It falls on the 10th day of the Jewish month of Tishrei, exactly 10 days after the celebration of Rosh Hashanah. That means Yom Kippur is the climactic day of atonement following a long reflective period. This year, on the Gregorian calendar, Yom Kippur starts at sundown on October 11th and ends at sundown on October 12th.Support the show

About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.

Rundown -    Intro - 00:35   John Jackson - 35:55   Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:48:49   "New Last Chance" by Dave Gunders - 02:10:33   Outro - 02:15:37   This is a Jewish High Holidays freedom-loving special with the show's Ukraine correspondent, John Jackson. Jackson is back in Ukraine after returning to Colorado to repair his wounds. Follow John Jackson on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/@JJUkraine   The show begins with the host ripping deteriorating, sociopathic Trump for calling Kamala mentally impaired from birth, and everybody can see she's missing something. Trump is projecting and confessing. Jack Smith has an air-tight January 6 case, so Trump is threatening violence. John Jackson despises and fights fascism. He loves freedom. https://x.com/hissgoescobra   Still, the MAGA broadcast and social media sycophants stay on board with Trump despite his non-stop lying and dark threats. The mainstreaming of MAGA via Caplis Law and DA George Brauchler gets reviewed.    Tina Peters was the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder. She took part in Trump's Big Lie. Mesa County District Court Judge Matthew Barrett sentenced Peters to nine years, and we have heard the sound. Now, Judge Barrett is receiving threats. https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/colorado-judge-sentenced-election-denier-tina-peters-prison-114519167   Another election denier with power is Republican VP nominee J.D. Vance. John Jackson lets loose on the shady senator from Ohio who has decided to defame and destroy Ukraine as if an agent of Putin. Vance would surrender Kyiv and Kherson, two Ukrainian cities under attack.   Dots get connected to Trump, who will sell out Ukraine if elected, as he's done before. Consider the mobster strong arm Trump keeps putting on the heroic Volordomor Zelenskyy, the brave Jewish president of Ukraine. https://x.com/irgarner/status/1839688519955935400   Mark Cuban's strong guesting on white-boy podcasts gets played and reviewed. Cuban punches up at Musk and Trump, two rich guys he knows fairly well. The Mark Cuban family will also be celebrating Rosh Hashanah as proud Jews.   Israel is at war on many fronts. Jackson expertly reviews Israel's decisive military moves of late. What should the Jewish State do next to respond to Tuesday's barrage of missiles aimed by Iran at Tel Aviv? Jackson and the host are aggressive against Tehran and taking out nukes.   The dots are connected between the wars faced by Israel and Ukraine. Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran all take marching orders from Russian President Vlad Putin. The Russian leader's despicable bunker mentality gets analyzed, and we discuss his associations with Donald Trump and Elon Musk.   Troubadour Dave Gunders is getting much better following full right knee replacement surgery. His “New Last Chance” song is perfect for the Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Concerts by Garth Brooks and the Eagles in Vegas get reviewed. The boys have an awesome discussion of current events.

