One of Richmond's Best Singer/Songwriters, Mackenzie Roark, joins the show to discuss her latest album, Rollin' High, Feelin' Low, as well as her music journey, influences, and future plans..    Coming back to Richmond fresh off her first headlining role as a band leader, Mackenzie recounts performing at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots festival in Bristol, TN-VA, the “birthplace of country music.”    Mackenzie's new album, “Rollin' High, Feelin' Low” is a culmination of works that describe her own experiences with love and loss in relationships.. The lyrics resonate on a personal level, speaking to the challenges in our lives that make us who we are. Mackenzie recounts the production process of her album, and how she appreciates the collaboration between musicians and her producer, Trey Burnart Hall.    Later in the episode, Mackenzie plays two amazing acoustic versions of songs from her latest album: “Little Pills” and “Sweet Thing.”    Rejoining the discussion, Mackenzie describes how she has always been comfortable playing solo shows in smaller venues. They talk about the logistical and financial needs required to play as a full band in larger venues. Mackenzie shares a bit about the formation and members of her band (The Hot Pants).  Looking forward, Mackenzie describes her goals to open for a band touring the United States, setting up a small tour in Europe, and working on a follow up album.   Toward the end of the episode, Mackenzie describes her musical journey. After picking up a guitar in the fifth grade, she found confidence in her singing abilities through her youth worship band. Having started to write songs as an undergrad student at James Madison University, Mackenzie traveled to Ireland for her Masters degree. While in a creative writing program, she worked with author Joseph O'Connor, brother of the late Sinéad O'Connor, to craft a thesis composed of twelve original songs.    Lastly, Mackenzie looks forward to playing at the same venue in Harrisonburg, VA she once frequented as an audience member, and discusses upcoming shows.  Mackenzie Roark Contact Info   Website: https://mackenzieroark.com/    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mackenzieroarkmusic    Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mackenziedoark/?hl=en    YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwyCp48Ty_51CI73U_pdRgA    Bandcamp:  https://mackenzieroark.bandcamp.com/album/rollin-high-feelin-low   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/1pgk88akunmksX5jKRwVXw?si=IzdHkSwNRnmQPmYmWw5A0Q    Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/album/rollin-high-feelin-low/1649034792     Follow Small Venue Music on Social Media   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100092072434167   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/smallvenuemusic/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SmallVenueMusic    Twitter: https://twitter.com/SmallVenueMusic   TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@smallvenuemusic

