A podcast dedicated to reaching out a sisterly hand to women struggling with their place in fundamentalist communities, and telling the stories of triumph that so often go unnoticed.

Molly's story will knock your socks off. Like many, she grew up in a moderately evangelical family. The rules were clear, Jesus first, purity, and obedience. She was raised to be a wife, and when she was 20 that's what she became. Quickly she realized that this new life didn't afford her the freedom that she hoped. She married a man who went to Moody college and had his heart set on being a pastor. Molly was apprehensive to become a pastor's wife, but she was told that her dreams for herself no longer mattered now that she was yoked to her husband. Her life was meant only to support him. Listen to her story of courage and triumph, how she found her footing and made a new life. (The audio is a bit skippy in places. Bear with us, it's totally worth it to make it to the end of this one!!) If you have any questions or want to share your own story in extremism, please get in touch! Purity culture took a dark turn in the early 2000’s with the popularity of Joshua Harris’s book, ‘I Kissed Dating Goodbye.’ All across America evangelical churches preached the gospel of purity, made up by a 21 year old who’d never dated.Payton and her husband Andrew began their relationship with the book in mind, like thousands of others who followed advice given to them by trusted leaders. After they married and their life together progressed they realized how deeply flawed the church’s new adopted style of courting was. Listen to their story and the courageous way they struggled together to build a better life and a more authentic love.If you have any questions or want to share your own story in extremism, please get in touch! Just wait until you meet Charlotte. Raised in the midwest by parents and grandparents who were atheists, she found her own way to Christianity. As we've learned though, when your heart and mind is open, the journey rarely stops there. Listen to her story, as she took courageous steps to leave an abusive marriage and discovered who God is and what she's capable of. Would you like to meet one of my favorite people?Honestly, my personal endorsement should be enough, but just in case:Allie is a badass. She’s the kind of girl who sees a problem and figures out the solution without waiting around to ask why someone hasn’t done it already. She, along with her sister Kate (the first woman we interviewed on the podcast!!) fought to save their little sisters from the abusive mother that no one was courageous enough to save them from. Surrounded by obstacles and plagued by the guilt religious leaders laid on their weary backs, they fought. With little money and support and all the burdens of college and their own lives, fresh from the corruption of orthodoxy, they prevailed. Allie’s story is one we can all learn from. She and her sister are the very best kind of people, they were beat down and hurt and given no help, they had to claw their way into a better a life and through that, somehow, they never lost a bit of kindness or let bitterness grow within them. They’re full of grace and love like no one I’ve ever met. It may not be the most wonderful time of year for most of us, but it's certainly one we've needed to spend a lot of time talking about and processing with each other! Join (friend of the show) Yael and I (Callie) as we walk down memory lane remembering Passovers of years past, the things we miss, the things we don't miss....and get distracted (as usual!). Noelle is the daughter of a Baal teshuva (a Jew who grew up non religious) father and a convert mother, when her family left modern orthodoxy and moved towards a more strict yeshivish lifestyle she struggled under the weight of what that difference meant in her daily life. When her family's rabbi decided that her mother's conversion was invalid and that she and her siblings would need to convert, it rocked her world. Noelle's courage as she worked through her issues with Judaism, a skewed view of her body due to years of religious oppression, and discovering a sexuality that she didn't even know was a possibility is nothing short of awe inspiring. Noelle is a warrior whose first victory was saving herself. She will no doubt help save countless others. Join us as we embark on episode 1 of our sex education series! Oh yeah, we're going there. So many of us who were raised with religion weren't given the tools to safely and responsibly approach sex. Luckily I (Callie) was raised with one kick ass sister who has never once balked at a question or funny anecdote (and y'all there have been MANY). Special thanks to my fantastic older (by like, yeeeears) sister, Chelsea. Send in your questions and comments for our follow up Q&A episode. Stamford Hill is located in a small borough of London and home to the largest Hasidic Jewish Population in Europe. The roughly 68,000 people who live there make it their life's mission to raise invisible walls that shut out the world beyond the two square miles of their community. Leah was raised there, kept hidden away because she was different, then was married off quickly with the hope that she'd fall in line. But Leah was born with an inquisitiveness that couldn't be stifled by being locked away in an attic or married to a man she didn't know. She was born into a life she didn't want, and as so many women have before her, and will after, she did her best with what she had and blazed a new path for herself and her child. We've told you why we left, but a question we've gotten over and over is: what does life look like now? There's a common belief in the orthodox world that anyone who leave regrets it. Listen to find out if we do. (Spoiler alert: if the answer was 'yes' then running a podcast and nonprofit to help women and men transition out would be a horrible idea!)If