Description:For 15 years, Tim Schraeder Rodriguez quietly shaped the digital face of some of the biggest names in evangelical Christianity — Willow Creek, Hillsong, Elevation — helping mega-churches reach millions with a message of radical welcome. The painful irony? He was living proof of their unspoken rules. Useful in the shadows. Unacceptable in the light. In this conversation, Tim joins Jen and Amy to talk about his new memoir, Conversion Therapy Dropout, and the full arc of his story: growing up adopted with a sense of "anxious apartness," signing the purity pledge as a kid who already knew he was gay, eight years in the loosely-held and deeply damaging world of conversion therapy, and eventually a breaking point that brought him to his knees — and then, slowly, to himself.Today, the conversation swirls around what conversion therapy actually looks like from the inside (football coaches, Mary Kay consultants, and all), the complicated grief of leaving a community that was also your career and your family, how the Pulse Orlando shooting became Tim's personal line in the sand, and what it took to find his way back to faith — this time, in church basements with other sober queer people finding a God of their own understanding. They also get into the current state of conversion therapy in America, why it's more active and accessible than most people realize, and what the rest of us — regular people who just live on their street and go to their jobs — can actually do about it.This one is hard and beautiful and hopeful. Don't miss it.Thought-provoking Quotes:★ "I was living proof of their unspoken rules. I was useful in the shadows, but unacceptable in the light." – Tim Schraeder Rodriguez★ "It really kind of disintegrates you in body, mind and spirit because you're acting and being something and someone that you're not." – Tim Schraeder Rodriguez★ "Freedom wasn't finally becoming who they said I was supposed to be, but finally embracing who I believe God created me to be." – Tim Schraeder Rodriguez★ "More transformation was happening in church basements than was ever happening upstairs." – Tim Schraeder Rodriguez★ "I finally feel like I'm living from a place of honesty and truth. I sense and feel God's presence with me today now more as an openly gay man than I ever did in the years I was in conversion therapy." – Tim Schraeder Rodriguez Resources Mentioned in This Episode:➢ Dissenting Harmony - Amy's Rage Choir - https://dissentingharmony.betterworld.org/➢ Conversion Therapy Dropout: A Queer Story of Faith and Belonging by Timothy Schraeder Rodriguez - https://amzn.to/48smCCv➢ Conversion Therapy Dropout audiobook - https://amzn.to/3OZULmD➢ Exodus International - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exodus_International➢ The Trevor Project — thetrevorproject.org➢ ...
Send us Fan MailI've recently been consuming episodes of the popular TV show "Heated Rivalry" which has taken the world by storm. I've watched and re-watched all six episodes, listened to podcasts about the show and I've consumed many, many podcasts where people have reviewed the show, commented (and cried and cheered) in real time. The tenderness, realness and flat-out courage of the characters portrayed in these gay love stories has opened the floodgates of my tears many times.Years ago, when I lived in Seattle, I told myself that someday I wanted to be "fully me" and to not be compartmentalized with different people regarding who I am and my current truth. I came out as gay in late 1999. Because of my former background in the Christian church, I found myself in the position of not being my true self in multiple scenarios in my life- notably in my relationships in my family and with folks who knew me in my "former church life". Many of these people thought they knew me and what I believed in leaving the church- even though the majority of what they came up with was far, far from my truth. They choose to live in their own worlds and belief systems, extrapolating their own beliefs and their own truth onto me and my experience.I've been thinking about doing a podcast like this for quite awhile now. Watching "Heated Rivalry" and observing the various fictional characters grow and evolve has given me the extra push I needed to do this podcast. A podcast that in some ways, is my own "second coming out" in sharing my own truth at this point in my life.My hope is that by my sharing this, others will also now be able to speak their truth and to "Pay It Forward" to many others who are desperate to hear their truth. Thanks for listening. Can Mormonism and historic Christianity truly be considered the same faith? In this episode, we examine an article by Eric Johnson of Mormonism Research Ministry (MRM) that presents seven challenging questions for Latter-day Saints. Topics include the Great Apostasy, the nature of God, premortal existence, exaltation and becoming gods, salvation by grace, temple ordinances, and baptism for the dead.Whether you agree or disagree with MRM's conclusions, these questions highlight some of the most significant theological differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and traditional Evangelical Christianity.Article discussed in this video:[https://mrm.org/7-questions](https://mrm.org/7-questions)Topics covered:• The Great Apostasy and Restoration• Does God the Father have a physical body?