oin us for an eye-opening conversation with Nir Maman, a legendary Israeli Special Forces operator, as he shares his firsthand experiences from the recent conflict in Gaza and Hebron. Dive deep into the realities of urban warfare, counter-terror operations, and the personal stories of those fighting to defend Israel. Nir Maman is a former Section Commander, Lead Counter Terror and Krav Maga Instructor, and Operational Team Leader on the Israeli Special Forces Counter Terror Unit and Counter Terror School. Nir's professional background spans over twenty years and includes service in Israel, Canada, and the United States in the fields of Military special operations, Police tactical operations, Law Enforcement, High-risk security, and Close Protection. CT 707 is backed by an advisory board of highly experienced experts in the fields of Military special operations, Police tactical operations, Use of Force instruction, Law, Medicine, and Psychology. This interview was conducted just as Nir came out of his second tour of Iron Swords from the Gaza Strip operations where he and his team hunted down Hamas terrorists for two weeks straight in the Khan Yunis region. Over 60 terrorists were eliminated from his platoon alone of the over 300 in that operation.
Danny Netzer is the head Krav Maga instructor for the Israeli Defense Force. His responsibilities include putting together the training programs and overseeing the syllabus that's delivered to every single soldier in the IDF. He heads the Krav Maga instructors school that trains the instructors themselves that teach Krav Maga throughout the Israeli army. And he debriefs and studies all instances in which Krav Maga is used by soldiers in real life to protect themselves and to survive real violence. Danny also happens to be a good friend of mine and a long-time training partner. I originally met Danny back in 2001 when we were both young soldiers. This one has been one of the best podcasts in my opinion so far, and also maybe one of the most challenging ones. Danny and I certainly don't see eye to eye on everything. But I believe that's part of what makes it so interesting. So enjoy!
On today's show, I talk to someone who has been called the “Toughest Woman Alive”. Get this, as a teenager, she got obsessed with kickboxing and became a world champion. Leah then spent 9 years in the Israeli commandos and secret police - becoming a Krav Maga Instructor for their Elite Commandos. And then upon retiring, she got into cycling… and in 2005 after winning 9 of her first 11 races, she was involved in a horrific crash that left her hospitalized for two and a half months and she was told she would never walk without a cane… let alone get back on a bike… But if that wasn't enough, Leah recovered and started competing in the Race Across America (RAAM)... eventually winning the race having ridden 3000 miles, climbed 175,000 feet, crossed 12 states with a time of 11 days, three hours and three minutes… Now, if that's not someone who can teach us a never-give-up attitude, I don't know who can. Excerpt: [on sharing what one of his colleagues told him] "Self Defense deals with the onset of Violence, the beginning of the violent moment. Basically the engagement, the first punch thrown etc... If you are amazing at self-defense maybe you did your 360, maybe you nailed them with a punch, situation over. But, more often than not, that self-defense moment turns into a fight. So he defines self-defense and fighting as self-defense the kind of before to the beginning and fighting as the during and maybe a little bit after." -Saar Markovitch Saar Markovitch is the Co-Owner and Head instructor of X-Fighting is Sydney, Australia. From the outside looking in, Jay had the golden ticket. All he had to do was follow the plan. However, Jay knew deep down instead this wasn't the life he wanted and he had to make the difficult decision to either live a life that was expected of him or ultimately live his life the way he wants. In this episode, we discuss:- Learning how to fight out of necessity - Having an abusive father who was an ex-marine in South Korea (getting drop kicked, father using weapons against him)- Having an abusive father who was an ex-marine in South Korea- Being in a family with over 35 physicians who expected him to follow in their footstep- Becoming the first Krav Maga certified Korean American - Family cutting him off after he made the decision not to pursue a career in the medical career- Having a chip on his shoulders - His thoughts on Asian Hate as someone who teaches self-defense for a living - Men should be able to protect their families - Sharing his best piece of advice - Where he envisions himself in the next five years. Exerpt: "Krav Maga builds out of two subjects. Self Defense which is the main subject. And hand-to-hand combat, with time Krav Maga became very very good at the self-defense... but it became, maybe the hand-to-hand combat section was a little bit neglected. But we know self-defense very good." -Ron Rotem Ron is referring Boxing, Kickboxing, wrestling, Judo, MMA with regards to hand-to-hand combat, Or as UTKM would consider the skills needed for a back and forth fight. Ron Rotem is a Top Israeli Krav Maga Instructor and Black Belt who has taught in all aspects of Israeli Life from the IDF, Prison System, and Civilians. His start in Krav Maga was very much like something out of a Hong Kong Fight movie where a would-be street fight ended up in a pursuit where Ron found himself in the others Krav Maga Gym. The then Instructor told them to put gloves on and fight. Though it did not happen Ron found him staying and ended up moving up the ranks eventually becoming an assistant instructor under Eli Avikzar one of Imi's top students. This led him to be a Black Belt prior to his IDF Service where he served in an Anti-Guerilla Unit. There he was introduced to Military style Krav Maga which was quite different than his Civilian Experience. From there he became the head of the training for the Israeli Prison System which was also quite different. These differences lead Ron to begin researching the history of Krav Maga and which is now his lifelong passion. Ron is the Admin of the Facebook group Krav Maga History and culture which has well over 10,000 members. In this podcast, we discuss the history of Krav Maga, Krav Maga Principles, Concepts, and approaches as well as our own teaching Philosophies. Ron now runs his own school Israeli Krav Maga Institute. In this podcast, he interviews Bay Area Martial Arts practitioners who are leaders in business and/or Martial Arts. The podcast provides an opportunity to share the strong culture and history of martial arts in the Bay Area. Ultimately, the goal is to provide distilled understandings of how training in martial arts has impacted personal and professional lives. Description: Welcome to the Bay Area Martial Arts Podcast! In this first episode, Wade interviews Ben Kovacs of Guardian Gym located in Oakland, California. Ben Kovacs started out small; He began with an interest in sports from playing basketball his whole life but following College, he began to crave a more standardized workout. Initially, he looked into boxing but quickly ended up stumbling into the world of Martial Arts and Jiu Jitsu. Since then, he has practiced Jiu Jitsu for the past 11 years. While working full-time at Twitter he became inspired to start up Guardian: A nonprofit gym that provides at-risk youth with free Jiu Jitsu training. He believes that everyone needs a positive outlet and community and that's exactly what Guardian provides. As Ben describes in this episode, it's more than just offering a free education; It's about providing an all-around healthy outlet that allows children to express themselves in a safe space, which, in turn, helps them through all aspects of their life. Wade and Ben discuss how Guardian went from a dream to reality and the difficulties of starting any kind of gym. As Ben says, you need all the pieces of the puzzle to run a successful business. When you function as a group, the business can sustain itself without any one person. Ben provides insight on his partnerships and how Guardian came to be the now very successful business that it is. With 10 instructors teaching boxing and Jiu Jitsu they are providing classes to 160 paying adult members and over 150 children aged 10-18 for free, Guardian Gym is really giving back to the community. For more information about the course click here. Each video shows a certain defense or attack accompanied by a clear explanation. Then the move is shown in slow motion so that you are able to observe each detail.
