Our guest Chris Stamey's new album is called Anything Is Possible, and during long and fruitful musical career, he's done just about everything. As a founding member of The dB's he helped define an era of 1970s indie rock and power pop, and his solo work (and duo work with his fellow dB Peter Holsapple) only widened his songwriting vocabulary. Among the distinguished guests joining Stamey on Anything Is Possible are another NC music legend Mitch Easter, plus some friends of the podcast, including The Lemon Twigs, Pat Sansone (Wilco), Marshall Crenshaw, and many more. Lately, Chris has been 1/5th of the Big Star Quintet, performing the music of Big Star (with original drummer Jody Stephens) and this year, he'll release an album with The Salt Collective, in partnership with French musician Stéphane Schück. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. In this episode we talk to Adam Duritz, singer for the long-running, much celebrated band Counting Crows, about everything from his love of the band Big Star to doing podcasts rather than traditional interviews to promote new albums and tours. Counting Crows are best known for the songs “Mr Jones” from their 1993 debut August and Everything After and “A Long December” from the follow-up, 1996's Recovering the Satellites. Their latest, the excellent Butter Miracle, the Complete Sweets! was released in May, which lead up to a 2025 tour that started June 10 and extends to Nov. 1, taking the band through theaters and amphitheaters in the U.S. and Canada before heading off to Europe for about a month and a half. Interview with Chris Stamey. Chris Stamey began writing and playing music in grade school in Winston-Salem, NC, in the mid 1960s, in what is known now as the Combo Corner scene. In 1976, while studying music composition at UNC-Chapel Hill, he self-released Sneakers, one of the very first American “indie” records. The following year, he relocated to Manhattan to play and record with Alex Chilton in the burgeoning CBGB rock scene, then formed The dB's with fellow Carolinians Will Rigby, Gene Holder, and Peter Holsapple, with whom he made several acclaimed records of original material, including Stands for deciBels (self-produced with Alan Betrock) and Repercussion (produced by Scott Litt). During the next decade and a half in New York, Stamey worked with a wide variety of musicians. He recorded well-received solo records for A&M and Warners and was a part of Anton Fier's Golden Palominos project, alongside an international touring cast that included Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), Jack Bruce (Cream), Carla Bley, and Bernie Worrell (Talking Heads, George Clinton). He continued recording and producing upon returning to NC in 1993. His recent releases include The Great Escape, Lovesick Blues and Euphoria, as well as Falling Off the Sky with The dB's and A Brand-New Shade of Blue with the Fellow Travelers. As a producer and a featured singer/songwriter with the Paris-based Salt Collective project, he collaborated with Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Juliana Hatfield, Richard Lloyd (Television), Matthew Sweet, Peter Holsapple, and Susan Cowsill, among others. As a producer, arranger, and mixer, he has worked with over a hundred artists, including Ryan Adams, Alejandro Escovedo, Kronos Quartet, Flat Duo Jets, Skylar Gudasz, Branford Marsalis, Tift Merritt, Le Tigre, Those Pretty Wrongs, and Yo La Tengo. From 2010-2018, Stamey was orchestrator and musical director for an international series of concert performances of Big Star's classic album Third, alongside Big Star's Jody Stephens, Ray Davies, members of the Posies, R.E.M., Teenage Fanclub, Wilco, and Yo La Tengo; Thank You, Friends, a concert film of these arrangements, was released by Concord in March 2017. He currently tours as a member of Jody Stephens's Big Star Quintet, whose line-up includes Mike Mills (R.E.M), Pat Sansone (Wilco), and Jon Auer (Posies). His original radio musical about the early '60s in Manhattan, Occasional Shivers, premiered nationwide on Christmas Day 2016. A “songwriting memoir,” A Spy in the House of Loud (Univ. of Texas Press), was published in 2018, followed in 2019 by his first printed collection, New Songs for the 20th Century, with a companion two-disc CD (Omnivore Recordings). open.spotify.com/artist/1i7YYagcULgnW5Qilsto1d music.apple.com/us/artist/chris-stamey/4034250 youtube.com/channel/UCG3O3S8Zg_WJoz2uTt_duig# instagram.com/mrstamey/?hl=en facebook.com/chrisstameymusic/ twitter.com/chrisstamey songkick.com/artists/186319-chris-stamey bandsintown.com/a/78299-chris-stamey deezer.com/us/artist/1279457 tidal.com/browse/artist/3611403 qobuz.com/us-en/interpreter/chris-stamey/515742 audiomack.com/chris-stamey music.amazon.com/artists/B008LPNC4M @chris-stamey.bsky.social

