The Randomizer (episode.lol) spat out the final episode of the disastrous Michael Chernuchin Era, which meant the Munchie Boys were force-fed the final part of some serialized content. Of course, here, this means we have long-time series regulars acting entirely uncharacteristically, including characters we'd known for 20 years. Perhaps more importantly, this episode eschews all common sense, asking society to act insanely in addition to its characters. On January 24th, 1969, one of Gregg County, Texas's most cold-blooded and savage murders occurred: that of 17-year-old Longview High School senior Leslye Dian Koon. The slaying prompted one of the city's most extensive and intensive investigations in its history. What you might call a taskforce was created that included the Gregg County Sheriff's Office, the District Attorney's Office, and Longview Police Detectives, who were on loan out of their jurisdiction. Upon the discovery of a life insurance policy in Leslye's name, the District Attorney identified three suspects who were charged, indicted, and tried for the murder. In this classic ARCHIVE RE-RELEASE from April 2019, we tapped Steve's encyclopedic knowledge of US soccer history for an essential look at an oft-overlooked event in the life of the original North American Soccer League (1968-1985), that arguably marked the "beginning of the end" of that influential circuit.] + + + Professional union labor lawyer and Society for American Soccer History sports historian Steve Holroyd returns to the podcast to go deep into one of the more curious rabbit holes in North American Soccer League history. In early 1977, Ed Garvey, a labor lawyer and head of the newly-formed National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), recruited Washington Diplomats midfielder John Kerr to help gauge interest among his teammates and those of other clubs in forming a similar organization for the suddenly ascendant ten-year-old NASL.  By the end of that summer, player representatives from all 18 league clubs agreed in principle to create the North American Soccer League Players Association (NASLPA), and on August 29th, 1977 – the day after the New York Cosmos' dramatic Soccer Bowl victory over the Seattle Sounders in Pele's US swan song – officially sought recognition by NASL owners to become the players' collective bargaining entity. Commissioner Phil Woosnam and league ownership quickly refused, fearing a threat to the still-fragile circuit's integrity by a group run by a union of the NFL, with whom NASL owners already had a tenuous (and in the cases of Ft. TEMPO DE REFLETIR 01628 – 29 de dezembro de 2025 Mateus 11:28-30 – Vinde a Mim, todos os que estais cansados e sobrecarregados, e Eu vos aliviarei. Tomai sobre vós o Meu jugo e aprendei de Mim, porque sou manso e humilde de coração, e achareis descanso para a vossa alma. Porque o Meu jugo é suave, e o Meu fardo é leve. Nessa exclusiva referência a respeito de Si mesmo como “humilde de coração”, Jesus nos apresenta a chave para o descanso que Ele nos oferece. Vivemos na cultura da “autopromoção”, da “defesa dos próprios direitos”, da “preocupação em ser o primeiro”, de “ganhar por intimidação”, da incansável busca por “tronos” e uma dúzia de outras agendas a serviço do eu. O que não entendemos é que tal atitude é precisamente o que mais destrói nossa paz. Estamos tão ocupados em nos defender, promover-nos ou manipular outros em nosso favor que nos programamos para uma nova guerra a cada dia. Mas o egoísmo pode ser muita coisa, menos algo novo: A Grécia dizia: “Seja sábio, conheça a si mesmo”. Roma ordenava: “Seja forte e se discipline”. O judaísmo insistia: “Seja bom e se ajuste à lei”. O hedonismo seduzia: “Busque o prazer e se satisfaça”. A educação orienta: “Seja hábil, expanda seu universo”. A psicologia motiva: “Seja confiante e se autoafirme”. O materialismo apregoa: “Seja possessivo, realize-se em possuir”. O humanismo ensina: “Seja capaz, creia em si mesmo”. O orgulho afirma: “Seja superior, promova os interesses pessoais”. Jesus Cristo ensinou-nos algo diferente: “Seja altruísta, vença o egoísmo subjugue a inclinação de explorar os outros e ‘tirar vantagem em tudo'. Seja generoso, porque, afinal, são os mansos que herdarão a terra. Quando eu penso neste surpreendente Jesus e em Sua desafiadora atitude, tão em descompasso com nossa natureza, eu não posso deixar de balançar a cabeça e sorrir. Em nossa sociedade ganhe-tudo-o-que-você-pode”, o conceito de vitória sobre o egoísmo e ser aquele que serve é considerado uma piada ou tolice. Paulo, depois de exortar os filhos do reino a nada fazer por partidarismo, considerar os outros superiores a si mesmo, não ter em vista o que é próprio, senão também o que é dos outros (Fp 2:3, 4), desafia-os a nutrir o mesmo sentimento encontrado em Jesus: “Embora sendo Deus, não considerou que o ser igual a Deus era algo a que devia apegar-se, mas esvaziou Se a Si mesmo, vindo a ser servo” (Fp 2:7, NVI). Reflita sobre isso no dia de hoje e ore comigo agora: Senhor Deus e Pai: ajuda-nos em nossa luta contra o eu. Toma conta de nossos impulsos, de nossas emoções e qualquer outro interesse errado. These aren't grifts or delusions — they're genuine neurological events that often leave people calmer, kinder, and less afraid of death.The "tunnel of light" isn't universal — it's cultural. Western NDEs feature tunnels and beings of light, but Buddhist and Hindu experiencers often describe rivers, bridges, or ancestors. This cultural filtering suggests NDEs are brain-based events shaped by personal beliefs — not visits to a one-size-fits-all afterlife waiting room."Clinically dead" doesn't mean the brain has completely shut down. Proponents argue NDEs prove consciousness survives death because brains were "flatlining" — but neuroscientists note that minimal brain activity can still occur undetected, and memories may be reconstructed after the fact as the brain "reboots."Dying might actually be a psychedelic experience. For the final episode of 2025 The Fisheries Podcast brings you an absolutely delightful conversation between Brendan and Dr. Nicholas Mandrak of the University of Toronto Scarborough on binomial nomenclature, the Committee on Names of Fishes, and most importantly, how and why fish get and keep and or change their scientific and or common names! Dr. Mandrak is a legendary scientist in Canadian circles, having co-authored over 250 primary publications, over 100 government reports, 40 COSEWIC reports, and five books, including the newly revised Royal Ontario Museum Field Guide to Ontario Fishes. He is Program Director of the Conservation and Biodiversity stream of the professional M.Env.Sci. program at UTSC. Nick is also a Research Associate of the Royal Ontario Museum and South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity. He is a member, and former Co-Chair, of the Freshwater Fishes Species Specialist Subcommittee of COSEWIC.