you have any questions or want to share your own story, please get in touch on: Email: Courageousheartspodcast@gmail.com Instagram: @Courageousheartspodcast twitter: @Calliewriting or join our private Facebook group The Untold Stories of Courageous Hearts Podcast to get in on the conversation! This week on Untold Stories of Courageous Hearts we're sharing Yohanan's Story. If you listened to our last featured story, you've already met his wife, Shifra. The couple left one of the most extreme ultra orthodox Jewish communities in the world, not knowing much English, much less how they would survive in a world completely alien to the cloistered one they left. Yeah... we're going there. Buckle up for our breakdown of Haredi Judaism as we begin to explain the differences between sects of ultra Orthodoxy. For sure don't join us if you're hoping for a scholarly approach to this bullshit...I mean, have you met us?? We're not professionals. We're just shining a light on corruption and hoping it makes a small difference. Meet Shifra, a woman who grew up in Kiryas Tosh, a Hasidic village north of Montreal, Quebec. Once married she began to yearn for a community that was more breathable, one where she could become herself in a way that wasn't allowed in the cloistered yiddish speaking world she didn't fit into. As she took steps away with her husband, community leaders and her family tried to pull her back, and fought the young couple every inch of the way. The courage it took her to leave is astounding. As she stepped into a world she didn't know how to navigate she had to learn a new language, and adapt to new customs in a place like a foreign country to her, even though it was only 25 miles from where she lived all her life. Listen and be inspired and reminded that no matter the odds, no matter who says 'no,' the life you want is only a few hard decisions away. This week we're so honored to share Judy's story with you. Judy is a young woman who was adopted by a Chassidish family as an infant and never felt that she fit into a world of long skirts and bowed heads. As so many before her she was married off at a young age, and only then realized that she couldn't pretend any longer. Listen and hear her story of overcoming a life that was never hers, and addiction that she used to cope. There are so many that won't get the chance to leave, who aren't sure if the risks are worth freedom from the chains that bind them. Judy stared down a dark road and took one step after another, and found the light. If you have any questions or want to share your own story, please get in touch on: Email: Courageousheartspodcast@gmail.com Instagram: @Courageousheartspodcast twitter: @Calliewriting or join our private Facebook group The Untold Stories of Courageous Hearts Podcast to get in on the conversation! You guys know how we love a good rant? Well, lately we've heard a lot of complaints from Orthodox Jews who say that there aren't really marriage expectations put on young women and men. Gaslighting like that can really hit those who leave hard, it makes them question if what they experienced was real or if maybe those who are still wrapped up in fundamentalism are right. So for this episode I interviewed 25 people who are at various points in their observance and Jackie and I discuss why the claim that there are realistic expectations put on women and men is absolute bullshit. This week we talk about what it means to keep Shabbos, the 25 hour Jewish day of rest that culminates the week. We get into where it came from, the laws prohibiting work, and how much preparation goes into cooking several meals. Happy Thanksgiving!!The holidays can be hard, no? Just me? So we thought that you could use a bonus episode! This week we sit down with our first male interview! Nathan seemed like a great choice, as my ex husband, and because he's stuck at my house today while the turkey finishes cooking! Listen in as he talks about how I pulled him away from Judaism and off the derech. This week we're breaking down what it means to keep kosher. The point of these 'topic' episodes are twofold. On one hand, we've found that it's really great for those of us who left Ultra Orthodoxy to be able to talk out some of the bigger themes that once made up our lives. It helps us to feel connected, it helps validate experiences that sometimes felt so extreme that in retrospect we wonder if anyone else felt what we did. Also, since starting this podcast we've been amazed at the number of people who come to it without prior knowledge of Judaism. We are SO glad you're tuning in and we want to make sure that you're listening to the 'story' episodes withers much background information as we can give you! If there are any topics that you would like covered, let us know! Now, before you click download please remember that our goal isn't to teach you exactly how you'd keep kosher, or to cover all the finer points. If you're interested in learning about it further, get in touch and we'll forward you some great resources! If you're interested in bitching at us because we missed something and you think we sound irreverent... you may have sorely misunderstood the point of this podcast. This week we are thrilled to introduce you to an anonymous brave heart who asked to share her story with you. We call her Avigayil, a pseudonym, but her name isn't what's most important about the triumphant tale she tells, what matters most is her courage and perseverance to live a better life. ***Please be aware that she walks us through hard topics, and goes into some detail about sexual abuse. We urge you to skip this episode if you don't feel 100% prepared for it or if you're not in a completely healthy mental state (we've all been there. There are times when we're not in the right frame of mind to hear certain things)***If after hearing Avigayil's story you need to talk, reach out, that's why we're here.
