In Matthew 28, Jesus gives the "Great Commision", empowering his disciples to GO and make disciples of all the nations. What is the mark of a disciple? How can we know if we've arrived if we don't know the destination?
Because the disciples waited in faith for 10 days, the Spirit was poured out upon, the Church was born and the world was forever changed. Acts. 2

Send us Fan MailHuman genetic variation in dietary fat metabolism and its implications for health & disease.TOPICS DISCUSSED:Linoleic Acid Rise: Linoleic acid now comprises 6-8% or more of energy in Western diets.Metabolic Pathways: Omega-6 linoleic acid converts to arachidonic acid and pro-inflammatory oxylipins; omega-3 ALA converts via shared enzymes to EPA/DHA with anti-inflammatory effects.FADS Genetic Variants: Ancestry-linked haplotypes in the FADS cluster create large “pipe” size differences, altering fatty acid by up to 40% between ancestral and derived versions.Population Differences: African ancestry populations often have high-conversion “big pipe” genotypes; Indigenous American ancestry populations have low-conversion “small pipe” genotypes; European ancestry comes with a mix of both.Omega-3 Deficiency: High linoleic intake suppresses EPA production, especially in small-pipe populations, contributing to hypertriglyceridemia and fatty liver in Mexican cohorts.Clinical Evidence: Reanalysis of VITAL trial showed 83% reduction in myocardial infarction with omega-3 supplementation in African Americans; Mexican data link low EPA to unique diabetes forms.Methodological Issues: Compositional data (from GC-FID measurements) versus absolute concentration measurements can flip relationships between linoleic acid and key biomarkers.ABOUT THE GUEST: Floyd Chilton PhD is Professor and Director of the Center for Precision Nutrition and Wellness at the University of Arizona. If you seek to live for God, how well could you handle resistance or persecution? A prevailing theme of 1 Peter is suffering for the sake of Jesus. He is writing to a deeply persecuted people. Many of his readers have lost mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. Everyone had someone they had lost to religious violence, largely precipitated by Rome or Jewish religious leaders. We are able to worship freely because others paid the price so we could stand here today and proclaim freely the Gospel of Jesus Christ, here and around the world. Spiritual freedom precedes civic freedom. What do you think brought down that Berlin Wall? Or that a revival was happening in tandem with the American revolution? During WWII, families that lost a family member would get a letter from General Eisenhower or Harry Truman. The letter would accompany a gold star for their lapel to signify that they were a gold star family. As sobering and painful as that must have been, imagine getting a letter from the apostle Peter. But instead of condolences, Peter also encourages his reader: maintain focus. Every person dies, but not every person truly lives. Those who die for Jesus have truly lived. How so? Arm yourself with the same attitude Jesus had. When I arm myself with something, I strap it to my body. To arm means it becomes part of you

when we show forgiveness, meekness, humility in the face of oppression, we are exhibiting the ultimate form of human weakness, and conversely exhibiting the highest form of behavior as a citizen of heaven. When you show forgiveness in the face of oppression, you are putting your life in the hands of God and essentially saying to your enemy, “The Lord rebuke you. Its in His hands, not mine any longer.”
Being stuck is the worst. FEELING stuck in life is also the worst. When you're stuck, the worst thing to do is push the accelerator and dig the hold deeper. Maybe try something different. Life can be hard or hard, so you might as well do the hard thing for God rather than yourself.