Interview with The Get Right Band

Bringin' it Backwards

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 29, 2020 34:58

We had the pleasure of interviewing The Get Right Band over Zoom video! The Get Right Band released their fifth album on May 23, 2020. Itchy Soul explodes with fresh ideas and original production--voices fade into synths, drums distort and echo through space, crunchy guitars twist and bend and rage, the bass is one moment heavy and driving, the next hypnotic and groovy. The Get Right Band filters 60's/70's psychedelia and 90's alternative rock through a modern lens--as if Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana co-wrote an album produced by Danger Mouse and Dan Auerbach. There’s a new level of maturity and confidence to GRB’s fifth release. This is all-in, maximalist rock n’ roll for grown up people (kids and adults alike) who know the world is falling apart, who know social media is rotting our brains, who know politicians are taking away our rights, and who know that art and beauty and music and love and action are the antidotes. Itchy Soul will make you remember the power of music. In the first few weeks of its release, Itchy Soul has been featured on WTF with Marc Maron, Live For Live Music, and tastemaker radio stations like KEXP, WTMD, and WNCW. Eschewing the trappings and limitations of conventional recording approaches, The Get Right Band recorded and mixed the majority of the record outside of a studio. Programs had to be learned, gear bought and borrowed, techniques trial and errored. In giving themselves the time and freedom to experiment, to obsess over sounds, and to record exactly what, when, and how they wanted, they made something singular and compelling. The album features a collaboration with comedian and podcaster Marc Maron on the gritty, existential track “However Broken It Is.” After many hours in the van listening to Maron’s WTF podcast, GRB started collecting particularly poetic quotes and eventually turned them into a co-written song with Maron. Even the album cover stands out as something unique and creative--it’s augmented reality art! Just download the app Artivive and point your phone at the cover to see the artwork come to life.Compared to their previous work, the new album moves one step closer to pop with catchy hooks and modern production, and one step closer to psychedelia with experimental effects and layers of sound--all the while bringing the very best of their signature high-energy indie rock. The end result is sure to resonate with fans of modern rockers like Arctic Monkeys, Cage The Elephant, and My Morning Jacket. The lyrics of Itchy Soul take on real world problems, from the very personal--the title track explores themes of self-acceptance, isolation, and agitation--to the very global--”Future Blood” is a climate change call-to-action with driving, distorted guitars. “Fire With Rain” combines danceable grooves with well-crafted poetry about the highs and lows of life as a traveling musician: “here we are hawking magic to the disbelieving masses, with a pink neon sign lit by vaudeville’s ashes--we fight fire with rain.” The Get Right Band’s origin story goes back to 1998, when singer/songwriter/guitarist Silas Durocher poached bassist/singer Jesse Gentry from another middle school band. A lifelong friendship and musical partnership developed (along with a quirky shared sense of humor and their own made up language), and the two formed The Get Right Band in 2011. With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, the group gained a jet engine, powerhouse drummer (and a new best friend), and stepped into the great tradition of genre-bending power trios. The Get Right Band has shared the stage with Everclear, UB40, Rusted Root, Dr. Dog, Smash Mouth, Lifehouse, Dawes, Ozomatli, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Victor Wooten. They have appeared on NPR’s World Cafe, Paste Studios, and Nashville’s Music City Roots television show, and have performed at major festivals and venues including The Fillmore, The Orange Peel, Brooklyn Bowl, Theatre of the Living Arts, The Hamilton, FloydFest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, StrangeCreek, and Riverbend Fest. We want to hear from you! About This Episode At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. “My older brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and my twin had mental illnesses and cognitive disabilities,” explains Vos. “When the church kicked us out, they basically told my dad, ‘If you can’t lead your family, how can you lead your church?’” “At the time we were expelled, we lived in the church’s parish house,” explains Vos. “Suddenly, my father was unemployed and my family was homeless. My parents couldn’t afford insurance for the medical care my siblings needed. We were kicked out and completely abandoned.” However, Vos’ love of music carried on after she left the church. “Almost half of those services [were] just singing hymns,” she reflected in a recent interview. “I also went to a parochial school, so I had to memorize hymns and Bible verses all day, too. When I really look back, before I had the chance to explore music on my own, that was really central. Even the way I write songs [today] is reminiscent of hymns. That’s maybe why I was so drawn to folk music to begin with: it’s geared towards communities singing it together.” By the time Vos turned 18, her family had begun to get back on their feet. She headed to Milwaukee for college, and there, came to terms with revelations about her sexuality that her religious upbringing had forced her to repress. The mix of freedom and relief and shame and guilt was overwhelming, and a depressive breakdown ensued. “I couldn’t take care of myself,” she remembers. “I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t do anything. I stopped going to classes, and then I dropped out altogether and moved back home to Oshkosh. That’s where I met Dan.” When bassist Daniel Wolff and Vos first started playing music together, it felt as if the clouds had finally parted. Vos introduced songs she’d been writing since high school open mics, Wolff learned a new instrument for the band (the double bass), and within months, they had earned a devoted local following. Regular gigs led to steady residencies led to regional touring and their first recordings. Two of the band’s original members ultimately left the group due to opioid addictions (“I still see the pawn shop sticker every time I look at my guitar tuner,” remembers Vos), but the Dead Horses moniker the pair created as a tribute to a friend who’d over-dosed from heroin stuck even after their departure. American Songwriter called Vos “a compelling vocalist…who carries every tune with her husky, deeply emotional tone that feels lived in and real,” while No Depression hailed her songwriting as “beautiful and fresh.” With a fleshed out touring lineup, the group logged countless miles, sharing bills along the way with Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, Rhiannon Giddens and Elephant Revival in addition to making festival appearances from Bristol Rhythm and Roots to WinterWonderGrass. We were lucky enough to welcome them live on stage at Big Top Chautauqua. WMSE’s Local/Live once again returns to Club Garibaldi’s for another awesome Local/Live segment that YOU can join! On Tuesday, March 6th, we welcome Milwaukee folk group, Dead Horses for a live show and interview on-site and over the airwaves. At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. What happened next is the story of Dead Horses’ stunning new album, ‘My Mother the Moon,’ a record full of trauma and triumph, despair and hope, pain and resilience. Blending elements of traditional roots with contemporary indie folk, the album is both familiar and unexpected, unflinchingly honest in its portrayal of modern American life, yet optimistic in its unshakable faith in brighter days to come. Earthy and organic, Vos’ songs often reveal themselves to be exercises in empathy and outreach; she writes not only to find meaning in the struggles she’s endured, but also to embrace kindred souls on their own personal journeys of self-discovery… ‘My Mother the Moon’ is Dead Horses’ third album, and it follows hot on the heels of their acclaimed 2016 release, ‘Cartoon Moon,’ which Wisconsin Public Radio called “equally beautiful and effortless.” That record prompted the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to declare Dead Horses a Band To Watch and earned them honors for “Best Album,” “Best Americana/Bluegrass Artist,” and “Best Female Vocalist” at the 2017 WAMI Awards. American Songwriter called Vos “a compelling vocalist…who carries every tune with her husky, deeply emotional tone that feels lived in and real,” while No Depression hailed her songwriting as “beautiful and fresh.” With a fleshed out touring lineup, the group logged countless miles, sharing bills along the way with Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, and Elephant Revival in addition to making festival appearances from Bristol Rhythm and Roots to WinterWonderGrass. You can join WMSE and Dead Horses at Club Garibaldi’s as we team up for this live radio show. If you can’t make it, listen live over the airwaves (or in the WMSE archives). As always, WMSE Music Director Erin Wolf and co-host Cal Roach will lead Dead Horses through questions in between the live performance with the help of our audience (audience participation is encouraged!). Doors are at 5:30pm and the segment starts at 6pm and runs until 7pm. Club Garibaldi’s is located at 2501 S. Superior Street in Bay View. This is a 21+ event which is FREE and open to the public. Again, if you can’t join us for the live segment and show at Club Garibaldi’s, please tune in, per usual, to 91.7 FM (or stream online at WMSE.org) at the 6 o’clock hour.