What are your most favorite and least-loved songs on the Replacements bootleg Shit, Shower and Shave? Adam chose this fan-favorite live recording by a band that Sam started steering him towards when they met in the 90s. Because they're such huge fans, there is almost an hour of fun stories about shows, corn and iconic logos plus Adam gets into the history of "Italian imports" before we even hit the ranks. Matt Tomich from the long-running Skyway mailing list joins from Switzerland to teach us about the band and share his favorites from the Connecticut stop on an infamous 1989 tour with Tom Petty. Ever wonder what it's like to be part of rock history? Our latest LaunchLeft episode pulls back the curtain on Big Star's legacy. Rain Phoenix hosts an illuminating conversation with Jody Stephens, drummer of the legendary band Big Star. The discussion delves into Jody's early musical influences in Memphis, his experiences with Big Star, and the band's enduring legacy. Jody shares insights about recording at Ardent Studios and working with John Fry, offering a glimpse into the creation of Big Star's iconic sound. Jody then launches Luther Russell. They discuss their collaboration in their band Those Pretty Wrongs, exploring their songwriting process and creative dynamic. Luther provides additional perspective on their partnership and his own musical journey. The episode also touches on Jody's recent induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame and Luther's latest solo album. Throughout, the conversation highlights the importance of maintaining a joyful, pressure-free approach to creativity in music. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Introducing Jody Stevens of Big Star (05:21) Jody’s early musical influences in Memphis (09:06) Rain on discovering Big Star in Costa Rica (15:22) John Fry's influence on Big Star's iconic sound (24:17) Working at Ardent Studios after Big Star (31:49) Changes in the music industry over time (47:50) Luther Russell is launched (49:17) Collaborative songwriting process for the band (56:32) Recording at Abbey Road with John Leckie (59:52) Luther Russell's new solo album Happiness for Beginners (1:02:39) Upcoming shows and future recording plans KEY TAKEAWAYS: Music creation should be a joyful, pressure-free process. By focusing on having fun and avoiding self-imposed stress, artists can collaborate effectively long-distance and produce multiple albums together. This approach has allowed creativity to flow naturally. The music industry has changed dramatically, but there are still "gatekeepers" in new forms. While technology has democratized distribution, the sheer volume of content makes it challenging to break through. Having a passionate fanbase who will share your music remains crucial. Revisiting and performing older material can lead to unexpected new creative partnerships. What started as playing some shows together to support a documentary evolved into a fruitful songwriting collaboration and multiple albums. Being open to these opportunities can take your career in exciting new directions. RESOURCE LINKS: LaunchLeft Podcast Smart Link JODY STEPHENS BIO: Jody Stephens (born October 4, 1952, in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American drummer best known as a founding member of the influential power pop band Big Star. Formed in 1971, Big Star’s original lineup included Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Andy Hummel, and Stephens. The band released three albums—#1 Record (1972), Radio City (1974), and Third/Sister Lovers (recorded in 1974, released in 1978)—which, despite initial commercial struggles, later garnered critical acclaim and influenced numerous artists . In 1993, he participated in a reformation of the band alongside Chilton and members of The Posies, resulting in the 2005 album In Space. Beyond Big Star, Stephens has collaborated with various groups. He joined the alt-country supergroup Golden Smog (with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco), contributing to albums like Weird Tales (1998) and Another Fine Day (2006) . In 2015, he formed Those Pretty Wrongs with Luther Russell, releasing their self-titled debut in 2016, followed by Zed for Zulu (2019) and Holiday Camp (2023) . Stephens has also been a longtime fixture at Ardent Studios in Memphis, where Big Star recorded their albums. He joined the Ardent staff in 1987 and has served as Vice President of Production am— and other titles, working under founder John Fry (who died in 2014 at age 69). Under his tenure, Ardent has continued to be a vital recording venue for artists across genres. Today, Jody Stephens remains active in music, performing, recording, and contributing to the legacy of Big Star and Ardent Studios (he still works at Ardent). He is the last surviving member of Big Star’s original lineup, but still plays the music with the Big Star Quartet at shows across the world.