Ahead of the Jewish High Holidays, we're talking with two cookbook authors about how Jewish food around the world has evolved, and where it's going next. For decades, Jewish home cooks have turned to Joan Nathan for a taste of the familiar, and for a window into what Jews in other parts of the world eat. Dan talks with Joan about why her first cookbook was initially rejected by 16 publishers, and the Arab chicken dish she ate in Israel that changed her life. Then, Dan talks with Jeremy Salamon, part of a new guard of Jewish chefs pushing the cuisine forward. His Hungarian-Jewish restaurant in Brooklyn, Agi's Counter, has received national acclaim, but he's also heard from some unhappy Hungarians who came in looking for an old world approach. He tells Dan about his first restaurant job when he was 11, and why his grandmother is his best publicist. Joan Nathan's new book is My Life In Recipes: Family, Food, And Memories. Her upcoming book, A Sweet Year: Jewish Celebrations and Festive Recipes for Kids and Their Families, is available for pre-order. Jeremy Salamon's book is Second Generation: Hungarian and Jewish Classics Reimagined for the Modern Table. We are giving away a copy of My Life in Recipes and Second Generation! "How do we center the voices that traditionally and historically we know existed, but were only marginalized in the tradition? And that does feel like holy work. And for me, in part, when I encountered a tradition that was so driven by male stories and male voices, I felt so alienated by it when I first began to encounter it. And I had this moment, which I think lots of women faith leaders have, which is maybe this just isn't for me. I mean, I'm not intended to ever even read these texts, let alone teach these texts. And then I had an awakening where I realized, not only is it meant for me, but I have an obligation. It was waiting for me. It's waiting for me and for so many more people because there's a void until our voices enter this space." So says Rabbi Sharon Brous, a wise and wonderful friend, and the founder and senior rabbi of IKAR, a Jewish community founded to attend to critical questions. As Rabbi Brous writes in her beautiful new book The Amen Effect: Ancient Wisdom to Mend Our Broken Hearts and World , “How can our Jewish tradition help us live lives of meaning and purpose? And: Given our faith and history, who are we called to be in this time of moral crisis? We launched IKAR—our best attempt to address those questions—on a hope and a prayer, with no funding, no space, and no business plan. What we had was a shared conviction that faith communities needed to be spiritually alive and morally courageous at the same time.”  I read Sharon's beautiful book last summer, and could not wait to talk to her about it. So we recorded our conversation early, before the Jewish High Holidays, at the beginning of August, months before October 7th. Rabbi Brous's work in general is highly prophetic and brave—she has been a fierce and vocal critic of the increasingly right wing Israeli government, even as many Rabbis try to steer clear of politics. This conversation, which is not about Israel, is also highly prophetic and brave: It's about the dire need for interfaith conversation, for chipping away at the calcified belief structures of religions that don't fully serve our broken world, and for being with each other, particularly on our most painful days. This, in fact, is the theme of The Amen Effect, which is about an ancient mishnah, or overlooked piece of Jewish law that instructs us on the sacred act of circling—and tending, face-to-face, to each other's agony and grief. In today's conversation Sharon and I also talk about social justice and responsibility, a conversation that I'm hoping to pick back up with her in the new year, as so many of us feel a little lost and confused. While Rabbi Brous and I thought about doing a second episode as a fast follow, we decided to wait a beat—if you want to hear her talk about Israel and Gaza, I highly recommend you listen to her conversation with Ezra Klein, where the two talk about how some of Israel's actions are indefensible even as Israel itself must be defended. Her sermons are also stunning, and available on the IKAR website.  I think Rabbi Brous is incredible, and I'm not alone. She offered the blessing at both Biden and Obama's inaugurations, and led Hannukah at the White House this year. She manages to teach and model what so many of us need to learn how to do: We must learn how to hold each other close even through disagreement, disappointment, and despair. The Amen Effect offers some ideas for how this work might begin. Reflecting on a recent journey from Jerusalem to Ramat Gan, a divine encounter with a shopkeeper not only demonstrated the power of prayer, but also reminds us that the Almighty is always listening. This heartwarming tale forms the foundation of today's conversation, reaffirming the belief that no prayer goes unnoticed. As the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur loom, we contemplate the power of repentance and God's divine love. We discuss a beautiful analogy, comparing God's forgiveness to a father welcoming home his prodigal son. Like a loving parent, God waits with open arms, ready to embrace us as we turn back to Him, illustrating His readiness to forgive if we sincerely repent. Lastly, we move into an enlightening exploration of Teshuvah and the transformative power of prayer. We share how, regardless of our past missteps, these elements offer us redemption and a fresh perspective on life. Serenity descended on the farm this weekend. Partly from the stillness of the air after high winds brought in a cool front. Possibly because Saturday's very dry air subdued the cacophonous insect chorus of high summer into just a single, high-pitched tone from just one species — the last to complete its mating process, I imagine. The concluding note of summer's symphony. Or perhaps it was just the aftermath of a lively night with good friends — lubricated by what some might view as an excessive four bottles of wine — that kicked the weekend off. Eric decided to mark the change in season by making a “bouilli,” a traditional Québecois pot au feu of beef and salt pork slow cooked with savory spices for four hours, with end-of-summer vegetables — rutabaga, green and yellow string beans, cabbages, potato — added about halfway through the process. I fetched a