Wolfgang Van Halen returns to Talkin' Rock. We discuss is latest song and video, The End. It's horror-themed, so we had to talk about horror movies a little bit. He told me why he isn't going to the final Black Sabbath show, how he works on his music in the studio, and more. To close out the episode, it's John Jackson from the Bon Scott estate. It was interesting talking to John about how he got his job, working with the legendary AC/DC, seeing some recent shows, and a special concert coming up to celebrate Bon's 79th birthday. Yes, there will be some very cool guests who will be in attendance to honor the late singer. Thanks for listening!
Tonight on Exclusively Van Halen, we're back with Part 2 of our special 3-part series featuring two very special guests: Michael “Myko” Gutierrez and Robert Stoltz. They're here to dive deep into the story of one of the rarest Van Halen guitars ever — a nearly unknown Kramer Baretta that was built and custom-painted in 1984 at 5150 by Eddie Van Halen himself and his then-guitar tech Rudy Leiren. This wasn't just any Kramer — it was Ed's personal studio-use-only guitar, played exclusively at 5150 and never meant for public hands. Incredibly, this guitar found its way into the wild when Michael won it in a once-in-a-lifetime contest sponsored by Kramer Guitars and Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. Even more amazing: Eddie personally handed Michael the guitar at the 1985 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. Robert, who has contributed to multiple Van Halen-related publications, first wrote about this guitar back in 1997 for The Inside magazine. He's recently completed a detailed follow-up article, packed with new insights into the guitar's history, which will be published online soon. Don't miss this deep cut into Van Halen lore — only on Exclusively Van Halen.
Greg Koch welcomes YouTube guitar sensation and touring musician Ben Eller (Uncle Ben) to the Gristle fire for a conversation that meanders from lighthearted Waffle House tales to profound insights about musical authenticity.Ben shares how his guitar journey and popular YouTube channel were born from simple boredom - first as a homeschooled kid with time to kill, later as a guitar teacher with creative energy to burn. His candid "This is Why You Suck at Guitar" series emerged from the thoughts he couldn't express to frustrating students who never practiced. That unfiltered honesty resonated with viewers, launching an Internet teaching career that complements his diverse performing life. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when they explore how our earliest musical influences create the foundation for our tastes. From Ben's childhood memories of Van Halen's "Eruption" to Greg's transformative experience with Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland," they agree that understanding "where your clock starts" is essential to respecting diverse musical perspectives.Perhaps most compelling is their mutual admiration for guitarists who communicate mastery without technical flash. "The hardest thing in the world," Ben notes, "is proving you're a supreme sorcerer without even breaching 16th notes" - a pointed commentary on today's "Instagram shred post era" where technical fireworks often overshadow musical substance.Ben offers golden wisdom for creators navigating online criticism: "Don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from." His ability to maintain positivity while acknowledging the gifts and challenges of internet fame reveals why his teaching connects so deeply. The episode concludes with Ben sharing exciting upcoming projects, including a riff-focused solo album, potential metal ventures inspired by his recent stint with Mastodon, and comprehensive instructional courses revealing his "hidden Guitar Illuminati wisdom." Ready to chew some genuine musical gristle with two authentic guitar voices? This conversation delivers wisdom, laughs, and inspiration in equal measure.
What happens when one guitar god pays tribute to another… and it backfires? In this episode, we dive deep into the surprising fallout between Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton — two of rock's most legendary players. It all started with a jam session in 1983, featured on Brian May's Star Fleet Project, where Eddie and Brian recorded a slow blues track called “Blues Breaker” — dedicated to Clapton himself. But Clapton hated it. He called it “horrible.” He said Eddie and Brian “can't play” the blues. And he delivered a scathing verdict: “If he was that tuned into me and missed that point… then he missed the whole point.” This video explores the tension between technical brilliance and emotional expression, the strict “rules” of blues as Clapton saw them, and how a friendship built on admiration ended with hurt feelings, harsh words, and never speaking again. We also revisit Dave Davies of The Kinks and his own complicated feelings about being imitated — including a jab at Eddie Van Halen's version of “You Really Got Me.” From tribute to tension, from respect to rivalry — this is the untold story behind one of rock's coldest guitar feuds.

