Before kicking off on the scheduled topic, we hit on a couple offseason headlines from press conferences and other interviews this week. From Anthony Bradford's injury and A.J. Barner's "surgeries" to a couple key takeaways from Sam Darnold about the new offense. Who are the unsung offensive pieces that can matter most in repeating as champs? We discuss the impact one receiver could make and how it could be a game changer on offense based on what we saw last season. We also look at how production of the offense can come in different ways, particularly from the tight end spot and why the Seahawks saw that value during the middle of the season last year. Finally, there's one player whose continuity with Sam Darnold combined with a potential third-year leap could help provide stability at a position that was critical to the team's first Super Bowl victory. Seahawks left tackle Charles Cross faced off against Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns back in 2023. What went right? What went wrong? And what did an average drive look like both from a scheme perspective and a matchup perspective? Before we get there, we discuss the three-year, $42M extension for edge Derek Hall (up to $46.5M, $21M guaranteed). Hall's pressure rate and run-defense impact demonstrate his balanced game, but what is he missing that sets him apart from the most elite players at the position? After a look at a few of the reps between Cross and Garrett, we talk about the anticipation for the Christmas matchup and close with the news of Russell Wilson's retirement.  Support the show Get in the Flock! Seattle's division race shifts after the Rams acquire Myles Garrett, giving up Jared Verse plus a 2027 first, 2028 second and a future third, and the move jolts Super Bowl odds while raising questions about L.A.'s all-in window around Matthew Stafford. The conversation weighs how much better the Rams get, whether chemistry or injuries could blunt the impact, and if Seattle ever could—or should—have matched that kind of package, including a debate over what it would take to trade for a star edge like Maxx Crosby versus trusting long-term development and midseason value trades. The show also hits the Patriots' deal for A.J. Brown from the Eagles and what it means for Seattle's Week 1 matchup, while closing with confidence that the Seahawks remain the defending champions. Up, Down or Same: Looking Ahead to the 2026 Seahawks Defense

Today we're looking at the 2026 Seattle Seahawks defense and going through an "up, down, or same" exercise across key position groups. DeMarcus Lawrence was at practice today. Was the retirement buzz even a slight possibility? Safety sparks some early debate as we kick off the look across position groups. The loss of Coby Bryant matters, but Bud Clark's upside, plus staples like Julian Love and the role of Nick Emmanwori, keep the arrow trending steady with potential lift. Cornerback draws some concern after Tariq Woolen's departure, with Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe anchoring a thinner depth chart that leans on rookies and unproven options. The interior line, with Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy II, Jarran Reed, and rotational help from Riley Mills, has us wondering who may be on the outside looking in when it comes time for cuts. We close with edge and linebacker, and look ahead to the importance of maintaining premium interior disruption and disciplined run defense to keep the championship-level unit rolling next season.  Support the show Get in the Flock! List Season Kicks Off With Loads of Seahawks Disrespect

Is this year's "list season" going to be "disrespect season" for our reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks? We take a look at four recent Seahawks-related narratives in this week's show as 49ers fans react oddly to an "Lumen South" meme. The first "list" is a 2024 NFL redraft that sends Seattle away from Byron Murphy only to land on Braden Fiske. In what world is Fiske better than Byron Murphy? In other Rams news, Ian Rapoport is carrying water for the Rams by saying drafting Ty Simpson still "makes a ton of sense" after Matthew Stafford's extension. Finally, Mina Kimes and Ben Solak's 2026 QB draft board slots Sam Darnold 19th behind players like Kyler Murray and rookie Fernando Mendoza. Support the show Get in the Flock! 500: Seahawks Super Bowl Window Then vs. Now — Lessons John Schneider Learned