• Are all people literally spirit children of God?• Can humans become gods?• Grace vs. works in salvation• Temple ordinances and exaltation• Baptism for the deadWhat do you think—are these differences fundamental, or can Mormonism still be considered a Christian faith tradition? Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: kolob@mormonnewsroundup.org Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. A host admits taking communion at home daily, then asks what the Eucharist really is. The reactions are priceless, but the pastoral wisdom is the point.A priest goes on a massive Protestant podcast and a slice of Orthodox internet melts down. We don't. We ask the harder question: if we won't talk to people outside the Orthodox Church, how will anyone ever hear what Orthodoxy actually teaches, believes, and lives? Father Josiah Trenham's appearance on Girls Gone Bible becomes a real-time case study in evangelism, online criticism, and what it looks like to show up publicly without compromising the faith.“The Eucharist is just a symbol” sounds harmless until John 6 lands with full force. What happens when a huge audience hears the Orthodox view of Communion for the first time?Jeremy Jeremiah, Mario Andrew, and Michael of Cloud of Witnesses talk through the backlash to Father Josiah Trenham (Patristic Nectar) appearing on Girls Gone Bible and argue that Orthodox evangelism requires real conversations outside Orthodox-only spaces. We also dig into why the Eucharist is not merely symbolic, how John 6 reframes everything, and why the Divine Liturgy is where many people first feel the presence of God and can't look back.• why some Orthodox listeners object to public conversations with Protestants• the case for assuming good intent instead of hunting for scandal• how common ground can open doors without conceding doctrine• a host's “Eucharist journey” and the confusion around at-home communion• Father Josiah's John 6 teaching on the body and blood of Christ• why the symbolic-only view is rejected and what that implies pastorally• the Divine Liturgy as an encounter that convinces seekers• Paul on preparation for Communion and the fear of receiving casually• why the Protestant Reformation is not one thing and why that matters• born again language alongside baptism as water and the SpiritFrom there we follow the thread that grabbed the hosts and their audience: the Eucharist. You'll hear why “Communion is just symbolic” isn't a harmless difference in emphasis, how John 6 frames Jesus' words about eating his flesh and drinking his blood, and why the Orthodox Church insists on the real presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. We also react to the surprising honesty of a host describing daily at-home communion, curiosity about transubstantiation, and a search for healing, then break down the pastoral wisdom of responding with one clarifying question: “What do you mean by that?”We widen the lens to the Divine Liturgy and why so many visitors say they feel the presence of God and can't leave, plus Paul's warnings about approaching Communion without preparation. Finally, we touch the complexity of the Protestant Reformation, the wide range of Protestant sacramental beliefs, and why “born again” language is incomplete without being born of water and the Spirit through baptism. If you care about Orthodox Christianity, Eucharist theology, and real conversations across denominations, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more seekers can find the show.An Orthodox priest goes on a major Protestant show and people panic. Part of the mission statement of Biola University is to engage culture, and we take this seriously. So when Brigham Young University (BYU) reached out to see if Biola students would be open to beginning an interfaith dialogue, we jumped at the opportunity. Tim, on behalf of Biola, and professor Andrew Reed (Ph.D.), on behalf of BYU, are helping to lead this initiative, which includes co-teaching a class on civility, communication skills, and interfaith dialogue. On today's episode, Tim and Andrew invite three students - one from Biola and two from BYU - to discuss their experience dialoguing with one another on points of agreement and disagreement between Evangelical Christianity and Mormonism.Show notes and a full transcript are available.
