Nikki and Brie catch up with longtime friends Elliott Taylor and Skylar Grey in a special two part episode at the Bonita Bonita speakeasy. In today's first part, we hear from Elliott Taylor — singer, songwriter, and producer who's helped write hits for artists like Celine Dion and Eminem. This conversation goes all the way back to where his love of performing began, his unconventional path through the music industry, and how he's built a life that balances making music with business, farm life, and living on his own terms. Plus, the four reminisce about unforgettable nights together, the appeal of living away from the city noise, and why Nikki & Brie may be responsible for a few stories better left off Instagram. It's music, friendship, entrepreneurship, farm life, a little chaos, and a lot of laughs with Elliott Taylor. Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail! 1217. This week, we talk to Florence Hazrat, author of "On the Mark," about how punctuation evolved over 2,000 years. We look at why ancient Greek and Roman writing had no spaces between words, how a librarian in Alexandria introduced the first marks to help readers, and why the Renaissance brought a burst of new punctuation that then mostly stopped. Then we look at why a period can make a short text message feel aggressive, whether emoji count as punctuation, and how failed inventions like the interrobang tried to join the ranks. The Pentagon is in open chaos and the man in charge is the reason. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll — a Ukraine hawk, a drone-defense innovator, and a close ally of JD Vance — just walked into the Oval Office, resigned to President Trump personally, and told him exactly why. Pete Hegseth has frozen flag officer promotions, is reportedly paying people inside the Pentagon to troll Americans on X, and is dragging senior leaders back to Washington for another culture war TED Talk while the Iran war goes sideways. Paul Rieckhoff has been warning about this since the confirmation fight, and on News Nation with Connell McShane he lays out why Hegseth is on thinner ice than anyone else in the cabinet. Then the map. Massachusetts just handed Ed Markey another term over Marine veteran Seth Moulton in a primary where more than 60% of the state's independents were shut out entirely. That's the rigged two-party system in miniature — a general election decided by a closed primary, and moderates left homeless while both parties race to their poles. But there's a counter-current worth watching: independent veteran Senate candidates Todd Achilles in Idaho, Brian Bengs in South Dakota, and Seth Bodnar in Montana are all looking more competitive by the week. This one is a fast, sharp read on what's collapsing at the Pentagon and what's rising in the Senate map. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Millions of American veterans are being locked out of primary elections in the country they served. Episode OverviewHow should anglers pick streamer color when the light drops out on an East Tennessee tailwater? On this East Tennessee Fishing Report from The Articulate Fly fly fishing podcast, host Marvin Cash checks in with guide Ellis Ward for a conditions update on the Watauga River and the South Holston River after an unusually wet stretch pulled the region out of a prolonged post-Helene drought. Ellis walks through how the sudden swing from months of low water to near-constant rain has scrambled the normal dam release schedule, turning a predictable one-to-six-o'clock Watauga generation window into something closer to ten-to-six or noon-to-nine depending on the day, while the South Holston has only recently returned to regular releases after the TVA system spent the better part of a year recovering from drought. That inconsistency has made dry fly fishing unpredictable, so Ellis has leaned harder into dirty water streamer fishing, night fishing and mousing to keep clients on fish. The back half of the episode tackles a listener question on late-day streamer selection: Ellis explains that a fly's color has almost nothing to do with how a trout perceives it in low light or off-color water, since a backlit fly reads only as a silhouette regardless of hue. Instead, he breaks down why opacity and water-column position, not color, drive strikes when the sun drops or the water turns dirty, using a four-inch Drunk and Disorderly as his low light standard.Key TakeawaysHow to read Watauga and South Holston release schedules when heavy rain pushes actual generation windows well beyond their posted baseline times. Why a streamer's color becomes irrelevant to trout in backlit or off-color water, since profile and opacity determine what the fish actually sees from below. When to switch to a bigger, opaque streamer fished higher in the water column for low light or dirty water strikes. How