They also share warning signs that fatigue may be masking your fitness and simple strategies to help you train smarter, recover better, and see real progress in the gym.

It's struck me that people are bombarded by a lot of nuance and detail about physical training and fitness. And it's true you can go deep into the weeds if you're looking to maximise performance and conditioning. Not to mention appearance. But that's irrelevant to someone who isn't currently moving. The path to getting stronger is brilliantly simple: start lifting something. And beginning with your own body seems a solid and tech-free first step. Ross Mitchell and I have stayed in touch since he was a tutor on my Personal Training course and I always value his radical candour and ability to break the complicated and often emotionally complex into simple action. Here he runs through the literal exercises you can do to start building strength - for a stronger body today and when you're old. If you're looking to get stronger, I'd recommend following Ross (after listening to him here, of course). Let me know if this is useful. Remember something is always better than nothing when it comes to fitness. Go well and keep moving friends,
In this mini episode, Dr. Derrick Hines explains why strength gains often stall as people get older — and why it's usually not because of age itself. This conversation breaks down the misunderstanding around effort, intensity, and recovery, and introduces a smarter way to think about training as the body changes. Rather than avoiding challenge, the episode highlights how properly applied intensity is essential for maintaining strength, resilience, and independence over time.Topics Covered:Why strength decline is not inevitable with ageThe role of effort and intensity in strength gainsCommon training mistakes that limit progressHow to challenge the body safely and effectivelyWhy strength is foundational for long-term health

She has over 20 years of experience in the field of health & nutrition. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics from Central Michigan University in 2002- the same University her oldest son attends currently! In 2010, she earned a Master's Degree in Nutrition from CMU as well. She has worked in a variety of settings including public health and in the outpatient clinical setting. Her primary interest has always been in weight management, and while she was able to do some of this in the clinical setting, she had a better idea. She knew her clients could see better success with weight loss if they had more support and encouragement than what their insurance covered, so she built a program to better meet these needs. In January 2019 she started her business, Inspire Health & Wellness. She didn't have a clue about running a business, but she had a passion, and she knew she could help people. She created a Facebook page and a flyer, and she got to work! Soon after she started her business it was evident to her that nutrition & fitness go hand and hand, and while she had always been active, She didn't have the knowledge or training to support others with their fitness. She has since become a Certified Personal Trainer, and she so enjoys the fitness aspect of her work.
To maximize strength and muscle growth, how many sets should you perform per week for each muscle and exercise? A year ago, we reported on a meta-study that found surprisingly low levels of training volume were sufficient to maximize strength gains. To say that had us confused is to put it mildly. It's finally time to revisit the topic of training volume for strength. Today, we have a new analysis of the same data from a year ago, showing that you might actually have to train a lot more to maximize your strength gains. Phew. All is right with the world again. *** Do you like what you hear so far? Please leave a five-star review in your podcast player. And hit that follow button! You can also follow us on Instagram. Podcast OverviewIn this episode, Arnold tackles one of fitness culture's most overlooked truths: you can build muscle alone, but you can't build lasting strength without others. After witnessing over 50 personal records at a Pump Club beach event, Arnold reflects on why the gym community of the 1970s produced not just champions, but a movement, and why that same energy is disappearing from modern fitness. And if you've ever felt like you're not living up to your potential, Arnold suggests some of your actions might be influencing your output in ways you don't realize.Arnold explores the science behind why training around others makes you lift heavier, push harder, and show up more consistently. This week on Better Business, Better Life, Debra Chantry-Taylor sits down with Laurie Seymour, an EOS implementer, and Curtis Williams, her very first client and the owner of a thriving personal training studio.Curtis shares how the pandemic forced him to adapt, offering free Zoom classes that eventually evolved into a structured, scalable business model. Laurie, who found EOS after struggling with self-implementation, helped Curtis bring order and accountability into the business through tools like the Level 10 Meeting and