In this episode of Honoring The Journey, Leslie talks with Megan Verno — a therapist, writer, and founder of Novo Nexus — about their parallel journeys out of high-control religions (Megan from Mormonism/LDS, Leslie from Evangelical Christianity). They explore the striking similarities between their experiences, including the loss of identity, community, and self-trust that comes with religious deconstruction, as well as specific LDS practices like the temple ceremony and excommunication culture. The conversation touches on patriarchy, LGBTQ+ issues as a catalyst for doubt, the concept of religious trauma, learning to trust one's own authority, and finding spiritual freedom beyond organized religion. Megan shares details about Novo Nexus, her support group and coaching program for those rebuilding their identities post-religion, and both women offer encouragement to listeners who may be in the midst of their own deconstruction journey. **I had some audio issues I tried working around in production with Megan's sound. Is truth objective—or just personal preference? In this episode of Redeeming Truth, our pastors address the growing rejection of biblical truth within modern evangelicalism. Using Scripture and data from The State of Theology survey, they explain what truth is, why it matters, and how abandoning God's Word leads to doctrinal drift, cultural confusion, and dying churches. This conversation calls believers back to Jesus Christ—the Truth—and reminds the church of its God-given responsibility to know, uphold, and proclaim the truth with courage, love, and conviction. Augie Constatino - Gator Rogowski. June 9From the archives Augie Constatino joins Ed Opperman to talk about Gator Rogowski. Mark Anthony "Gator" Rogowski is an American former professional skateboarder who was convicted of murder. He was mainly prominent in the 1980s and early 1990s. Rogowski's career ended when he pled guilty for assaulting, raping, and murdering Jessica Bergsten in 1991. His life was chronicled in a critically acclaimed 2003 documentary titled Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator by American filmmaker Helen SticklerAugie Costantino was thespiritual advisor and mentor to professional skateboarder Mark "Gator" Rogowski during Rogowski's transition into born-again Christianity in the late 1980s. Spiritual Guidance: Costantino, an ex-surfer turned "skateboard minister," befriended Rogowski after the skater suffered a severe injury in Germany. He influenced Rogowski to adopt a strict form of Evangelical Christianity, which led the skater to preach to peers and use religious imagery on his skateboards. The Murder Confession: Following the 1991 rape and murder of Jessica Bergsten, Rogowski eventually confessed the crime to Costantino.Surrender: It was Costantino who ultimately convinced Rogowski to turn himself in to the police to face the consequences of his actions. Rogowski is currently serving a sentence of 31 years to life; while he has been granted parole by the board multiple times (most recently in 2022), California Governors have consistently overturned the decision, maintaining that he remains a danger to societyBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Why don't Jews still offer animal sacrifices if the Old Testament law still applies? In this episode of Ask Dr. E, Dr. Michael Easley answers a thoughtful listener question by walking through Jewish history, Scripture, and the book of Hebrews.Dr. Easley explains the differences within modern Judaism, why the sacrificial system requires very specific biblical conditions, and how the destruction of the temple in AD 70 made sacrifices impossible under the law. He also explores the significance of the red heifer, the role of the priesthood, and why the author of Hebrews points to Jesus as the once-for-all sacrifice who fulfilled the entire system. This episode is a helpful guide for anyone trying to understand Judaism, the Old Testament sacrificial system, and why Christians believe Jesus is fully sufficient—no temple required.Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Sacrificial System00:48 Understanding Jewish Sects and Their Practices02:24 The Historical Context of Sacrifices05:24 Modern Implications: The Red Heifer and the Temple Institute08:03 Theological Reflections on Sacrifices and ChristKey Topics Covered-Why Jews no longer offer animal sacrifices-The destruction of the temple in AD 70-Orthodox vs. Conservative vs. Reformed Judaism-The red heifer and ritual purification-Hebrews 9 and Jesus as the final sacrifice-Do Christians need a future temple? This week on the show I'm joined by my friend Nate Cline to talk about his amazing journey from Evangelical Christianity into the Catholic Church. Nate's story is one of a passionate Evangelical Christian, honestly and wholeheartedly seeking after Christ through a variety of churches, church plants, church splits, and serious soul searching to find Christ, ultimately, in the last place he ever thought he could: the Catholic Church. After all, the Catholic converts we know, Nate points out, became that way only after passionately and in full abandonment, seeking out Christ and where He could be found. For more from Nate please subscribe to his YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/@thenateclineshowSend your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. 