“I look back on that moment as the single most important moment of my life.” Quite a thing to say about the day you died. On December 21, 2012, Greg Long suffered a three-wave hold-down at Cortez Bank and clinically drowned. Greg was wearing the first iteration of the flotation vest developed by Shane Dorian and Billabong. He yanked the trigger, but it didn't inflate. He tried again. And again. Nothing. No air came. The vest was faulty. His team found him, and he was brought back from the brink. The vest emerged around 2012, as paddle surfing began pushing into territory that had previously been reserved for tow surfing. Sion Milosky's death made the risks harder to dismiss. If the pursuit was going to continue, they needed a way out when things went bad. Greg eventually began working with Patagonia. After years of R&D, they released the first PSI vest to the public in 2017. Nobody has drowned while wearing one. Now, nearly a decade later, they're releasing its second iteration. Alongside the new vest, Patagonia and Stab are releasing Inflation Point, coming soon to Stab Premium. Greg joins us at the desk to talk about the new film, the experience of drowning, the importance of safety, and the paradox of the PSI vest: the safer you make something, the more tempting it can become to push further. Greg says more people are paddling out underprepared, convinced they're harder to kill than they are, with the vest as a kind of guardian angel. It was never meant to be used that way. We also hear from fellow big-wave surfer Izzi Gomez, who recently released Chrysalis, a film about her own journey with big-wave surfing and mental health. The New Intellectual Book Study is a free book club discussing For the New Intellectual, by Ayn Rand. This week our reading was pages 164–177. Here John Galt explains the reason that the nation’s producers are going on strike. He points to the evil of the moral code that dominates society, the code of other-ism (philosophical altruism). Galt says, “We who were the living buffers between you and the nature of your creed are no longer there to save you from the effects of your chosen beliefs. We are no longer willing to pay with our lives the debts you incurred in yours.” This is a confrontational section. It is the call to action. About the Book Study: Today's society is degenerating into a cult of despair. Not even churches are immune. In For the New Intellectual, Ayn Rand gave a brilliant overview of the status of Western culture, what brought us here, and how to bring a second Renaissance. The book is a good first or second read for someone wanting to understand Ayn Rand's Objectivism. 美國全國餐飲業會的最新數字顯示，2024年 full service 餐廳的稅前盈利中位數只有2.8%，limited service 的快餐業都只有4%。做一百蚊生意，真正落袋的可能只有三四蚊，還未計算雪櫃壞了、租金加了、最低工資加了這些突發事。將一百蚊拆開來看，大概三成用在食材，三成用在人工，兩條數加起來已經去了六成幾，全服務餐廳的比例還會再拉開一點。這是一門出了名的 high fixed cost、high operating risk、low margin 生意。為什麼由 2014 到 2024 這十年間，私募基金會向美國的餐飲業投入接近945億美金？Roark 用 113 億買了Dunkin'，再用 96 億買了 Subway；Blackstone 在自己的報告都表示，Franchise 這個模式是他們的高信念投資範疇。私募基金入場，買的不是漢堡包、三文治或是墨西哥菜，他們買的其實是一套可以製造穩定現金流的機器。一間餐廳自己經營，見到的是店鋪開支、人工、租金，賺剩那條數才是你自己的。但當這間餐廳變成一盤 Franchise 生意，「玩法」就完全不同；資本那邊不需要理會日常營運那堆頭痛事，只做資本密集的事：收固定加盟費，加上一個與利潤掛勾的分成。你生意做得好，他有得分；做得不好，他還是有得分。麥當勞就是最清楚的例子。好多人以為麥當勞是做漢堡包，但它全球 45356 間分店，95%都是 Franchise 出去，自己收租才是主業。加盟費一年收 60 億美金，物業租金就收 104 億。當然，不是只有財技一條路。In-N-Out 與 Raising Cane's 這類公司選擇自己經營，不上市、不賣加盟權，一樣做到規模效益。In-N-Out 更加是典型例子：一直自己控制供應鏈，牛肉要求 never frozen，新分店只可以開在養牛場方圓一百里之內；這個條件令它擴張得很慢，431 間分店，與其他連鎖店動輒過千間相比顯得小，但每間店的 AUV 高達六百萬美金，冠絕同業。它寧願慢，也不會為了規模而犧牲自己的供應鏈標準。馬克思主義者批評，資本天生就是擴張性的；他們未必反對個體戶買賣，問題在資本本身。這個講法其實頗有根據，換了在商業經營的語言，就是怎樣多開幾間店鋪、怎樣多收幾個客。不過，新開的餐廳，捱夠三年站得穩的機會，其實只有一半。為什麼仍然這麼多人入行？如果入行的目的是由小做起，之後做大盤生意賣給人，這條數本身就與私募基金玩的是同一個遊戲。平時講「餐飲業」，好似它是一個單一的行業，但是當 division of labour、資本市場與Franchising 發展到某個程度，同一個「餐飲業」背後其實已經有好多完全不同的生意模式：有人賺煮飯的錢，有人賺品牌的錢，有人賺租金，有人賺供應鏈，有人賺利息，有人賺Royalty，還有人可以將未來的 Royalty 包裝成資產。餐廳，可以同時是一門很差的生意，亦是一門很好的投資；關鍵只是你站在 cash-flow waterfall 哪一層：賣漢堡包不如賣franchise，賣franchise不如賣股票。 This is a public episode. In For the New Intellectual, Ayn Rand gave a brilliant overview of the status of Western culture, what brought us here, and how to bring a second Renaissance. The book is a good first or second read for someone wanting to understand Ayn Rand's Objectivism. Rand offered the book as a collection of the essential ideas in her philosophy “for those who wish to acquire an integrated view of existence.” Rand's goal was to advocate against mysticism, altruism, and collectivism, and for their opposites: reason, individualism, and capitalism. This book study was designed for Christians interested in understanding Rand's work and finding out where her insights can be valuable specifically to Christians.