Could Murphy be the key to this Seahawks' defense in his sophomore season? :30- ABCs of the Mariners - D is for Deep- we've thought the M's lineup had the potential to be deep, but it's amazing what getting one bat back can do. Luke Raley + Donovan Solano = success? Don't get us wrong, we still want to add someone before the deadline! - E is for Eduard- we've got to hand it to Bazardo, he's coming through this season. He's got an ERA under 3 and he's been put in some fairly high-leverage situations. - F is for frozen- have they frozen Muni in his current state and he's just in the back on ice? We've only seen him 4 times this month. :45- Caitlin Clark is in town tonight as the Fever face the Storm and her star is still shining bright, but how bright is it? On today's episode of BIG Star Monday
My intermittent series on something either denied classic status on release, or has been forgotten about since. I wanted to review this all time fave but struggled to know if it belonged here. It DID get classic status, but many years after it was made, and that was the 90s. Since then the final, notorious and never conclusively released final album from Alex Chilton's power-pop inventing Big Star, has faded from view. Like Nick Drake around the same time period, they released two classic, hugely influential, critically acclaimed albums, that sold nothing and left them to produce one final angry, dejected, hopeless finale. Often ranked as one of the darkest and most harrowing of albums, it's shot through with brilliance and bitter beauty.
If you're an avid podcast listener, you've likely heard one of Richard Fidler's Conversations. For 20 years he's been chatting with people from all walks of life, making the Conversations podcast one of the most popular in Australia. So as they mark this big 20th birthday, I thought it'd be fun to flip the mic on Richard. Because his story begins long ago, as a founding member of the Doug Anthony Allstars, and host of Race Around the World. In 2016 Richard published his first non fiction book Ghost Empire, and since then has written three more (Saga Land, Golden Maze, and The Book of Roads and Kingdoms). He is a curious soul, a master storyteller, and you're about to relish in his tales.T. It isn't all good news, though, as burger lovers took a hit with the recent announcement that Dairyland will leave (or, rather, was asked to leave) the Third Street Market Hall.We return to sunnier topics as Ann takes us on a nostalgic road trip through Wisconsin's historic drive-ins, sharing favorite spots like Ardy & Ed's in Oshkosh and Big Star in Kenoha, as well as the unique experience of car hops and frosted root beer mugs. On this episode of On That Note, I'm joined by Atlanta-based artist and producer Mad Ace..., a sonic architect known for his experimental approach to synths and genre-bending production. With deep roots in the indie scene through his work with Athens-turned-Atlanta rock outfit Wieuca, Mad Ace... has spent years crafting sounds that toe the line between chaos and cohesion. He's gearing up for the release of his new album Heartcrymes, dropping June 28th—a deeply personal yet playfully glitched-out project that blends emotional storytelling with warped electronic textures. His newest single “Big Star” is out now, complete with an accompanying music video that dives headfirst into his offbeat visual world. We get into all of that and more—his production roots, evolution as a songwriter, and how the Atlanta DIY scene continues to shape his creative voice.