2015 Best Book Award from the Communal Studies AssociationThe captivating story of the people of Heaven's Gate, a religious group focused on transcending humanity and the Earth, and seeking salvation in the literal heavens on board a UFOIn March 1997, thirty-nine people in Rancho Santa Fe, California, ritually terminated their lives. To outsiders, it was a mass suicide. To insiders, it was a graduation. This act was the culmination of over two decades of spiritual and social development for the members of Heaven's Gate.In this fascinating overview, Benjamin Zeller not only explores the question of why the members of Heaven's Gate committed ritual suicides, but interrogates the origin and evolution of the religion, its appeal, and its practices. By tracking the development of the history, social structure, and worldview of Heaven's Gate, Zeller draws out the ways in which the movement was both a reflection and a microcosm of larger American culture. The group emerged out of engagement with Evangelical Christianity, the New Age movement, science fiction and UFOs, and conspiracy theories, and it evolved in response to the religious quests of baby boomers, new religions of the counterculture, and the narcissistic pessimism of the 1990s. Thus, Heaven's Gate not only reflects the context of its environment, but also reveals how those forces interacted in the form of a single religious body. In the only book-length study of Heaven's Gate, Zeller traces the roots of the movement, examines its beliefs and practices, and tells the captivating story of its people.https://amzn.to/3LOfAj5Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Christine Fekete is a fascinating study in going with the flow and moving forward. As the map of her life will detail, there is a 0% chance she could've predicted that she would be one of the fastest growing content creators on social media today! I have seen her grow from a few thousand followers to hundreds of thousands almost overnight, taking down a lot of right-wing talking points in that classic "We see what you're doing" style. But, honestly, do you think I would have someone on the show if their big thing was "has a lot of followers?" Heck no. Turns out, Christine's roadmap to end up where she is right now is a fascinating tapestry of ups and downs, a story of perseverence if you will. We talk all about that, including her "Think Happy Stuff" company, relationship with Evangelical Christianity, and so much more. So enjoy this episode, go follow @what.the.fekete on social media, and head on over to Patreon.com/jeffmay to enjoy the exclusive bonus content we recorded JUST FOR PATRONS!

Plus, join Ryan live and in-person for "On Fire For God" Friday at the Denver Press Club. Also, tempting tastes in the Pikes Peak region with "Side Dish." And we hop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe.
Immediately after recording the first episode of 2026, I went into the editing, because honestly, it's one of my favorite year starter episodes to date. This episode was born out of the fact that my guest, Snarky Faith's Stuart Delony, has a book coming out, and it's subject is a satirical look at the theological idea of the Rapture that has taken ahold in some sects of Evangelical Christianity. It only made sense for us to discuss three cinematic depictions of the Rapture. Join us as we talk about faith, religious escapism, and 1972's "A Thief in the Night", 2000's "Left Behind", and 2013's "Revelation Road: The Beginning of the End". We do have some audio issues at times but it's worth listening for the discussion we have. I hope you enjoy!Check out Stuart's book, The Tribulation Survival Guide: How to Stay Alive When Everything Else is Dead, when it comes out on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. You can order it here.
Elyse Bouvier is a filmmaker, photographer, and writer who recently wrote and directed the short documentary, Unfolding Faith, for the National Film Board of Canada. In this nuanced and timely short film, Elyse explores how her decision to give up her faith redefined both her identity and her relationships with her parents. We spoke to Elyse about her deconversion from Evangelical Christianity and what it was like to have raw yet empathetic conversations about faith while making her documentary with her devout mother and her father, a former pastor turned atheist. We also discussed shows like Unorthodox and films about transformation, like Barbie and Wild, and how Elyse would love to see TV and film tackle the nuanced, grey areas of the deconversion process and what it is like to live in mixed-faith families. There are many reasons why parents or guardians choose to homeschool their children for some portion or all of their educational years. This can range from a child having a disability or neurodiversity, concerns about the quality of education, to other topics like moral or religious conflict with traditional schools. Ryan Stollar shared the story of his experiences as a homeschooled child of an Evangelical family upbringing. He also talks about some of the trauma that he has experienced or witnessed from homeschooling ideologies, including sexual and/or physical abuse. Ryan's childhood included physical punishments from his parents, consistent with church doctrine. “There were teachers in evangelicalism who promoted how to raise and train children. And they always include corporal punishment,” he said. Ryan included that these punishments drove a wedge between him and his parents. He also noted that as he grew older and began speaking with other homeschooled children, he began to realize how bad some others had it concerning inadequate education, misogyny towards women's roles, and other forms of abuse. This was when he decided to act in the name of future homeschool children to prevent their abuse. Ryan is the author of the book The Kingdom of Children: A Liberation Theology. He co-founded the website Homeschoolers Anonymous, where many people who have been homeschooled share their stories of experiences and trauma. If you care about children, and worry about what is happening in America, this is an interview you will want to listen to and share. