Send a textBack in 2022, I talked with Ben Vaughn, whose music and radio show I've been a fan of for years. Ben has enjoyed a great career as a performer, songwriter, composer for film and TV, and record producer. He's produced records by Ween, Arthur Alexander, and Charlie Feathers, and also collaborated with Alan Vega, Alex Chilton and Los Straitjackets. His songs have also been recorded by artists including Marshall Crenshaw, The Morells, and Deer Tick. Needless to say, Ben Vaughn has encountered some colorful characters in his musical journey. His friend Laura Pochodylo, who works for Sun Records in Nashville, wrote the names of those colorful characters down and placed them in a hat. Names like Jonathan Richman, Arthur Alexander, Willie Nelson, Nancy Sinatra and more. So, what do they do with those names? Laura selects a few at random and Ben relives the stories—no pre-planning, no filter —just telling it like it was, straight from the hat. "Straight From The Hat" The New Jersey born Ben Vaughn has put out close to twenty albums, including personal favorites of mine like Beautiful Thing, Mood Swings and Ben Vaughn Blows Your Mind. Aside from his own records, Vaughn has produced records by Ween, Los Straitjackets, Nancy Sinatra, and Charlie Feathers, had his songs covered by everyone from Marshall Crenshaw to Deer Tick and collaborated with the likes of Alex Chilton, Alan Vega, and Rodney Crowell. Vaughn loves punk and surf and rockabilly and folk and country and the blues, which explains the versatility of his collaborations. And if that wasn't an impressive enough resume, let's add these two career highlights: he penned the themes for both Third Rock From The Sun and That 70's Show. Oh, and he hosts the fabulous radio show The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn. Released in 1972, #1 Record is the debut album by Big Star, a band from Memphis, Tennessee that blended British Invasion melodies with Southern soul and jangly guitar pop. Though it wasn't a commercial success upon release, the album became one of the most influential records in rock history — laying the groundwork for what would later be called power pop.Led by Alex Chilton (formerly of The Box Tops) and Chris Bell, the album is full of shimmering harmonies, chiming guitars, and bittersweet lyrics about youth, love, and longing. Songs like “The Ballad of El Goodo”, “Thirteen”, and “When My Baby's Beside Me” showcase the band's knack for melody and emotional depth, while tracks such as “Feel” and “Don't Lie to Me” add a raw rock edge.Despite glowing reviews, poor distribution from their label, Ardent Records (through Stax), meant #1 Record didn't reach a wide audience at the time. However, its influence can be heard in countless bands that followed, including R.E.M., The Replacements, Teenage Fanclub, and Wilco. Today, it's celebrated as a cornerstone of American pop-rock, a perfect mix of heartache and harmony that captures both the innocence and melancholy of early 1970s youth.

Today's guest is Chris Stamey. He's done A LOT! He grew up in North Carolina, playing bass with Mitch Easter and Peter Holsapple. They played in churches and coffee shops because those were the only places at the time that encouraged original music. Around this time he began studying music at the University of North Carolina. He transferred to NYU but because of some weird scheduling issues, his music studies translated to a degree in philosophy. But his time there also introduced him to Alex Chilton and Richard Lloyd. Richard played a huge part in the formation of one of Chris' early bands, The dB's. We barely scratch the surface of his career here.  Chris is very candid about his time in The dB's as well as his latest album, Anything Is Possible. It took shape in a unique way and there are some unusual musical ideas there; like combining Humphrey Bogart with Roy Orbison. That'll make more sense once you listen to the episode. Formed in 1971, Big Star’s original lineup included Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Andy Hummel, and Stephens. The band released three albums—#1 Record (1972), Radio City (1974), and Third/Sister Lovers (recorded in 1974, released in 1978)—which, despite initial commercial struggles, later garnered critical acclaim and influenced numerous artists . In 1993, he participated in a reformation of the band alongside Chilton and members of The Posies, resulting in the 2005 album In Space.  Beyond Big Star, Stephens has collaborated with various groups. He joined the alt-country supergroup Golden Smog (with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco), contributing to albums like Weird Tales (1998) and Another Fine Day (2006) . In 2015, he formed Those Pretty Wrongs with Luther Russell, releasing their self-titled debut in 2016, followed by Zed for Zulu (2019) and Holiday Camp (2023) . Stephens has also been a longtime fixture at Ardent Studios in Memphis, where Big Star recorded their albums. He joined the Ardent staff in 1987 and has served as Vice President of Production am— and other titles, working under founder John Fry (who died in 2014 at age 69). Under his tenure, Ardent has continued to be a vital recording venue for artists across genres.  Today, Jody Stephens remains active in music, performing, recording, and contributing to the legacy of Big Star and Ardent Studios (he still works at Ardent). He is the last surviving member of Big Star’s original lineup, but still plays the music with the Big Star Quartet at shows across the world. 

My intermittent series on something either denied classic status on release, or has been forgotten about since. I wanted to review this all time fave but struggled to know if it belonged here. It DID get classic status, but many years after it was made, and that was the 90s. Since then the final, notorious and never conclusively released final album from Alex Chilton's power-pop inventing Big Star, has faded from view. Like Nick Drake around the same time period, they released two classic, hugely influential, critically acclaimed albums, that sold nothing and left them to produce one final angry, dejected, hopeless finale. Often ranked as one of the darkest and most harrowing of albums, it's shot through with brilliance and bitter beauty.