Red Voodoo is a Sacramento-based rock band formed in 2018, known for their high-energy performances and a modern take on classic rock. They are influenced by 70s and 80s rock, incorporating polished harmonies and catchy hooks. The band consists of Dino McCord (lead vocals), Davin Loiler (lead guitar), Andrew Edwards (bass), and Andy Nathan (drums). Red Voodoo has gained recognition for their stage presence and has opened for established rock acts like Sammy Hagar, Y&T, Everclear, and Slaughter. They released their debut single, "Rise Up," produced by Tesla's Frank Hannon, which gained popularity on underground radio. Their music often features a blend of classic rock sounds with a contemporary edge, appealing to fans of bands like Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, and Boston. The band is also known for their energetic live shows and aims to make rock music mainstream again. The band's name, "Red Voodoo," was inspired by Sammy Hagar's album of the same name, but the band also uses it to represent the "magic of creating fun rock and roll music" and the energy they put into their live performances. They have also released an EP titled "Red Voodoo" which showcases their musicianship and songwritingBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

We welcome back friend of the pod and TM&TM Alumnus (alumni? aluminati?) Mr Henry Jeffreys in the first of our episodes focused on PDO. What is a PDO? Are you a PDO? Are we a PDO? (PDOI? AlumiPDO?). Importantly, what is a PDO supposed to be and who does it represent. We consider it from multiple angles; does it benefit producers? Consumers? Do consumers know or even care? When it comes to English wine and positioning it both domestically and in the export markets what is the relevance of further legislation and does it help or hinder sales? How does it fit with both a singular and wider brand? From handpicking to discussing what's in a name we attempt to start unlocking the conversation that is becoming ever more frequent in the lands of English wine. Several bombs are dropped, by both our magnificent guest and Ferg himself...you'll be delighted to know that Lee wasn't around for this one. It was actually the only thing on Henry's rider; his equivalent of Van Halen and their dislike of brown M&Ms. With huge thanks to Henry for his time and sharing his deep insights on the subject. BulletBoys exploded onto the scene in 1988 with their self-titled debut, produced by Ted Templeman (famed for his work with Van Halen and David Lee Roth). The album went gold, fueled by hits like “Smooth Up in Ya” and a blistering cover of The O'Jays' “For the Love of Money.” With comparisons to Van Halen swirling, it was no surprise when Marq eventually struck up a friendship with Eddie Van Halen himself — stories of which he shares with candor and admiration.Torien opens up not just about Eddie, but also his encounters with others like Dave Grohl, members of KISS, and many more. With nearly four decades in the music business, he remains fiercely independent, constantly evolving the band and touring .Beyond nostalgia, BulletBoys continue to bring new material and fresh energy to the stage — with Marq Torien's signature vocal firepower leading the charge.

Michael Anthony Opens Up About His One Big Regret: Van Halen Deserved a Thunderous Farewell, Not a Whimper For Michael Anthony, former Van Halen bassist, the ride with one of rock's most electrifying bands was nothing short of a dream — until the ending, which still haunts him. In a recent episode of Get on the Bus, Anthony revealed his biggest career regret: how Van Halen's legendary run came to an unceremonious close. “It should have gone out with a fricking bang that shook the world,” he said, “and it was more like a whimper, the way everything ended.” Though he described the band's heyday as “living the dream” and even “a fairy tale,” the behind-the-scenes reality was far from perfect. As years went by, tensions and personal rifts—particularly with guitarist Eddie Van Halen—created a lasting fracture. “Unfortunately, Eddie and I never made amends,” Anthony shared. “We had some issues, and I'm sure that if he had not passed when he did, we would've reconciled… we would've calmed all that stuff down.” In a bittersweet twist, Anthony revealed that there had been talks of a massive reunion tour featuring the original members — a true full-circle moment in the making. “I talked to Wolfgang [Van Halen], and he said there were plans to bring everyone back together,” Anthony recalled. “At that point in Ed's life, he was more like, ‘Hey, the past is the past... water under the bridge.'” But time ran out. Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020, and with him went the final chance for the ultimate Van Halen reunion. Now, years later, Anthony holds onto the music, the memories — and the what ifs. “That's the only regret I have,” he said. “We were supposed to go out with thunder. Not silence.” Michael Anthony - The TRUE Van Halen Story You've NEVER Heard! https://youtu.be/oKzjBY-OarA?si=TXZlTWyqxHjeu_tB EVH Van Halen guitar keychains - https://www.vanhalenstore.com/page/VH/Little-Guitars/KEYSET-456