large chuck roast, the traditional cut used for bouilli, from Hover Farm, whose herds graze our land, as the central ingredient. Because it was far too much meat for just me, Eric and our visiting friend Paul, we decided to make a party of it. From the north came Tom, from the east, George, and from the big city to the south, Steve. Aside from Eric, none of us had ever tasted a bouilli. As was true with Eric's other Québecois dishes, the end flavor was far more sophisticated and delicious than I might have expected from reading the unprepossessing ingredient list. The magical blending of flavors comes from the care taken in preparation. Preceded by an extended cocktail hour, accompanied by generous pourings of hearty red wine, which continued to flow as we devoured the apple cake Paul had whipped up that afternoon, dinner was a smashing success. One to be remembered, not just for the beautifully prepared food, but also for the unquestionable sense of well-being and boisterous camaraderie excited by our being together. Joyous — but exhausting. The two often overlap. I won't go so far as to say I was hung over on Saturday, but let's just say that at my age after such a roaring start to a weekend, nothing seemed more welcome than a contemplative tail. Luckily, Saturday itself came through with its still quiet. And what better way to appreciate it than a walk with man's best friend? Lillie, Eric's aged Carolina dog, proceeds at what can only be described as a slow and deliberate pace, which makes her the ideal guide for a meditative, restorative stroll, and Tom and I decided to accompany her. It was a short walk, limited by Lillie's lack of enthusiasm for long treks. We made our way just along the farm's eastern border on Old Saw Mill Road and past the two farms to our north. By the time we turned around and started back, we felt fully enveloped in the quiet: the constant hum of that one last vibrating insect species in the afterglow of its own mating season, nary a car passing. Just the barely discernible patter of Lillie slowly trotting her old arthritic bones behind us. The sense of stasis came from what we saw as much as what we heard. The spectacular view of the Catskills looming in the distance, as they have over the Hudson Valley unchanged for centuries. The well-kept farmhouses we passed that should have been full of life but are now only sporadically used, lamentably deprived of their active farmers by illness and death in recent years. The pastures, though green from our recent rains, were also static in their way, no longer burgeoning with the rapid growth of spring and summer. It all might have seemed melancholic, but such quietude this time of year evokes for me happy memories of how, in my childhood, the world seemed to enter a state of suspension as the Jewish High Holidays approached. For us, all normal activity was suspended — schools closed and work was forbidden. Of course, there was a large festive meal for Rosh Hashanah, and if the salt pork were removed, Eric's bouilli might serve beautifully. But the overall tone of the Jewish New Year was always one of quiet contemplation, exemplified by the ritual of Tashlich when we cast our sins away by throwing bread on the water. How appropriate to have been enveloped in this atmosphere on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. To all of you observing the holiday, may I wish a sweet New Year. L'shana Tova. The Twelfth Month: Elul It's Elul! Time keeps doing that thing where it passes!!! On one hand - wow how lucky are we to have reached this point? And on the other hand - we continue our hurtle toward the great unknown. *shrugs* The month of Elul, as the final month of the Jewish year, is a time for introspection and spiritual work / reflection on the time that has passed since the LAST Elul. It is taught that this month is a time where our words and petitions to G-d are more potent. Also it's my birthday month! There's a Hasidic idea that in the month of Elul is when "the King is the field." The concept is that a King is returning from a trip and on his way back into the kingdom, he is passing through the fields of his subjects. Once the king reaches the castle though, it will be difficult to get in front of him again. This time of the king being reachable and close by is extremely important to take advantage of - and we look at our closeness to G-d in this month in the same way. I started this whole podcast really because of Elul. For the past 3 years, I've done a Cheshbon HaNefesh, or an Accounting of the Soul - essentially reflecting on the past year in a concrete way - making lists, assessing yourself honestly, etc. What you liked/disliked, how you want to improve, what you are proud of. Summarizing the past year and taking from this summary key points. AKA - what I'm trying to do right now, in closing out this year-long Rosh Chodesh journey. If you've been with me from the start, you'll know that another reason I began this podcast / essay series was because I was stressed out about the finality and the seriousness of the Jewish High Holidays. _____________ Cont'd… For full text, email me at shirajkaplan@gmail.com or join my email list here. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/iggerethalevana/message

This is the final episode of a three-part series asking three distinguished Rabbis of Los Angeles, California, to answer the same question - What is a Jew? According to Rabbi Missaghieh, showing three very different opinions on the same subject, each with valid points, is the essence of answering the question of what it means to be a Jew. The question is more important than the answer. The Jew, in this Rabbi's answer, is someone living with ambiguity. The search itself for answers is the cornerstone of the identity. Rabbi Missaghieh is an innovative clergy person, enriching her congregation at Temple Israel of Hollywood with creative programming. She has created Women's Retreats and a series called TIOH Speaks - where she interviews Temple members on a variety of different topics. In addition, she has trained over 50 men and women to be part of the Temple's Chevrah Kadisha, a group that prepares deceased for burial according to traditional practices. For the annual Jewish High Holidays, she conducts services that are participatory and standing room only. Listen to this third Rabbinic answer that ends the series and ponder the complex question - What is a Jew?