In today's episode, Claire is joined by Bruce Chilton to discuss his book Aramaic Jesus with Baylor University Press. Bruce Chilton's Aramaic Jesus is a groundbreaking study in pursuit of this "Aramaic Jesus," a pursuit that requires awareness of the kind of Aramaic in play. In the past, sorting out dialects and types of Aramaic relied on sources composed well after the time of the New Testament; this work factors in analysis of the Dead Sea Scrolls and related materials to access forms of Aramaic current during the first century CE. Since the depiction of Jesus in the Gospels involves various intersections with Aramaic, tracing the impact of Aramaic in the depiction of Jesus within the New Testament entails several investigative categories: specific cases in which Aramaic is identifiably transliterated within the Greek Gospels; analysis that accounts for the cultural settings of Aramaic through the technique of retroversion (involving translation back into Aramaic); and assessment of noticeable overlaps between the New Testament and contemporaneous Aramaic literature, where thematic emphases emerge that relate Jesus' movement to Second Temple Judaism. The writings we call the Gospels involved transitions from the au/orality of Jesus and his movement to reliance upon writing, and from their language(s) to written Koine Greek. Those shifts involved an increasing resort to narrative and literary conventions. The extent to which Aramaic is a factor within this process is uncharted, and this volume clarifies the issues that are in play. Chilton's analysis illuminates the Aramaic Jesus and the people and processes that conveyed his memory. Bruce Chilton is Bell Professor of Religion at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson and priest at the Free Church of St. John the Evangelist in Barrytown, New York. He is the author of many scholarly articles and books.

In Episode 135, the guys crack open a Chilton from TUPPS Brewery and things get weird… fast.Jake brings five ice breakers to the table, but this time, it's not just the crew deciding… we're riding with the popular vote, which leads to some unexpected (and questionable) outcomes.Stone turns up the heat with some intense life questions for Jorge, forcing him into the hot seat for answers he probably wasn't ready to give. And just when you think it couldn't get any stranger… a fan slides into the DMs with an offer to pay for burping videos. Naturally, the guys start tracking every burp like it's a running tab, trying to figure out just how profitable this new “business model” could be.Cold beer, wild questions, and a whole lot of burps, just another perfectly normal episode of Two Beers and a Mic.

Your hope is only as powerful as its object. All people need hope. In Christ your hope is never misplaced.
What if everything you thought you knew about how Jesus read the Bible was incomplete? In this eye-opening conversation, we sit down with Dr. Bruce Chilton, the Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Religion at Bard College and the first scholar to write a critical commentary on the Aramaic Isaiah Targum. Dr. Chilton reveals a hidden world that most Christians have never encountered—the Aramaic Targums, the interpretive paraphrases of Scripture that Jesus actually heard and used in first-century synagogues. These weren't word-for-word translations; they were dynamic, expansive interpretations that shaped how Jesus understood and taught about God's kingdom, the suffering servant, and the very nature of Scripture itself. This conversation will completely reframe how you read both the Old Testament and the Gospels. Dr. Chilton walks us through specific examples where Jesus quotes Targumic readings, explains why the religious leaders opposed him so fiercely, and shows how understanding this tradition unlocks passages that have puzzled Christians for centuries. From the vineyard parable to Jesus' Nazareth sermon, from his debates with Pharisees to Paul's bilingual mastery, you'll discover that the Bible Jesus knew was far more dynamic and alive than the static text many of us assume. This is scholarly depth made accessible, and it will change the way you engage with Scripture forever. In this episode you will learn:- What Targums are and why they've remained hidden from most Christians for centuries- How first-century synagogues functioned and what Jesus would have actually heard when Scripture was read- Why Jesus' understanding of "the Kingdom of God" came directly from Targumic theology, not from thin air- How to distinguish between original Hebrew text and interpretive Targumic expansions- Specific examples where Jesus quotes Targumic readings that completely change how we understand Gospel passages- Why the Isaiah Targum interprets the "suffering servant" differently than most Christians expect- How Jesus' debates with Pharisees were actually insider arguments over Targumic interpretations- What's really happening in Jesus' Nazareth sermon when he reads from Isaiah and claims fulfillment- Why Jesus spoke in parables and how the Targum reveals his true motivation- How the vineyard parable in Mark 12 directly connects to the Isaiah Targum's teaching about the templeDr. Bruce Chilton's Books:A Galilean Rabbi and His BibleTargums and Rabbinic Literature (Zondervan)Rabbi Jesus: An Intimate BiographyConnect with The Dig In Podcast:Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thejohnnyovaFollow Johnny Ova: https://linktr.ee/johnnyovaGet Johnny's book, The Revelation Reset: https://a.co/d/hiUkW8H

