The Paramedic Coach discusses EMS education, NREMT certification, and gives career advice and insight to new EMS providers. EMT Training and Paramedic Training can be very accelerated and students can get left behind. My goal with this podcast is to help students pass school and the NREMT exams. I believe that anyone out there who wants to serve their community as an EMT or Paramedic should be able to do that. My aim is to decrease the failure rates of NREMT exams and help students pass the NREMT exam the first time. Whether you are preparing for EMT/Paramedic School, in EMS classes right now, or studying for your NREMT exams this podcast is built for you.I look forward to seeing your EMS education and NREMT exam success! Be Great, Evan, The Paramedic Coach®

NREMT also calls this a re-entry pathway to certification meaning you had your NREMT in the past but now your NREMT has expired. The first step in gaining your national registry certification back is completing CAPCE accredited CE which is the same hours as a full recertification program hours. The next step after that is passing the NREMT written (cognitive) examination. You will also need to verify your skills to begin to practice again as an EMT, AEMT or Paramedic. In this concise video, I summarize all the updates from NREMT and what you need to know to prepare and pass the NREMT exam for ALS providers. The NREMT exam is the exam all levels of EMS certification take after they complete and pass an approved educational program. Once the student passes NREMT, they then apply for their state license to practice and start applying for jobs as an EMT/Paramedic provider. The national registry has four levels of examination, EMR, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, the new changes in this video are only for the AEMT and Paramedic level exams. Mike tours fire departments, EMS agencies, police departments all across the United States with his series "station cribs" that shows an in-depth look inside the walls of your local fire department or first responder station. Learn More (Video Study Course): https://www.prepareforems.comGet my EKG/12-Lead EKG Masterclass: https://www.ekgforems.comI had to report on yet another important EMS education update from NREMT. The NREMT psychomotor exams for ALS providers such as advanced EMT and Paramedic level exams are being discontinued starting July 1st, 2024. I believe this is a good step in the right direction for our profession as one of the biggest complaints of NREMT candidates would be an inconsistent testing experience due to different types of proctors or testing centers. This will be especially helpful for those students who if failed had to previously travel to other locations (some time hours and hours away) for another attempt to pass. Last year NREMT had removed the EMR and EMT psychomotor exams and now they have followed that up with removing the AEMT and Paramedic psychomotor exams. Now students at all levels will have their skills signed off by their class instructors and program directors. Now every level of certification will have one cognitive examination as reported by NREMT, I never thought I would see the day! Be great, Evan, The Paramedic Coach #emt #nremt #ems

Since NREMT has partnered up with the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) they have making a ton of changes to update their exams. This is the 3rd update just in the last year from national registry (NREMT) that I have reported on here on the channel. From what I can see, scoring report wise this should be the final change but NREMT does have some changes coming soon to ALS certification exams which I will be reporting on very soon! Learn More (Video Study Course): https://www.prepareforems.comGet my EKG/12-Lead EKG Masterclass: https://www.ekgforems.comAfter working with tens of thousands students with the goal of passing the NREMT exam, there are usually four main mistakes the student is making preparing for their NREMT exam. And the strategies I talk about here apply to every EMS certification level; EMR, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic. The NREMT cognitive examination is broken up into five main categories: Airway, respiration and ventilation, cardiology and resuscitation, trauma, medical/OBGYN and EMS operations with 85% adult questions and 15% pediatric questions. Too many students use resources that do not help them learn the way they think. If you are a visual learner watching videos may be a lot more helpful than reading chapters in your textbook. Another critical point is that practice questions have a place as an assessment tool but that is not studying content or making you smarter in terms of content. You should study content then assess yourself after studying the content sections. I hope this video points you in the right direction to conquer and pass your NREMT exam! And that can happen to anyone seeing some of the calls that we see. I know for me personally, if someone mentions, what's the craziest call you had? There's a handful of scenes that automatically pop into my head. What's not okay is providers who make fun of new people, don't remember how it was when they first started out or even worse bring their personal drama to their ambulance work. I have always been a big on separating work life from your personal life especially when working 911 EMS. In this video, I breakdown a poll that some of my original students answered back in 2020 on what makes a great EMS partner. I can tell you from experience who you work with really makes or breaks EMS work, try out different shifts and try to find 3 to 5 partners that really enjoy working with it will serve you incredibly well. But few EMS educators talk about the how to protect both the patient and yourself on "everyday calls." In this video, I talk about patients who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and how to best assess them. What makes a great EMT or Paramedic is to always put yourself in the patient's shoes. If you called 911, how would you want to be assessed, how would you like the EMT or Paramedic to speak with you about your care. After seeing hundreds of alcohol-related calls in the ambulance, I came up with my own "ETOH Assessment" that I now share with you. This patient assessment skill that I teach you will not only be great for your documentation to cover yourself, but will also help the patient if something else is going on that is causing their altered mental status. Do this for every altered mental status call, and you can't go wrong. Be great, Evan, The Paramedic Coach #EMS #EMT #Paramedic #NREMT

Some start their career by being on a volunteer fire department while others try to volunteer at their local ambulance corps. Which ever path you want to take the first step I recommend to everyone is your EMT class, that gives you a foot in the door in both professions, then based on your experiences, where you want to live, and the options presented to you, you can make a decision on the fire department or stick with EMS completely. I discuss in this video the main differences between working as a firefighter and working as a paramedic, my aim is that this video puts you on the right path. One key note, if you are brand new is that aiming for your Paramedic certification in some fire departments, this alone can make you a stand out candidate to join. For those of you that already possess fire certifications, gaining a EMS certification and going through EMT school or Paramedic school can help you a ton with getting hired. Traditionally if you fail NREMT, you get back either a below passing, near passing or above passing result marked in the 5 main categories. The 5 national registry exam categories of Airway/Respiration/Ventilation, Cardiology and Resuscitation, Trauma, Medical/OBGYN, and EMS operations would each give you back one of the above "scores." Now the NREMT is changing this to what I believe will be some sort of "stat" or "numeric" value. The news article simply states that a "scaled score" will be provided, I hope a example will be provided for candidates to see soon. Reminder to all there is no said change to the way the exam itself is scored, rather NREMT aims to provide more feedback to failed attempts in order to help assist the student pass next time. One of the most critical roles as EMTs and Paramedics is lifting and moving patients. Unfortunately, your patient can be anywhere, requiring various lifting techniques and procedures. Secondly, working in the back of the ambulance, all day there is a lot of bending and awkward movements you will be required to perform. For example, starting a difficult IV while the ambulance is moving and keeping your balance. I could go on and on but core strength and strong functional lifting abilities will help you tremendously in EMS. One thing I didn't mention in the podcast video, that I want to mention here is stress management and taking time to make sure YOU are healthy and that YOU are OK. So many of us in EMS focus on patient's day in and day out that we forget to take care of ourselves.
