The New Zealand manufacturer of Jaffas, RJ's, has confirmed falling sales has meant it cannot keep making them. Massey University marketing professor Bodo Lang spoke to Corin Dann.
The end of an era for one of our most iconic sweets. Levin confectioner RJ's has discontinued production of Jaffas, due to poor sales. The orange-coated balls of chocolate were previously produced by Cadbury in Dunedin and have been on our shelves for almost a century. Mike Hutcheson, former Managing Director of Saatchi & Saatchi, told Mike Hosking that a competitor would pick up Jaffas in a heartbeat. He says it's not just a sweet, it's a symbol, and it's possible to turn it around and make Jaffas a brand that means something. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Have any spare change? Do you still use cash and coins? The US Treasury Department and US Mint announced that it will stop making pennies after it runs out of the blank templates used to make the coins, saving the government $56 million a year in materials costs. There is no indication that pennies will be taken out of circulation, only that new pennies will not be produced. This move should have no impact on electronic purchases - ACH, Wire, Debit, Credit, etc. A few news articles on the subject: https://www.axios.com/2025/05/22/penny-coins-end-production-2026 https://www.axios.com/2025/05/24/treasury-penny-production-trump-shopping-change This issue is not unique to the United States. Canada, Australia and New Zealand stopped producing their penny-equivalents years ago. The cost to produce $0.01 is now approximately $0.0369 per penny, causing a loss to the US Mint of approximately $85.3 million. And our other coins are similarly expensive to produce: $0.05 nickel costs $0.1378 per coin $0.10 dime costs $0.0576 per coin $0.25 quarter costs $0.1468 per coin It may be time to start using all those pennies we're currently saving in jars and piggybanks. What do you think? How will stopping the production of the penny impact you? Let us know if you enjoy this episode and, if so, please share it with your friends! This just might be the highest margin inventory you will ever sell on Amazon. I'm talking about discontinued items where the DEMAND is rising and the SUPPLY is shrinking. Until now it's been a bit of a guessing game for most sellers to find the golden opportunities. However, today on a new episode we discuss the incredible opportunities behind sourcing and selling discontinued items on Amazon. Introducing the launch of: ProvenDiscontinuedSourcing.com You can even learn to source these right on Amazon, hold them for a few weeks or a couple months and flip them right back on Amazon at crazy markups as demand predictability soars... It only makes sense that some items would go up in value once they stop being made. Are you selling any items like that? Do you have a system for finding them consistently? What if you could get ahead of these discontinued trends and stock up a bit of the hottest items right before they vanish? That's exactly what our guest today has been doing for several years with Incredible results. He's selling products for $30 that he sourced for less than five. He's making net profit margins that are off the charts in many cases. On today's new podcast episode we show you proven discontinued sourcing strategies.
