We're excited to welcome Trace Nixon and the band Gone Country to the next episode of Small Venue Music! Trace is a Richmond artist who recently released his first single “This One's For Alan.” The song gives a nod to legends of country music, with resonating lyrics and a style that will get you on your feet. Trace and Gone Country have played around Richmond for a couple of years now, and contributed greatly to the area's country music presence. Trace and Gone Country guitarist John Holden sit down to talk about their inspirations, backgrounds, the country music scene in Richmond and beyond. Performances and interviews were filmed at Crazy Rooster Brewing Company in Powhatan, VA.    Trace and the band start by playing “This One's For Alan” live. Trace and John then sit down with host Don Busick. The two outline the process behind writing the song and leveraging the skills of musicians in the band to make it great. Trace gives a shout out to artist Arthur Freeman for his steel guitar contributions. The two talk about the arrangement of the song, sharing the spotlight between vocals, guitar, and other instruments. John discusses the guitar setup he used to get his classic country tone. Trace talks about the success of “This One's For Alan,” and plans to release more music going forward due to the large amount of support he and the band have received around town.   Trace goes on to play an unreleased original song called “Don't Write Me Off.” He sings alongside his parents, bluegrass legends Nick and Michelle Nixon.     Returning to the show, Trace and John talk about the formation of Gone Country, bringing on bassist Chip Hale, drummer Corey Marshall, fiddler Diane Hossinger, and pianist Adam Kohout. Trace discusses the process for creating setlists, crafting them around the instruments being played and trends of nostalgia in the country music scene. The two discuss their relationships with country music, both growing up in families that enjoyed and were involved in the scene. Throughout their lives, Trace and John have been musically inclined, playing a variety of instruments. They go on to discuss the country music scene in Richmond, with their unique perspective as a group that plays originals and covers. Trace and John share their aspirations to play larger shows and expand their reach. Trace Nixon, John Holden, and their band Gone Country make and play incredible music and the Richmond scene is lucky to have them. If you've tuned into the NBA playoffs, it seems like every second ad is for sports betting websites. That's because Canada recently made single-game betting legal, and in Ontario private companies like Bet365, BetMGM and FanDuel are allowed to operate in this multi-billion dollar industry. This booming business has seen companies partner with broadcasters, other media companies and celebrities to promote their platforms. But experts are worried that no one is looking after the betters. Today on Front Burner we talk to John Holden, an assistant professor at Oklahoma State University, and an expert on the sports betting industry.

Libby is an incredibly inspiring woman. She is a Wife, Mum, Landscape gardener and she writes some amazing songs and music with her Husband, John. In this episode, Libby talks about the symptoms that led to a diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer and the subsequent confusion that often follows regarding pathology. She goes on to tell me about the major surgery she endured and the post-operative complications. Libby has had several courses of chemotherapy and describes how she coped as she lived through that period of time and where she is at now with her disease. Content warning: we talk about how Libby feels about dying. Libby shares some exciting news regarding a song that she wrote about what it's like to live with recurrent cancer that could equally be applied to living with any constantly life-changing health condition. The song will be released in time for ‘Ovarian Cancer awareness month' in March 2021 to raise funds for Professor Charlie Gourley who researches Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer. In "Curse of the Demon" a.k.a. "Night of the Demon" 1957 we explore the dark and satanic dominion of Dr. Julian Karswell played by Niall MacGinnis as he sets about making believers of those who doubt his powers. The Director Jacques Tourneur displays his exceptional experience as he creates this entertaining film using suspense, music, cinematography, special effects and talented actors. The movie reminds us of Mr. Tourneur's "Cat People" from 1942.Dana Andrews plays Dr. John Holden the Psychologist who investigates Dr. Karswell, Peggy Cummins is Joanna Harrington the niece of a victim of Dr. Karswell's curse, Professor Mark O'Brien played by Liam Redmond is a colleague of Dr. Holden, Brian Wilde is Rand Hobart a farmer who suffers from the influence of Dr. Karswell and additional cast members add to the story. Apparently the makers of the film disagreed about how the Demon should be shown. The delay in dealing with the case of Ibrahim Halawa has left Irish observers with a negative view of Egypt's human rights record. It is a view apparently shared by the U.S. State Department, which last week cut $300 million in military and economic aid to the country and its president Abdel el-Sisi, a leader once praised by Donald Trump, for failing to make progress on human rights . But there is more to the move than meets the eye. We talk to New York Times Cairo bureau chief Declan Walsh. Later in the podcast we talk to Texas resident John Holden about the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and what is expected when President Trump visits the stricken region later today.

How has China changed in the past four decades? A conversation with John Holden

John Holden has one word of advice for people trying to understand China: humility. "Anybody who tries to come to grips with China, a country with a very rich civilization, a long history... You just have to be humble in recognizing that there are things you will get wrong, things you will miss," he says around the 36-minute mark of this week's episode. John is one to know. After completing his master's degree in Chinese language and literature at Stanford University in 1980, he worked on a project to translate the Encyclopedia Britannica into Chinese. In 1981, he served as an interpreter for National Geographic during an expedition along the Yellow River. From 1986 to 1998, he was chairman of the China branch of Cargill, a large multinational company, and from there he went on to provide high-level consulting and business leadership to a number of firms working in the nation. He also served as president of the National Committee on United States–China Relations from 1998 to 2005, was chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, and currently holds a position with the Asia program of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. In addition, he is associate dean with the Yenching Academy of Peking University, which offers a master's degree in China studies. Being humble isn't the only advice John has for people trying to understand China. Business leaders looking for insight should listen around the 27-minute mark. There John explains the value of taking the time to "double down" on researching the local market and mastering customer communication on Chinese social media. And if you want a peek at the personalities of some of China's top political leaders of the past, check out the 18-minute mark or so, where John discusses meeting with the "very, very smart" Wu Yi and Zhu Rongji. Amid all of the changes John has witnessed in China over the past several decades — he notes its business environment has become increasingly competitive and challenging for foreign firms, and access to political leaders has become more difficult — he has also observed at least one steadfast feature: "That drive to be more open and to learn and to study — that is the most salient feature of my experience with China over the past 35 years, and it's still very much there today," he says near the 12-minute point of the podcast. At the present, John sees China at a crossroads of rapid economic and political change that is fueling a stream of news reports about the nation becoming more closed to foreign culture and investment. He is hopeful it is just a phase of the development of an increasingly complex country. "China has been a story in my lifetime of two steps forward, one step back," he says around the 26-minute mark. "We may be one step back at the moment." Recommendations: John: Review of the American Chamber of Commerce's involvement in China: "AmCham China Legacy: A Better Business Environment," by Graham Norris, and The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China, 1776 to the Present, by John Pomfret. Jeremy: Article from the South China Morning Post about Cuban-Chinese: "Lost in Cuba: China’s ‘forgotten diaspora'" Kaiser: Everything Under the Heavens: How the Past Helps Shape China's Push for Global Power, by Howard French.