"I believe music can save souls."Angie Vertti arrived to Cabo in 2015, she quit a 9 to 5 job and decided to pick up her music career. She likes to say that “music found me”.It didn't take long after her arrival to be called up to the Cabo Wabo and other popular hot spots and trendy bars. Her band pushed me to challenging rock songs, such as; Metallica, Iron Maiden, Journey, Van Halen, Toto, Queen, you name it! The biggest voices in Rock history. She was called up on stage by Sammy Hagar, the “Red Rocker” sharing the stage with him on about 3 occasions. And of course thanks to him taking her under his wing her career had a major boost. In 2019 she did a 6 month contract on Celebrity Cruises. That gave her the opportunity to travel the world. In 2023 she attended the NAMM in LA. My guest today had an incredible run with Club Med, working on and off from 1982 to 2009. He kicked off his first season as a Bar G.O. at Club Med Paradise Island—and beyond bartending, he also lent his talents to waterskiing, circus, and picnics. I had the pleasure of meeting him during my very first season, and he's here today to clear up a funny bit of confusion I had about him back then! A Florida State University alum with a business background, he even had the chance to hang out with David Lee Roth back in the day. Please welcome the one and only, Tony Love! Tony shares how he first discovered Club Med through a model friend who regularly did photo shoots at the resorts—and from there, takes us on a journey through his many unforgettable seasons. Tony recounts what it was like rubbing elbows with David Lee Roth of Van Halen at Club Med Paradise Island in 1982, as well as the fierce Olympic Day rivalries with a future Chief of Village at St. Lucia in 1992. Tony also reveals the origin story of the iconic “Super G.O.” t-shirt that he created and talks about the unofficial "Youth Hostel" he ran out of his place in Miami, offering a crash pad for any G.O. passing through town. Tony is a master storyteller, so you're in for a real treat. Enjoy the ride! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora, and Listen Notes. "It was pure rock ‘n' roll heaven." That's how guitar legend Pat Travers describes the most unforgettable gig of his life—a scorching summer day in 1978 at Oakland Coliseum, sharing the bill with Aerosmith, AC/DC, Van Halen, Foreigner, and his own Pat Travers Band. Five powerhouse bands. One stage. Over 65,000 screaming fans. “It was the best show I ever played,” Travers told Rick Beato. “It started at 11 in the morning and didn't let up. Just hit after hit, band after band.” Van Halen. AC/DC. Nobody remembers who went on first—and it didn't matter. What mattered was the energy, the music, and the wild backstage scene, where legends mingled like it was just another day in the park.

Send Steve a Text MessageWhat really holds most guitar players back? After teaching thousands of guitarists, I've discovered it's rarely about technical ability—it's about confidence. That feeling of certainty when you play, knowing who you are as a musician, and being comfortable in your own skin. The journey to guitar confidence follows five distinct phases, each building upon the last. It begins with curiosity—that moment when you hear Hendrix, Van Halen, or whoever your inspiration might be, and think "I want to do that!" This natural motivation fuels your early development. Next comes foundation building, where you develop the essential skills needed for your musical goals. This is where many players get distracted by "bright shiny objects" instead of focusing on the fundamentals that will truly advance their playing. The third phase—developing actual confidence—is where most guitarists get stuck. It requires something scary: being vulnerable enough to play for others and receive feedback. "I'll play with people once I'm better" becomes a perpetual excuse, creating a cycle where improvement stalls because you're not getting the feedback needed to grow. Breaking through this barrier transforms your playing.Once confidence develops, you enter the creative expression phase, where your playing begins to sound more human and personal. This naturally evolves into the final phase—musical identity. The liberating truth is that even guitar legends have limitations. Tommy Emanuel doesn't play like Eddie Van Halen, and Joe Bonamassa doesn't sound like Steve Vai. These players succeeded not by mastering everything, but by embracing who they are musically. The guitar truly is Pandora's box—endless possibilities that will outlive us all. Don't let that overwhelm you. Finding your center and developing confidence in your unique voice is the real path to becoming the guitarist you want to be. Where are you in these five phases, and what's your next step toward confident playing? In 1985, David Lee Roth was out and Sammy Hagar was in. One of the biggest lead singer shakeups in music history led to some of the biggest sales of Van Halen's career. It also led to more drama, to Lamborghinis and Ferraris racing through the streets of Los Angeles, to military assault vehicles storming Beverly Hills, to crazed fans and loaded guns – and at the middle of it all, a modern-day warrior, a man with a code, trying to orchestrate his own survival. On the backs of one of rock ‘n roll's greatest innovators and one of its greatest ringmasters, Van Halen made some of the greatest music of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen chased the perfect sound while lead singer David Lee Roth chased the next party. They were also ruthless when it came to protecting the unique thing they had created. Nothing was allowed to stand in their way. Not bullies, bootleggers, cynical guitar manufacturers, record producers – even the members of Van Halen themselves.