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this episode of 'Straight White American, Jesus,' Brad Oishi discusses the Trump administration's paradoxical treatment of Christianity. Highlighting the arrest of Christian clergy during a protest at the Broadview immigration facility, Oishi critiques the administration's selective support for certain Christian ideologies while persecuting others. He explores the historical prominence of Evangelical Christianity in American politics and critiques the intersection of this with Trump's deportation policies. Oishi underscores the dangers of Christian nationalism, emphasizing how it prioritizes a narrow interpretation of Christianity, leading to broader socio-political ramifications. The episode also touches on the broader implications of these actions, including upcoming ICE raids on Spanish-speaking churches and the administration's fragility amidst ongoing controversies. This is the first of a two-part deep dive into how U.S. foreign policy stared down the political threat of Liberation Theology by promoting Evangelical Christianity in Latin America. The CIA and USAID, in league with Vatican conservatives like Cardinal Ratzinger, spent money and social capital on the suppression of this vital new movement which insisted that poverty is political and that faith without structural change is hollow. By contrast, the Evangelical emphasis on individual sin, salvation, and personal prosperity aligned with Cold War and neoliberal interests. Spiritualities engineered to serve empire don't just pacify the poor abroad—they come back to police democracy at home. The “Evangelical boomerang” shows up in shifting Latino religious demographics and voting patterns, while the “reverse boomerang” hints that Liberation Theology language—once condemned—now shapes Pope Leo's message in this time of rising fascism. If MAGA mystics, prosperity preachers, and tech-bro shamans offer a gospel of self-aggrandizement, Liberation Theology counters with a message of shared material reality: no one owns the food, we share it; the Sabbath serves people, not power; love of God is inseparable from love for the poor. Part 1 lays the intellectual and historical groundwork; Part 2 follows the covert money networks and then asks whether a newly emboldened Catholic social vision can stiffen global resistance to authoritarian capitalism. Here I comment on the reality of an entirely new religion Post WW2 that is often mistaken for common Evangelical Christianity. It is better called Judeo-Christianity. The Jews are the corporate body of the devil, with Satan as their head. Christians are forbidden from blessing the Jews. The devil has invented sins such as "racism," and "antisemitism" with which to accused Jesus Christ. All this must be burned. This is a long one. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend Adom Postma and his brother Jason, a former Anglican priest, to talk about the incredible conversion – a journey made by three brothers into Catholicism. Raised in the Reformed tradition, these brothers loved their faith deeply and regularly spared with one another, as iron sharpens iron, on all kinds of topics in Evangelical Christianity. But when one brother began to look into the Early Church Fathers in order to win a debate with a Jehovah's Witness, things begin to take an interesting turn. Listen and learn how slowly their conversation turned towards Catholicism. How Jason, a devout Anglican priest with a church and a ministry and a family to take care of, wrestled with the same questions he watched his brothers wrestle with – and come to startlingly similar conclusions. And how, ultimately, the only thing that made sense to do for all of the brothers was to become Catholic! This is a fantastic story that you won't want to miss. Finding Authentic Christian Worship: A Journey Through History, Tradition, and FaithThe search for authentic Christian worship often begins with a simple but profound question: “Is this how the apostles worshipped?”In this special Cloud of Witnesses (https://www.patreon.com/c/CloudofWitnesses) mini-episode, our guest hosts, Ben and Ashley Langlois—Ben known online as Orthodox Luigi—invite us into their personal journey of wrestling with that very question. As a husband-and-wife team, their perspectives bring a unique richness to the conversation: Ben shares from his theological study and exploration of history, while Ashley offers a heartfelt and distinctly feminine perspective on what it means to seek beauty, meaning, and belonging within the Body of Christ.Raised in contemporary Protestant settings, they began to sense subtle but growing tensions during worship: as guitars played, lights dimmed, and emotions ran high, they couldn't shake the feeling that something essential was missing. Were coffee shops, branded merchandise, and high-energy worship experiences truly what Christ intended for His Church? This questioning sparked a spiritual journey that led them through seven different churches, eventually settling for online services when no physical community seemed to reflect the fullness they longed for. Along the way, family connections played an important role. Brothers who were exploring Catholic and