On 28 May 2018, Laura Mortimer and her 11-year-old daughter, Ella Dalby were found in a pool of blood at their house in Gloucester. Laura had 18 separate stab wounds, whilst Ella had 24. Laura clearly fought for her life and Ella witnessed some of the attack and bravely came to the help of her mother. Christopher Boon, a man with a history of violence, was arrested for their murders. In this exclusives episode Laura is joined by Jodie Edith, Laura's sister and Ella's aunt, to speak out for the first time about events leading up to the horrific double murders. Together they identify the red flags, early warning signs and how women can be helped by family and friends who know what to look for. Laura also begins unravelling the murder of 21-year-old Libby Squires, Lisa's daughter, who disappeared following a night out with friends on 31 January 2019 in Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In April 1988, the quiet lakeside community of Lakeway, Texas was shaken when 45-year-old Betty Ann Thomas vanished from her home on Cold Water Lane. A violent scene inside the residence suggested a targeted attack, and two days later, Betty was found in the trunk of her Jaguar outside an Austin hotel, bound, gagged, and executed. Her murder became the first, and still the only, homicide in Lakeway's history.As detectives uncovered Betty's life story and examined her home for clues, an eerie parallel emerged: her father-in-law had been murdered in a similarly cold-blooded fashion eight years earlier. Though investigators explored every possibility, including motives involving money and past associations, the case ultimately went cold.Decades later, advancements in forensics, including an unidentified male DNA profile and recent fingerprint matches, have reignited the investigation. This week we're channeling our inner shinobi to explore how Bandai Namco took Masashi Kishimoto's legendary manga about a determined orange-suited underdog and transformed it into a frantic button-mashing tournament fighter that somehow convinced an entire generation of fans that they could recreate iconic Naruto moments if they just hit the attack button fast enough and screamed at their TV harder than Naruto himself. Released during the golden age of anime-to-console adaptations, the Naruto Ultimate Ninja games became the de facto way fans could live out their ninja fantasies—assuming your ninja fantasy involves janky camera angles, occasionally unresponsive inputs, and the kind of special effect visual soup that makes you wonder if you're actually watching a jutsu or if your PS2 is just having a mild aneurysm. With fighters pulled straight from the Hidden Leaf Village and beyond, these games proved that sometimes the best way to honor a beloved manga is to give players the chance to make Naruto fight characters he had absolutely no reason to fight (looking at you, random filler villains). This episode, we're absolutely stoked to welcome Cory Byrd from Byrds Eye View Comics—a fellow enthusiast of all things sequential art and gaming who can probably explain why Naruto's popularity transcended manga, anime, AND video games with the kind of clarity that makes marketing departments weep with envy. This is the 2nd part of the story of Miles, a British National Service conscript during his military service in the late 1950s. I'd like to give special thanks for the Norfolk Tank Museum for highlighting Miles' story and one of his relatives for putting me in contact with him. Throughout the episode, our Miles shares captivating anecdotes and the thrill of being part of a light armoured reconnaissance regiment. He vividly recounts the challenges of operating various armoured vehicles, including the Saladin and Saracen, and the responsibilities that came with being on the front lines of military operations. One of the most intriguing aspects of his service was the border patrols, where he and his comrades would venture into the woods, often encountering their East German counterparts. In this episode of Derringer Discoveries, Paul and Alton sit down with Katie Tich and UAP (Rainer Aschemeier) -- the duo behind ROSEBUDTHORN -- to explore how their collaboration grew from remote songwriting into a full-fledged band. Katie, a returning Honorary Derringer, shares her journey as an indie singer-songwriter and discusses two of her recent solo releases: Crossfire and her newest track, Stress Dreams. On the morning of November 13, 1992, Suzanne Marie Hummel, a 39-year-old mother of two, parked in the busy lot of Rice Epicurean Market at Kirby and West Alabama in Houston, a familiar spot she used to wait before work. While eating breakfast in her car, she was approached by a woman demanding her purse. Within seconds, a .22-caliber shot tore through Suzanne's arm and chest, and the assailant fled, vanishing into morning traffic and leaving her fighting for her life.Suzanne managed to drive forward and crash into a nearby bus shelter, drawing the attention of witnesses. Before losing consciousness forever, she gave one vital clue. Houston Police were stunned. A broad-daylight murder in a high-traffic shopping hub bordering River Oaks should have come with witnesses and leads. Instead, detectives were left with a scattered purse, a single gunshot, and the possibility of a waiting getaway vehicle. Whether the killer acted alone remained uncertain.Today, Suzanne's case remains open and unsolved. Police believe someone did see something that morning.