Getting Back to our roots...and living up to our name! This applies to the present time in the Jewish calendar, with the new year fast approaching. The Jewish High Holidays summon us to the process of "teshuva," or "return," to return to our own personal roots, the deepest spiritual essence and mission that each one of us has. Rosh Hashanah itself is the anniversary of the creation of "Adam," mankind, and that very name (Adam) summons us--his descendants--to keep the "aleph" (which, in one understanding, represents our soul, the "portion" of G-d in each one of us) in front of, and always leading, our "dam" (which means, "blood," and signifies our physicality). AND this podcast should live up to ITS name, Rabbi E in...3! NO? Or at least we should honestly discuss the matter. So join me in this episode, which truly IS Rabbi E in 3 (minutes rounded down!)

Demonstrators took the streets of London, Tel Aviv and other cities on Saturday to protest coronavirus restrictions, decrying how the measures have affected daily life even with infection rates rising in many places and the global death toll approaching 1 million. In the U.K., the latest official estimates released Friday showed that new infections and coronavirus hospital admissions have been doubling every seven to eight days. Britain has Europe's highest death toll since the start of the pandemic, with 41,821 confirmed virus-related deaths. The government recently banned social gatherings of more than six people in the hopes that it would help reverse a steep rise in COVID-19 cases and suggested that tougher restrictions could be coming.Saturday's protest in Trafalgar Square, which was themed "Resist and Act for Freedom," ended in clashes between demonstrators and London police, as officers tried to disperse hundreds of people holding banners and placards scrawled with anti-restriction messages such as "This is now Tyranny."London Mayor Sadiq Khan has warned that the city may add curfews, force pubs to close earlier and ban household visits to try to limit the city's sharp rise in new cases."I am extremely concerned by the latest evidence I've seen today from public health experts about the accelerating speed at which COVID-19 is now spreading here in London," Khan said Friday. "It is increasingly likely that, in London, additional measures will soon be required to slow the spread of the virus."In Israel, meanwhile, authorities ordered a full lockdown that began Friday and coincided with the Jewish High Holidays, which are typically celebrated with family gatherings and large prayer services.Demonstrators in swimsuits gathered on a beach in Tel Aviv and waved black and pink flags connoting various protest movements. In Australia, about 100 protesters gathered in the Melbourne beachside suburb of Elwood on Saturday before being scattered by police.Police in the region have tried to dissuade lockdown opponents from protesting, but the rallies have become routine. The Victoria police said in a news release that "the behaviour of these selfish few who choose to blatantly ignore the directions will not be tolerated."In Romania's capital city, Bucharest, several hundred people protested against virus restrictions, including the mandatory use of masks in schools. About 2.8 million children in Romania began the school year Monday and schools took various precautions to try and prevent outbreaks.Romania is among the countries that has had a new spike in confirmed cases, including a national daily record of 1,713 cases earlier in the week and 1,333 more on Saturday. In all, Romania has had 111,550 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 4,402 deaths from the disease since the start of the pandemic.Protesters in Bucharest's University Square drew parallels between the protective measures against the pandemic and Nazi regimes. One of the speakers compared the measures to the torture of dissidents during communism. The virulent language and comparisons echoed that of conservative protesters at rallies in dozens of U.S. cities earlier in the pandemic, including some who successfully pressured governors and local officials into lifting restrictions on businesses and social activities.Experts have said some state authorities gave up on the restrictions too quickly, allowing the virus to continue spreading this summer in parts of the country that didn't experience the full force of the pandemic early in the year.As of Saturday, Johns Hopkins University reported nearly 200,000 deaths in the U.S. since the start of the pandemic and 6.7 million confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S.

