In anticipation of our upcoming series, we want to share with you our episode with Shulem Deen, originally released in June 2020. In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, David discusses with special guest and former member of the Ultra-Orthodox community, Shulem Deen, the struggle and importance of balancing one's individual needs with those of the community.Though many of us are aware of the extreme disconnect that exists between the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and the secular world, the result of this unfortunate dynamic offers powerful insight. In particular, the intense and likely under-discussed experience of ex-Ultra-Orthodox community members (a group referred to by many as ‘Off The Derech' or OTD) raises important questions about the reality of this intercommunity conflict and life as a modern Jew. In what ways do the religious and secular worlds misunderstand each other? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Ultra-Orthodox and secular worlds in facilitating a positive life for their members? How can we as individuals combat the inescapable myopia of living within a social bubble? Tune in to join David and Shulem in seeking answers to these important questions.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/18forty-podcast--4344730/support.

As a young girl growing up in a strict ultra-Orthodox family, Dassi's life was preordained - marry young, live a devout life and raise children within the Adass community's religious rules. This righteous path would keep her safe from the immodest, secular world just a few blocks away in suburban Melbourne. But the Adass community was not safe for Dassi.Dassi was fifteen when her revered school principal, Malka Leifer, started to single her out. Dassi's cloistered and harsh upbringing meant she didn't have the words for what was happening to her, but she knew it was very, very wrong. It would take her years to break free of the secrecy which pervaded the community and tell the police of her betrayal. And only then would she find out others, including two of her sisters, had also been abused, and would learn some in the Adass community had helped Leifer flee to Israel. With the only world she knew crumbling around her, Dassi found the strength to fight, leading a brave fifteen-year campaign to bring Leifer back to face Australian courts. In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Dassi Erlich about the foundation and teachings of the Adass Jewish community and her terrible childhood experience, the decision she made to leave the sect and her fight to bring her sexual abuser Malka Leifer to account, and the support she received in writing a difficult memoir.

Julia Haart is a self-made businesswoman, designer, and bestselling author. She was raised in an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. At age 42 she fled, changed her name, and without any formal education or background in fashion launched her career as a designer with her namesake shoe collection. Just a few years later, she was named creative director of La Perla and would become co-owner and CEO of Elite World Group and one of the most influential people in fashion. In 2021, Julia and her NETFLIX hit series "My Unorthodox Life", which streams in over 190 countries, took the world by storm. In her memoir BRAZEN, Julia writes with radical vulnerability and honesty, sharing her deeply personal journey of heartbreak, resilience, and courage to flee a fundamentalist community. Released in April 2022, BRAZEN became an instant bestseller in the U.S. and U.K. Above all else, Julia applies her experience and platform to be a force for positive change in the world and supporting women who have dedicated their lives to building a better future.  With the right for women to choose under threat, Julia has taken a leading role in the pro-choice movement marching in support of women's rights, rallying her community of influential friends and followers, supporting organizations such as #VoteProChoice and Plan C, and serving on the Advisory Council of the Equal Rights Amendment Coalition. With so much at stake at home in the U.S., Julia has also worked tirelessly to campaign for pro-choice politicians and support organizations such as Emerge America to help recruit and train like-minded women to run for office. As a champion of democracy globally, Julia fights for the right to freedom around the world including Iran and Ukraine where she led a mission to deliver ambulances and critical humanitarian supplies.