Orthodox traditions introduced Ben and Ashley to writings from the Church Fathers and early Christian practices that challenged many modern assumptions. Some discoveries were unexpected—like learning that Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli, leaders of the Protestant Reformation, all practiced infant baptism, a tradition many evangelical churches have set aside. For Ashley, these realizations opened new questions about how faith traditions shape the spiritual life of families and the formative role of women in the Church.Their journey eventually brought them to a Presbyterian congregation that offered what they call “pseudo-tradition”—wooden pews, touches of liturgy, and references to early writers. Yet, as Ashley shares, there was still a lingering sense of longing: the beauty was there, but the roots felt incomplete. Exploring historically grounded Protestant traditions like Anglicanism and Lutheranism only deepened this tension, as they often discovered a paradox—churches with the richest liturgical practices frequently embraced the most progressive theology, raising concerns about spiritual and doctrinal stability.Through prayer, study, and reflection, Ben and Ashley's path eventually led them to Eastern Orthodoxy, where they encountered a faith deeply rooted in apostolic succession, ancient liturgies, and a vision of salvation as a lifelong journey of transformation in Christ. Ashley speaks to how Orthodoxy's reverence, beauty, and communal worship resonated with her desire for a faith that engages not just the mind, but the heart and the senses—inviting the whole person into relationship with God.This is more than a story about leaving one church for another—it's about the deeper longing many Christians feel today: to encounter something enduring, rooted, and unchanging in a rapidly shifting world.Entire uncut, unedited conversation between Ben and Ashley available now on our Patreon!Visit Cloud of Witnesses Radio: https://cloudofwitnessesradio.com/ Questions about Orthodoxy? In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend Carla Lynch to unpack her outrageous journey from Charismatic, Evangelical Christianity into full communion with the Catholic Church. Carla's journey is one of a kind, beginning when her Evangelical Youth Group visited a well-known Catholic Church – the beauty, the stillness, and the devout worship of the Catholics she saw there coming up-ended her understanding of Catholicism and planted a seed that would slowly germinate and grow until she couldn't avoid it's presence any longer. From there, her story only gets even more wild. Carla's journey is amazing and I truly hope you enjoy it.Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. When Evangelical Zeal Meets Ancient Christianity: A Conversation Between FriendsWhat happens when two long-time friends—one a passionate evangelical content creator, the other a devout Eastern Orthodox Christian—sit down inside a church filled with ancient icons to talk about faith, history, and what it means to follow Jesus? In this compelling and heartfelt dialogue, David Latting and Ben Langlois (Orthodox Luigi) offer something rare: a conversation marked by both conviction and deep mutual respect.Though they come from very different traditions, David and Ben's friendship sets the tone for an honest, disarming exchange. David opens up about his spiritual journey—how intense theological debates with Muslims drove him to investigate church history, and how walking through ancient cathedrals awakened a hunger for something deeper than modern formulas. In a moment of raw vulnerability, he describes being moved to tears during an Orthodox liturgy, even while remaining rooted in his Protestant community. “I want to break that wall,” he says, referring to the misconceptions that often prevent evangelicals from seriously engaging with Orthodoxy.Ben responds not with defensiveness, but with clarity and grace. He explains Orthodox Christianity's understanding of apostolic succession, the theological meaning of icons as “windows into heaven,” and how salvation is seen not as a one-time event, but a lifelong process of becoming more like Christ. His insights are never presented as a challenge to Protestant faith, but as an invitation to consider the historical richness of the early Church.Together, David and Ben reflect on the hunger many Christians feel today for worship that is Christ-centered, reverent, and historically rooted. They share a mutual concern about the rise of personality-driven church culture and discuss how liturgical structure and ancient rhythms offer spiritual depth that many young believers are longing for. What makes this conversation so meaningful isn't just the exchange of ideas—it's the way both men keep Jesus at the center. They demonstrate how friendship, humility, and shared love for the gospel can bridge even deep theological divides.Whether you're Protestant, Orthodox, or simply curious about the richness of Christian tradition, this conversation invites you to reflect more deeply on your own faith journey. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Jannah Russell to share her remarkable Catholic conversion story. Raised in the Jehovah's Witness tradition, Jannah explains how her and her husband became disillusioned with the group, eventually leaving, and rediscovering faith on their own. Their journey, ever seeking the truth of Christ and His Church, led them into Evangelical Christianity where experiences around Communion, baptism, and the interpretation of Scripture set off some of the same alarm bells they'd heard as Jehovah's Witnesses – and that compelled them to begin their journey in the first place! Those alarm bells drove them deeper into Scripture, into Church history and the Church Fathers, and from there, the slow realization that maybe, despite their deepest reservations, they needed to explore Catholicism. This is a truly remarkable story and not only because Jannah managed to tell it while single-handedly taking care of 4 kids (because her husband had to work late!) but because it's a kind of microcosm of some of the same issues that comes up in Protestant Christianity writ large – playing out for two Christ-seeking believers leaving the grasp of a pretty intense Christian sect. The presence of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life is evident through wisdom, revelation, and empowerment. Yet, many followers of Jesus struggle to fully embrace the Spirit and remain open to its power and transformative work—both of which are essential for a vibrant, faith-filled life. References: "It is the same with the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Evangelical Christianity believes it, but nobody experiences it. It (the Holy Spirit) lies under the snow, forgotten. I am praying that God may be able to melt away the ice from this blessed truth, and let it spring up alive again, that the Church and the people who hear may get some good out of it and not merely say 'I believe,' while it is buried under the snow of inactivity and nonattention." - A.W. Tozer
The presence of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life is evident through wisdom, revelation, and empowerment. Yet, many followers of Jesus struggle to fully embrace the Spirit and remain open to its power and transformative work—both of which are essential for a vibrant, faith-filled life. References: "How many blessed truths have gotten snowed under. People believe them, but they are just not being taught, that is all. I think of our experience this morning. Here was a man and his wife, a very fine intelligent couple from another city. They named the church to which they belonged, and I instantly said, 'That is a fine church!' 'Oh, yes,' they said, 'but they don’t teach what we came over here for.' They came over because they were ill and wanted to be scripturally anointed for healing. So I got together two missionaries, two preachers, and an elder, and we anointed them and prayed for them. If you were to go to that church where they attend and say to the preacher, 'Do you believe that the Lord answers prayer and heals the sick?' he would reply, 'Sure, I do!' He believes it, but he doesn’t teach it, and what you don’t believe strongly enough to teach doesn’t do you any good. It is the same with the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Evangelical Christianity believes it, but nobody experiences it. It lies under the snow, forgotten. I am praying that God may be able to melt away the ice from this blessed truth, and let it spring up again alive, that the Church and the people who hear may get some good out of it and not merely say 'I believe' while it is buried under the snow of inactivity and nonattention. 'Lord, don’t let me be guilty of keeping the truth of the Holy Spirit’s ministry ‘buried under the snow.’ Help me to both teach and live the active presence and controlling power of the Holy Spirit today. Amen.'" - A.W. Tozer, How to be Filled with the Spirit “Everywhere I go, I find that God’s people lack something. They are hungry for something. Their Christian experience is not all that they expected.” - Billy Graham TRANSCRIPT

Andrew Arndt is back on the podcast today. He's a pastor and author who's challenging how we typically understand the gospel. His new book, "A Strange and Gracious Light," explores what it means to see Jesus as a living presence that intersects with our real, complicated lives. We'll discuss how the gospel isn't just about personal salvation or afterlife insurance, but a transformative story that speaks directly into our current cultural moment - with all its complexity, pain, and potential. Andrew brings a fresh, albeit an ancient perspective on how Jesus encounters us in our everyday struggles, political tensions, and personal challenges. This conversation is about reimagining the good news of Jesus as something far more expansive and immediate than we've traditionally understood. We'll explore what it means to experience Christ's presence in a way that's both deeply personal and broadly transformative. So join us as we facilitate encounters with the living God. Andrew Arndt is the Lead Pastor of New Life East (one of seven congregations of New Life Church in Colorado Springs), where he also hosts the Essential Church podcast, a weekly conversation designed to strengthen the thinking of church and ministry leaders. Prior to joining New Life's team, he served as Lead Pastor of Bloom Church: a neo-monastic, charismatic, liturgical, justice-driven network of house churches in Denver. He received his MDiv from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, is working on his Doctor of Ministry at Western Theological Seminary, and has written for Missio Alliance, Patheos, The Other Journal, and Mere Orthodoxy. Stuart Delony is unabashedly snarky. In fact, you could call it his trademark. He's unapologetic. He's direct. He uses profanity. And, he is calling out the inconsistencies within Evangelical Christianity and the American church, distinctions between what Jesus called His church to do and what we actually do.He's also a former pastor from within Evangelical Christian culture. That's