Emily keeps pushing Rory to make the rounds and socialize, but Rory finally snaps and asks her to leave her alone—which really hurts Emily's feelings.Lorelai goes to comfort Rory in her old childhood bedroom, and they bond over the pressure Emily always puts on them.On their way out, Rory apologizes to Emily and invites her to the Stars Hollow party the next night. Emily responds coldly, which leads to a huge argument between Lorelai and Emily about what it really means to love someone without expectations or pressure. The next night, it's party time in Stars Hollow! The whole town shows up—and everyone is shocked when Emily and Richard arrive too. It quickly becomes clear that Emily doesn't really know Lorelai's life at all.Dean shows up and gives Rory a gift, and they hold hands while Lorelai watches nervously.Things escalate quickly when Rory runs into Dean at the grocery store and THEY KISS. She rushes off to tell Lane, but decides not to tell Lorelai yet—she wants to talk it through first.Unfortunately, Lorelai finds out about the kiss from Lane's mom. So she tries to play it cool and wait for Rory to tell her herself… but she can't hold it in. When Rory gets home, Lorelai casually brings it up, pretends everything is fine, and immediately drags Rory back to the store to see Dean.Even worse—Lorelai invites Dean over for movie night. Rory is MORTIFIED, but there's no escaping it now. When Dean arrives, they start the movie, and Lorelai awkwardly sits in the kitchen. Rory panics and begs her mom to come back into the room. While Rory is in the bathroom, Lorelai low-key threatens Dean about hurting her daughter. On his way out, Rory and Dean kiss again. Our Rory is officially growing up. The cross of Christ is the most important event in all of human history. It is a stumbling block to the proud, and salvation to the humble of heart. There are many malevolent forces that seek to obfuscate the message of the cross. 1 Corinthians 1:18 tells us that "The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God." You can't be middle of the road with the Cross of Christ. God wants you to live. Where do you stand with the message of the Cross?

Why? Because tomorrow is Rory's first day at Chilton! Nothing can ruin this.Except… sleeping in.Rory wakes Lorelai up at 7:10, and they are up against it. The only clean thing Lorelai has to wear is her Dukes of Hazzard look—and she has to go inside and meet the headmaster. Naturally, it takes about two minutes for a dad to hit on her. When they finally make it to Headmaster Charleston's office, Emily is already there waiting. She insists Lorelai take off her jacket, and Lorelai immediately regrets it.Lorelai heads back to Stars Hollow, where everyone is shocked by what she wore to Rory's first day of school.Meanwhile, Rory's first day is off to a rocky start. The classes are hard, she's greeted very coldly by a girl named Paris, and she's aggressively hit on by a dude named Tristan.Back at the Inn, Lorelai is stunned to see the Chilton dad again—he's shown up to ask her out. She shuts it down immediately; dating a Chilton dad would be way too complicated. While trying to open her locker, Rory accidentally bumps into Paris, who's carrying a project for their next class. The teacher tells Rory she has to help Paris, but Paris flat-out refuses. Starting to think maybe Paris doesn't like Rory.Lorelai gets a call from her neighbor Babette saying someone is at her house installing internet. Lorelai did not order internet. Turns out Emily did. Lorelai tracks her down and tells her that paying for Rory's school does not give her the right to meddle. After school, Lorelai and Rory walk through Stars Hollow, and Lorelai asks Rory if she thinks Luke is cute. Rory says Lorelai can't date Luke because his food is too good—and a breakup would ruin everything. It's time for another Friday night dinner. Emily and Richard tell Rory she should join Richard at the club to golf. Lorelai is not thrilled that they blindsided Rory, because of course Rory wouldn't say no to her grandfather. Things start off awkward, but they end up having a really great time. Rory learns more about