How does Ultra-Orthodox Jewish literature describe the male body? What does the body represent? What is the ideal male body? In The Male Body in Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Theology, published in 2021 by Pickwick Publications, Yakir Englander presents a philosophical-theological exploration of the different images of the male body in Ultra-Orthodox literature since the holocaust. The body is not incidental to this community but is the axis by which it tries to understand its meaning and its role in life. In the first part of the book, Englander explains the “problem of the body” and the different ways that Ultra-Orthodox theology deals with it. These different and even contradictory voices can teach the reader about the shifting of ideas inside Ultra-Orthodox thought in the last decades. The second part of the book focuses on the image of the ideal body and describes how the rabbis train their bodies to reach ultimate form. Yakir Englander is a scholar and an activist who teaches at the Academy for Jewish Religion and is also a host on the New Books Network. Schneur Zalman Newfield is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York, and the author of Degrees of Separation: Identity Formation While Leaving Ultra-Orthodox Judaism (Temple University Press, 2020).  Learn more about your ad choices. For Abby Stein, home was the insulated Hasidic neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She came from a lineage of prominent religious figures, and grew up speaking mostly Yiddish, avoiding any and all pop culture, and believing that most of the world was Ultra-Orthodox Jewish. Eventually, she was ordained as a Rabbi and started a family. The only problem? Everyone thought she was a man. In this episode, we'll hear about Abby's experiences as an author, model, speaker, rabbi, and the first openly transgender woman raised in a Hasidic community. She'll tell us how she left her home and her family and learned to live a vastly different life only a short subway ride away. We'll explore how Abby is pursuing change in her community from the outside. Our second podcast is with Dr. Haim Abraham, a lecturer at the University of Essex. He gives us an informative discussion on surrogacy in relation to the LGBTQ+ community in Israel, educating us on the developments being made and the ones needed to ensure they have equal rights to surrogacy. As the LGBTQ+ community in Israel grows so does their advocation of equal rights. Within Israel, the Embryo Carrying Agreement Act is how surrogacy is regulated. However, its requirements discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community, such as only allowing surrogacy to be available for married heterosexual couples. In recent years, there have been achievements; the courts acknowledging LGBTQ+ relationships and recognizing that the law is discriminatory towards same-sex couples as seen in 2010 case of Arad-Pinkas (HCJ 1078/10 Arad-Pinkas v The Surrogacy Agreements Approval Committee) which led to a petition for law reform. Nonetheless, the courts argued that the law was proportionate due to the lack of research on its effect on familial structure regardless of the acceptance of surrogacy undertaken abroad. This led to the financial burden on Israel's LGBTQ+ couples to undertake surrogacy abroad which costs more than $100,000 and thus discriminates against the LGBTQ+ community. Ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties in the Knesset continue to advocate for a fully religious vision of Israel. These religious considerations caused a lack of political support for the LGBTQ+ movement and led to LGBTQ+ rights not seen as legitimate rights as they go against religious belief. This is evident under the Embryo Carrying Agreement Act which is how surrogacy is regulated in Israel. The Act includes legal requirements that discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community and shows the importance of religious attitudes, where particular attention was given to Jewish law. This can be seen in the requirements stated for surrogacy, in particular that the procedure is available for only married heterosexual couples as well as the requirement for the intended parents and surrogate to follow the same religion. Additionally, homophobic attitudes are still present with the communities. Regardless of the enormous pressure for change since 2010, the lack of action shown by the government reveals the long road ahead for the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ Organisations in Israel - Tehila - The Aguda (The Association for LGBTQ Equality in Israel) - Iggy The Proud Youth Organisation (Israel's national LGBTQ youth organization) - Bat-Kol(the only NGO of LGBTQ women in Israel) Extra Resources - Dr Haim's research paper on surrogacy in Israel can be found here - Surrogacy in Israel Conference If you wish to be involved in a future season of the LGBTQ+ Pride and the Law: A Podcast, please contact elawclinic@essex.ac.uk for more information!

NSW will reopen to the vaccinated only as part of their "New World Order" plan. Countdown starts to implement "knife control" as the NZ Govt moves to legislate new anti-terror laws on the eve of the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Tim and Dieuwe discuss on Trad Tasman Talk. The NSW Government announced their roadmap to freedom for the vaccinated only, the lockdown will only end for double vaccinated residents when the state hits 70% double vaccinated. Premier Gladys Berejiklian stated she did not want to be around the unvaccinated, her Chief Health Officer Dr. Kerry Chant stated they were looking at what contact tracing looks like in the New World Order. Last year NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said New World Order twice. Businesses desperate for the government to allow them to reopen have released pro-vaccination ads. Victoria Bitter tweaked their famous "I've got it now' ad. This was released when residents of locked-down apartment towers in Sydney are having their excess alcohol confiscated by NSW Health. A federal court challenge to the closure of houses of worship during lockdowns was rejected. Victoria Police have shut down and fined members of Melbourne's Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community who gathered at a local synagogue to mark Rosh Hashanah. In NZ Jacinda Ardern is still pursuing Covid Zero, as such Auckland remains in alert level 4 lockdown with daily local cases still being reported. One of NZ's biggest pro-lockdown personalities has been exposed as a rank hypocrite Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Siouxsie Wiles who was filmed frolicking at the beach with Auckland University Associate Professor Dr. Nicola Gaston. Mask enforcement is being stepped up with even those with legitimate exemptions being denied access to supermarkets because of the circulation of counterfeit mask exemptions. A week after the Countdown Supermarket stabbing terror attack the ISIS-inspired terrorist who was shot dead by police after has been named: 32-year-old Sri Lankan national Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen. It has also come to light that NZ authorities could have done much more to revoke the terrorist's residency and deport him, despite this the government believes passing new anti-terror laws is the answer. Countdown supermarkets whose stores have now experienced two mass stabbings have taken their knives and scissors off their shelves. Ivermectin an anti-parasitic drug has been promoted by some as a treatment for covid-19. However, due to purported overdose in a covid positive case in NSW Australia's TGA announced they were restricting doctors prescribing of Ivermectin to patients. The US mainstream media fell for a fake story that claimed Oklahoma hospitals were overwhelmed due to ivermectin overdoses. Joe Rogan has claimed ivermectin treated his covid illness. Tomorrow is 20 years since the 9/11 US terrorist attacks, the War on Terror gave birth to an expanded national security and surveillance state which we are still living under. The War on Terror has not made the world more free or safe with the Taliban returning to power in Afghanistan. Cricket Australia canceled an upcoming men's test match against Afghanistan to be held in Hobart because the Taliban won't allow women to play cricket. Though many of us are aware of the extreme disconnect that exists between the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and the secular world, the result of this unfortunate dynamic offers powerful insight. In particular, the intense and likely under-discussed experience of ex-Ultra-Orthodox community members (a group referred to by many as ‘Off The Derech’ or OTD) raises important questions about the reality of this intercommunity conflict and life as a modern Jew. In what ways do the religious and secular worlds misunderstand each other? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Ultra-Orthodox and secular worlds in facilitating a positive life for their members? How can we as individuals combat the inescapable myopia of living within a social bubble? Tune in to join David and Shulem in seeking answers to these important questions.