positioning a streamer near the surface exploits the same predatory "kill shot" instinct anglers see when a big trout follows a fly up before committing.Techniques & Gear CoveredEllis breaks down a practical framework for low light and off-color water streamer fishing: when light is reduced by cloud cover, a low sun angle or dirty water, color stops mattering because a backlit fly is seen only in silhouette, so the two variables that matter are opacity (how fully the fly blocks light) and where it sits in the water column. He favors densely packed materials such as deer hair or craft fur over sparsely tied bucktail for maximum light-blocking, contrasting a sparse bucktail fly with a Craft Fur Changer to illustrate how much more effectively the denser material blocks light once it's wet and compressed. He fishes that fly higher in the water column so a predatory trout gets a clean, unobstructed shot at it rather than having to hunt it out of deeper, murkier water. His go-to for these conditions is a four-inch Drunk and Disorderly, fished in white, yellow or tan with some flash since color reads as irrelevant to the fish in these conditions.Locations & SpeciesThis report covers the Watauga River and the South Holston River tailwaters in East Tennessee, both part of the TVA's 32-dam reservoir and tailwater system. The primary target species is brown trout, with the discussion centered on dry fly fishing during stable release windows and streamer fishing when water runs high or dirty. Seasonally, the region is climbing out of a prolonged drought that followed Hurricane Helene, with persistent heavy rainfall now producing extended and inconsistent dam releases, flash flooding on Watauga tributaries and a tradeoff between stained water (better streamer fishing) and clearer water (better dry fly fishing).FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredWhat color streamer should I fish in low light conditions?Color is largely irrelevant once light is reduced by clouds, a low sun angle or dirty water, because a fly viewed from below against a backlit sky reads only as a silhouette. Instead, focus on opacity (how completely the fly blocks light) and fish it higher in the water column where a trout can see and commit to it more easily. Why doesn't fly color matter to trout in dirty or backlit water? When an object is backlit or viewed through off-color water, black, white and every color in between look essentially the same dark shape, since there isn't enough light transmission for the fish to distinguish hue. What a trout actually keys on in these conditions is the fly's profile and how much light it blocks, not its color. How should I position my streamer in the water column during low light or stained water conditions?Fish it higher in the water column rather than dredging it deep, since a trout has an easier time targeting prey it can silhouette against the surface than something buried in dark, off-color water. This also mimics how predatory fish naturally corral baitfish toward the surface for an easier, more effective strike. How have this season's dam release schedules on the Watauga and the South Holston been affected by heavy rain? After a long post-Helene drought, persistent heavy rainfall has pushed the Watauga well beyond its normal generation window, turning its typical one-to-six-o'clock release into stretches closer to ten-to-six or noon-to-nine depending on the day. The South Holston only resumed regular releases in the past couple of weeks after the broader TVA system spent months recovering from low water, making dry fly fishing inconsistent this summer.Related ContentS8, Ep 50 - Navigating Summer Waters: Ellis Ward on Trout, Musky and the Art of the Evening BiteS8, Ep 37 - Big Water, Big Fish: Ellis Ward's Strategies for Streamer Fishing SuccessS7, Ep 45 - Navigating the Waters: Streamers and Strategies in East Tennessee with Ellis WardS6, Ep 128 - Catch Big Fish: Ellis Ward's Insider Tips for East Tennessee AnglersView all East Tennessee Fishing Report episodes with Ellis WardConnect with Our GuestTo learn more about Ellis, check out our interview!Follow the ShowFollow The Articulate Fly on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube.Follow our Substack newsletter for episode updates, tips and resources.Support the ShowShop through our Amazon link to support the podcast.Join our Patreon community to support the show.If you are in the industry and need help getting unstuck, learn more about our consulting options.Subscribe & AdvertiseSubscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcast app.Think our community is a good fit for your brand? On this week's episode, we've got a pair of absolute legends and friends who've both been on the show before, but never together. It's Ben Gibbard and Bob Mould. I'm not sure if either of these guys needs an