the scorecard. Together, they reveal how EOS has transformed Curtis's gym into a model built for growth. The conversation also explores the personal side of their relationship, from Laurie regaining her health and strength through Curtis's training, to Curtis finding clarity and confidence as a leader. With insights on defining core values, staying the course with EOS, and planning for expansion, this episode is a masterclass in how structure and discipline create freedom.Whether you're running a small business or looking to scale, Laurie and Curtis's journey proves that with focus and the right tools, long-term success is well within reach.CONNECT WITH DEBRA: ___________________________________________ ►Debra Chantry-Taylor is a Certified EOS Implementer | Entrepreneurial Leadership & Business Coach | Business Owner►Connect with Debra: debra@businessaction.com.au ►See how she can help you: https://businessaction.co.nz/►Claim Your Free E-Book: https://www.businessaction.co.nz/free-e-book/ ____________________________________________ GUESTS DETAILS: ► Laurie Seymour - LinkedIn ► Laurie Seymour - EOS Worldwide ► Curtis Williams - LinkedIn► Life Techs Fitness Episode 239 Chapters: 00:00 – Introduction 00:53 – Background of the Guests 01:35 – Laurie's Journey to Becoming an EOS Implementer 05:48 – Curtis's Introduction to EOS09:00 – Implementing EOS in a Personal Training Business 12:40 – Challenges and Solutions in Implementing EOS13:37 – Impact of EOS on Business Operations27:16 – Personal and Professional Growth27:47 – Tips for Business Owners41:12 – Final Thoughts and Future Plans
Today on the podcast I'm breaking down a hard truth a lot of runners need to hear: Why You're Not Getting Stronger (Even Though You're Lifting). If you've been showing up, moving weight, and still not seeing results, it's not because you're broken—it's because your plan isn't sending a strong enough signal. We'll cover what real intensity feels like, how to progress week after week, why recovery is the secret sauce you keep skipping, and how to choose the right lifts for your goals. You'll leave with a simple, runner-friendly template and clear steps to course-correct fast. Stronger running demands stronger muscles, but strength doesn't happen by accident—it happens by design. Dial in the signal, respect recovery, and watch your numbers climb while your miles feel easier. Let's fix the gaps, build real strength, and make your next eight weeks the most productive you've had in the gym to date. The post 295. Why You're Not Getting Stronger (Even Though You're Lifting) appeared first on Running Lean with Patrick McGilvray.
Some things definitely diminish with age, but the need for strength is not among them. After being introduced to designing fitness training for others in the Coast Guard and a career in the California Highway Patrol, Ralph Caggiano turned to helping clients get stronger as they age. In this episode of Quah (Q & A), Sal, Adam & Justin answer four Pump Head questions drawn from last Sunday's Quah post on the @mindpumpmedia Instagram page. Mind Pump Fit Tip: 9 Reasons Getting Stronger is the Best Physical Pursuit. (1:58) The different stages of raising a child. (24:07) The ultimate nootropic, methylene blue. (42:27) Peeing outside. I work from home most days, and I like to spread my workout throughout the day. (57:45) #Quah question #2 – How to break through plateaus? I've been stuck on preacher curls, among other exercises, for two months. (1:02:39) #Quah question #3 – I'm about as beginner as a beginner can get when it comes to lifting, to the point that I don't know how to get started, and I have no clue what my baseline is. Do I just go to the weight bench and throw on some plates? What is the very first step for someone who has never lifted? (1:04:40) #Quah question #4 – You always mention going for a walk after a meal. Does going before eating have the same benefits or not? If your gymnast is putting in the work—20, 25, even 30 hours a week in the gym—but still not building muscle or getting noticeably stronger, it's time to take a closer look at what's really going on.In today's episode, I'm breaking down one of the most common frustrations I hear from parents and gymnasts: "She trains so much… so why isn't she getting stronger or putting on muscle?"Spoiler: It's not usually about protein. Here's the truth: Most gymnasts are not struggling to get enough protein—contrary to popular belief. While many families hyper-focus on protein, most gymnasts actually eat enough of it. What is common, though, is poor timing and distribution of that protein throughout the day. Especially in the chaos of summer training, when structure fades and routines shift, fueling often falls apart.
No Kings Day rallies across the country drew more than 5 million protestors. At the same time, the crowds at Donald Trump's pathetic birthday parade he threw for himself was very poorly attended, as photos attest. Glenn had the honor of addressing the crowd at the No Kings Day rally in Leesburg Virginia. He looks at crowd pictures from the nationwide No Kings Day rallies as compared to photos of Trump's pathetic little birthday parade in DC.
