  In this episode of Grating the Nutmeg, Natalie Belanger tells us about how two journals kept by a Revolutionary War-era girl in the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History's  collection have inspired an original work of music.    Several years ago, Leonard Raybon (Associate Professor of Music at Tulane University) encountered two journals and other writings by Hannah Hadassah Hickok, held at the Connecticut Museum. Hannah was the matriarch of the non-conformist Smith Family of Glastonbury. Her daughters would go on to became nationally famous for protesting their lack of voting rights in the 1870s by refusing to pay their taxes — an act that resulted in the town of Glastonbury confiscating their property, including their beloved cows.   Inspired by the young Hannah's unique voice, Leonard composed an original mini-musical based on her writings. You'll hear Natalie and Leonard's conversation about what moved him to compose the piece and how it fits into his larger project of producing "Ameri-musicals" that use song to get us to think about the past.   Professor Raybon, the Connecticut Museum, and the Glastonbury Historical Society are partnering to present this work to the public in a one-time performance on November 8th, 2025 at 7:00 pm at First Church of Glastonbury at 2183 Main Street, Glastonbury. First Church was the Smith family's congregation, so it's a fitting place to host this unique musical experience! It's hard to believe some of the stories of deceit and corruption by Donald Trump and Pam Bondi's DOJ officials and attorneys are real. But as Politico just reported: "DOJ backs off claims about Guatemalan children it sought to deport".The case involves parents who were located in Guatemala but who had children in the United States. In a staggering display of lying to a court, a DOJ attorney named Drew Ensign told a judge that "all of the parents and guardians" in Guatemala wanted their children deported from the US back to Guatemala.It turns out that NONE of the parents and guardians of children said any such thing.  "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The universe itself was spoken into existence. Light didn't gradually emerge—it was commanded: "Let there be light," and there was light. Matter, energy, space, time—all of it came into being through the power of divine speech. This is the blueprint of reality. Every star, every planet, every quantum particle exists because consciousness spoke it into form. The Big Bang wasn't just an explosion—it was the ultimate affirmation, the first and most powerful declaration that set everything in motion. Here's what most people miss about affirmations: You're not trying to convince some external deity to grant your wishes. You're not begging the universe for scraps. You are exercising the same creative power that brought the cosmos into existence. The same divine consciousness that spoke galaxies into being is the consciousness looking through your eyes right now. When you affirm, you're not hoping something might happen. You're declaring what IS happening from the perspective of your divine nature. Every word you speak with intention and feeling is a creative command that reality must obey, because you are not separate from the source of all creation—you ARE that source, individualized and expressing through this unique point of consciousness you call yourself. Think about this: If the infinite intelligence that created over two trillion galaxies is the same intelligence operating as your consciousness right now, what could possibly be impossible for you? What limitation could actually be real when you're connected to unlimited power? The only question is whether you're going to use this power consciously or unconsciously, deliberately or randomly.  

Some imaginary friends are sweet little companions… others might just be DEADLY.