introduction at this point, but here goes. Ben Gibbard is the singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter for the band Death Cab For Cutie, with whom he's been making thoughtful, gorgeous, heartfelt indie-rock for nearly 30 years now. Death Cab made its way out of the underground and into the mainstream with 2003's epic Transatlanticism, and 2003 was also the year that birthed Gibbard's unexpectedly massive side project The Postal Service. But while those two records might get a lot of the glory, Death Cab has a deep, rich catalog that continues to grow and thrive to this day. The band's latest album, I Built You a Tower, came out earlier this year, and it sits comfortably with their best. As you'll hear in this chat, he's not ashamed to play the hits while still committing himself to writing great new songs as well. Check out “Riptides” from I Built You a Tower right here. The other half of today's conversation, Bob Mould, has clearly had an influence on Gibbard—among literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of other musicians and songwriters over the years. Mould came crashing out of the gate with his band Hüsker Dü in the late 1970s, pioneering the sort of furious yet melodic punk that would define its era and whose sound reverberates to this day. After Hüsker Dü split in the late ‘80s, Mould embarked on a more contemplative solo period—pioneering the punk-goes-acoustic thing—before, in 1992, forming a trio called Sugar with David Barbe and Malcolm Travis. Sugar was the biggest commercial success of Mould's career, and for good reason: The band's two albums distilled his greatest strengths. Sugar didn't last long, but reformed just last year and have been playing triumphant gigs ever since. You can catch them on tour this year, including at Chicago's Riot Fest. I have barely scratched the surface of Mould's life and career, so forgive me for that. In this great conversation, these two chat about revisiting old albums and the question of “fan service,” about how they discover new music as they get older, and about how they prepare their bodies and brains for being on the road. It's a fun chat, and I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Ben Gibbard and Bob Mould for chatting. There's long been a double standard when it comes to older actors, where men get stay visible in powerful and romantic roles, while women are relegated to playing mom to an actor five years their junior. And while things have changed to a certain degree, there's still a lot of discourse whether actresses of a certain age should get cosmetic procedures to look younger than their true age, or whether they should let nature take its course, which could render them invisible in Tinsel Town. The Junkies discuss the pros and cons of both and ask if there's any way for older actresses to remain hot prospects on the silver screen. We have affordable and rewarding Patreon tiers! Iran was supposed to be over. It isn't. The ceasefire is going nowhere, 40% of the Navy is parked in the region, the tab is past $29 billion and climbing, and new reporting suggests as much as 70% of Iran's missile capacity is still standing. Meanwhile Ukraine just took the largest drone and missile barrage of the entire war and corporate media couldn't be bothered to lead with it. Paul sits down with Preston Stewart — West Point 2009, field artillery officer, two tours in Afghanistan, and one of the fastest-growing independent national security voices on YouTube — to get the no-BS read on where we actually are. They get into the Strait of Hormuz, the exaggerations coming out of both the Iranian regime and the Trump regime, why drones matter more than ballistic missiles right now, and how Ukraine's "kinetic sanctions" are quietly bleeding the Russian economy dry. They dig into Trump's weak hand in Beijing, Taiwan's window of vulnerability, the terrorism threat we've stopped paying attention to, and the dangerous partisan politicization of the National Guard on American streets. If you're tired of cable-news noise and want a briefing that sounds like it came from someone who's actually been on the ground, this is the conversation. