In July 1970, the body of 26-year-old Eula Mae “Kay” Miller was discovered inside her apartment at the Hilltop Apartments in Odessa, Texas. What initially appeared quiet and undisturbed soon revealed a brutal killing, one that had gone unnoticed for days in the sweltering West Texas heat. As investigators worked backward through a shrinking window of time, they were confronted with a case already eroded by delay, decomposition, and the transient nature of a booming oilfield city.Kay Miller was known publicly as a friendly, outgoing go-go dancer at a local club, but behind that image was a woman carrying a far more complicated life: a separated wife, a mother of four, and someone who kept her past carefully guarded. With no signs of forced entry, no murder weapon, and no clear motive, detectives were left with a maze of acquaintances, shifting witness memories, and evidence that refused to speak clearly. Despite interviewing more than 150 people and chasing countless leads, including rumors of a serial killer operating in the area, Kay's murder remained stubbornly resistant to resolution.More than fifty years later, the slaying of Eula “Kay” Miller remains unsolved. No arrests were ever made, and no definitive answers emerged. A side-scrolling action game on the Game Boy Advance where Reed Richards appears to have been replaced by his less scientifically-inclined brother in law (close enough, give me this one) and the Thing is made entirely of texture-mapping nightmares.” Congratulations, you've just invented Fantastic Four Flame On! It's a game that managed to take four of Marvel's most iconic heroes and somehow make them feel more constipated than a chemistry lecture taught underwater. Joining us this week is the absolutely phenomenal Scott Niswander from NerdSync (the man who can explain the entire Marvel mythos while simultaneously making you question why the Human Torch doesn't just solve every problem by setting it on fire) and It's (Probably) Not Aliens (where not even Sue Storm's force fields could save Ancient Aliens from the debunking). Together we'll navigate a game so baffling in its design choices that you'll start wondering if the developers were actually aliens trying to understand human entertainment and coming up just slightly short of the mark. Will our heroes discover that the Game Boy Advance's technical limitations somehow made this game better than it had any right to be? Can Scott explain why this game exists in a way that doesn't make all of our brains feel like Alicia Masters trying to sculpt in the dark? And most importantly, does “Flame On” actually let you catch things on fire in any meaningful way, or is it just an elaborate metaphor for combusting under pressure? Strap yourself in for an episode more chaotic than trying to explain Fox's Fantastic Four continuity to anyone born after 2010. When you picture lace, what comes to mind: an old-fashioned once-white piece of Victorian embellishment? The elegant, possibly itchy decoration on a wedding gown? If you are a needleworker, you might picture an array of bobbins leashed to a cluster of pins and arrayed on a pillow, or a tatting shuttle, or a steel crochet hook. All of these images would be correct—but capture the tiniest slice of the world's laces. As a PhD student, Elena Kanagy-Loux considers lace through the lenses of history, culture, and gender. How have textile artisans around the world developed lace strutures? Who was making lace—and who was wearing it? (For what matter, what is lace, anyway?) Beyond our assumptions about lace are delightful surprises: Wearing lace previously denoted power and wealth rather than femininity. Traditional lace may include a riot of color. Although they look delicate, lace fabrics can be surprisingly durable. Outside her academic pursuits, Elena takes a more hands-on view of lace. Having studied a variety of methods, she fell in love with bobbin lace, which seemed to click in her mind when she sat down at a lacemaking pillow. Like most of our readers, Elena generally creates lace for her own interest and enjoyment, though she has accepted several notable commissions: a collar presented to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Columbia Law School on the 25th anniversary of her investiture to the Supreme court, and a collar designed for the Threads of Power exhibit (https://www.bgc.bard.edu/exhibitions/exhibitions/118/threads-of-power) at the Bard Graduate Center. After the discovery of the burnt car that belonged to millionaire Houston oilman Ed Baker, speculation was abound. Though the medical examiner finally ruled that the body found inside was indeed Edward Gerald Baker's, some folks didn't buy the ruling. They insisted the oilman had faked his own death and skipped country to avoid the lawsuits against his company or worse – jail time. Harris County Sheriff's Investigators, however, didn't really buy that. Though they seemed to believe that Ed's death was the result of an elaborately planned suicide, they couldn't prove it and still had to leave their minds open to the theory that the man was killed as the result of a mob hit. To this day, exactly what happened to Ed Baker remains a mystery.