Richard, and Richard learns more about his granddaughter.Later, Lorelai is shocked to find out Rory actually had fun. To make matters worse, Richard calls Rory the next day. When Lorelai floats the idea of skipping Friday night dinner, Rory says she doesn't want to. Lorelai is clearly bothered by Rory growing closer to her grandparents and picks a fight over Rory borrowing her sweater without asking. They make up, and Lorelai explains that just because she doesn't have a good relationship with Richard and Emily doesn't mean Rory can't.When they arrive at Friday night dinner, Richard and Emily are thrilled to see Rory—once again making Lorelai feel left out. It's finally happening. We are watching Gilmore Girls! Join us in this journey on social media - @gilmorethemerrierpod.ABOUT: GILMORE GIRLS (SEASON 1 EPISODE 1)Rory is accepted into the elite Chilton prep school. Bad news for Lorelai: she must make amends with her parents to borrow the money for Rory's tuition. The money is available--with strings attached.AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR: GILMORE GIRLS (SEASON 1 EPISODE 1)October 5, 2000 | The WBCAST & CREW OF: GILMORE GIRLS (SEASON 1 EPISODE 1)Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore Alexis Bledel as Rory GilmoreBRAN'S GILMORE GIRLS (SEASON 1 EPISODE 1) SYNOPSISWelcome to Stars Hollow, founded in 1779 and thriving! We meet Lorelai as she walks into Luke's Diner and asks for coffee. He tells her she has a problem because she's a coffee junkie—but there's nothing he can do about it. Why? Because he loves her. I mean… maybe not. It's the pilot. We also meet her 15-year-old daughter, Rory. While getting coffee, a random dude hits on both of them separately. Classic Gilmore Girls—so close in age they could be sisters.Lorelai heads to work at the Independence Inn, where we meet her coworkers: Michel, a rude French man who runs the front desk, and Sookie St. James, the wildly talented and chaotic chef—and Lorelai's best friend. Sookie dreams of one day owning an inn with Lorelai.Meanwhile, Rory is hanging out with her best friend, Lane Kim. They're discussing an upcoming hayride that Lane's mom is forcing her to attend in hopes of setting her up with the son of one of her friends. Then Lorelai gets BIG news: Rory has been accepted to the ultra-exclusive prep school, Chilton. This is huge, because it makes Rory's dream of going to Harvard that much more possible. Lorelai tells Rory, and she is pumped. But the joy doesn't last long. Lorelai finds out how much Chilton costs—and it's a lot. They need the money immediately, or Rory can't start on Monday. There's only one option, and it's the worst one: asking her wealthy parents for help. Lorelai shows up at their house, and it's immediately clear the relationship is rocky. They agree to pay—but on one condition: weekly dinners with Lorelai and Rory. Lorelai reluctantly agrees. At school, Rory is packing up her things when she bumps into Dean, the new kid from Chicago. They talk, and Rory quickly starts to like him, despite the extremely concerning fact that he admits he watches her every day because she's “nice to look at.” Sir.After a sweet afternoon with Dean, Rory tells Lorelai she's not sure she wants to go to Chilton anymore. Lorelai is confused and upset, but it suddenly clicks—it's because of a boy. Lorelai tells Rory she will not allow her to throw her life away for some random guy. Rory is going to Chilton whether she likes it or not. It's not a great night… nothing a little Macy Gray can't help. It's finally time for the first Friday night dinner, and it's a disaster. Lorelai's father, Richard, brings up Rory's dad, Christopher, and all the success he's having with his internet startup in California. Lorelai spirals. She and her mom, Emily, end up fighting in the kitchen, and Rory overhears everything—including the fact that her grandparents are paying for Chilton.By the end of the night, Rory recognizes her mom's bravery and agrees to go to Chilton. We don't talk about the Spirit enough, and yet he is the most vital to our daily spiritual lives, for it is the Spirit who empowers these gifts in everyone for the common good, Paul says. “Gifted hands. Gifted eyes. Gifted ears.” No hand our eyes or ears do anything. It is the brain that makes it happen. If I go brain dead, my hands fall limp. If my brain goes, so goes the sermon from my mouth. I can look through binoculars but the binoculars do not see. They are the instrument through which I see. That the brain works through the organs. And that if the brain is not there, or if it stops functioning, then all the organs stop functioning too. In the same way, Christ is the Head of the Church. His Spirit works through our gifts, which is why its important to know your giftedness and act on it. The Spirit helps us have meaning and gifts to use.