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Millions of American veterans are being locked out of primary elections in the country they served. It's one of the most debated questions in modern relationships: once it's over, can you actually stay friends or is that just wishful thinking dressed up as maturity? In this episode of The John Cash Show, John poses the question directly to his audience on Threads and gets five wildly different, brutally honest answers... from a flat "no, lingering feelings make it impossible," to "yes, because the love just changed forms, not disappeared." John breaks down each response, shares his own philosophy on what separates a healthy ex-friendship from an unhealthy one, and puts listeners on the spot with a series of hypotheticals designed to make you actually think about your own answer. Along the way, John shares three real stories... including one he's a little too honest about... covering everything from accidental group chat reunions to the "coincidental" reasons people still find themselves near an ex's apartment. Whether you've stayed close with an ex, cut them off completely, or landed somewhere in between, this episode will have you rethinking exactly where you draw that line. In this episode of Scene N Nerd, Sarah and Will dive deep into the complexities of episode three of the new DC series, Lanterns, titled "OutKast." The duo explores John Stewart's pivotal interview as he shares his parents' expectations and the weight of becoming a Green Lantern. With a keen focus on the themes of parental pressure and personal agency, they discuss how John's upbringing is portrayed with authenticity and depth, shedding light on the flawed system of the Guardians and their lack of understanding of Earth's unique cultural dynamics. As they dissect the episode's flashbacks, Sarah and Will highlight the contrasting loneliness of John and Hal Jordan, revealing how their childhood experiences shape their identities and motivations. They delve into the intricacies of John's relationship with his parents, particularly the strong maternal figure of Bernadette, and how these dynamics affect his journey towards becoming a hero. The conversation also touches on the episode's broader implications regarding race, trauma, and the nuances of being a Green Lantern. Listeners can expect a thought-provoking discussion that not only examines character development but also the universal themes that resonate across different backgrounds. Jong and Michael are once again joined by Chalice Williams of Reel Movie Junkie, to discuss the latest episode of Lanterns. The trio share why the John Stewart focused episode was needed more than a Hal Jordan-centric one, giving John an origin story, the Guardian's ignorance, the process of making a Green Lantern, what did Hal's facial expression mean at the end of the episode, how does Sinestro play into Hal's treatment of John, how the series doesn't spoon feed info to viewers, the ability of the series to add questions but add new layers with each episode, parents doing their best, the incredible performances of Jasmine Cephas Jones & J. This isn't a normal episode. It's an announcement about where The Professional Speaking Show goes from here.John explains the decision behind moving the podcast from weekly to fortnightly, why the numbers that once looked promising dropped off a cliff earlier this year, and why he's stopped trying to force a recovery that isn't coming. He talks honestly about what it means to admit a show isn't finding its audience, why the podcast is becoming more of a personal passion project than a professional growth channel, and where his time and energy are moving instead: focus on coaching clients and speaking gigs, daily short-form content, and a new exclusive to YouTube content strategy. He also shares a review point. At 300 episodes, he'll decide whether the show continues at its current cadence, drops further, or ends altogether. If you're a speaker weighing up whether podcasting is the right growth channel for you, this episode is a candid look at what that decision actually costs, and how to know when a passion project should stop pretending to be a business strategy. In this episode:Why John moved from weekly to fortnightly episodesWhat happened to the show's numbers this year, and why he stopped chasing a fixThe difference between a passion project and a professional growth channel, and why the podcast is shifting to the formerWhere John is redirecting his time: prospecting, coaching clients, daily short-form content, and a new YouTube strategyHis honest take on whether podcasting is the right move for speakers starting outThe 300-episode review point and what happens nextLinks mentioned:Known, Booked & Paid Blueprint: presentinfluence.com/kbpbSubscribe to the Serious About Speaking newsletter on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/build-relation/newsletter-follow?entityUrn=6882642444815519744Find me on Insta: https://www.instagram.com/professionalspeakingpodcast/Find me on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@professionalspeakingFind me on Threads: https://www.threads.com/@professionalspeakingpodcastSubscribe and follow on your podcast platform of choice. Good research questions may be hiding in everyday clinical work. Marco Francone, MD, PhD, and Daniel Pinto dos Santos, MD, speak with host Amit Gupta, MD, about transforming clinical intuition, recurring gaps, and diagnostic challenges into focused, testable, and clinically impactful research. Listen to their discussion in episode 2 of The Early-Career Researcher's Playbook, an AJR Podcast Series. https://www.ajronline.org/doi/10.2214/AJR.26.35769 *Key Takeaways Questioning the Routine: Meaningful research often begins by simply asking "why" established practices exist. For example, questioning the necessity of a non-contrast series prior to contrast media administration when looking for abdominal hemorrhage may lead to a publishable study.   