Trace gives a shout out to artist Arthur Freeman for his steel guitar contributions. The two talk about the arrangement of the song, sharing the spotlight between vocals, guitar, and other instruments. John discusses the guitar setup he used to get his classic country tone. Trace talks about the success of “This One's For Alan,” and plans to release more music going forward due to the large amount of support he and the band have received around town. Trace goes on to play an unreleased original song called “Don't Write Me Off.” He sings alongside his parents, bluegrass legends Nick and Michelle Nixon. Returning to the show, Trace and John talk about the formation of Gone Country, bringing on bassist Chip Hale, drummer Corey Marshall, fiddler Diane Hossinger, and pianist Adam Kohout. Trace discusses the process for creating setlists, crafting them around the instruments being played and trends of nostalgia in the country music scene. The two discuss their relationships with country music, both growing up in families that enjoyed and were involved in the scene. Throughout their lives, Trace and John have been musically inclined, playing a variety of instruments. They go on to discuss the country music scene in Richmond, with their unique perspective as a group that plays originals and covers.

There was something about Mary, but despite her claims, it wasn't an inheritance, prestigious titles, peerage, or any aristocratic honors. Mary Carelton became famous-for-being-famous when the paparazzi and media of her day caught wind of a scandal involving her. It wasn't about her penchant for pretending to be a princess -- as it turns out, it was for bigamy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A twisty-turny episode today... Well, it's not really. It's much more straightforward. No intro, straight into a peach of an episode with Oklahoma State University's Associate Professor of Management, John Holden. Jon and John discuss REITs, how they may in fact be a highly flawed and dangerous path for a business to tread in the long term; John also talks about the fairly recent-ish NYT story about dubious marketing practises of gambling companies onto US university campuses, and we also discuss something Jon may have in fact completely dreamt up. Still no Fintan, but his amateur love of Adult Leisure magazines is also discussed. 54 minutes of pure gold. Enjoy the episode, and see you in 2023!

If you've tuned into the NBA playoffs, it seems like every second ad is for sports betting websites. That's because Canada recently made single-game betting legal, and in Ontario private companies like Bet365, BetMGM and FanDuel are allowed to operate in this multi-billion dollar industry. This booming business has seen companies partner with broadcasters, other media companies and celebrities to promote their platforms. But experts are worried that no one is looking after the betters. Today on Front Burner we talk to John Holden, an assistant professor at Oklahoma State University, and an expert on the sports betting industry.
It’s March Madness, and while millions of fans will enjoy watching the games, a decent chunk of them will also be betting on the games. Dozens of states have legalized online sports betting in recent years, with apps like FanDuel and DraftKings fighting for the eyes and dollars of new gamblers. Marketplace’s Kimberly Adams speaks with John Holden, an assistant professor in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University, about the growth of this industry. Keep independent journalism going strong. Give today to support Marketplace Tech.