“If you preserve the food, you preserve who your family is.” This poignant quote by Joan Nathan, an award winning author of eleven cookbooks including her latest King Solomon's Table: A Culinary Exploration of Jewish Cooking from  Around the World, truly captures the essence of why recipes matter. It was an honor to meet Joan Nathan at Les Dames d'Escoffier conference in Washington, D.C. and discuss the importance of preserving foodways. Not until Nathan was married did she fully appreciate the influence Jewish foodways had on her family. Her mother-in-law was a Holocaust survivor from Poland who remembered all the food and recipes from this country in such a beautiful way.  “It made me realize that I wanted to preserve them,” Nathan explains. After meeting a Yiddish folklore professor who also wanted to share his recipes and stories, Nathan embarked on her own ethnic foodways journey to discover  and preserve beloved Jewish recipes. Joan Nathan shares her firsthand  experience of the power of how food brings people to the table and breaks down barriers.  While working for Teddy Kollek, the former mayor of Jerusalem, they visited an Arab village for a meeting, and everyone connected over Joan's favorite chicken dish called  Musakhan (Palestinian Sumac chicken with sautéed onions). Whole Foods is teaming with Joan Nathan to offer prepared dishes and recipes for customers during the Jewish High Holidays.  The five recipes all featured in her latest cookbook Solomon's Table: Culinary Exploration of Jewish Cooking form Around the World include: Cod with Tomatoes, Plumbs, Apples, Onions and Pine Nuts; Slightly Sweet and Sour Cabbage; Seven Sacred Species Salad with Wheat Berries, Barley, Olives, Figs, Dates, Grapes and Pomegranate; Sweet and Crunchy Noodle Kugel; and Tahina Cookies.

Music has been a part of Jewish life since ancient Biblical times, and remains integral to the Jewish religious and cultural experiences. Hazzan Pomerantz-Boro tells us about the Jewish High Holidays (personal preparation is taking place now) and the role Jewish music plays in Jewish culture and holidays/celebrations. Some of America’s greatest composers and songwriters are Jewish (including Aaron Copeland, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Leonard Cohen [Canadian-American], Carole King, and Bob Dylan), and we discuss the effect of their heritage on their music. In this episode, rabbi-in-training Lisa Rappaport and I talk about spiritual seeking and exploration. Lisa wasn't raised in a religious or spiritual household, and though her more distant relatives were Catholic and Protestant, she just didn't connect to Christianity. After much exploration of different religious and spiritual traditions in her early adult life, she eventually found her spiritual home in Judaism and is now on the rabbinic path. Lisa is the creator of the blog My Jewish Path, which follows the 29 day journey of spiritual preparation for the Jewish High Holidays during the Hebrew month of Elul. In this episode, we talk about the state of our democracy, our world, the challenges our communities are facing from inside and out, and what we as individuals feeling lost in the middle of it all… can do about it. We also talk about how the lessons and traditions from the Jewish High Holidays (and really, most religious traditions) can help us find peace, community, forgiveness, our way back to those we’ve alienated and a calling to be our best selves. We talk about how even with the best intentions, we can often “miss our mark” - as individuals and as a community - and how that’s okay. We talk about how putting each other through ideological perfection tests is always a losing battle, as everyone of us, at some point, will fail. We also talk about how as bad as things might feel right now, and as much as it might look on cable news like our movements might be starting to fracture from within… things might not actually be as bad as they seem – and it might actually be nothing new. We also touch briefly on Nike’s “Believe in Something…” campaign with Colin Kaepernick and how its core message reflects something Movement Builders have been saying and doing for a long time. Join us for a special “thinking out loud” edition of the Beth Zemsky Podcast and let us know how your faith tradition or values frame drives your work and helps you find focus, accountability, forgiveness, a calling to be your best self, and guides you back to others when you fall.
