In this nostalgia-drenched episode of Beat Motel, Andrew Culture and voiceover man extraordinaire Martin Whiskin hurl themselves headfirst into the deep, murky swimming pool of school memories—and promptly slip on a Verucca sock.Expect less of a structured discussion and more of a chaotic ramble through:Drinking out of pickle jars, Nutella jars, and possibly things we shouldn't mention.Childhood trauma via public service announcements that were more “accidental snuff film” than “safety first.”Rollerskating on dodgem floors, fights over tractors, and smoking on tractors. The weird tribal warfare between grunge kids and ravers (spoiler: bomber jackets were tactical gear). And yes, a deep dive into why the f**k “Funkytown” played on a school jukebox every single day.We also spin some musical back-to-school picks, featuring the Replacements, Pop Will Eat Itself, Ramones, Red Hot Chili Peppers (Martin is very sorry), Despond, and Ganja Kru. There's even a serious attempt to connect jungle music to GCSE coursework. God help us.Plus: We try to remember what Grange Hill was called, and forget everything else in the process. This one's for the misfits at the back of the classroom. The “Minneapolis Sound” is eclectic at its core. From the funktified innovations of Prince and André Cymone to the polished productions of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and the alt-rock fire of The Replacements, the scene always made space for everything—and everyone—even an offbeat band like Information Society. In 1982, the same year The Purple One invited us to party like it was 1999, InSoc burst onto the scene with a robotic synth style that recalled Kraftwerk, early Devo, and Gary Numan. Paul Robb, Kurt Larson, and James Cassidy embraced the DIY ethos of punk, quickly building a loyal following. But true recognition didn't come until the band relocated to New York City, where they forged their signature sound—a fusion of electro and pulsating dance beats that launched them onto the charts. With the guidance of seasoned producer Fred Marr, the trio absorbed everything around them, from radio staples to late-night TV static. Armed with samples—and a certain '60s sci-fi phenomenon like Star Trek—Paul Robb crafted InSoc's pop breakout hit, a track that dominated clubs from L.A. to Rio and beyond. It set the foundation for the group's unique brand of intellectual, tech-driven pop, a sound that remains as vibrant today as ever. Like what you hear? Show some love and send a text. #CheersReels, Booze & Bro's, RB2Podcast, huddles up for one of the most fun underdog sports comedies of the 2000s — The Replacements. Keanu Reeves steps onto the field as Shane Falco, a former college star turned boat-washing nobody, who gets one last shot at glory when a strike forces the Washington Sentinels to fill their roster with misfits, oddballs, and outright lunatics. We break down the film's best moments, from the jailhouse dance scene to Gene Hackman's grizzled wisdom, and we debate whether this comedy holds up as one of the great football flicks or if it's just a guilty-pleasure popcorn watch. Of course, we pair it with some booze-worthy brews as always — because no Sentinels game is complete without a cold one in hand.

By 1985, The Replacements had seen and done a few things. They'd recorded a couple of records (see our review of Let It Be at 40) and been out on some tours. They'd made enough noise that they were signed to major label Sire and were ready to take on the world with bigger shows, music videos and tv appearances. But wait, were they? The boys were still drinking heavily thanks to Bob Stinson and Paul Westerberg's crippling stagefright. They still hated doing any kind of promotion, which they saw as selling out and not punk. And when they finally made it on Saturday Night Live in early 1986 to promote their 1985 classic, Tim, they were banned for life for Westerberg's use of the f word on live tv. However, Westerberg's poignant songwriting and raspy vocals were at the top of their game and Tim is considered a true masterpiece of the 1980s. It may not have even gone gold, but songs like Hold My LIfe, Kiss Me On The Bus and Dose of Thunder not only showed that they could arrange a quality pop song but could address issues that may be in juxtaposition from their hard rockin punk riffs. Swingin Party talks about how hard it is to be an introvert in forced social situations, Little Mascara is the tale of a girl with bad taste in men who loses nothing when her loser guy finally leaves her and Left Of The Dial captures life on the road between college towns for a band trying to make it. Originally, the album had a bad mix. However, thanks to a 2023 remix as part of a box set from Ed Stasium, these songs can now be heard clearly and loud the way they were always supposed to be heard. As Tim turns 40, we celebrate what is likely The Replacements greatest achievement and go track by track to show why everyone should be familiar with this 1985 gem. Last week’s look at what’s been spinning on the Hudson turntable was so fun that I thought we’d do it again. This week’s version, though, differs in that it also includes some digital treats. The announcement from the Numero Group of the upcoming Husker Du box, 1985 The Miracle Year was a no-brainer when it was accompanied by four more new sneak peaks. And I couldn’t stop myself from playing soem of the previously-released rarities that will again feature on the upcoming box set version of The Replacements’ Let It Be. But there are also a couple of great compilation albums that deserved some notice. First off, there’s the latest free release from our friends at Rum Bar Records. The Summer School Sampler features 34 tracks of brand new or recently-released material, and like I said it’s free! And the 15th volume of Bored Teenagers compiles rare British punk singles from 1976-83! Along with these fun tunes I also aired quite a few more faves that have recently hit my turntable. What’s your favorite from this week’s show? For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

On this week's show, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run, spend quality time with new records from Superchunk and Charley Crockett and spin fresh tracks from Ivy, The Last Dinner Party and Margo Price. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.
If you happen to follow me on social media (and why wouldn’t you?) you have probably noticed that every week I post a collage of some of the albums I’ve listened to over the course of the week that I note as from “the Hudson Compound”. Well, tonight’s show is an audio version of one of those collages. Every track I played tonight comes from a record that has either been on my turntable, in my earbuds during walks, or blasting in my car as I run errands. These 32 songs represent almost 60 years of great rock and roll, but there are a couple of somewhat new tunes. First off, earlier this week Rhino Records announced an upcoming box set version of my third favorite album of all time, Let It Be. The 3 CD/4 LP box, which comes out on October 24, includes an entire disc of rarities and outtakes and a full show from The Cubby Bear in Chicago. This announcement was accompanied by one of the outtakes – an alternate version of “Androgynous” that kicks off the show. The other new tunes (at least to me) comes right after that track. A few weeks ago our […]

The Replacements is a movie that probably isn't amazing but it's one that we both enjoyed watching many times. We both were still playing high school football when this came out, so it had a pretty big impact on us. And pretty sure that this is the first film we've discussed since Gene Hackman's passing. This one features just the two of us. Enjoy!

In this clip, Ed walks us through remixing the Ramones catalog in Atmos and how he used Eventide's immersive plugins to both stay true to the original recordings and bring them to new life in the spatial audio arena.

A teenage bass-playing f*ck-up prodigy. A big brother in an ill-fitting bodysuit on national television. A drummer playing chicken with the cops on his motorcycle. And one of the greatest singer-songwriters to ever pick up a guitar and stumble towards a microphone. These were the Replacements: shambolic and chaotic, just like the best rock ‘n roll often is. In 1986, the Minneapolis quartet delivered a legendary performance on Saturday Night Live – one which ensured their short-term demise while cementing their long-term legacy. What other bands or artists should have made it big, but never did? Are there other examples of self-sabotage in music history?