The Prospective Shift: Retrospective research may be limited by biased intuitions and imperfect hypotheses. The specialty should move toward prospective models, carefully considering the clinical impact and cost-effectiveness of potential interventions.   The "Tool-First" Trap: Pushed by a publish-or-perish academic culture, researchers may make the mistake of starting with an AI model or radiomics pipeline and then searching for a problem to which to apply it. True clinical impact more likely comes with starting with the patient problem and finding the appropriate method to solve it.   Combating Confirmation Bias: When researchers firmly believe their own clinical intuition, they risk designing studies solely to confirm their preconceived notions. To maintain scientific credibility, you should assign a colleague the specific role of opposing your views to actively try and prove your hypothesis wrong.  *Chapters 0:00 - Introduction 2:07 - What Clinical Intuition Means 6:47 - Daniel's Routine to Research 9:23 - Ideas Hiding in Workflow 11:32 - From Observation to Study Plan 14:28 - Marco's Prospective CT Example 18:26 - Avoiding Confirmation Bias 23:20 - AI Tool First Trap 29:53 - Quick Fire Takeaways 33:34 - Final Advice and Closing Follow AJR on Social Media LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/ajr-radiology/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfFAYezkLMxJGMgIJLN0Dpg Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ajr_radiology/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ajr_radiology X: https://x.com/AJR_Radiology BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/ajrradiology.bsky.social Threads: https://www.threads.com/@ajr_radiology *These sections were generated using artificial intelligence (Descript and Google Gemini) and then reviewed for accuracy.

Send us Fan MailTeachers have been told to “do more with less” for decades. But eventually, less produces less—and teachers have quietly been making up the difference with their own money, time, creativity, and stress. In this episode of Teachers in Transition, Vanessa continues the Four Horsemen of Education miniseries with the Second Horseman: Resources. She examines how teacher generosity became an unofficial funding stream for education, why a single pencil is not really just a single pencil, and how teachers became institutional shock absorbers for poorly prioritized spending. Then, in the Career Transition and Job Search segment, Vanessa turns to ghost jobs: postings for positions employers may not be actively trying to fill. Every application consumes finite resources—including time, attention, energy, and hope. Understanding the dysfunction behind ghost jobs can help transitioning teachers build rejection resilience and stop interpreting every unanswered application as a verdict on their value.IN THIS EPISODE:• Why “doing more with less” is no longer sustainable • How teachers personally subsidize classroom operations • The difference between teacher generosity and institutional responsibility • Why school spending is often a prioritization problem • What ghost jobs are and why employers post them • How ghost jobs consume applicants' unpaid labor • Why networking can reveal information a job posting cannot • How to protect your confidence and build rejection resilienceRead More about GHOST JOBS:Inc.: The End of Ghost Jobs: Why Companies Could Soon Face Huge Fines for Fake Listings https://www.inc.com/chloe-rosenberg/can-state-lawmakers-exorcise-the-hiring-market-of-ghost-jobs/91395784Forbes: 1 in 7 Job Postings Are Ghost Jobs https://www.forbes.com/sites/rachelwells/2026/04/09/1-in-7-job-postings-are-ghost-jobs-new-study-reveals-here-are-3-steps-to-avoid-fake-job-ads/Job Application Insights: Ghost Jobs on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/posts/job-app-insights_the-job-search-by-the-numbers-what-the-data-activity-7427084888153145344-2ZTy/WORK WITH VANESSA:If your job search is consuming your time, energy, and hope without producing results, you may not need to work harder. You may need a stronger strategy and help separating what you can improve from the dysfunction you cannot control.Schedule your free discovery call: https://TeachersinTransition.com/calendarSUPPORT INVISIBLE EXCELLENCE:The crowdfunding campaign for Invisible Excellence: The Hidden Value of Teachers Beyond Teaching is nearing its halfway point.