awkward. But, is he correct? And, if he is correct, is he going about it in the right way?Today's Kingdom Culture Conversation is going to be very interesting!Stuart Delony founded his blog and podcast--Snarky Faith--and it has grown to have a national reach. His tagline is "Radio for the Spiritually Disenfranchised" and he's been prominently featured within the documentary, "In God we Trump"--an expose on the American church and its relationship with President Donald Trump. With trademark snarky-ness as a key element of his communication tact, he can be seen as abrasive but the awkward part of it is, there are times where he may be right.Or, is he? Today, you'll hear from Stuart directly and get the chance to decide. To learn more about Stuart Delony and Snarky Faith, please visit SnarkyFaith.com.To read the specific blog post that we discuss within the episode, "Culture Wars Distract from Jesus' Call", please follow this link. Women were active participants in the Millerite Movement, a mid-nineteenth century American revival movement. They not only believed Christ was coming soon, they actively disseminated the good news. And if Christ was coming soon, they needed to work together to improve the lives of those around them. This episode explores the lives of little-known Millerite women who were actively involved in the Millerite, temperance, abolition, and suffrage movements and how these activities intersected. In the second episode of season 5, Andrea dives into how Sophie's Evangelical Christian beliefs colored her worldview. From claiming that adopting a child from Zambia was God's path for her life to allegedly performing an exorcism, Sophie's faith is an integral part of this case. We hear from Dr. Lauren Turek, an Associate Professor of History at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX and author of To Bring the Good News to All Nations: Evangelical Influence on Human Rights and U.S. Foreign Relations, gives us a context about Evangelical Christianity in the US and abroad and helps us understand Sophie's religious upbringing and worldview. Andrea is then joined by some of the Nobody Should Believe Me team: Senior Producer Myrriah Gossett and Lead Researcher/Producer Erin Ajayi to attempt to fill in the many blanks left by Sophie's memoir about her time in Zambia. The three of them lay out a timeline leading up to Sophie's adoptions of M and C, while at the same time examining the series of omissions and half-truths riddling Sophie's story. *** Links and Resources: Learn more about Dr. Lauren Turek: https://laurenturek.com/ Preorder Andrea and Mike's new book The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy Catch Andrea and Mike at their Seattle Book Launch Event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/andrea-dunlop-and-mike-weber-the-mother-next-door-tickets-1097661478029 Click here to view our sponsors. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Catholic convert, or revert from non-denominational Evangelical Christianity, Austin Habbish. Austin is the founder of Think Catholic, the host of the podcast Summa in a Year, and the heart and mind behind Sent Evangelization. In this episode Austin shares some of his experiences, as a Catholic, evangelizing door-to-door in his parish neighbourhoods. We talk about the obligation as baptized believers to evangelize, the importance of taking care of everyone (not just the Catholics) in our parish neighbourhoods, and how to evangelize in a world that's increasingly unfriendly, un-churched, and where religion is a foreign language. Austin's an awesome guy with a huge heart for evangelization. This is a great conversation. For more from Austin check out Sent Evangelization and Think Catholic and look up Summa in a Year wherever you find podcasts.Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. We're spreading our wings and stepping outside our comfort zone to talk to folks we think are funny, but that we don't know, and on today's episode with Zach Zimmerman, we are rewarded for our risk-taking! Cuz Zach is the bee's knees, the cat's pajamas, heck, he's even the tapir's cape! Now Zach's a stand-up who hosts a live show with our fav Jay Jurden, he's appeared on Corden and After Midnight, and his first book of essays Is It Hot in Here (Or Am I Suffering for All Eternity for the Sins I Committed on Earth)? was published last year. And on today's ep we talk all about mother issues! Mother issues, conservative parents, and Andy tries to get Zach to explain the psychological inconsistencies in Evangelical Christianity... can he do it? PLUS, obvi, we answer YOUR advice questions! While we're having a wonderful time here in Barcelona, Spain, I came across some interesting statistics lately that have been happening here. And that is the rise of Spanish evangelicalism. Our guest this week recently traveled down to the border to confront the so-called “Army of God” as part of a larger project of providing alternative ideologies to Christian nationalism. Doug Pagitt is a pastor, author and the executive director of Vote Common Good, an organization aimed at influencing evangelical Christians. His group has been on a nationwide tour focused on directly engaging evangelicals in key swing states with the hope of swaying a critical percentage of them against former President Donald Trump. Pagitt believes a small portion of these voters are swayable and that if they are engaged, election outcomes can be flipped. He joins WITHpod to discuss the trajectory of evangelical politics, what he's learned on tour and what's at stake in this year's election.