A couple weeks back our dear friend and listener of the padcost, Ollie Chilton of Elixir Distillers, told Joshua that he missed hearing good whisky news on our "Extra! Extra!!" episodes. Joshua gave him a challenge: "If you can bring us good whisky news, Ollie, we'll cover it on the padcost!" Well, Ollie brought some good news and so we decided it was best to have Ollie on the pad to discuss his good news with us. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song - Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo - RØDE for making *really* great microphones - Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers - Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices - Joshua Hatton for producing and editing
Obedience is hard because it is the absence of control. All obedience is driven by faith. You're trusting someone or something that is bigger than yourself. Every day in this next year is going to be impacted by people and events that you can't always control. This is life. Most of the best things in my life I didn't orchestrate, and the bad things I didn't anticipate. So many today are frustrated because they can't make life work the way they want it to work. Some things are uncontrollable so we overcompensate: Some men are workaholics because it's about control: if I can just gather enough stuff the future can't touch me. Some men or women have a bad temper, the fear that he might explode lets him get his way. Some teenagers unfortunately bully others because it makes them feel in control of a life that often feels out of control. Time and chance happen to everyone. A wise person realizes that life is uncontrollable at times. We have the choice to be obedient to a higher way or attempt to sit on the throne of our lives and pretend to be God. We are creatures, not the creator. We're all recovering control freaks in some ways, which is why obedience can be a challenge, and control freaks live with a constant irritation: people. “If only all these people would just get out of my way. You people are constantly doing what we don't want you to do.” Already during this holiday season, over the span of 24 hours I saw more illegal and dangerous driving maneuvers than I witnessed in all of this past year. It's one thing to be obedient to God in a casual way, in a manner that fits your timing or your schedule. It's quite another to be obedient to God when life is hard, to be obedient in the moment of tension or despair or when it isn't easy. To be obedient in the moments you cannot control. It's the difference, between a “yes” and an “obedient yes” or to put it another way, an “inconvenient yes”. When you talk about an obedient yes, you have to include Mary in the conversation. Mary was placed in a situation where she was not in control and had to be obedient. Mary is given earth-shattering news: an angel visits her! And speaks! And tells her she is going to be pregnant with God's son! She hears all of this and doesn't lose her mind, but responds with beautiful obedience. Would this be inconvenient for her? Yes. Would people gossip and assume the worst of her pregnancy? Undoubtedly. People in the Bible are just like you and me and they often get it wrong. It's nice to hear a story when a regular person gets it right and gives an obedient yes.
The Bible says that parents should "Train them up in the way they should go." Notice it doesn't say that “in the way they WILL go”. This is perhaps the hardest part of parenting: your children are their own people. Parenting is perhaps the most challenging and yet potentially the most rewarding role you will ever take in your life. Families are like a garden. Great families create a culture of growth. The parents' role is to teach them in love and leave the results up to God. Along with faith, there are five things kids must learn in your family as a child that affects us as adults, per Rick Warren. What to do with your feelings “keep it to yourself” stop crying. Why? Nothing to be ashamed of. How to handle conflict: most become mute, martyr or a maniac. Or a skunk or a turtle. How parents handle conflict teaches kids the same. How to handle loss - nobody wins all the time, a loss is not the end of your life. Losses can teach us many lessons. 1980s - 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Now - ribbons for all. Cat died: my dad buried, had a funeral. They didn't say “move on, we'll get another one”. It taught me its ok to be sad and how to process it. Prov 24;16 - even if good people fall, they get back up again. Resilience is the most important aspect of life in order to be successful, to keep on getting back up. Successful people don't quit. Learn what values matter most - the world teaches that everything is about sex. Its not. Getting praise makes you happy. Not true. Values are being communicated: sex, status and power. Good habits: habits determine your character. We grow through example. Jesus - since I have washed your feet, I have given you an example to follow. Kids don't want to hear a sermon, they want to see it. We grow through conversation. Most of our conversations center around practice or homework. Deut 6:7 - you must teach God's words to your children. Talk about the Bible. Prayer habits.