Immediately after Uncle Tupelo co-leaders Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy parted ways 30 years ago, bassist John Stirratt and his fellow bandmates followed Tweedy into a new band, Wilco. Now Stirratt and Tweedy are the only members left from that original lineup, and Stirratt reflects on Wilco's exciting, turbulent early years as well as the more stable past two decades with the same lineup. Then there's Stirratt's other band, the Autumn Defense, which he and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone (who joined Wilco later) formed to highlight their melodic songwriting and sweet lead vocals. Ten years have passed since the last Autumn Defense album, but a new one is coming. From playing with the unpredictable Alex Chilton while a young man in the South (and singing his songs later) to entering the hospitality industry from his current home in Maine and being on call for Wilco, the ever-gracious Stirratt has many adventures to share.

After spending a year and half out firmly planted in psychedelia, The Beatles returned to Earth at the beginning of 1968 with "Lady Madonna," a Paul-penned tune that pays tribute to the strength of women, a topic he mines throughout his career. The song also serves an homage to New Orleans' piano legend and rock and roll trail blazer Fats Domino, and marks maybe the first time the band created their own intentional throwback to the early rock and roll of their youth. It's a grooving song with a fantastic shuffle from Ringo, some great faux-horn vocals from George and Paul. It always feels like a little slice of home to me, perhaps because New Orleans music is at the root of the song. To talk about New Orleans piano music, there are few better than Davis Rogan. Davis is known internationally as a master of the artform, and one of New Orleans' classic larger than life personalities. That personality is so big, it spawned a main character on HBO's popular Treme series. He's worked in radio, worked as a music teacher, been at the forefront of the hybrid of brass music, funk and hip-hop with his band All That. Dan talks with Bret Tobias, formerly of The Bigger Lovers and Moped, now helming The Bret Tobias Set. From seeing the Replacements on MTV, discovering House of Love and Philly's own The Wishniaks, it was inevitable that Bret make his life about music. Bret talks about his aversion to being classified in any scene or community, the independent music feeding frenzy of the mid 90s that had Moped being wined and dined by A&R and execs, and the sudden, overnight disappearance of said attention. He takes us through the saga of The Bigger Lovers and the many records and tours alongside some of their heroes (Superchunk, Minus 5, Jonathan Richman, Alex Chilton, etc), and how he's always kept something going musically, no matter what. The Bret Tobias Set put out an absolutely stellar EP last year called 'Pleaser Vol. 1', and the band is a who's-who of Philadelphia indie rock, featuring members of A.M. Mills, Photon Band, and The War On Drugs. A new record is on the way this fall, and we're honored to offer a special sneak peak at their upcoming single, "Fait Accompli", due out on June 20th.

Ten inch records are the forgotten treasures of my library. They’re housed in a little side section of my entertainment center, and most are rarely touched. This is why a couple of weeks ago I decided to have a marathon listening session of those very records.  These sort of releases generally form a handful of different types of material. They can be extended singles filled with previously unreleased bonus tracks (Guided By Voices, Jesus & Mary Chain). They can be rarities collections of b-sides or outtakes (The Clash, Bad Brains). Or they can be fully-fledged brand new releses (Geoff Palmer & Lucy Ellis, The Coolies).  Plus, this theme allows me to celebrate the 11th year anniversary of the reunion of The Replacements! Songs For Slim came out on March 5, 2013, and this obviously led to their hitting the road a year later. Topping off their set, I also included the cover of “Route 66” that was the highlight of their 1987 “Alex Chilton” EP. Thanks also must go to various folks that had suggestions for tonight’s show, including the band White Rose Motor Oil, who contributed the tracks of the last set of tonight’s broadcast.

The members of New Orleans-based Americana band Loose Cattle have separately, or collectively, made music with luminaries like Alex Chilton, Bob Mould, Allen Touissaint, Pete Townshend, Frank Black, The Iguanas, The Breeders, Goldfinger, The Whiskey Gentry, Tav Falco, and Teenage Fanclub. Loose Cattle will be at The Linda - WAMC's Performing Arts Studio on Friday, March 15.

In this podcast, Jeff admits that although he is not a Trump fan, it's simply impossible to ignore the fact that the criminal and civil trials brought against him were done so to prevent his election. None of these cases were serious enough that they needed to be brought. But they were and it wouldn't be so painful if his opponent was even remotely competent. But Joe Biden has opened the floodgates to millions of illegals including criminals, terrorists and spies — and now we will all pay. Biden's foreign policy decisions regarding Israel are now wholly impacted by Hamas supporters in Michigan, a state he feels he can't afford to lose. So while dozens of Americans were killed and kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, Biden is hell-bent on saving Hamas in order to gain the Muslim terror vote. Claiming that Hamas doesn't speak for the Palestinian people is also an easily-proven lie.Two musical interludes today: Lou Reed/The Velvet Underground and Big Star. Two hugely important bands that were ahead of their time. Jeff describes his dinner with Lou Reed as the time of his life. Using the urinal next to Big Star's Alex Chilton was also a fine moment.And lastly, Jeff provides a huge update on his Assisting Suicide case in upstate New York. 

Gary Talley and Rick Levy are members of The Box Tops, the band that hit the top of the charts in 1967 with "The Letter" which sold over 4 million copies. They followed it up with "Cry Like A Baby", a #2 hit in 1968. Gary is an original member of the band. Rick joined the band in 2015.
