccination, courtesy of Dr. Edward Jenner and the appreciation for the stalwart immune systems of milkmaids as the first key to winning against the viral foe that had plagued civilization for probably the entirety of recorded history. We are joined again by James Wilke, former artist in residency at the International Museum of Surgical Science whose research centered on smallpox. His exhibit, Pox Americana: How Smallpox Once Plagued America and The World was extended beyond its original dates to run from July and having just recently ended this past November. James is an artist of many talents. In addition to his work as a medical historian, he is an artist-author, playwright, Emmy award winning director, producer, singer/songwriter and, most recently again is the creator of this week's episode and fantastic introductory "Christmas at Mount Vernon" skit-- think Night Before Xmas except with more smallpox than the original--and the later Blossom 2.0 Vaccine Supreme skit as well. Tik Merauke - An Epidemic Like No Other by Dr. John Richens, available from Melbourne University Publishing. ---->> Click HERE to purchase.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In this week's episode we are joined by author and physician, Dr. John Richens, all the way from the U.K. He is a world expert in the disease known as Donovanosis, a unique sexually transmitted infection which nearly decimated an entire culture of people, the Marind of West Papua on the island of New Guinea. His book, Tik Merauke, is a comprehensive account of how this infection affected the Marind in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and why this disease, which is typically difficult to spread, had an unusually large impact on their people. This is a story that is not usually covered in medical history circles so we're happy to shed some light on it here. We hope you enjoy and we strongly recommend John's book as a fascinating read.**Please note that there will be discussions of the cultural sexual practices of the Marind as they are important to understanding this story. Any medical history podcast needs to spend some time talking about perhaps the worst and most culturally influential infectious disease we've known: smallpox. So we're going to do this in two parts, starting with an overview of how smallpox affected various areas of the world and truly shaped the whole of human civilization. It's also one of those rare stories that ends in triumph but that will wait for the second part on this topic. It's hard to overstate how intertwined we as humans are, historically speaking, with this virus. In light of that, we invited an expert onto the show. This week we're happy to have Emmy award winning director, James Wilke on the show. Having completed his artist-in-residency program at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, IL in the spring of 2022, James spent his time there researching smallpox. His exhibit, Pox Americana: How Smallpox Once Plagued America and The World was extended beyond its original dates to run from July through November of 2022. James is an artist of many talents. In addition to his work as a medical historian, he is an artist-author, playwright, director, producer, singer/songwriter and, most recently, the creator of this week's episode. So listen in and enjoy this introduction to smallpox--without having to get up close and personal with the pustules.Guest Links:Museum website: https://imss.org/james-r-wilke/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/james.r.wilke/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087887634437Podcast Links:-Linktree (reviews/ratings/social media links): linktr.ee/poorhistorianspod-Merch Site: https://www.teepublic.com/user/poor-historians-podcast

We'll talk about Lancaster's famous vaccine farm. We'll talk about reasons a modern physician may still practice good old fashioned bloodletting. We'll also talk about why some people eat other people after they're buried in honey for 100 years. Seriously, there's a lot to chat about. If you can believe it, there once was a time when your friendly neighborhood barber might do more than cut your hair and give a close shave. For many centuries, barbers took on numerous surgical, medical, and even dental procedures when others would not. In this episode we'll talk about the role of the barber-surgeon, from their beginnings to the decline of the profession. Maybe you've heard a thing or two about the barber's pole, but there's much more to this story.Sources: -https://www.ancient-origins.net/history/barber-surgeons-0012613-https://hekint.org/2020/01/28/the-barber-surgeons-their-history-over-the-centuries/-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barber_surgeonPodcast Links:-Linktree (reviews/ratings/social media links): linktr.ee/poorhistorianspod-Merch Site: https://www.teepublic.com/user/poor-historians-podcast

An apparent typo was sending motorists in South Florida seeking to resolve their traffic citations to a website selling 2024 merchandise for former President Donald Trump, officials said. Miami Beach police had been handing out the erroneous flyers until the second week of February, police spokesperson Ernesto Rodriguez told the Miami Herald on Feb. 14. He did not know how long they had been in circulation. “We're aware of this typographical error now,” Rodriguez said. “We put out a notice to officers to discontinue using them.” The flyer explained how to resolve minor traffic tickets online by visiting the Miami-Dade County Clerk of Courts website. The problem was the web address printed in the flyer left out a hyphen, prompting drivers to visit the wrong website — a site that sells Trump 2024 hats and flags. Court administrators said Miami Beach appears to be the only agency with the web address typo. The original flyer sent to Miami-Dade police in May 2020 included the correct address, but Miami Beach produced its own version of the notices and the error was inserted at some point during the printing process. In Pt. 2 me and John talk about taxes on investments. 2020 forced a lot of people to step up their hustle, so a lot of us (including myself) jumped into a little bit of everything. The stock market, options trading, forex, crypto, real-estate, and more. The problem is, most of us don't know the tax laws in regards to our capital gains/losses and at what tax rate we will be taxed on our dividends, trading and selling, and more. Have your pen ready, this one is full of gems. Or go ahead and just call the man yourself and tell him Carlon Brown from Point Advising sent you to get your taxes right, you can thank me later! John posts up in the booth with me to dissect taxes! It's a topic that many of us are very unfamiliar and uncomfortable with, but John does a great job of demystifying the subject keeping it short/sweet/simple with his explanation. In this pt. 1 we talk about business taxes for entrepreneurs, young professionals, those who are looking to start a business, trainers, people who run camps and for my pro athletes (who are basically independent contractors). Breaking down what kind of entity you should set up for your business with tax purposes in mind, types of insurances you may consider having to protect your business, and what is/isn't tax deductible for your business.