Most single Christians have the good desire for someone special. What happens many times is that well-intentioned Christians will follow that desire without thinking or praying it through. There's more to you than just chemical reaction. If you follow that good intentioned craving without thinking and praying it though, you may end up in a bad relationship that is built on desire but no discernment. Don't follow desire or desperation, but use prayerful discernment. Half of marriages will end in divorce. The number one question to answer in life is, what do you do and believe about the person of Jesus Christ? The second most important question in life is, who will you marry, if at all? Don't merely follow the desire, everyone has the desire. Follow the God who created you with that desire. Matthew 633 seek first Kingdom of God and it's righteousness, and all things will be added onto you, seek righteousness first, seek holiness first seek the joy of the Lord first, seek the giver, not the gift. When it comes to dating and or singleness,If you do what most people do, you'll get what most people get. If you want something different, you'll have to do what most people don't do. And what most people don't do is give that desire over to God and wait on him to develop his character in you, to trust the giver and not seek the gift first.
As the holidays approach, it is important to discuss the most fundamental of human relationships: marriage, singleness (next week) and parenting. In Ephesians 5, we see a beautiful definition of Christian marriage: mutual submission, covenantal love, service, sacrifice. All of these qualities mimic the love Christ has for His Church. Christ lived and died for the Church in order to make her holy. When we love our spouses in the same way, we further their holiness, too.

Did you know that the solution to hunger is solidarity, not charity? Join Food Sleuth Radio host and Registered Dietitian, Melinda Hemmelgarn for her conversation with Mariana Chilton, PhD, MPH, Professor, U. of Mass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, and author of The Painful Truth About Hunger in America: Why We Must Unlearn Everything We Think We Know and Start Again. (MIT, 2024). Chilton discusses the trauma of hunger, the structural issues that undergird hunger, the devastating impact of hunger on children, and who really benefits from keeping people in a state of precarity. She explains how the solutions to hunger lie far beyond food, and are based in compassion, empathy, solidarity and loving kindness.Related Websites: www.drmarianachilton.com
Consecration is an act of the will. Consecration is led by the Holy Spirit, for we are temples of the Holy Spirit. Consecration is an ongoing act of worship in the life of the believer. Human beings grow by degrees, either toward holiness or not.
In Joshua 24, the Israelites stood at a crossroads. They had taken the promised land of Canaan. With this new reality, would they maintain their covenant with God or give in to the larger cultures surrounding them? Joshua gives a clarion call to the people: choose you this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Life can either be hard or hard. It is always best to choose to go with the Lord. Over the next several weeks, culminating on Nov. 2nd, we will continue to explore ways the covenant is expressed here at Wesley Memorial. How does our personal growth, our serving, and our giving express the covenant to others, in a winsome and gracious way that says “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord?” Its not about crossing a budget, but about raising the bar for our own individual spiritual journeys, showing that our small unseen choices make a bigger, cumulative impact.

What if the most impactful financial advice isn't about picking the right investment—but about understanding human behaviour, simplifying your life, and laughing along the way? In this episode of the Rational Reminder podcast, we're joined by none other than David Chilton, author of the legendary personal finance book The Wealthy Barber. David shares insights from decades of experience helping Canadians improve their financial well-being through simplicity, frugality, and clarity.