Sea Hawkers Podcast for Seattle Seahawks fans

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2026 109:35

Episode 500 looks back at the Seattle Seahawks previous championship window to spot what fueled the decline from back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. The conversation centers on three of John Schneider's costly inflection points from 2013 to 2015: the Percy Harvin trade and contract (and the draft opportunity cost), sacrificing trench stability by trading Pro Bowl center Max Unger for Jimmy Graham, and focusing on perimeter talent while missing on investments in the trenches. We revisit draft classes that produced limited impact in 2013 and 2014. And while the 2015 class was highlighted by Tyler Lockett and Frank Clark, they ended up moving on early from an offensive lineman who had a solid career with the Colts. We compare that era's heavy roster turnover to the current team's continuity. And Seattle appears to be avoiding splashy trades, prioritizing the right re-signings, and keeping flexibility to invest in the trenches to extend their window this time around. In the second half of the show, we talk more about the schedule release and the potential timeline for the return of Zach Charbonnet. We also thank our members of the flock who have helped get us to 500 episodes of the years. The "unfairness" of the schedule is the focus of the Do Better segment along with the continued idea of Sam Darnold having to live up to higher expectations. Better at Life honors go out to Dr. Bobby Wagner and an example of how Seahawks fans have an impact on each other outside of football. Support the show Get in the Flock! The 2026 NFL Schedule was released on Thursday and we're taking a week-to-week look at the Seattle Seahawks opponents this year. The season kicks off against the New England Patriots in a rematch of the Super Bowl before heading out on early road trips to Arizona and Washington. They have a stretch of prime time matchups against the Denver Broncos (Thursday), Kansas City Chiefs (Sunday), and Chicago Bears (Monday). Later in the season, we discuss three straight matchups against NFC East opponents before closing out with two of the final three games against the Los Angeles Rams. The Seahawks and Rams are the only two division rivals in the entire league who face each other twice in the final weeks of the season. As the Seahawks look to repeat this year, there are areas where they could slip after a championship season and reasons why they might still be even more dominant. Potential downside comes from opponents adjusting to Mike Macdonald's nickel-heavy run defense, statistical regression if Jaxon Smith-Njigba can't repeat his production, uncertainty around first-time play caller Brian Fleury, and possible special-teams regression. The optimism centers on expanded offensive weapons (A.J. Barner, Tory Horton, Rashid Shaheed), a chance for the offensive line to jump from average to top-10 with continuity, and defensive growth as Nick Emmanwori and Byron Murphy elevate alongside other core leaders. Finally, we recognize Mike Macdonald could still continue to grow and build the defense beyond what we saw last season. Support the show Get in the Flock! We revisit last year's discussion about Jalen Milroe and Robbie Ouzts before shifting to this year's Alabama draft class. We start with a look at wide receiver Germie Bernard as a potential third-round "Swiss Army knife" who wins from the slot or outside, contributes on special teams and rarely drops passes. On the offensive line, Parker Brailsford stands out as an athletic center/guard option who could push for snaps and be a possible long-term option in case the free agent center market gets out of control. Legal tampering (aka NFL Free Agency) kicks off this week with Seahawks fans bracing for potential departures. We may learn as soon as Monday whether we'll say our goodbyes to Kenneth Walker, Rashid Shaheed and others as the market tries to pull what they can from Seattle's championship roster. Safety Coby Bryant, by some reports, could be set to return. How does Kam Curl's deal set the bar? And what would be the reasoning for keeping Bryant with Ty Okada playing well off the bench in his absence? Seattle reportedly called the Eagles about Jalen Carter, but what does it really mean? Finally, Geno Smith's Seahawks legacy gets recognition from a Seattle columnist amid reports that he'll be cut by the Raiders at the start of free agency.  Support the show Get in the Flock! Free agency nears for the Seattle Seahawks after the NFL Combine. In NFC West news, the Rams acquiring All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Chiefs means they're going to continue to go all in. The Seahawks roster squeeze will be felt on special teams after reports that contract talks with return ace Rashid Shaheed aren't close. It's very likely he hits the market and we'll have to wonder if his special-teams value and his complementary receiver role can be filled by Tory Horton, through free agency or the draft. The discussion also covers Seattle's decision to allow Jake Bobo to test free agency, and the expectation that Drake Thomas merits a RFA tender. Finally, we close with thoughts on Kyler Murray exiting Arizona and speculation about Malik Willis as a potential Cardinals QB target.  Support the show Get in the Flock! Our Seattle Seahawks are kicking off free agency with five starters and two more key players potentially hitting the open market in two weeks at the start of the new league year. We run through some of the challenges general manager John Schneider faces with keeping each player and take a look at some of the projected salaries by The Athletic and Pro Football Focus. Kenneth Walker may have the biggest gap between how Seahawks fans would value him vs how he may be valued by another team, but a close second could be Boye Mafe. Mafe is considered one of the top 5 edge rushers in free agency, but his play time was limited in 2025 due to the play of Demarcus Lawrence and Uchenna Nwosu and Derick Hall. The amount of potential turnover in the secondary area of concern. Tariq Woolen, Josh Jobe and Coby Bryant are all expected to see contracts upward of $10 million per year and closer to $20 million per year in the case of Woolen. Is that the best use of salary cap dollars to try and keep all three? How would we prioritize? We take a look at the exclusive rights free agents and what that designation means as well as the restricted free agents and the one starter who stands out.  