The 1990s was a particularly exciting time in Australian rock music. The musical movements that started in the US and the UK in the 90s have been well documented (particularly in reference to certain bands), but not so much has been written about the purple patch of creativity that took place in Australia over that decade. Over the last few years, my guest for this episode has taken it upon himself to rectify that, showing particular dedication to his favourite band....that just happens to be of that decade. Welcome to episode 185 of Love That Album. I'll make a confession here.....my 90s musical choices were probably different to many of the artists that were part of that purple patch, but it is undeniable how new and innovative bands were becoming – partly influenced by what happened in Seattle, but so much was independent of what was happening overseas. The Whitlams, Regurgitator, The Cruel Sea, The Fauves, Something For Kate and some kids from Newcastle were amongst many that were a huge part of the landscape. One band in particular, though, had the knack of combining 90s with the 60s and the 70s. You Am I fronted by the extremely charismatic Tim Rogers started out grunge. In short order, though, they moved away from that to write and perform songs that combined rock aggression with melodicism, and could also write a “tear in your beer” ballad. (Big Star mixed with Hellacopters and The Replacements.....my opinion and I'm sticking with it). You Am I released 3 albums in a row that went to number 1 on the charts.....no other Australian band had ever done that. Yet, in the US and Europe, they remained a cult act. Danny Yau is the host of Just Ace, a podcast dedicated to documenting the 90s Australian alternative music scene – whatever the hell that means (IYKYK). He's also You Am I's number 1 fan, and accidental archivist. I invited Danny to join me to discuss You Am I's 6th album (and their second one after the 90s) Deliverance. The band always made the music they wanted, but with no support from their major label forthcoming, they decided to make an album with no consideration to label requirements. It would have been easy to chat about the albums they're most associated with HiFi Way and Hourly Daily (both 10 out of 10 records), but we do things differently on this little show. Danny and I discuss a myriad of things including the Melbourne–Sydney rivalry, the difference between how Australians and Americans define “rooting”, songs of sadness and joy, and what the 90s meant in terms of Australian music.....and we do a hell of a lot of You Am I talk.....some of it in relation to our focus album, Deliverance. We ran out of time towards the end, but I had a ton of fun chatting with Danny, and we've even agreed on a future episode of See Hear Podcast he's going to join Tim, Kerry and myself on – discussing a film about a fictional 90s band....of course. Omnivore Recordings co-founder and four-time Gramny-winning producer Cheryl Pawelski has figured out how to do what she loves for a living. She went from obsessing about music in Milwaukee to having great adventures in the "floater pool" at Capitol Records in Los Angeles. With stints at Rhino and Concord as well, she oversaw ambitious reissues by, among others, the Band, Big Star, the Smithereens, the Beach Boys, Pat Benatar, Nina Simone and the Miles Davis Quintet. Her long association with Wilco has included deluxe boxes for Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (which won a Grammy) and, earlier this year, A Ghost Is Born. She won another Grammy for the 2023 7-CD set Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos. She recounts it all with the passion of a fan, even as she deals with the challenges of running a record label and the recent loss of her Altadena home in the Southern California wildfires. Deck the halls with beers and Stoli! The nutcracker of scrutiny was applied to this week's noisettes of news and the following discussed over a glass of port … ... are a lot of new song catalogues just blogs set to music? … can any actor be convincing playing someone really famous? … Robbie Williams' Better Man: it's the way forward! Who can his CGI's monkey play next? … why no-one writes songs with opinions anymore. … Lola Young's ‘charming' press release. ... when Elvis met Nixon (and was “crackling with drugs”). … why we miss the one pound note! … Dickens, Bing Crosby and why the concept of Christmas is rooted in the past. … is part of the joy of Powerpop that it's doomed to commercial failure? Big Star, the Shoes – perfect; Blondie – too successful! … St James Infirmary, I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, Stormy Monday – and other great songs about money - ‘These shabby shoes I'm wearing all the time/ Is full of holes and nails and brother if I stepped on a worn out dime/ I bet a nickel I could tell you if it was heads or tails'. … the return of “a bankroll big enough to choke a donkey”. … plus Hank Williams, Brenda Lee, Tom Waits and birthday guest Kevin Walsh wonders ‘what's the classic Powerpop look and sound and who are its standard-bearers?' WARNING: EXTREMELY SENSITIVE CONTENT Ken Stringfellow was a founding member of the Posies, who enjoyed a long career as one of the best power pop bands of the 90s and beyond. He also held down recurring gigs with REM, Big Star, Giant Sand and many others as well as a solo career. In 2021 this was all upended when three women accused him of sexual assault. Since then almost all of his musical partners have distanced themselves from him and he's had to (almost) start over from scratch. This year he released his first album since his world imploded called Circuit Breaker which is about as primal a creative response to this as you'll ever hear. Ken joins us this week to tell his side of the story. It's a tricky subject that we chose to approach journalistically and neutrally. We apologize in advance if anyone is triggered by this conversation as that was not our intention. www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod www.rainn.org/resources www.kenstringfellow.com
