Raised in Stamford Hill, England, Torah study was an integral part of Ariah's early life, influenced deeply by the legacy of his pious grandfather, who met a tragic end in the Holocaust while clutching a Sefer Torah. Struggling with rejection by his Yeshiva, Ariah veered into secular life, achieving success in the US food distribution industry. Yet, his Jewish roots remained unshakeable, resonating within him and driving his search for spiritual fulfillment. It was Rabbi Yaron Reuven's lectures that catalyzed Ariah's return to Judaism. Now a fervent practitioner of Teshuva, Ariah, alongside his wife, has ignited a spiritual revival among his circle of old friends. Tune in to listen to Ariah's heartfelt narrative of re-embracing his faith and heritage.

In the strictly isolated Hasidic community of North London, thousands of boys reach the age of 16 without being able to read or speak much English. The education for boys in the community includes only minimal secular teaching at most places of learning. Many schools are unregistered, and in some cases, as a Times investigation finds, are not even supposed to exist. And - in a rare glimpse into this hidden world - we speak with the head teacher of a registered Hasidic school, who explains that any discussion around improving the institutions must start with one basic question: what do these schools do right? This podcast was brought to you thanks to the support of readers of The Times and The Sunday Times. Aside from being in awe of Rabbi Gluck's gentle soul and kind nature, we talk about his life-long dedication to his community, his outlook on the good that could come from the pandemic and his belief that we can work together to create a better future; without losing sight of our own traditions, cultures and values.Rabbi Gluck also shares how he still struggles to grasp the effect that the Holocaust had on his family, and speaks of the continuous trauma generations of Jewish communities still experience because of it.Plus, Katherine and Paul update us on the plans for Prospect Farm and get an unexpected visit from our new podcast sponsors, Hello Fresh.Promo code: JustKidding.Links, resources and episode timestamps (for all you skippers out there) below.____ABOUT RABBI HERSCHEL GLUCKRabbi Herschel Gluck OBE is a British Rabbi based in Stamford Hill in North East London. Untold Stories of Courageous Hearts

Stamford Hill is located in a small borough of London and home to the largest Hasidic Jewish Population in Europe. The roughly 68,000 people who live there make it their life's mission to raise invisible walls that shut out the world beyond the two square miles of their community. Leah was raised there, kept hidden away because she was different, then was married off quickly with the hope that she'd fall in line. But Leah was born with an inquisitiveness that couldn't be stifled by being locked away in an attic or married to a man she didn't know. She was born into a life she didn't want, and as so many women have before her, and will after, she did her best with what she had and blazed a new path for herself and her child. 54: The 100-miler – Part 1 – (1737-1875)

Ultrarunning History

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2020 33:35

By Davy Crockett  The 100-miler! Running or walking 100 miles in one-go is an amazing accomplishment. Unfortunately, some people of today still mistakenly believe that the 100-miler was invented in 1974 when a man without his horse ran 100 miles. Contrary to the cunning marketing hype that has been spread for decades, the history of the 100-miler ultra on all surfaces started long before that year. The sub-24-hour 100-miler was accomplished by hundreds of people before that famed journey in the California Sierra in 1974. In April 2020, Runner's World magazine erroneously called that run "The First 100-mile Ultra." The “mile” measurement has roots back to Roman times. The statute mile, a British incarnation in 1593, became adopted in the United Kingdom and later also by the United States. It should not be too surprising that walking and running specifically the round number of 100 miles came out of Great Britain and America. The concept of walking or running extreme distances has taken place for thousands of years in many cultures, motivated mostly to relay swift communication between settlements or armies. Historic stories have been found regarding distances that were further than 100 miles such as Pheidippides' run from Athens to Sparta in 490 B.C., a distance of about 153 miles. In more recent centuries, "running footmen" were used by aristocrats to deliver letters. In 1728 it was reported that Owen M’Mahon, an Irish running footman covered 112 mile in 21 hours running from Trllick to Dublin.  Attempts to walk 1,000 in competition started as early as 1759 in England. But what about achieving the round-number distance of 100 miles?  When did the 100-mile quest begin and how did it evolve? Earliest 100-milers The earliest 100-milers were solo attempts that were motivated by wagers and usually required the person to achieve that distance in less than 24 hours. The earliest known attempt was accomplished in 1737 by an unnamed journeyman carpenter. On the road to Newington, England, a half-mile course was marked off from “Mother-Red-Caps” toward “Stamford Hill.”  Many wagers were made. The carpenter struggled to finish in under 24 hours and missed it by just four minutes. It was reported, “However, the persons who imagined they had lost, had the ground measured again and found there were three yards extra, which in the whole, amounts to 600 yards.” The bets were refunded because the carpenter likely finished 100 miles in less than 24 hours after all. John Hague of Binns (Marsden), England, was the next 100-mile walker listed in history. For “a considerable wager,” on August 9, 1762, Hague walked 100 miles on a Manchester road in 23:15:00, proving that such a journey was possible in less than a day. Foster Powell (1734-1793) of London worked as a lawyer’s clerk. He became perhaps the earliest notable pedestrian in 1764 when he walked 50 miles in seven hours on a wager. A few years later he walked 400 miles from London to York and back in five days and 18 hours, bringing focus on the idea of a six-day contest. He made this journey on a wager many times. In 1786 he sought to walk 100 miles in less than 24 hours and succeeded in 23:45. He lowered his 100-mile time two years later with 21:20, walking on the Bath Road. He was treated like a national celebrity but died in poverty. His death announcement in 1793 included, “These extraordinary feats never produced him enough to keep him above the reach of indigence. Poverty, which he ought always to have kept a day’s march behind him, was his constant companion in his travels through life, even to the hour of his death.” Captain Robert Barclay Robert Barclay Allardice, or “Captain Barclay,” of Ury, Scotland, was born to a Scottish family in 1779. His father had been a member of Parliament and owned extensive estates. When young Barclay was fifteen years old, he won a 100 guineas wager, walking heal-toe six miles in one hour which at that time was cons...

BBC World Service: Attacks on Ultra-Orthodox Jews

In the last year, there has been a 65% increase in anti-semitic attacks against ultra-Orthodox Jews in the Stamford Hill community of north-east London, including one incident in which a gas canister was thrown out the window of a passing white van and 'Heil Hitler' was shouted repeatedly. Many of the local community, including rabbis and members of Schomrim, the community police, attribute this sharp increase to the rise of populism - namely Brexit and Trump. They fear they are starting to turn inward to protect themselves, making them more closed-off than ever. I went to meet some of them at Purim, the annual Jewish festival, to hear more. *The sound quality isn't great and some of the presenter intro and outro got cut in this edit but the sense is there!*

Leaving the Orthodox Jewish community does not just mean forgoing your faith – it also means leaving a community, a life and in many cases your family. It can be so traumatic for many people that there are groups, set up to help people to distance themselves from the faith they feel encompasses every aspect of their lives. Daniel Gordon meets Hasidic Jews at different stages of the slow process of leaving their tight-knit religious community and joining mainstream society. Daniel will meet Maya, who grew up in the tight knit Jewish suburb of Stamford Hill in north London who tells him about her life as part of the community. He also meets 25-year-old Izzy who, until a couple of years ago, could not speak English such was the introverted nature of life. Daniel is there as he opens the results of an important maths examination that is taken by 16-year-olds in the UK. Leaving the ‘derech’, or path, is not an easy decision. In doing so, ties are cut permanently with a faith and a way of life that is governed by strict laws. In understanding what it is to leave we understand more what it was to be part of it in the first place.