In the second half of the show, we talk about potential rule changes (and the lack of rule changes) that are being discussed in Indianapolis. We could see a greater emphasis placed on officiating from the booth than on the field for certain calls. We call out the Los Angeles Rams and Augusta National on news that came out this week about both. Better at Life honors go out to a company innovating battery technology and to YouTube for being a place to find Patriots fan tears, Niners fan tears and Rams fan tears all in one spot. The Seattle Seahawks are now two-time Super Bowl Champions and it still feels surreal. We're continuing the celebration with a full walkthrough of the win over New England and a preview of some of the major offseason topics. Seattle set the tone early, flipped field position through elite special teams, and leaned on a dominant defense that consistently harassed Drake Maye. Kenneth Walker kicked off his campaign for MVP early and the offensive line established their physicality on the first play of the game. Some outstanding plays by the Patriots defense kept Seattle out of the end zone in the first half, but Jason Myers was still able to help build a two-score cushion going into the half. The defense continued to overwhelm New England in the third quarter and held them scoreless. The contributions throughout the game included sacks by Devon Witherspoon, Byron Murphy, Derick Hall and rookie Rylie Mills. As Maye continued to get rattled, it led to key turnovers. Julian Love called his own interception as we saw in the mid'd up version of the Super Bowl. Byron Murphy recovered a fumble that led to the Seahawks only offensive touchdown by AJ Barner, and a Witherspoon pressure gave Uchenna Nwosu a score to match the Seahawks offensive touchdown output. We tackle the debate around Sam Darnold's performance—praised for poise against pressure and also criticized for a missed end-zone throw and a completion percentage that was among his lowest of the season. Offseason questions emerge along the way. How does Seattle sustain a title run? How should they handle some key free agents like Josh Jobe and Tariq Woolen? Do they need to approaches their big-money extensions for JSN and Witherspoon before making some of the more difficult decisions. Coaching and organizational themes surface too, from Mike McDonald's game planning and halftime adjustments to the team's continuity of culture. The episode closes with shout-outs to our members of the flock, listener emails, parade moments, and a nod to Jody Allen as the steady hand atop a championship organization. On the offensive side, Kenneth Walker delivered a performance worthy of his Super Bowl MVP honor. He set the tone with a run to the outside to start the game and added in some explosive plays throughout. The Seattle Seahawks enter Super Bowl Sunday as heavy favorites against the New England Patriots, and the confidence level among the 12s is high. The Patriots path to victory appears razor-thin, relying heavily on Drake Maye's mobility, hopes for multiple Seattle turnovers, and the chance that Jaxon Smith-Njigba can somehow be stopped by this New England defense that has only faced two of the league's best wideouts this season. The Pats offensive line faces a nightmare matchup against Seattle's defensive front led by Leo Williams and DeMarcus Lawrence. The Patriots postseason run—featuring wins over injury-depleted teams and bottom-tier offensive lines—pales in comparison to Seattle's gauntlet through the NFC West. Nick Emmanwori sustained an ankle injury this week, which does provide some concern for the defense. But we've seen how capable the depth of this defense was in dealing with Emmanwori's absense earlier in the season as well as the injury to Julian Love. Mike Macdonald should be able to plan around any limitations by the rookie defender. In an episode earlier this week, we enjoyed a guest with thoughful football analysis. In this show, we're getting into 'Know Your Rival' mode with one of the Patriots bitter rivals. Dolphins fan Sam Marcoux is back on the show to talk about everything we need to know about the Pats and their entitled fanbase.  Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak's impending departure to the Raiders has loomed over the leadup to this game. What potential impact could it actually have in this matchup? The NFL Honors ceremony was happening as we recorded and Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the only one to be awarded one of the top honors -- offensive player of the year. We discuss some of the wildest narratives and idiotic lines of questions in the Do Better Segment. Kenneth Walker III punched in the opening score, and the offense executed a masterful five-minute drive that helped close out the game. The defense came up big on a critical fourth-and-four stop, with Julian Love and DeMarcus Lawrence dropping into coverage to stuff the Rams attempt—a play Sean McVay dismissed as "luck" in his post-game comments. Riq Woolen's costly taunting penalty on third down helped give the Rams an opening, leading to an immediate Puka Nacua touchdown. Cooper Kupp proved instrumental in the Seahawks' success, making key third-down conversions against his former team after the Rams organization reportedly urged other teams to lowball him in free agency (which we later cover in the Do Better segment). The Seattle Seahawks punched their ticket to Super Bowl 60 with a 31-27 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship. We're breaking down the critical moments that swung the game. Kenneth Walker's bruising second-quarter run set the physical tone early. Maybe the turning point in the game came when rookie Nick Emmanwori delivered back-to-back pass breakups and forced a Rams punt. That helped to give Sam Darnold just enough time to march downfield and take a 17-13 halftime lead. Darnold's performance included a no-look pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba—the kind of throw typically reserved for Patrick Mahomes and Matthew Stafford. JSN's one-handed grab, a first-half reception through contact, and a deep catch to set up a touchdown, showcased why the Sam-to-JSN connection has become one of the league's most dangerous. The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers are back at it again -- now in the divisional round. Niners fans are somehow confident again, despite a narrow win over the Eagles. Is it because they think Kyle Shanahan rediscovered his good playbook? Or is it because they think Sam Darnold has already lost this game due to a minor injury? Maybe they've already forgotten they've been blaming an electromagnetic substation for team injuries. We take a look at the matchups on both sides and what has changed since Week 18. Trent Williams was back in the lineup against the Eagles, but the Niners lost their future HOF tight end in the process. Eric Kendricks was a major part of their defense in the last win, but can Fred Warner fire up the team by simply returning to practice? Wrapping up the show this week, we talk about Leo Williams request from the fans in the stands and the extra effort that can go into helping out the Seahawks defense.  Join our Sea Hawkers Podcast Pickem League - free prizes for weekly winners.
